Gypsy was initially poised as another prestige drama for Netflix — with a star-filled cast including Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, and some intriguingly dark material. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to its potential, according to early reviews. Now, it looks like Netflix is ready to pull the plug. The company has canceled Gypsy, even though it was discussing a second season with producers, according to Deadline. Sources at Netflix also confirmed to us separately that it won’t be returning.

While it’s a shame for fans of the show, it was likely a victim of a slightly more selective Netflix. The streaming service used to be known for greenlighting practically any crazy idea, but earlier this year it cancelled Girlboss and Sense8 (though the latter is getting a two-hour finale next year, thanks to fan outcry). The Get Down, which was spearheaded by director Baz Luhrmann, was also axed after significant delays and a budget that skyrocketed to $ 120 million. Those cancellations are a bit hard to stomach, though, since Netflix thinks the world actually wants a second season of The OA. But hey, at least we’re getting more GLOW.

By the time 2017 is over, close to 500 scripted television shows will be out there for the masses to consume. So it’s not too surprising that Netflix – a company which, early in its experimentation with original programming, often renewed its shows for multiple seasons – is starting to outwardly feel the strain of Peak TV.

Their latest casualty? The Naomi Watts series Gypsy, which has officially been canceled. But while Watts’ intimate therapist isn’t coming back to the streaming service after only one season, the gorgeous ladies of wrestling will be stepping back in the ring after their triumphant debut: Netflix has given the go-ahead for GLOW season 2.

Let’s look on the bright side first: GLOW is coming back, baby. The show’s official Twitter account brought the news with the caption “Here we #GLOW again…season 2 is coming.”

I’m finally getting around to catching up with this show, and I agree with a lot of the positive buzz that surrounded the show when it premiered earlier this summer. The ensemble cast (led by Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and a surprisingly solid Marc Maron) is excellent, the music is a lot of fun (Stan Bush’s upbeat anthem “Dare” is used in one episode, marking the first time I’ve heard it utilized since its appearance in 1985’s animated Transformers: The Movie), and the underdog sports team angle makes it easy to root for these characters. I still have a couple episodes left to watch in season 1, but I imagine season 2 will be a lot more wrestling-heavy since the first season is largely about the women starting from scratch with no experience, forming their in-ring characters, and getting ready for the show to premiere.

gypsy trailer

Meanwhile, Gypsy has bitten the bullet. Since Netflix doesn’t provide reasons for its cancellations and is notoriously stingy with its viewership numbers, it’s unclear whether they axed it because not enough people watched it or simply because it received apathetic-to-negative reviews. But regardless of their reasons, this decision aligns with CEO Reed Hastings‘ recent comments, in which he said, “We have to take more risk; you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.” Hastings proposed a more “aggressive” approach for his content team, encouraging them to take bigger swings in the hopes that a few of them connect in a major way (he cited the surprise success of 13 Reasons Why as a good example of this).

So it seems the era of Netflix practically guaranteeing at least two seasons of a show has come to an end. Gypsy joins The Get Down and Girlboss as recent high-profile series canceled after only one season. But hey, at least Watts is still a part of a major ensemble cast on Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival, so things could be worse.

Gypsy Cancelled After One Season https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-cancelled-after-one-season/ https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-cancelled-after-one-season/#respond Fri, 11 Aug 2017 16:48:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gypsy-cancelled-after-one-season/

Netflix and Naomi Watts are consciously uncoupling.

The streaming service has cancelled psychological thriller Gypsy after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports. All 10 episodes dropped on Friday, June 30.

In Gypsy, Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a Manhattan therapist who gives into her most intimate fantasies and develops, shall we say, unethical relationships with her patients. Spotlight‘s Billy Crudup co-stars as Jean’s husband Michael.

Gypsy follows a string of high-profile cancellations at Netflix, which have included Girlboss, The Get Down and Sense8. (The latter was ultimately revived for a two-hour wrap-up special, to be released in 2018.)

Are you saddened by Gypsy‘s cancellation? Given the streaming service’s recent glut of original series, were you aware it even exist?! Sound off below.

Gypsy season 2 release date: Will Naomi Watts return for another series on Netflix? https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-season-2-release-date-will-naomi-watts-return-for-another-series-on-netflix/ https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-season-2-release-date-will-naomi-watts-return-for-another-series-on-netflix/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 15:53:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gypsy-season-2-release-date-will-naomi-watts-return-for-another-series-on-netflix/

Will Gypsy return for season 2?

Gypsy has been slated by critics for its glacial pace and uneven writing.

As of July 10, it holds a 27 per cent approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, way below other recent Netflix releases Glow (96 per cent) and House of Cards season five (72 per cent).

