A Kansas City, KS man shot himself in the stomach after setting his .22 down on his couch. He hadn’t even fired off the celebratory gunshot yet. No word on if he’s been spared the indignity of criminal charges.

It’s easy to laugh at these types, because they’re only hurting themselves, but a 6-year-old girl in Oakland, CA hit in the head with a stray bullet from “celebratory gunfire” while playing in her backyard serves as a sober reminder that what goes up must come down. She is in stable condition, as is the 9-year-old Atlanta, GA boy who caught a bullet in the stomach while setting off fireworks in his front yard with his family.

In Baltimore, MD, a 14-year-old boy had a bullet graze his head while watching the holiday fireworks. The shooting was believed to be unintentional; six other shootings in the city that night weren’t, including one which left a 17-year-old dead. 

A Raleigh, NC woman was hit in the chest with a falling bullet as she rang in the new year at the city’s outdoor ceremonies, where guns are very thoroughly prohibited. The bullet narrowly missed a lung, passing through her stomach before lodging in her hip. A San Leandro, CA woman was also hit with a stray bullet while standing on her balcony watching the fireworks, but did not require hospitalization.

Staying inside was no defense, either, as an Indianapolis, IN woman found out when she was hit in the stomach with a stray bullet as she celebrated in her apartment with her family. Several other Indianapolis residents reported property damage from stray bullets. 

Firing guns in the air is a crime in most US jurisdictions, though the severity ranges from a class-B misdemeanor à la “disorderly conduct” (Ohio) to a felony carrying three years in prison (California). Bullets fired into the air return to earth at 300 feet per second and regularly kill people. That doesn’t stop thousands of people from firing them off, of course.

Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford, Jr., 21, was killed by a police officer responding to the Thursday shooting at Hoover’s Riverchase Galleria, which left one 18-year-old and one 12-year-old injured.

“All injured journalists immediately received necessary on-site medical assistance by medics from the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation. Their lives are not in danger,” the ministry said in a statement. The journalists have been evacuated to a hospital to receive further treatment, the ministry added. One of the injured journalists, NTV’s Ivliyev has already contacted his channel, confirming the events.

REN TV’s correspondent Valentin Trushin has provided his account of the incident. The skirmish was prompted by flags put up by the group the journalists arrived with.

“The civilians were fraternizing with the servicemen, taking photos, everything was fine…” Trushin told the channel. “We’ve boarded the bus – and then shooting erupted. Turns out they’ve fired into the air. The militants swarmed the area and tried to disperse the civilians and take down the flags. A flag was torn down. Civilians pelted the militants with stones and then one of them got hit. The militant then fired erratically and hits our bus.”

The journalists were spared from sustaining more serious injuries because they promptly got on the floor of the bus when the shooting began, Trushin said, adding that the bus was “packed.”

The town of Douma remains the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. The militants, mainly from the Jaysh al-Islam group are being evacuated from the town, following the agreement brokered by the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.

Douma came into the media spotlight over the past few days, following the alleged chemical incident reported on Saturday. Pro-militant sources, namely the controversial White Helmets group, claimed that a chlorine-filled munition struck the area, affecting dozens of civilians. The site of the purported attack has since been surrendered by the militants and explored by Russian military specialists, who found no signs of chemical attack or its victims.

The alleged incident, despite lacking any solid facts, has been taken at face value by the US and some other Western countries, who pinned the blame for it on Damascus and Moscow, and they have threatened to attack Syria. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump vowed to launch “nice and new and ‘smart’” missiles on Syria and told Russia to “get ready” for it. Moscow has earlier stated it would shoot down any incoming munitions and target the launch sites.

Interior minister Gerard Collomb travelled to Calais in the wake of the violent flare-up and conceded that the situation has become “intolerable for the people of Calais and migrants.” The immigrant problem in Calais has persisted despite the infamous “Jungle” refugee camp being dismantled in 2016.

Calais residents told RT that migrant-related violence has become a common occurrence, disrupting their way of life and forcing them to be on guard all the time. “There is a lot of delinquency here. Vehicles get damaged. Every day we have issues. Young girls can’t go out alone at night,” a local man said.

Another resident described the current situation as “a catastrophe for the French, especially for the people of Calais.”

“The violence is really damaging. Residents of Calais have lived in fear for several years now,” she said.

After the “Jungle” was demolished, about 6,000 migrants were transferred to shelters across France. The move did not solve the problem, however. It’s estimated that up to 800 migrants are still living in Calais, setting up makeshift camps with hopes to cross over the English Channel into Britain.

While the inflow of migrants has dwindled, the ones who remain poses an even bigger threat, a woman told RT. “Those coming here now are a bit different from the refugees who were coming here initially. They are more violent and aggressive. We are vigilant,” she said.

The violence has not subsided over the years, another woman agreed. “People are still being shot. It’s still dangerous. And it’s true that people who live near this area are constantly being disturbed.”

Scuffles between migrants are not new in Calais, but the use of firearms by migrants signals a turning point, since migrants typically have no means to buy guns. “It’s starting to get scary. Firearms. We are not in the United States here. There is still a country where weapons are banned,” a man said.

Authorities suspect that the man who opened fire Thursday was a human trafficker from Afghanistan. Smugglers started shooting when they “got angry” that some of the migrants did not have money, a witness to the incident told AFP.

Collomb laid the blame on “totally organized” migrant gangs and traffickers for inciting the violence. “These networks must be broken up,” he said. In response, Collomb dispatched two extra police units to Calais and said a new migrant bill would be drafted by the government in the next few weeks. The system of meal handouts previously managed by charity groups would be placed under government control to prevent further violent clashes, the interior minister said.

