The 71st Annual Writers Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles and New York City, and they were very good to the Jennings, Midge and Barry.

The Americans’ final season took home the gold for Drama Series, while The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel claimed the Comedy Series trophy. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won for Best Long-Form Adapted Series.

Showtime’s Homeland and HBO’s Barry earned individual episode accolades, with the latter also picking up the New Series award.

Children that were born when Star Citizen was first announced are now approaching Kindergarten, but the extremely ambitious space simulation is currently struggling to get its third alpha version into backers’ hands. Rather than continuing to wait, one group of impatient players has requested and apparently received a $ 45,000 refund for three of the game’s $ 15,000 “completionist” packages, which included access to dozens of optional ship designs among other extras.

An anonymous representative of the player group, going by the handle Mogmentum, posted about the refund on the Star Citizen Refunds Reddit group, which includes stories from hundreds of other posters seeking smaller refunds for the oft-delayed game. “We sidelined many other great games and commercial opportunities waiting for Star Citizen, but in the end we can’t wait any longer, and a new generation is joining also who have absolutely no interest,” Mogmentum writes, alongside photo and video evidence of forum discussions confirming the refunds. Getting the money back took five weeks of persistent requests with support staff, the player said, alleging that the staffers “definitely try to delay you as much as possible in the hope you’ll forget or give up.”

A $ 45,000 refund is a drop in the bucket compared to the over $ 159 million Star Citizen has raised from over 1.8 million paying customers as of press time. That itself is a far cry from the $ 2 million Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts initially sought for the game in his 2012 crowdfunding effort.

A writers’ strike that could have mirrored the 2007-08 stoppage that had an indelible impact on the TV (as well as film) industry has been averted, as the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) reached a tentative agreement early Tuesday morning, following seven weeks of talks.

Per our sister site Deadline, the three-year TV and film collective bargaining agreement, among other things, will offer better protections to the writers of short-order TV shows — an increasingly common phenomenon that had resulted in decreased paydays for basically working just as many hours.

The WGA’s health plan will also get a boost per the new agreement, which now goes to the WGA West and East’s respective councils for approval, before ratification by guild members.

The AMPTP also agreed to update to a logo not from the 1960s. (Kidding! #4amHumor.)

The WGA strike of 2007-08… well, it was a thing, kids. With no new scripts being churned out for three full months, numerous series saw their seasons trimmed or slashed, some shows (24, Chuck e.g.) had their premieres postponed, and a handful of already low-rated programs (The 4400, NBC’s Bionic Woman reboot… Cavemen) died on the vine. Meanwhile, a few shows (namely daytime soaps) brought in “scab” writers to keep the scripts flowing.

NFX Guild, a San Francisco-based accelerator program, hosted 21 startups at its fourth demo day this morning. The presenting companies are the latest additions to NFX Guild’s network of 66 alumni companies, which include Goldenkey, Ivy, and Zengaming. NFX Guid’s new entrepreneurs receive $ 120,000 in capital in exchange for a seven percent equity share and such benefits as mentoring and networking.

Held at the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley, entrepreneurs went onstage to pitch a field of angel and VC investors like Tim Draper and Andreessen Horowitz’s Jeffrey Jordan. Unlike Y Combinator or 500 Startups, NFX Guild does not have an open application policy. Startups must be referred to selected “scouts” before they are invited to apply to the accelerator.

NFX Guild was founded in 2015 by serial entrepreneurs James Currier, Stan Chudnovsky, and Gigi Levy Weiss to provide entrepreneurs with what they call a “network effect.” They aim to help founders reach product market fit faster by connecting them with the right people. NFX Guild is funded by CRV, Shasta Ventures, Greylock Partners, and Mayfield Fund.

This latest batch of startups represent healthcare, cybersecurity, augmented reality (AR), gaming, and consumer products, among other fields — half are B2C and half are B2B.

One new NFX Guild member is Frisbee, a video messaging platform launched by former Facebookers. “Video is taking over social,” said CEO Vadim Lavrusik, during his pitch. “The camera is the keyboard now.” The startup’s beta product saw users send approximately 12 videos a day — a way of communication that could take over simple messaging.

At least one other incoming member is also banking on new ways of communicating. Called Volley, this startup has created what CEO Max Child called “conversational gaming.” Translation: Building games on top of platforms like Facebook Chat or Amazon’s Alexa.

Moving into the virtual world, Aros has developed software to use AR for outdoor activities. CEO Alon Getz, a former Israeli Air Force pilot, told the audience of potential investors that so far, businesses have shied away from using AR outdoors because of challenges like weather and connectivity.

Death, however, remains the ultimate challenge, and not just for startups. Parting is a startup entering the funeral industry by providing business software to funeral homes. The SaaS-based business helps funeral home operators with logistics, advertising, and managing vendors. “Death is not something we like to think about, which is maybe why the tech industry has stayed away from it for so long,” said CEO Tyler Yamasaki. “It’s time for a rebirth.”

But while we’re all still alive, let’s try and make the most of it. That’s the pitch from Summer, a startup that wants to help employees better manage stress and anxiety at work. The startup combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with mindfulness via an online coach-assisted program. The service costs $ 25 per employee per year to assess employees’ well-being and match them with the right coach. “Until robots take our jobs, we all have to work!” said CEO Dhaval Chadha.

NFX Guild recently announced the launch of Signal, an online portal for founders to build their target investor list. So far 5,500 investor profiles have been crowdsourced by users of the platform — 1,400 of these investors have already claimed their profiles and are now active on Signal. The portal is free and available to every founder, even non NFX Guild alumni. And no invitation required!

The 69th Annual Writers Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles and New York City, and FX walked away with four of the most coveted trophies.

In World of Warcraft, major guilds race to pull off world firsts in new raids. It’s serious business. There are, however, limits. One member of a guild called Method thought it would be cool to sabotage another top guild’s efforts. It was not.

Jadelolz, a member of Method, hatched a plan to prevent a rival top guild, Serenity, from running WoW’s newest, toughest challenge: the Nighthold raid on Mythic difficulty. According to PCGamesN, Jadelolz and a friend named Isabellab invited a main raider from Serenity into a group. Then they entered the raid to fuck with Serenity’s raid ID, aka the thing that tracks your progress across multiple attempts. When Serenity charged in, swords and staves aloft in pursuit of the holy grail that is making a boss fall down before other people do, they got kicked because their ID was already being used by Jadelolz and co. They couldn’t make any progress.

At first, Serenity’s members were confused. Then they were pissed.

Ultimately, Blizzard admins stepped in and teleported Isabellab, who stayed logged in to continue hijacking the ID, out of the instance. Isabellab went on to claim he was seeking vengeance against a “fan base of Serenity” for an attack on Method’s server, Tarren Mill. “The downtime Serenity had was equal to the time lost for Method,” he said. He believes he “even[ed] out the race.”

Method say they did not condone Jadelolz and co’s actions. He’s now out of the guild. “If this was Jadelolz that griefed another guild, then he did so without our blessing,” tweeted Method founder and co-owner Scott ‘Sco’ McMillan. “Removed from guild until we know more after progress.”

“Nobody will be covering anything up,” added Method community manager Darrie. “What happened, happened. Jade didn’t act as Method. He had his own agenda.”