Creator Lisa Rubin has admitted that there is “clearly a big disconnect between critics and audiences”.

She told Entertainment Weekly: “I’m so happy with the fan response.”

“We’re all excited about the possibility [of a second season]. It’s very much on the table. I’m sure they’ll announce it either way in a few weeks.”

Netflix has, as of late, become more ruthless with its original series.

In recent months it has cancelled The Get Down and Girlboss after their first seasons, and dropped the hugely popular Sense8 – which will now return for a two-hour finale after protests from fans.

What will happen in Gypsy season 2?

If the psychosexual drama does return for another season, Rubin says that it will “become more of a thriller”.

“Obviously, there’s a lot more escalation,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“In those ways, it will potentially answer critics.”

“Jean is a mystery, and a lot of those questions about her past will be answered in a second season. We’ll start to understand her foundation and her motivations.”

Rubin revealed that Tom and Allison would be a “big thing we explore”.

“Tom and Allison could pose a threat to Jean,” she said.

“It could be that they’re in it together; it could be that Allison’s taken against her will. It’s ambiguous but could be explored in season two.”

Naomi Watts, who plays Jean, has said that she “could definitely be open” to a second run of the show.

“I had a good time with her,” she told Collider.

“I’m not completely on board with a lot of the decisions she made, but it’s fun to shift from a place of judgement to forgiveness.”

Who is in the cast of Gypsy?

Naomi Watts plays Jean Holloway, a therapist so bored of her own life that she begins to meddle in the lives of her patients.

Billy Crudup plays her husband Michael, an over-worked lawyer who grows suspicious of his wife’s strange behaviour.

Karl Glusman stars as Sam, one of Jean’s patients who is struggling to move on from his manipulative ex-girlfriend Sidney (Sophie Cookson).

Lucy Boynton plays Allison, a recovering drug addict who is being treated by Jean. Brenda Vaccaro is Claire, another patient, who is obsessed about her adult daughter Rebecca (Brooke Bloom)’s life choices.

Melanie Liburd plays Alexis, Michael’s PA, who Jean distrusts. Poorna Jagannathan completes the main cast as Larin Inamdar, a close friend of Jean’s and her fellow therapist.

‘Gypsy’ Was Less Interesting Than the Yogurt I Ate While Watching It https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-was-less-interesting-than-the-yogurt-i-ate-while-watching-it/ https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-was-less-interesting-than-the-yogurt-i-ate-while-watching-it/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2017 19:40:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gypsy-was-less-interesting-than-the-yogurt-i-ate-while-watching-it/ I avoided the signs with this one. Naomi Watts gave a decade-in-performances-topping turn in Mulholland Drive, was quietly hilarious in While We’re Young, and brilliant in I Heart Huckabees and the new Twin Peaks, in which she’s had to play the very odd task of being so riled up and discontent as to not notice that her husband’s a vegetable from another realm. I wanted Netflix’s just-released Gypsy to showcase that (rather than, say, reflect the spate of other lesser films she’s starred in in the last decade, from 3 Generations to Adore to Diana) — so much so that I largely ignored the red flag of the trailer boasting “from the director of 50 Shades of Grey,” or the fact that it gave therapy expressions like “I believe your time is up” self-serious double meanings.

Turns out, this show that wants to explore a transgressive fantasy is, like 50 Shades before it, so staunchly vanilla that I actually started paying more attention to the writing on the back of the cup of Chobani I was eating while watching it (incidentally, the same flavor!). “How does the vanilla in this yogurt taste so real?” became a more interesting question than anything regarding the series. However, one question about Gypsy does keep recurring: why does this character study, with its puzzlingly trite conception of what makes for an interesting, transgressive character, exist?

Luckily this thing (which is shot like a Zales commercial) has actors disguising, as best as they can, the flatness of the language and artless sheen of the cinematography. But if at any point you stop to imagine how this series would sound on the page, you might simultaneously find yourself getting very upset at the phantom piles of better scripts out there that never made it into being.

Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a therapist who delves way too deep into the personal lives of her patients, and who’s in the midst of formulating an Americano-and-bourbon chugging bi-curious alter-ego named Diane. (Not Diane Selwin, unfortunately — if only!) She’s married to a successful lawyer (Billy Crudup), and they have a daughter who they lightly worry might be having questions about her gender identity. They live in a nice house in a Connecticut suburb, and sometimes Jean makes boeuf bourguignon, and then she and her husband stiffly reminisce at bizarre lengths on other instances in which she cooked, as if the show is taking extra time, in front of our eyes, to say, “see, see, we created a couple with a history!” Honestly, every detail of Jean’s life seems as though it was collaged together by an alien who came to earth and did really good research into common tropes in suburban drama: they’re all there, and all so wholly unspecific! The most egregious, perhaps, is the fact that Crudup’s character has an attractive secretary, about whom Jean has augmenting suspicions. And perhaps this stifling generic-ness could substantiate Jean’s character’s longing for escape — but for the fact that her escape routes aren’t particularly interesting, either.

