If you want to lose weight just be boring and stick to the same old foods, heart doctors say. The advice contradicts diet gurus who say it is better to eat a variety of different things.

Bore yourself thin, doctors say, in a blow to diet gurus https://briefnews.eu/bore-yourself-thin-doctors-say-in-a-blow-to-diet-gurus/ https://briefnews.eu/bore-yourself-thin-doctors-say-in-a-blow-to-diet-gurus/#respond Sat, 11 Aug 2018 07:55:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bore-yourself-thin-doctors-say-in-a-blow-to-diet-gurus/

But cardiac specialists say that could lead to poor eating patterns, an increase in junk food consumption and consequent weight gain and poor health.

Their study found many health experts and even public bodies recommend a wide variety of foods as a way to get all the necessary nutrients into your diet.

The idea is meant to encourage those who do not eat healthily to pack in more fruit, vegetables and fibre.

But in practice, those who ate the widest variety of foods are just as likely to tuck into more unhealthy dishes.

Lead researcher Marcia de Oliveira Otto said: “Eating a more diverse diet might be associated with eating a greater variety of both healthy and unhealthy foods.

“Combined, such an eating pattern may lead to increased food consumption and obesity.

“There is no evidence that greater overall dietary diversity promotes healthy weight or optimal eating.”

The American Heart Association conducted an overview of a number of studies into eating habits from the past 18 years.

Its report in AHA journal Circulation says there is some evidence a wider variety of food in a meal may delay the feeling of fullness, so diners eat more.

It advises eating more fruit, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, poultry and fish and cutting down on red meat, sweets and sugary drinks.

And, though it may be boring, sticking to the same kinds of foods is probably best.

Dr Otto said: “Selecting a range of healthy foods, which fits one’s budget or taste, and sticking with them, is potentially better at helping maintain a healthy weight than choosing a greater range of foods that may include less healthy items such as doughnuts, fries and cheeseburgers, even in moderation.”

The book includes everything from the owner’s manual canon, like how to lock the doors and when to rotate the tires (every 6,250 miles). There are Tesla-specific tips such as how to get in the car when you don’t have your authenticated smartphone with you, how to avoid idle fees at Superchargers, and how to name your car in the Tesla app. Speaking of names, Tesla refers to its products as if the model is a proper name: it’s not “Shift the Model 3 to Park,” simply “Shift Model 3 to Park.”

The manual also contains a few unexpected instructions due to to the Model 3’s touchscreen-dominant interface and dearth of manual controls. The cabin gets two scroll wheels on the steering wheel, and two stalks on the steering column. Want to adjust the steering wheel position? Click to a menu on the touchscreen. And because the menu resides in the touchscreen, you can’t adjust the wheel while driving. Want to turn on the wipers? Use the touchscreen. Adjust the exterior mirrors? Use the touchscreen. Enabling Autosteer? In the Controls menu, four touches to turn it on. Need to turn on the headlights or adjust the climate fan controls outside of the Auto settings? You know where to go.

Additionally, the owner’s manual previews a couple of features not yet activated. A camera facing into the cabin isn’t active, but “might be used in potential future features which could be added to Model 3 with software releases.” Tesla hasn’t divulged the reason for the cockpit cam yet, the top theories so far are that it could be used to monitor driver fatigue, or record all passenger activities when Tesla enables fully autonomous driving and car-sharing. The forward cameras used for the Speed Assist function “cannot detect speed limit signs at this time,” but that’s expected to come in a future update. Elon Musk said the Model 3 could one day be fitted with an optional tow hook, but the manual instructs owners not to tow at all, just before cautioning that towing with the Model 3 “before Tesla-approved towing components and accessories are available may void the warranty.” You can peruse the manual here for all the details.

Financial gurus tell everyone to have an emergency fund — but there’s a better way https://briefnews.eu/financial-gurus-tell-everyone-to-have-an-emergency-fund-but-theres-a-better-way/ https://briefnews.eu/financial-gurus-tell-everyone-to-have-an-emergency-fund-but-theres-a-better-way/#respond Sat, 04 Nov 2017 16:34:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/financial-gurus-tell-everyone-to-have-an-emergency-fund-but-theres-a-better-way/ ambulanceScott Olson / Getty Images

  • Jesse Mecham is the author of “You Need a Budget” and the founder of a personal-finance platform by the same name.
  • He recommends dedicating funds to specific types of financial crises, instead of having one generic emergency fund.
  • That way, you’ll be less inclined to borrow money from your savings, since you know it has an important purpose.

