A comedy-Western starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed? Sign me the hell up. The Sisters Brothers is an upcoming film that features that fine cast under the direction of Jacques Audiard, and it looks incredible. Watch The Sisters Brothers trailer below.
The Sisters Brothers was already at the top of my must-see-list based on its impressive cast, and this trailer has just sealed the deal. John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix star as Eli and Charlie Sisters, a pair of hitmen trying to track down a prospector, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Riz Ahmed is also on hand, as a chemist. That is one hell of a cast, folks. Reilly is one of those actors who is amazing in everything, ditto Ahmed. Phoenix is probably the best actor working right now, and I love that Jake Gyllenhaal is leaning into goofy character-actor work more and more – the voice he’s using here is almost as memorable as the bizarre voice he used for Okja.
Jacques Audiard, who directed A Prophet, Rust and Bone and Dheepan, helms the film, and it looks like he and cinematographer Benoît Debie have conjured up a rich visual style for this film – that shot of the Reilly and Phoenix walking away from a burning building is stunning. The Sisters Brothers is adapted from the acclaimed novel by Patrick deWitt.
During Phoenix’s now-legendary interview with Will Ferrell, he spoke briefly about working on the film – specifically, he reminisced about riding horses:
PHOENIX: There was another one, the stunt horse, that I couldn’t even look at because she was just so ferocious, her muscles constantly flexing.
FERRELL: Twitching, ready to go, full gallop.
PHOENIX: And I couldn’t do that. I mean, I didn’t like riding horses. I actually regretted having to ride. I’m a little clueless, because I don’t think that I really thought about it that much until I was there and realized, “Oh, it’s a Western and we’re on horses a lot.” I hadn’t really considered that. I felt bad about riding them. I had the feeling that they were like, “I don’t really want you on my back.”
FERRELL: But they tell you that the horses love it.
PHOENIX: Yeah, but the horses tell you something different. I’m really bumming out this interview, man. [laughs] I’m sorry.
The Sisters Brothers will be out later this year.
Based on Patrick Dewitt’s acclaimed novel of the same name, follows two brothers – Eli and Charlie Sisters – who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. Leonard Bernstein, famous for composing the music for West Side Story and for being the only lyric anyone can remember from R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”, is getting a biopic courtesy of Cary Fukunaga. Now, it looks like Fukunaga has found his leading man: Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jake Gyllenhaal is coming for that Oscar, so you better watch out. The actor has joined Cary Fukunaga’s new Leonard Bernstein biopic – a part that will likely offer Gyllenhaal the chance to rack up awards galore. Bernstein was an acclaimed composer, musician and conductor, responsible for the music of West Side Story, among other things. Bernstein was an outspoken figure, and often drew controversy for his political and personal opinions, including speaking out agains the Vietnam War. Fukunaga’s biopic will chronicle Bernstein’s rise to fame, and also his personal life – while the composer married Chilean-born American actress Felicia Cohn Montealegre, Bernstein was reportedly gay. Bernstein’s West Side Story collaborator Arthur Laurents once said that Bernstein was “a gay man who got married. He wasn’t conflicted about it at all. He was just gay.”
“Like many people, Leonard Bernstein found his way into my life and heart through West Side Story when I was a kid,” Gyllenhaal said (via The Playlist) “But as I got older and started to learn about the scope of his work, I began to understand the extent of his unparalleled contribution and the debt of gratitude modern American culture owes him. As a man, Bernstein was a fascinating figure—full of genius and contradiction—and it will be an incredible honor to tell his story with a talent and friend like Cary.”
Fukunaga added: “Bernstein’s artistic passions changed the way generations understood and appreciated music. It’s been wonderful collaborating with Michael and Jake on Bernstein’s story as we endeavor to capture both the iconic person and artist. Jake is the perfect partner to help bring this story to life and to play this legend.”
Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor who somehow always gets overlooked come award season (hey, Academy, where the hell was that Oscar nom for Nightcrawler?). Taking on this part seems to all but guarantee awards committees will pay attention – they love biopics, after all. Cary Fukunaga is an excellent filmmaker who doesn’t work nearly as much as he should, and I’m very interested to see what he does with this material.
Interestingly enough, this is one of two possible Leonard Bernstein biopics in the works. Steven Spielberg recently held a table read for a secret project that was reported to be “an untitled biopic on iconic composer Leonard Bernstein.” Spielberg is also making a remake of West Side Story, which, of course, features Bernstein’s music. Whether or not Spielberg will go ahead with his Leonard Bernstein biopic now remains to be seen.

