Sony Pictures is shifting some of the movies intended for release towards the end of 2018.

First up, is a big delay for James Gunn’s mysterious horror film BrightBurn, which will now open in May of 2019. But the film’s original November 2018 release date will be filled by another horror film called The Possession of Hannah Grace. Meanwhile, there’s a release date now in place for the psychological thriller The Intruder, and a later release date for the comedy Holmes and Watson. Get all the new release date details below.

First up, Sony Pictures is sending James Gunn’s BrightBurn into theaters on May 24, 2019. It’s not clear why the movie has been pushed back so far from the film’s original November 30 release date this year, but there’s a good chance it has something to do with the controversy surrounding the director being fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We still don’t know much about the movie, but now we have more time to learn about it as we wait another six months for it to release.

But those looking for scares will be able to check out The Possession of Hannah Grace on November 30, 2018 instead. The film follows a disgraced ex-cop and recovering addict who takes a job in a graveyard shift at the morgue of the hospital in which she got sober. Soon after a mysterious and brutally massacred body is delivered to the morgue, the woman begins to witness terrorizing and violent murders, leading her to face off against an evil entity.

Wrapping up the end of 2018 will be Holmes and Watson, the comedic take on Sherlock Holmes starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. The film directed by Tropic Thunder writer Etan Coen was originally slated to arrive on November 9, 2018, but it’s been bumped back for a holiday release of December 21, 2018. Perhaps the studios sees more success for families to see the film while they’re home for Christmas.

Finally, Sony Pictures has given an April 26, 2019 release date to The Intruder, a new psychological thriller from director Deon Taylor. The film stars Michael Ealy and Meaghan Good as a married couple who buys a beautiful Napa Valley home only to find that the man they bought it from (Dennis Quaid) refuses to let go of the property. Oh, and he slowly terrorizes them. How fun!

James Gunn may no longer be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.  3, but he’ll still play a part in how the film turns out. Brother Sean Gunn, who plays Kraglin and provides motion-capture for Rocket Raccoon, has confirmed rumors that Gunn’s Guardians 3 script will still be used in the film, whenever it gets made. Back in August, a rumor surfaced that despite his firing, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script would still be used. Since then, however, some things have changed. For one thing, production on the film has been shut down, with the pre-production crew told they were free to seek other work. After that news broke, co-star Dave Bautista (who has been very vocal about his displeasure over Gunn’s firing) said the film was “on hold indefinitely”, which seems to indicate it’s going to be quite some time before production starts up again. But if and when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 happens, James Gunn’s script will indeed be used.

At least, that’s what Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn says. Gunn, who plays Kraglin in the franchise and doubles for Rocket on set, told Tulsa World that Disney and Marvel are definitely using his brother’s script. “I know Disney still wants to make the movie,” Gunn said. “I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote.”

Gunn added:

“Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him…but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air. Obviously, I think it’s a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in — and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can’t be easy. But I know that they plan on making the movie. I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, ‘Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We’re just not sure when yet.’”

James Gunn was fired from Guardians 3 in July when old, tasteless and highly offensive joke-tweets were brought to light. Since Gunn’s firing, there’s been a vocal outcry to reinstate him as director, but Disney’s Bob Iger remains firm in his decision. Still, if Gunn’s script does end up being used, as Sean Gunn says, there’s a chance Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might still have Gunn’s signature touch, if not his directorial style. As of now, though, the third entry in the series remains in limbo.

James Gunn knows a thing or two about horror movies. Before he became known for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he got his start working for the low-budget studio Troma, where he wrote Tromeo & Juliet, and he went on to write the fantastic 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead and made his feature directorial debut with 2006’s Slither, a creature feature starring Nathan Fillion.

As we creep toward Halloween, Gunn took to Facebook to share a list of his top 50 favorite horror movies of all time. While some of his choices are expected (The Thing, Rosemary’s Baby), there are a couple that you’re not likely to find on many other lists out there. Check out the filmmaker’s full list below.

In case you’re looking for some horror movies to watch in this Halloween season, here are a few of my favorites, in kinda-sorta order of preference. I of course am not including the movies I had a hand in, such as Slither, Dawn of the Dead, or The Belko Experiment. Those are films you should, obviously, watch first.

Again, there are some excellent and expected choices in here: films like Jaws, Alien, The Host, The Birds, Saw, The Shining, etc. There are a couple I take issue with: Aliens strikes me as more of an action movie than a horror film, and personally I find Green Room to be more of a siege thriller than a straight-up horror flick. And The Faculty, the Robert Rodriguez-directed high school movie from the late ’90s? How many of you even remember that film existed? But hey, that’s the fun part about these kinds of lists – we can all argue about his picks, and hopefully this will inspire people to check out some of these movies that they haven’t seen. I know I still have a few to cross off my own list (The Brood, House, Martin, etc).

A couple of things worth noting: in a Facebook comment, he clarifies that he included horror films with comedy elements but not comedies with horror elements, otherwise What We Do in The Shadows would be on the list. Some of his responses to incredulous Facebook comments on his post are super entertaining – he basically says that The Exorcist, Silence of the Lambs, and Halloween don’t do much for him these days, and he considered putting Frighteners, Return of the Living Dead, and The Invitation on the list before making his final cuts. Also, Gunn must really love Invasion of the Body Snatchers because two versions appear in his top 15. And finally, because he’ll never be able to escape questions about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, someone suggested that he cast Brad Pitt as Adam Warlock, and he diplomatically responded, “Would definitely not be my choice for that character.”

Hot off the blockbuster success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn is reviving a TV classic for Amazon. The tech giant’s studio arm has landed the rights to the Starsky and Hutch reboot, with Gunn penning the script alongside his brother Brian Gunn, and cousin Mark Gunn.

The new series will reportedly be a continuation of the original 1970s show, and is being described as a deconstruction of the buddy cop genre, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It seems Gunn managed to find time to develop the idea between writing Guardians 3 and starting preproduction on the Marvel threequel. The director may also helm the show’s pilot if his busy schedule allows him to. It’s still early days, so there’s no word on who will assume the lead roles, made famous by David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser.

Amazon’s latest win sees it aping the strategy of a streaming rival by resurrecting an iconic TV series. Last year, Netflix unveiled Fuller House, its spinoff of the ’80s family sitcom. The VOD giant also cashed in on its subscribers’ collective nostalgia by rebooting the classic children’s animation Voltron: Legendary Defender.

In case you’re too young to remember, Starsky and Hutch followed the exploits of two street-smart cops (Detective Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson’ and Detective Dave Starsky). Accompanied by their red 1974 Ford Torino (and with the aid of police snitch Huggy Bear) the two buddies went around busting criminals. A film reboot, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, was released in 2004. And, the show even spawned a video game the previous year.

Gunn seems a solid choice for the revival. The director cut his teeth on reboots and remakes before making the jump to the Marvel fold — his screenplay credits include Scooby Doo and Dawn of the Dead. He also happens to be a sucker for ’70s tunes, as evidenced by the Guardians soundtrack.