When it comes to saving money, Jesse Mecham would rather be realistic about human behavior than logical.

Mecham is the founder of personal-finance platform You Need a Budget and the author of a forthcoming book by the same name. He says the concept of an “emergency fund” isn’t as helpful as other financial gurus would have you believe.

Instead of stashing away a sum of money for anything that feels like an emergency, Mecham recommends saving money targeted to specific expenses. For example: funds to rely on if you lose your job.

Mecham writes that these targeted funds are “much less likely to get raided, since we’re holding them with a purpose. We can easily rationalize plucking money from a generic emergency fund when we’re not sure exactly what it’s being held for. But when you know that money is for medical bills, you’re much less likely to siphon from it to pay for a birthday present.”

Even if it’s the same amount of money, you’ll be less inclined to dip into it. It’s the math approach versus the realistic-about-human-behavior approach.

If you combine this strategy with another one of Mecham’s strategies — budgeting for “unplanned” expenses — you won’t even need that many targeted sums. For example, if you create a monthly spending category for car trouble, it won’t be a financial crisis when you inevitably get a flat tire.

Once you’ve dedicated funds to specific types of emergencies, you can sock them away in the right place. David Bach, author of the bestselling book “The Automatic Millionaire,” for example, recommends using a money market account.

In the event that you do borrow money from your targeted funds, you’ll be more likely to return it. As Mecham writes, “You know how much you need to put back, and why. The stakes are clear.”

The Dark Side of India's Spiritual Gurus Comes to Light https://briefnews.eu/the-dark-side-of-indias-spiritual-gurus-comes-to-light/ https://briefnews.eu/the-dark-side-of-indias-spiritual-gurus-comes-to-light/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2017 04:26:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-dark-side-of-indias-spiritual-gurus-comes-to-light/ In many parts of northern India on a Friday in late August, trains were canceled, schools and government offices were closed, internet and mobile services were suspended and the army was put on standby as the nation braced for a weekend of violence.

The disruption? Self-proclaimed guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had been found guilty of raping two female devotees in a case that first came to light in 2002. In the town of Panchkula in Haryana state, thousands of followers of the 50-year-old “godman” protested the verdict by burning vehicles, overturning press vans and pelting security forces with stones. By the time the authorities had regained control, at least 38 people were dead and more than 200 were injured. On the Monday following the weekend of mayhem, a judge sentenced Ram Rahim to 20 years in prison.

Twenty to 30 years ago these [cases] would probably not get reported. No one came forward because no one dared to come forward.

Narendra Nayak, president, Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations

While that mayhem grabbed plenty of headlines, it was hardly an isolated incident involving a rogue spiritual leader. In fact, Ram Rahim joins a growing list of so-called godmen who trail accusations and convictions of serious crimes. No agency or watchdog group compiles data on this type of criminal case, but since 2010 there have been at least six similar high-profile incidents, including Asaram Bapu, a revered spiritual guru and household name in India who was accused in 2013 of raping a 16-year-old girl on the pretext of ridding her of an evil spirit. (He remains in jail while his case drags through the courts.)

According to Swati Parashar, a political science expert and senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg, sexual exploitation by so-called gurus has been taking place for decades. But what’s new is their increased visibility, she says. And the reason for that, adds Sanjay Srivastava, professor of sociology at Delhi University, is a greater awareness of the contemporary guru as a politically connected public figure and icon of consumerism.

Despite so many cases coming to light, these gurus continue to hold sway over considerable portions of the Indian public. Parashar explains that they have come to fill the voids left by the state. “Many of these gurus run educational institutions [and] hospitals for their followers,” she says, and the followers, especially those who feel marginalized, consider the gurus a path to fulfill their material and spiritual needs. “Many followers are willing to become unquestioning subjects — and willing to put up with a great deal of objectionable behavior — because to follow a rich (and hence successful) guru is to live in the hope that some of his worldly success might rub off on you,” Srivastava tells OZY.

