September 21, 2018

These are no ordinary wells. The ‘singing wells of Namunyak’ are where Kenya’s Samburu hersdsmen go to sing love songs to their cows. Oh, and to discuss village matters, plan raids and dance with their partners. Gavin Haines gets a rare insight.

The guns, I want to know about the guns: What’s with all the AK-47s?

First, though, let’s talk about cows, which are arriving in ever-greater numbers at this dried-up riverbed in Kenya’s Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. There are thousands of them and they’ve come to slay their thirst at the dozen or so water troughs that are scattered across the parched earth. Everything is thirsty here.

Next to each trough is a well and in each well a human chain comprised of lithe young men, who pass buckets of water up from the darkened depths to the sunny surface. The men in the wells are naked—their bodies glisten with sweat—and they are singing love songs in the Samburu tongue; not to their wives, who are washing clothes nearby, but to their cows, who are mainly mooing and pooing.

“I will always be with you, I will always be behind you—you are my lovely cows,” translates Robert Lemayian, a Samburu herdsman and tour guide, as we eavesdrop at one of the wells. “You have to let them know that you will protect them,” he adds, citing big cats as the main cause of anxiety amongst cattle.

There may be as many as 300 cows in one herd, says Robert, but every animal has a name; and when their name echoes from the well, it’s their turn to come and have a drink.

Chaperoning them to the troughs are young boys—tomorrow’s herdsmen—who have sticks and aren’t afraid to use them. Thwack. The sound of wood on hide. Thwack. And again. I’m struck by the contrast between the sweet songs of the wells and the boys’ overzealous use of their sticks.

There’s also the not-so-small matter of the AK-47s, which some men have slung over their shoulders. Soviet-made Kalashnikovs, it transpires, are the latest addition to the Samburu’s already potent arsenal, which includes a knife, spear and wooden club known as a runga.

Robert says the rifles act as a warning to enemy spies, who routinely survey the wells. Hiding in nearby bushes, they identify the herdsmen with the most cows and the least security, before returning home, in some cases walking for several days, often into neighboring Somalia, to pass on their intel. Cattle raids will likely follow.

But not if the Samburu strike first, which I’m told they often do. Indeed, many raids on enemy tribes have been plotted at these wells, which, during the dry season, draw herdsmen from far and wide.

The Samburu people, says Robert, believe they have a divine right to all cows. “Cattle are sacred to us,” he explains. “We don’t believe we are stealing livestock from other people; we believe that we are bringing home what belongs to us.”

The Samburu rarely steal cattle from each other, he says, but they will walk for many days to relieve rival tribes of their herds.

“We take anything from four to 200 cattle—it’s very violent,” says Robert, who’s wearing traditional Samburu clothing of beaded necklaces, colorful bracelets and a red and blue cloth that resembles a skirt. “We shoot to kill. We lose quite a lot of young men.”

Being at the wells and hearing these stories is a great privilege. Few tourists venture up here and those who do aren’t permitted to take photographs, which seems entirely appropriate given the intimacy of the setting.

Not living vicariously through my lens affords me the opportunity to thoroughly take it all in. I look in awe at the scene: The naked men, the colorfully-dressed women, the scrawny cows, the stick-wielding boys, the guards with AK-47s and the distant bushes that may or may not harbor enemy spies. It’s like nothing I’ve seen anywhere, ever.

Though most people seem to be working hard, the wells are also a place for play. “In the evenings, we sing and dance with our girlfriends and record it on our phones,” says Robert. “Afterwards you play it back and if it is not good, you delete it and do it again.”

The wells are also a place to exchange news; of births, marriages and deaths. “We come here to get information,” says Robert, likening the experience to reading a newspaper. “If there is a wedding happening, then you find out about it here.”

(Welcome to /Response, the companion piece to our /Answers series and a space where /Film readers can chime in and offer their two cents on a particular question.)

Earlier this week, the /Film team wrote about their favorite movie gunfights of all time. We then opened the floor to our readers: what is your favorite cinematic gun battle? And you let us know!

We have collected our favorite answers (edited for length and clarity) below. Next week’s question: what comic book series (superhero or not) should be made into a TV series? Send your (at least one paragraph, please) answer to slashfilmpitches@gmail.com!

The Matrix

While there could be 40 different scenes from either John Wick film to choose from, I am going with younger…well, that doesn’t work as he doesn’t age…eh, beardless Keanu Reeves. The lobby scene in The Matrix still stands out to me as the best gunfight in modern cinema. Cue that pre-EDM synth!

Before the overuse of computer generated effects and green screens permeated all action scenes, you have a practical set that just gets destroyed throughout the firefight. The debris flying around Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss as they lay waste to all the cops is a sight to behold, especially in slow motion. Trinity kicking the shotgun over the officer’s shoulder directly into her hands as she shoots him in the back in one fluid motion is the ultimate BAMF move. And who could forget those outfits?! Nothing screams the end of the ’90s more than your main characters decked out in black and sporting a trench coat.