At one point in the beguiling remake of the 2014 Israeli of the same name, a character in The Kindergarten Teacher evokes the name of Mozart as being a prime example of a child prodigy who was nurtured and otherwise taken care of by those who appreciated his unprecedented talent to the point where the young composer only had to focus on creating. When teacher Lisa Spinelli (Maggie Gyllenhaal, who appears in every frame of this film) discovers a possible poetry genius in her class of five year olds, she dares to consider what life would be like for young Jimmy Roy (newcomer Parker Sevak) if all he had to concern himself with was being creative.
For what seems like a fairly simple story, writer/director Sara Colangelo (following up her 2014 debut Little Accidents, which also debuted at Sundance) packs in a great deal for us to consider about Lisa’s mundane Staten Island existence as a 40-year-old wife and mother. She’s also a frustrated artist, taking a continuing-education course in poetry led by a charming but brutally critical teacher (Gael García Bernal), who makes it clear that Lisa functions best as an appreciator of art rather than a maker of it. Home life isn’t much better, as she’s surrounded by a family who she no longer feels connected to, including her husband (Michael Chernus), a son (Sam Jules) eager to join the military (she considers this a squandering of his talent and education), and a daughter (Daisy Tahan) who won’t remove her face from her phone.
Then one day after class, Lisa spots young Jimmy pacing around her otherwise empty classroom reciting a short poem he seems to have made up on the spot. It’s simple beauty and bold construction shock her, and almost on a whim, she presents the poem as her own to her class, the members of which are stunning by the maturity of the work. Lisa gently pushes the quiet, almost uncommunicative Jimmy, trying to tap into his inspiration and trigger new works. She enlists the boy’s nanny (Rosa Salazar) to document any new poems he comes up with at home. And little by little, we begin to see the seeds of obsession planted in Lisa’s head as she makes it her mission to nurture and encourage Jimmy’s gifts.
If The Kindergarten Teacher was nothing more than a tale of a teacher devoting herself to a single student’s success, it still might have been a solid work. But as Lisa begins to cross lines—little by little at first, and then more dramatically—the true nature of this story takes shape, and by the time we understand what is really happening, the movie is neck deep in its startling premise.
To watch Gyllenhaal transform several time during the course of the movie is a genuinely treat. When Lisa is passing off Jimmy’s poems as her own, she becomes a free-spirited artist, flirting with her teacher and even volunteering to read “her work” at a poetry club. But as her relationship with Jimmy evolves to the point where she takes over in the nanny job after school just to spend more time with him, she assumes the role of mentor and even protector—neither of which feels entirely appropriate in the moment. We also get to see Lisa just being a teacher to all of her young students, and Colangelo with cinematographer Pepe Avila del Pino capture what are clearly spontaneous moments between actor and young non-actors that sell Lisa’s gifts at getting this easily distracted kids to focus on her lessons. Later in the film, when she’s focusing most of her attention on Jimmy, we see these same skills (fine tuned over 20 years on the job) used to draw out thoughts and work from the boy. The elegant camera work, combined with Asher Goldschmidt’s pensive score, provide the perfect framework for this psychologically fragile piece.
The Kindergarten Teacher never explicitly asks the question, Would our reaction to what Lisa ultimately does in the film’s climax to ensure Jimmy get the attention she thinks he needs be different if it were a male teacher doing it? But it’s almost impossible not to contemplate the scenario were the genders reversed.
The film builds an exacting, creeping tension that lasts almost the duration of the running time. As a character, Lisa is inherently fascinating because it’s so easy to empathize with her plight of feeling trapped and frustrated in a life she likely never saw for herself. The only times in the movie where we see her light up are when poetry is involved, even when it’s not her own work. Perhaps unfairly so, she see Jimmy as the child she never had, one who actually followed her artistic lead and wanting desperately to please her. There’s a very good chance that certain audience members will leave the theater never liking Lisa because of some of the decisions she makes, but it seems clear that Colangelo finds it more importantly for us to understand Lisa than want to pal around with her.
While Gyllenhaal can be one of our most expressive actors, in some of her more recent work (including he astonishing take on sex workers in HBO’s “The Deuce”), she gets the most power by being a little more difficult to read. She seamlessly moves from aggressively manipulative to nurturing caregiver, often within the same scene And it’s that unpredictability that gives this movie its strength and grace, not to mention its most unnerving moments. Like the poems at its core, The Kindergarten Teacher has an almost undetectable depth that makes it its own special child.

Much speculation still surrounds the future of Affleck as the Dark Knight in the DC Expanded Universe.
Following the poor reviews and box office takings of Justice League, rumours have sprouted that Affleck has had enough of Batman.
While he’s supposed to be appearing in the upcoming Flashpoint movie with Ezra Miller, his future in the franchise is still undetermined.
To add to this, Matt Reeves is helming a Batman solo movie and sources say that he has his eye on Gyllenhaal for the Caped Crusader over Affleck.
Now an insider has spoken out to Revenge of the Fans, claiming it’s all but a done deal with Gyllenhaal, as soon as Affleck decides to hang up his cape.