As a story, and in its themes, the premise of the show is interesting. Therapy is a fascinating field, and the idea of an unethical therapist, who uses her knowledge to change her own life, is compelling. Seeing quotes where writer/showrunner Lisa Rubin describes it, even, could make it sound enticing. She told the Los Angeles Times:

A therapist has all this sort of intimate information about their patient and almost hears endlessly about these people and their lives — they could almost fall in love with these people through the stories. There are certain boundaries, emotional boundaries, gray areas that are really interesting because everyone has their own interpretation of what the line is or where the line is.

Could be exciting! Especially with Naomi Watts playing with those complexities! Catherine Breillat, or Michael Haneke, or other writer/directors who’re meticulous about the minutiae of psychological manipulation, could do great things with this! But, alas, this is the type of show that takes a statement like that and literally spells it out for you: in one therapy scene, Jean pretends to listen while pointedly writing out the word “boundaries,” which the camera decides to linger on as it blurs into the next scene.

Meanwhile, the insinuating score seems to want to tickle with hints of “mischief,” and “transgression,” and “danger,” and “fascinatingly tumultuous interiority,” but it’s kind of like being tickled with a cinderblock – because what’s going on doesn’t nearly live up to the tone they’re trying to create. In the first episodes, Jean/Diane happens to be enamored of one of her young patient’s (Karl Glusman, who you may recognize from his 3D ejaculate in Gaspar Noë’s Love) ex-girlfriend, and is stalking her at her coffee shop. There, Jean pretends to be a writer, and slowly starts to learn more and more about the craaazy, singular life of an… indie rock musician in Bushwick who baristas on the side. The second episode is called “Morgan Stop,” and sees her venturing to this stop off Brooklyn’s L train, treated here like a sort of Dante-esque descent into a wild punk-y industrial wasteland rather than the “wild punk-y industrial wasteland” that’s also the über-gentrified place where the Clintons went for pizza back in 2012.

Similarly, and frustratingly, the character’s sexual curiosity — her interest in another, younger woman — is also treated with the same sort of “isn’t this wild?! daring?!” suggestiveness. Bi-curious experimentation is rendered with a type of tonally silly and unfortunate exoticism. As with 50 Shades, Sam Taylor-Johnson (who executive produces, and directs some episodes) tries to tell us to be titillated and lightly scandalized with a script that fails to produce reasons to actually feel those things. We’re seriously cued to think “oooh, someone’s being naughty” when it’s revealed that Jean’s been dabbling in… drinking bourbon.

Dramas about affluent white people who’re itching to escape emotionally stagnating lives may now exist in too-high volume, but they certainly can be astonishingly good, smart, and self-aware character studies — see the leads on Big Little Lies, or any of the siblings on Transparent, or the men who have everything yet butt up against the void on MadMen, or the lovingly dysfunctional and exquisitely rendered characters on Six Feet Under, or even the characters on the perfectly mediocre Divorce, who’re at least three-dimensional. In fact, see, like, the majority of television for more nuanced, critical examples of the coupling of existential malaise and financial/social comfort. If you want to end up reading the entirety of the back of your subtle, intriguing yogurt, see Gypsy.

“Gypsy” is now streaming on Netflix.

‘Gypsy’ Trailer: Naomi Watts Stars in Netflix’s Salacious New Drama https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-stars-in-netflixs-salacious-new-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-stars-in-netflixs-salacious-new-drama/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 09:00:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-stars-in-netflixs-salacious-new-drama/ Gypsy Trailer 2

Oscar nominee Naomi Watts is one of approximately 200 characters to appear in David Lynch’s Showtime revival of Twin Peaks, but very soon she’ll step back into the spotlight and lead her own mysterious drama. Netflix has unveiled the first full trailer for Gypsy, in which Watts plays a therapist who crosses the line with her patients and gives in to her desires, throwing her family life into utter chaos.

Gypsy trailer

Our own Jacob Hall mentioned picking up on a whiff of Watts’ breakout performance in Mulholland Drive when he wrote about this show’s teaser trailer, and those parallels are even more explicit in this full-length look at the show: the woman who seemingly has it all together, the exploration of identity, and the line, “I guess I feel like I’ve been living my life as two people…I don’t know which one is real” hammer that comparison home. Gypsy may not have the surreal touches Lynch is known for, but the idea of turning over a picturesque life and examining the ugly truth underneath it is about as Lynchian as it gets.