The Matrix was the first DVD I ever purchased, and the second I inserted it into the player, I went directly to this scene (without having to fast forward, WHAT A MIRACLE!). From the moment the revolving doors open and the music starts, to the point that final piece of the pillar falls to the ground, it is non-stop entertainment. If only those metal detectors were outside! (Chase Dunnette)

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Sometimes, you don’t know what you are getting into until it hits you in the face. Literally. My favorite gun fight off all time isn’t your typical back-and-forth, raining bullets, shoot ’em up. In fact the whole fight begins and end with a single shot fired. When Indiana Jones runs into a scimitar-wielding foe, you just know it’s about to go down. This is an action adventure movie after all! An awesome sword fight through the streets of Cairo is just the sort of thing one would expect to see in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Of course, before either man even has a chance to take a step, Indiana Jones channels his inner Han Solo, pulls out his revolver, and shoots first. Just like the swordsman in the film, the audience has no clue they are about to walk into a gunfight until it’s over. This moment is easily one of the most memorable scenes in the Indiana Jones series, and perfectly captures both Indy’s sense of humor and swagger that makes him so cool. (Taylor Griffin)

***

People might say this doesn’t count, but it is a fight, and it does involve a gun. The best part of it is that it wasn’t even supposed to happen. Harrison Ford was supposed to fight the guy with a sword. It was going to be a big Spielberg-adventure-movie-sword-fight scene! But the legend goes that Ford had food poisoning, was too sick to do it and just improvised shooting the guy. It is one of the best parts in an almost perfect movie, and they say it happened on a whim. Is that true? It doesn’t matter. When the legend becomes fact, we print the legend; and this is one of the most famous legends in cinematic history. I can’t imagine the movie without that scene, it’s so Indy, it’s so Spielbergian and breaks the tension of the moment perfectly. There are no big special effects, no choreography, and no stunts –  just two guys, one gun, and perfect timing. Boom – movie magic. (Matt Vernier)

Shoot ‘Em Up

One I’m sure you’ll get many submissions for Shoot ‘Em Up, a movie whose general insanity is only outstripped by its gunfights. There are even a few great moments to choose from here as Smith (Clive Owen) manages to kill a guy with a carrot and complete an entire gun battle while holding a baby. But to top it all off, he manages to have another battle while…making a baby with Donna (Monica Bellucci). I can only imagine what the production meetings were like:

Writer: Okay, so this guy Smith is just basically the world’s biggest badass.

Director: How can we really show how badass he is? I mean I like the whole gunfight with a baby thing, but we need one more set piece.

Writer: Alright, now, just bear with me…what if he has a gunfight while he’s having sex?

Director: It just might work.

And it does! This is the only movie I’ve ever seen that could even pull something like this off. Shoot ‘Em Up isn’t a great movie, but it does take the cake in crazy gunfights. (Seth Finck)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

This isn’t one of the scenes from the film that people talk most about. Nonetheless no gunfight speaks to me or moves me as much as this one. There is something so haunting about watching The T-800 – initially designed to do bad – helping John Connor save the future even if the people he’s shooting at will never inherently understand who he is or how he’s saving their lives. Shot mostly in haunting blue light, it’s melancholic, dark, beautiful and just plain exciting. Hell, when he says “Trust me” with a smile, it gives me goosebumps. Amidst all this he never once kills a cop as he specifically destroys most of their weaponry. Then he walks away silently as all the cops shoot him down – he has nothing to worry about but nothing to be proud of at all. After all, he’s just doing what he was programmed to do. (Justin Horowitz)

Tombstone

There are numerous gunfights in Tombstone, all of them fantastic, but my personal favorite is the shootout at the river. I love the visual of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday lying on their backs, scrambling in the dirt to reload, blindly firing their shotguns over the logs they’re hunkered behind. You really get the feel that they’ve been in a crossfire like this before. When they see they’re pinned in, the fact that Doc is trying to get Wyatt’s attention really says something their friendship. Doc knows him well enough to know he may do something crazy. And then Wyatt walks straight into enemy fire, and doesn’t take a single bullet. Everyone is amazed, and even his enemy, Curly Bill, smiles in awe. The slow motion “Nooo” before he shoots Curly Bill in the river is a little cheesy, but it doesn’t take away from the scene.

After the fight, Turkey Creek Jack Johnson and Texas Jack Vermillion’s exchange about the miraculous event lets you know that things like that just don’t happen. The best part about this scene is that the events in it are believed to be fairly true to life, according to a statement Wyatt Earp gave to the San Francisco Examiner in 1896. (Danielle Bullis)

The Way of the Gun

There are so many wonderful answers for this question. I could go with a western and name the climactic battle of Open Range or list off something cool like Desperado‘s Bar Brawl or any number of John Woo films. There’s even the absurdity of Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II, with that one gun fight where the camera constantly swirls around.