The source said: “Gyllenhaal is probably Batman. Affleck is not out of it yet.
“That’s the thing, he still has a contract. But the studio is sour on him.
“If Ben rolls, Jake is in. Kind of a weird web. These guys both know they control each other’s destiny.”
Speaking with The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith, Reeves said of the script: “I am outlining. I have the story worked out, and I am outlining.”
A release date for the Batman solo movie is currently unknown.
Rumours have been swirling for months now that Affleck wants out of the DC Extended Universe.
It’s not officially known why, but could have something to do with his Batman films’ poor reception from critics and the box office.
War For The Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves will be helming a Batman solo movie, but it now looks like Gyllenhaal will replace Affleck as The Dark Knight.
In the DCEU leaks section of Reddit an allegedly “incredibly reliable source at Warner Bros” revealed what’s in the way of this becoming a reality.
The insider said: “Matt Reeves hopes to have the film out by 2020. Plot details remain under wraps but Matt has indeed met with other people about replacing Affleck.
“Initially it was just a tactic to get Affleck to sign on for more films, but then when that didn’t work, it got through to the studio that Affleck really didn’t want to stay.
“Gyllenhaal really wants the role, but the studio isn’t 100% sold on the idea yet.
“They might use Flashpoint to make him younger, but I don’t know how that will work.”
The alternate timeline in Flashpoint where Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Thomas Wayne becomes Batman instead of Bruce could be a way of explaining why Batman is suddenly around 10 years younger in age.
But for now these are rumours, so should be taken with a pinch of salt.
DC’s answer to the Avengers is released today, but is Affleck already hanging up his cape as the Dark Knight?
Just yesterday a rumour was mounting in that The Batman solo movie director Reeves was eyeing another actor to replace the star.
The news came from director and film critic John Campea on his YouTube show, who has now revealed that it’s Gyllenhaal who is in the pipeline.
Screen Rant reports the actor has already had a meeting with Reeves about potentially taking on the role.
Gyllenhaal may come as a surprise to some movie fans, but the actor did audition for Bruce Wayne when Christopher Nolan was casting for Batman Begins back in 2004.
Nevertheless he may now have a shot and certainly has that bulky, tall, dark and handsome look that usually comes when casting the part.
However is Affleck really done? Justice League producer Charles Roven claims that the actor still hopes to star in Reeves’ Batman solo movie.
Speaking with CBM, Roven said: “I’m not producing that movie, Matt Reeves is working on that, but I do work with Ben, so I know that he’s certainly planning on starring in that film.
“But I don’t know what the script is. I’m not producing that movie, so I’m probably the wrong guy to ask.”
Earlier this week the Batman star hinted that he will quit the franchise at some point. Could it have anything to with the constant stream of bad reviews?
He said: “You don’t do it forever so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”
The show looks at the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York and naturally features a wealth of saucy sex scenes.
In one such erotic scene, Candy dons a blonde wig and locks lips with another woman while revealing her bare breasts.
She is seen kneeling on the floor while staring up at two naked men before partaking in a lesbian scene with a fellow porn star.
The pair writhe around on a bed, eventually stripping each other naked for the adult film.
Maggie, 39, recently spoke out about her risqué new role to Time Out, explaining: “She gets involved in the beginnings of porn in someone’s basement.
“And even though there’s two naked guys and another naked woman and they’re filming sex, that’s incidental to her.”
“What’s exciting for her is the lighting, the idea of looking at sex through a lens. It’s the birth of an artist. Once that gets woken up in her, it can’t go back to sleep.”
James Franco, 39, directed some of Maggie’s scenes as well as starring in the new show.
He recently praised his co-star’s performance to Men’s Health, adding: “[Maggie] is fearless and she really led the charge with how she handled the sex scenes and how she handled herself, and really set the template for everyone else.”
The Deuce debuts on Sky Atlantic on 26 September at 9pm.

Jake Gyllenhaal has shown for over a decade that he has an impeccable ability to choose roles that can highlight his ever-expanding talents. But his latest role could get him his first Oscar nomination since 2006’s “Brokeback Mountain.”
In “Stronger” the actor plays Jeff Bauman, a free-spirit Bostonian who, like most in the city, grinds out his days so he can race to cheer on his beloved Red Sox, Bruins, or Patriots (depending on the time of year) at a nearby bar with friends and family. But after losing both his legs following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, Bauman suddenly becomes the unlikely face of the “Boston Strong” motto the nation uses to recover. Bringing notoriety to Bauman he never wanted.
