<p>This week, two separate security alerts have revealed major holes in devices from Moxa, an industrial automation networking company. In one case, attackers could potentially send commands to a device&#8217;s operating system by using them as a username in a login attempt. In another, the private key for a Web server used to manage network devices could be retrieved through an HTTP GET request.</p>
<p>The first vulnerability, in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.moxa.com/product/AWK-3131A.htm">Moxa&#8217;s AWK-3131A</a> 802.11n industrial wireless networking gear—which can act as an access point, bridge, or client device—was revealed by Cisco Talos on April 3. Because of the way user authentication for multiple features works—leveraging the &#8220;loginutils&#8221; tool of the Busybox operating system—the usernames from failed login attempts are processed in such a way that they could be leveraged to inject command-line instructions by using punctuation to separate the command from the rest of the command-line output.</p>
<p>&#8220;Exploitation of this vulnerability has been confirmed via Telnet, SSH, and the local console port,&#8221; Patrick DeSantis and Dave McDaniel of Cisco Talos wrote in their report. &#8220;It is suspected that the web application may also be vulnerable as it relies on loginutils and examination of the iw_<em>event</em><em>_</em>user binary reveals &#8216;fail&#8217; messages for &#8216;WEB,&#8217; &#8216;TELNET,&#8217; and &#8216;SSH.'&#8221;</p>

<p>        Germany’s Federal Network Agency has issued a warning to parents to destroy a talking doll because hackers can use an embedded bluetooth device to talk to and listen to children.</p>

<p>The talking doll named ‘Cayla’, contains a microphone, speaker and connects to the internet to answer toddlers questions. But the doll has a sinister side, equivalent to a <em>“concealed transmitting device,” </em><a target="_blank" href="http://www.sueddeutsche.de/digital/2.220/ueberwachung-im-kinderzimmer-netzagentur-ruft-eltern-auf-puppe-cayla-zu-zerstoeren-1.3383009">warned</a> the telecoms watchdog.</p>
<p>The doll’s smart technology allows it to respond to users questions by accessing the internet. The watchdog said, however, that this tech could be hijacked by specialists, compromising personal data.  </p>
<p>Germany has strict privacy laws to protect against surveillance. It is illegal to sell or possess a banned surveillance device. Violations are punishable by up to two years in jail.</p>
<p>The not-so-friendly doll has been the subject of complaints from consumer groups in both the US and Europe, arising from data protection and privacy concerns.</p>
<p>The bug, which would allow potential breaches to take place, was discovered more than two years ago, in 2015, but has yet to be fixed.  </p>
<p>Legal concerns about the creepy toy were first raised by University of Saarland student, Stefan Hessel, who <a target="_blank" href="https://netzpolitik.org/2017/schnueffelpuppe-my-friend-cayla-in-deutschland-verboten/">told</a> Netzpolitik.org that a hacker could potentially connect to the doll <em>“through several walls”</em> or from a distance of up to 10 meters.</p>