All of that said, I’ll take a step off the beaten path with Christopher McQuarrie’s The Way of the Gun. Much like the recent Free Fire, which takes a handful of characters and throws them into an abandoned warehouse for a messy, extended shootout, the finale of this kidnapping caper has lots of bullets being fired in a fairly plausible manner.

It helps that the stakes and goal is clear enough. Ryan Phillippe and Benicio del Toro’s characters are trying to reach their ransom, which has been placed in the center of what becomes a shooting arena. James Caan and his veteran team of bagman are there to stop them. The result is a lot of duck and cover shooting, reloads and some unfortunate wounds. It’s a high energy scene, thrilling to watch and full of determination on the part of our leads. It’s not flashy, it’s dirty and really neat to see, given the layout of the scene. (Aaron Neuwirth)

Every week in /Answers, we attempt to answer a new pop culture-related question. This week’s edition asks “What is your favorite movie gunfight of all time?” As always, we have submissions from the /Film writing crew and podcast team.

If you’d like to share your favorite movie gunfight, please send your thoughts to slashfilmpitches@gmail.com for a chance to be featured on the site. Find our choices below!

David Chen: Equilibrium

Okay, so Equilibrium is a movie that is super cheesy, low budget, and has aged poorly. But I already wrote about my love of Hard Boiled elsewhere, so let me just say this: I love the creativity of Equilibrium. While the idea of gun-kata may seem silly to some, I appreciate that Kurt Wimmer’s insane mind came up with the idea of dancing/posing while shooting people, and that he followed that basic idea through to its logical conclusion.

The final scene in the movie is an intense duel between Christian Bale and Angus McFadyen, but what I appreciate about it is it doesn’t actually have that much shooting. It’s just two guys, each trying really hard to prevent the other guy from shooting him in the face. The novelty of such a scene is already impressive, but even though the premise of the shootout is fundamentally silly, I still find it to be hypnotic and well executed sequence.

Peter Sciretta: Hard Boiled

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a fan of the long take. In fact, I’ve already written about two other long-takes in previous /Answers (Favorite Long Takes and Favorite Action scenes). This time, I am choosing the hospital shootout scene from John Woo’s seminal 1992 film Hard Boiled. Yes, David Chen featured this as his favorite action scene of all time and now I’m featuring it as my favorite movie gunfight. Like David, I remember the first time I ever saw this scene play on my DVD player, with my mouth hanging open in disbelief at the choreography and pure spectacle on display.

One reason long-takes are now trendy is because they are much easier to accomplish in the age of digital cameras. Back in the day, film was expensive and shooting a reel was burning money. Lighting a scene for film exposure was also far more difficult, and film cameras were a lot heavier than today’s digital counterparts. This makes the insanity of this scene all the more impressive.

The hospital shootout in Hard Boiled lasts nearly three minutes and features a ton of effects, including heavy gunfire, explosions, bullets blowing holes in the set, fire, and blood splatters, all of which was accomplished practically during shooting. Imagine being the on-set explosives guy who has to ready all the squids for this sequence! The scene is so masterfully choreographed and features Woo’s signature slow motion style. So many films have tried to top this sequence and no one has managed it.

Christopher Stipp: Heat

There’s something ominous in the atmosphere before the guns even come out and the Battle of North Hollywood begins.

Director Michael Mann, in choreographing the most tense 13 minutes you could ever watch, was able to balance the weight of making one of the most thrilling shootouts ever put to celluloid with making the action on the screen feel like there are real world stakes involved. Sure, you have stakes in other movies where guns determine the dramatic arc of whether good guys win or bad guys lose, but here, in this moment, everyone loses. There are no winners here and that’s part of this scene’s never ending allure. To see the deflation of the crew looking to take down a bank and the lives that are taken on both sides just illustrates why Heat continues to be a reference quality representation of how we both worship wanton violence in other movies and, in cases like this, stand in stark black and white about what real cops and robbers can do to one another.

One thing that I truly find remarkable about this scene is just how quiet it is. Leading up to the first shot being taken, there is a minimal amount of score in the background. It’s muted, very light and very tense, almost like white noise. But once Val Kilmer takes aim and squeezes the trigger, that music stops and it’s all about the ambient sounds of a true gun battle. The sounds of machine gun and shotgun fire, punctuated by screeching tires and screaming, followed by fits of silence…it’s all so eerie. The soundscape comes alive and only elevates the scene’s resonance long after it’s done.

Ethan Anderton: Hot Fuzz

It’s not easy to craft an action sequence that is simultaneously exciting and hilarious, but Edgar Wright does it all the time. What’s most impressive about Hot Fuzz is that he creates an awesome gunfight that is chock full of plenty of bullets, but doesn’t actually have a body count. In fact, most of the Neighborhood Watch Alliance isn’t even taken out by gunfire in the extended final fight in Sanford that spans several settings, but by various other weapons and items, like flower pots and bear traps. Since the climax actually spans so much time and so many locations, I’ve narrowed this down to the initial gunfight with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and the rest of the townspeople, which is chock full of brilliant callbacks to other jokes that were so carefully set up throughout the rest of the movie.