Gyllenhaal plays Bauman in two parts. Before the bombing he’s a free spirit who can sweet talk anyone to get his way. And when it comes to his ex-girlfriend, Erin (Tatiana Maslany from “Orphan Black”), he lays on the charm big time, even promising her that he’ll be at the finish line to root her on at the marathon. Which leads to his horrific injury. Following the bombing, the charismatic smile is gone and Bauman is left lost navigating a world alongside family members that can’t get enough of him being a hero after not just surviving the blast but also helping the police ID one of the bombers.
For both versions of Bauman, Gyllenhaal goes all-in, delivering a tour-de-force performance that is the heart and soul of the movie. But the secret weapon of “Stronger” is Tatiana Maslany.
LionsgateAs Erin, Maslany plays a woman riddled with guilt as she feels responsible for what happened to Bauman.
Though the horrific event brought them back together, Erin struggles with becoming a part of his close-nit family, especially getting the approval of his often tipsy mother (played by Miranda Richardson). Erin is the person that keeps Bauman driven through his rehab and comforts him during his mental trauma.
A thankless job, it’s her refusal to enable Bauman during his darkest moments that finally makes him realize how vital she is to him and what his life means to others.
Maslany’s performance resembles Amy Adams’ in “The Fighter,” who also played an outsider trying to fit in with the dysfunctional Ward family as she falls for boxer “Irish” Micky Wars (Mark Wahlberg). The role garnered Adams a best supporting actress nomination. Maslany is worthy of the same attention.
At the helm of “Stronger” is David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express”), who once more shows he can direct any genre. But he wisely stays in the background, keeping the storytelling by the numbers. He pushes all the much-deserved attention on his stellar cast.
“Stronger” opens in theaters September 22.

From the creators of critically acclaimed The Wire, George Pelecanos and David Simon, The Deuce focuses on the seedy world of Manhattan’s porn and prostitution industry in the 1970s and 1980s.
With 42nd Street packed full of hookers, pornographers and the crooked cops who take a cut, Maggie plays Candy, a sex worker with high ambitions who aspires to make a name for herself producing X-rated films.
In saucy snaps from the first episode, Maggie can be seen stripping off with a client, opening her skimpy top provocatively to expose her bare breasts.
Flashing nearly everything on screen, she then proceeds to grope her own assets, much to the delight of her admirer.
Rocking a wild mane of platinum curls, the actress looks right at home in the retro series, which also stars James Franco as twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino who get sucked into the murky world of fronting for the mob.
When Candy realises that there are lucrative opportunities in the XXX movie industry with the legalisation of pornography, she quickly puts her business brain into gear, rebranding herself at first as a porn star and later a director.
The trailer for the upcoming series, demonstrates Candy’s independent spirit from the get go, seeing her brushing off Lawrence Gilliard Jr’s character’s offer to “run this town” together, insisting: “I’m gonna keep what I earn. I don’t need you or anybody else to hold me money for me.”
The clip also introduces the plethora of salacious businesses and dodgy dealings running rampant, all set against the backdrop the grit of the city and a stellar soundtrack of disco classics.
The esteemed producers George and David previously opened up about the concept behind the HBO original, with Simon explaining: “Everyone realised [at the time] that the money about to be made was going to be real.
“So what happened to those people who were the pioneers?” he added to the TCA press corps last month. “I was much less interested in whether porn was good or bad, just like on The Wire I wasn’t concerned whether drugs were bad or good.”
The Deuce premieres September 10 on HBO.
The trailer reveals…gambling! Porn! Mafia…stuff! Funny hair! Sounds like an HBO show. But the fact that this is a David Simon (and George Pelecanos) series suggests (as does the trailer, in its meticulous texturing and world-building) that this will be a singular, granular, and specific look at those buzzy themes. After all, James Franco gets to talk to himself beneath dueling fraternal porn-staches, and I don’t believe that exists anywhere else. The best description you’ll find of the series thus far comes, rather unsurprisingly, from Simon himself. He said in an interview with Variety:
[The Deuce is] roughly based on the story of the actual people who were there, some of the people that were the pioneers when pornography came out of the brown paper bag and became an open industry. Suddenly, a lucrative and provocative industry came out of nowhere soon to become a billion-dollar industry and a culture [impacting] right down to commercials to sell beer that became more and more overt right down to the sex education of a twelve-year-old with a laptop. We all live in a different world. There’s a cultural revolution here. But there is also a market story. It is a story about market capitalism and the rise of a new industry and what the world is like now when something is not supposed to be sold openly suddenly becomes legitimate and legitimized.
Both Maggie Gyllenhal and Franco played roles in the production beyond acting — Franco executive produced and directed an episode, while Maggie Gyllenhaal served as one of the series’ producers. She told Indiewire, “I didn’t know if I could play a prostitute without some kind of guarantee that they wanted to use not just my body, but also my mind. I wanted to be a part of the storytelling and the conversation about what happens to this woman. That was a big ask for an HBO show that was developed without me — and they gave it to me.”