It’s certainly not fair to hold first-time creator/showrunner Lisa Rubin to such a high standard, but it’ll be fascinating to see if she can carve out her own corner of the psychological thriller genre here and give us something we’ve never seen before. Watts appears to be diving headfirst into this material and looks to be delivering a manic performance that should ratchet up the tension as the thriller elements of this show reveal themselves. The always-reliable Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Alien: Covenant) co-stars as the husband frustrated with his wife’s behavior. Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sophie Cookson is also along for the ride, as is The Night Of and House of Cards alum Poorna Jagannathan, who seems to be playing someone who knows Watts’ secrets. And after being introduced to Lucy Boynton through her excellent work in last year’s musical Sing Street, I’m excited to see exactly how she contributes to this concoction as well.

The first season of Gypsy arrives on Netflix on June 30, 2017.

Gypsy is a ten-part psychological thriller that follows Jean Halloway (Naomi Watts), a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. As the borders of Jean’s professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds.

Gypsy Trailer: Naomi Watts Has Issues in Netflix's Sexy Psychological Thriller https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-has-issues-in-netflixs-sexy-psychological-thriller/ https://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-has-issues-in-netflixs-sexy-psychological-thriller/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2017 17:57:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gypsy-trailer-naomi-watts-has-issues-in-netflixs-sexy-psychological-thriller/

Is it hot in here? Or is it just this trailer for Naomi Watts’ new Netflix series that’s steaming up our laptop screen?

The official trailer for Gypsy — a ten-episode psychological thriller debuting Friday, June 30 — promises a very adult story, with Watts starring as therapist Jean Halloway, who crosses the line and gets a little too intimate with some of her patients. As she seductively toys with a male patient and later makes out with a female one (!) to the strains of Banks’ lusty “Waiting Game,” Jean muses: “There’s one force more powerful than free will: our desires.” (It’s no surprise that Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor Johnson helms the series.)

But Jean is married with kids, and her indiscretions start to catch up to her. A therapist colleague warns her, “You’ve burned so many boundaries,” and Jean admits, “I feel like I’ve been living my life as two people… I don’t know who’s in control anymore.” And when her husband Michael (Billy Crudup) starts to get suspicious of her, it sparks a rift that threatens to bring her whole life — both of her lives — crashing down.

Prepare for the TV-Oriented Naomi Watts-aissance with the Trailer for ‘Gypsy’ https://briefnews.eu/prepare-for-the-tv-oriented-naomi-watts-aissance-with-the-trailer-for-gypsy/ https://briefnews.eu/prepare-for-the-tv-oriented-naomi-watts-aissance-with-the-trailer-for-gypsy/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 18:55:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prepare-for-the-tv-oriented-naomi-watts-aissance-with-the-trailer-for-gypsy/ Much like fellow Aussie movie star Nicole Kidman (who this year appears in meaty roles in Big Little Lies and the upcoming second season of Top of the Lake), Naomi Watts is involved in not one but two 2017 prestige TV series – the upcoming Twin Peaks revival and Gypsy, the Netflix series whose first trailer has just been shared.

In Gypsy, a psychological thriller whose first season spans 10 episodes, Naomi Watts plays a therapist who pretty simply looks to do everything a therapist is never supposed to do. In the first trailer, Watts delivers a professional oath into the camera:

I will always provide a safe and trusting haven for my patients. I will remain objective in my relationships. I will not violate the physical boundaries of the patient. I will always do no harm.

In vague narrative shards, the trailer simultaneously shows her violating every one of those promises. The series, written by relative newcomer Lisa Rubin, also stars Billy Crudup, Love actor Karl Glusman Sophie Cookson, Lucy Boynton, and Karl Glusman. It’ll be available to stream on June 30.

Meanwhile, there’s still no specific news about the role Watts will be playing in the Twin Peaks revival. As with Laura Dern, another Lynchian veteran who’s also starring in the series — but whose role hasn’t been revealed — Watts has not yet appeared in any of the teaser trailers.

Watts proved immensely talented — adept in equal parts at rawly exhibiting pain and lacerating humor — in her breakout role in Mulholland Drive, then through I Heart Huckabees, 21 Grams, The Ring, Funny Games, The Impossible, and in her best recent work, While We’re Young. But in the last few years she’s also been in a spate of cinematic messes — from Shut In to Diana to the recently released 3 Generations. Perhaps TV will provide a more robust showcase for her talent. After all, Betty/Diane, the role(s) that kicked off her career in Mulholland Drive — and remains perhaps her most impressive performance to date — was originally meant for the small screen, too.