The latest outbreak of violence in Calais comes two weeks after French President Emmanuel Macron secured a deal with British PM Theresa May to bolster border controls between France and Britain. Macron reiterated Paris’ zero tolerance attitude towards illegal migrants, but promised to open new reception centers and to handle the situation in a “humane and efficient manner.”

The Marshal Fahim Military Academy in the Afghan capital of Kabul has come under attack with a series of explosions and heavy gunfire heard at the compound, according to local media.

Armed militants launched the assault on the entrance to the academy around 5am local time, TOLO News reports citing eyewitnesses and a source inside the camp.

Afghan security forces responding to the incident have reportedly blocked off all roads in the area. There are so far no official reports of fatalities or injuries.

Marshal Fahim Military Academy was the target of an attack last October, when a suicide bombing killed 15 Afghan Army cadets as they were leaving the facility located near Qambar square in Afghanistan’s capital.

Afghanistan has been gripped by a spate of deadly attacks over the past two week. The latest incident comes just two days after a powerful explosion rocked the Afghan capital’s diplomatic district, killing 103 people and injuring at least 235, including 30 police officers. The explosive device was planted in an ambulance and went off at a police checkpoint in a Taliban-claimed attack.

Earlier on Wednesday, gunmen attacked the offices of the international NGO Save the Children in the city of Jalalabad. The assault, which left two dead and 12 injured, was later claimed by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group.

A week before, gunmen armed with light weapons and rocket-propelled grenades stormed the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, taking hostages. The Taliban-claimed attack resulted in a 12-hour standoff leading to the death of 22 people. The US State Department later confirmed that American citizens were among foreigners who lost their lives in the siege.

An Afghan TV station cut its broadcast when armed men stormed its offices in Kabul, following reports of an explosion and gunfire in the area.

The attack targeted Afghan television station Shamshad TV in central Kabul, according to multiple eye-witness reports. The television station stopped broadcasting shortly after the Tuesday attack.  It is not clear how many were left dead or injured; ambulances and security forces have arrived in the area.

The Taliban have denied any involvement in the attack, according to TOLO News.

An Australian man with the room next to the gunman’s says he’s “shaken” by Sunday’s attack.

Brian Hodge wasn’t in the room when 64-year-old retired accountant Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor concert across the street, killing 59 people and wounding more than 500. Instead, the 36-year-old was returning to the hotel after dinner, and made it up to the 32nd floor, when shots rang out.

Eventually, Hodge took shelter in the bushes outside the Mandalay Bay hotel.

Paddock had 23 guns in the room where he had been staying since Thursday.

Hodge says it’s “unsettling” to think he had been sleeping next to a room filled with guns and ammunition.

Aldean was seemingly the final act to perform at the Sunday night concert, starting at 9:40pm local time.

Videos show Aldean still on stage singing as the sounds of gunfire can be heard ringing out.

Fox News suggests he was in the midst of the final song of his set.

At time of writing, he has not yet taken to social media to comment on the ongoing situation near Mandalay Bay.

Aldean is a massive name in the US, having scored three Number One albums on the Billboard 200. On the US Country chart, he has amassed five. At the Country Music Awards he is a regular fixture, having won multiple prizes. He’s also been nominated for four Grammys.

In 2010 he collaborated with Kelly Clarkson on the song ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’, which appeared on her Greatest Hits: Chapter One collection as well as her 2011 opus Stronger.

Aldean was last week confirmed for a Country Rising concert on November 12, in aid of those affected by the recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and other areas.

Tickets for that show are set to go on sale this Friday, per an announcement last Thursday.

The shooting began at around 10:30pm local time (5:30am in the UK), with witnesses reporting that hundreds of shots were fired.

Las Vegas police have confirmed via Twitter that they do not believe there are any more shooters, having previously said one suspect was “down”.

Flights have been diverted from Las Vegas McCarran airport.

One person was killed and three more injured last night in gunfire in front of a club in the Hohenschönhausen neighborhood in northwestern Berlin, local police reported.

Local newspaper BZ reports that the gunfire occurred around 2:15am local time (12:15am GMT) outside a night club in Ribnitzer Strasse.

So far there are no reports regarding the severity of the injuries of the three people. The incident was apparently preceded by a dispute between several people.

Police have cordoned off the area and say that the motive is not clear yet.

Several gunmen, including at least one dressed as a doctor, attacked a military hospital in an area close to the US Embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Witnesses told Reuters that the attackers engaged security forces inside the building.

Abdul Qadir, a worker at the hospital, told Reuters that a number of gunmen appeared to be inside the hospital. He said he saw one gunmen dressed as a doctor take out an AK-47 and open fire, killing at least one patient and one hospital worker. He also heard shots from several other points.

The 400-bed military hospital is located near two civilian hospitals in the Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul, home to several heavily guarded embassies.

According to Afghan TOLO News, citing a doctor at the Sardar M. Daud Khan Hospital, fighting is still underway between security forces and attackers.

The assailants apparently first set off an explosion at the entrance of the building before entering the facility. A security source told the media outlet that at least five suicide bombers targeted the hospital.

Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the defense ministry, said a number of attackers have entered the hospital.

“Our security forces are on location fighting the attackers but also keeping in mind to not cause any casualties, so it is a difficult situation,” he told Al Jazeera.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack on the military hospital, TOLO News reports.

The latest attack comes after at least 15 people were killed and wounded in coordinated attacks on a police station and an intelligence service office in Kabul last Wednesday, which were claimed by Taliban militants.
