Gina Prince-Bythewood made her name making tremendous dramas that I feel never got the proper respect that they deserved. Partly, this is due to the fact that she makes movies about women, which generally don’t get as much respect as they should. Partly, it’s because her best work were romances, such as “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” a genre that has rarely gotten its proper due since the turn of the 21st century. These romances were also connected to the worlds of women’s basketball and pop music, respectively, which many see as trivial.

This was not the lane Prince-Bythewood always saw herself in, though. At the heart of these films is classic Hollywood entertainment, and she looked to bring that to the action genre as well. She had signed up to make “Silver & Black” for Marvel and Sony, which would have been a film about Silver Sable and Black Cat from the Spider-Man universe, but that project fell apart. From that, she hopped over to another comic book property in “The Old Guard,” which starred Charlize Theron and was released on Netflix in 2020. While I don’t think “The Old Guard” is great cinema, it provided a much-needed respite from the horrors of the height of the pandemic.

For someone directing large-scale action for the first time, Gina Prince-Bythewood handled things admirably. The set pieces weren’t necessarily the most inventive. However, they were very well-shot, and Prince-Bythewood had an inherent knack for action geography. It was a great place to build from, and boy howdy, did she build on it for “The Woman King,” her 19th century African epic. Filmmaking is evolution, and Gina Prince-Bythewood knows how to use each film as something from which to learn.

It’s All In The Preparation

Some filmmakers hate rehearsal. They hope the spontaneity on the day of the shoot will be their saving grace. There’s a place for spontaneity if you’re John Cassavetes making “Husbands,” but on a big action movie, you can’t leave things to chance; action sequences are incredibly complicated and could cause serious harm. Rehearsal and preparation are vital elements to these films, and sadly, not all of them are allotted the time and budget to properly utilize them.

But Gina Prince-Bythewood understood the importance of getting everyone on the same page for “The Woman King.” Speaking with A.frame, she detailed how working on “The Old Guard” made her realize rehearsal was her friend:

“I learned in terms of what you need to do to prepare for stunts, how much you need to prepare the actors, how to work with your stunt and fight coordinator … It also gave me the knowledge of knowing what it takes to do really good action — how many takes it can be, that it has to be perfect on set or it will not be in your edit room. Even if you’re on take 22 and it’s not quite right, you can’t stop. You’re exhausted. The actors are exhausted. But you learn that, if it’s not on set, it’s not in the edit room, and you don’t have the scene.”

This prep resulted in every action sequence being rousing, brutal, and utterly thrilling. Every actor is in total command of their body, and you believe these are real warriors. Without proper rehearsal, “The Woman King” could look frenzied and hollow, and it couldn’t be further from those descriptors. Gina Prince-Bythewood learned how to be a great action filmmaker, and I want to see her canvases get even bigger.

WASHINGTON — In a surprise reversal Friday night, Coast Guard officials announced that service members will receive their regularly scheduled paychecks next week, despite the ongoing government shutdown.

In a message to all Coast Guard members, Vice Commandant Adm. Charles Ray said that service and Department of Homeland Security officials “identified a way to pay our military workforce on 31 December.”

Valery Ryumin has had a long career as an engineer and cosmonaut: he was twice named a Hero of the Soviet Union, a veteran of two long stints on the Salyut-6 space station (remarkably, he spent 175 days there in 1979 and returned again in 1980 for another 180 days), and eventually a crew member of space shuttle Discovery‘s mission to the Mir space station in 1998.

Now 79 years old but still a respected figure in Russian space circles, Ryumin has given a highly critical interview about the present and future of Roscosmos and the Russian space program. The interview was published on Pravda.ru, a pro-government news website with a nationalistic bent that is not related to the long-time newspaper of the Russian Communist Party, Pravda. It seems significant that this publication would feature such a negative view of Russia’s activities in space.

As part of the interview, Ryumin is asked about Russia’s stated plans to send humans to the Moon in the 2020s. “On what money?” he replies. “In recent years, the leaders are blowing more smoke than doing anything substantive.” (A translation of the interview was provided to Ars by Robinson Mitchell.)