Despite his conviction, the long-haired, thickly bearded Ram Rahim remains for the moment the head of a cult and social welfare group named Dera Sacha Sauda, which translates as “abode of the fair deal.” While Ram Rahim lived in a sprawling, pink-walled mansion in Sirsa and owned a fleet of flashy luxury cars, the more than 60 million followers of the sect are mostly poor, uneducated and rural residents of northern states like Haryana and Punjab. For a religious leader, he has pursued some decidedly secular activities: He’s a musician, music producer, film producer and actor who starred in a movie titled Messenger of God in which he portrayed himself as a motorcycle-riding superhero.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh leader of Dera Sacha Sauda

And yet according to local news reports, he has led sanitation drives, organized disaster relief and established welfare agencies. Shadowing these good works are accusations of murdering a Dera Sacha Sauda manager and a journalist who published an anonymous letter in 2002 accusing the so-called saint of sexual exploitation. According to the Indian Express, both murder cases against Ram Rahim are set to be heard in September. In 2014 Ram Rahim also allegedly urged some 400 followers to get castrated in order to meet God directly, local media reported.

Perhaps what was most shocking about the Ram Rahim riots was that a sizable portion of the crowd that gathered to defend him consisted of women. Narendra Nayak, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, has dedicated his life to debunking fake religious leaders. He claims the guru’s followers are brainwashed to such an extent that they even find a way to rationalize rape. “Some women supporters said that the girls were raped as a penance,” says Nayak, “and that he was actually doing them a favor by raping them.”

These gurus also influence politicians and celebrities. According to Nayak, the nexus of politicians and gurus is so strong that “sometimes they act as conduits for money between one another.” And this intersection is the biggest obstacle that rationalists face when trying to expose fraudulent individuals, says Nayak. “That man who sits there is not alone; he’s a figurehead,” he says, calling the mutts, or spiritual organizations run by the gurus, “centers of power, money and exploitation.” Confronting them can be extremely dangerous, as evidenced by the recent murder of journalist and rationalist Gauri Lankesh, an outspoken critic of extremist Hindu nationalism. “Twenty to 30 years ago, these things would probably not get reported,” says Nayak. “No one came forward because no one dared to come forward.” Nayak too has received death threats and even assassination attempts, and now has a government-appointed armed bodyguard with him at all times.

Skeptics see some of these cases stuck in the judicial system, like the proceedings against Asaram Bapu, or get swept under the rug when powerful people are involved. Fortunately, the Ram Rahim case has generated the robust public discourse that we need, says Parashar, adding that the other cases need to be brought to the public’s attention in a similar way.

The fact that the court found Ram Rahim guilty is in itself a great victory. But even before the decision could be celebrated, it was marred by the violence it sparked.

Here’s what 9 Wall Street gurus think about the Fed’s rate hike https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-9-wall-street-gurus-think-about-the-feds-rate-hike-2/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-9-wall-street-gurus-think-about-the-feds-rate-hike-2/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 12:52:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-what-9-wall-street-gurus-think-about-the-feds-rate-hike-2/ FILE PHOTO: Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as a television screen displays coverage of U.S. Federal Reserve Chairmman Janet Yellen, in New York, New York, U.S. December 16, 2015. The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates on Wednesday, raising its target federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a range of 0.75% to 1.0%.

The rate hike is seen as a vote of confidence in the US economy, which has witnessed increasing inflation and job growth.

All of the members of the Federal Open Market Committee except for the Minneapolis Fed governor, Neel Kashkari, voted in favor of a rate hike.

Here’s a roundup of reactions from Wall Street firms following Wednesday’s decision.

Societe Generale, Albert Edwards

“So finally the Fed has got its ‘a’ into ‘g’ and raised rates. Although this will be the first of many rate rises in a move to normalise rates, the Fed’s lack of verbal assertiveness means the market still cannot bring itself to believe the Fed’s own projections for interest rate hikes.”

Goldman Sachs, Richard Ramsden

“The Federal Reserve hiked the fed funds rate by 25 bps on March 15, while language around risks was modestly upgraded. Notably, the Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) still suggests a total of three (i.e., two additional) hikes this year — which implies modest upside to our ’17/’18 EPS estimates. While the statement was largely as expected, stocks sold off on what appears to be positioning-related factors. We think that, from here, investors are trying to frame (1) potential upside from faster/more than expected hikes against eventually inflecting deposit betas and (2) to what extent rates will help to offset some of the recent weakness in loan growth. In our coverage, we see most absolute earnings upside from higher short rates in CMA, SCHW, ZION, and BAC.”

JPMorgan, Michael Feroli

“As widely expected, today the Fed raised the target fed funds range by 25 basis points to 0.75-1.0%. The FOMC’s interest rate forecast ‘dots’ pointed to unchanged guidance on their expectations of three hikes this year followed by another three hikes next year. They continue to see the neutral rate at around 3.0%. The dot plot came in at the dovish end of the range of outcomes, particularly since the tone of Fed-speak has become more optimistic since early December.”