They all look the same? Argentine honor guard mistakes Chinese official for President Xi (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/they-all-look-the-same-argentine-honor-guard-mistakes-chinese-official-for-president-xi-video/ https://briefnews.eu/they-all-look-the-same-argentine-honor-guard-mistakes-chinese-official-for-president-xi-video/#respond Fri, 30 Nov 2018 18:17:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/they-all-look-the-same-argentine-honor-guard-mistakes-chinese-official-for-president-xi-video/

Chinese President Xi Jinping was in for a full-on welcoming ceremony as he arrived in Argentina for the G20 summit. It seemed to kick off a little early, though – as soon as the honor guard saw a Chinese person exit the plane.

When the plane door opened, and a Chinese official stepped out, a member of the honor guard shouted the formal introduction for President Xi. Salutes were made and music started playing… except it wasn’t Xi – not yet.

The premature ceremony continued until the official made it all the way down the stairs, and for a few seconds after that, and had to be restarted once the actual Chinese president got off the plane.

It might not have gone off without a hitch, but at least Xi got a formal greeting – unlike French President Emmanuel Macron, who had to shake hands with airport staff on his way along the barren red carpet.

McGregor settles out of court with security guard who wanted $95K after being ‘hit by drinks cans’ https://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-settles-out-of-court-with-security-guard-who-wanted-95k-after-being-hit-by-drinks-cans/ https://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-settles-out-of-court-with-security-guard-who-wanted-95k-after-being-hit-by-drinks-cans/#respond Thu, 29 Nov 2018 12:16:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-settles-out-of-court-with-security-guard-who-wanted-95k-after-being-hit-by-drinks-cans/

MMA star Conor McGregor has agreed an out-of-court settlement after a Las Vegas security guard filed a $ 95,000 lawsuit against him for allegedly being hit by energy drinks cans at a UFC press conference in August 2016.

MGM Grand security guard William Pegg filed the lawsuit after being caught in the melee at the venue’s David Copperfield Theater ahead of McGregor’s hotly-anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

McGregor famously lost the first meeting between the pair at UFC 196, and tensions were high during fight week ahead of the rematch. Nowhere was that more apparent than during the pre-fight press conference.

When Diaz walked off stage and headed for the door mid-way through proceedings, it promoted an angry exchange between the two fighters that descended into a missile-throwing melee, as McGregor picked up a handful of unopened cans of Monster Energy drink and hurled them from the stage into the stalls, where Diaz and his team were standing.

Pegg claimed he was hit in the back and shoulder by cans thrown by McGregor during the fracas, and sued McGregor for a total of $ 95,000. The sum consisted of $ 5,000 in medical bills and an additional sum of $ 90,000, calculated as a share of McGregor’s $ 15 million earnings from UFC 202.

Attempts by Pegg’s legal team to bring McGregor to the witness stand were hampered by the Irishman’s lawyers, who had successfully moved the case to federal court in an attempt to keep the UFC superstar’s financial records private.

Pegg’s lawyers also claimed McGregor failed to show for a scheduled appearance due to his involvement in his subsequent attack on a bus containing Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 in Brooklyn.

“McGregor’s deposition was scheduled for April 6, 2018. However, McGregor did not appear for his deposition. Instead, on the night of April 5, he was throwing metal barriers and other objects at UFC 223, at which he was not scheduled to appear,” their statement read.

But Pegg withdrew his complaint at Nevada Federal Court this week after the two sides of the lawsuit came to a settlement out of court.

McGregor is set to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission on December 10 to face sanctions for his involvement in the post-fight brawl after his loss to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October. Nurmagomedov is also scheduled to appear at the hearing.

Both men are expected to be handed suspensions and fines for the incident at the T-Mobile Arena, and will not be booked to compete in their next respective bouts until matters with the commission have been resolved.

Earlier this week McGregor appeared in court in his native Ireland, where he was banned from driving for six months and handed a €1,000 (US$ 1,130) over charges of speeding.

Russian Border Guard ships have been chasing Ukrainian vessels that violated the border and were approaching Kerch Strait that separates Crimea from Russian mainland.

The video taken from one of the Russian ships shows Ukraine’s artillery boats and a tugboat maneuvering dangerously closed to Russia’s vessels.

The incident came as the Ukrainian Navy ships crossed into the Russian territorial sea without authorization, seeking to pass through the Kerch Strait. The actions of the Ukrainian vessels prompted the Russian border guards to intervene.
The FSB, which is responsible for maintaining Russia’s borders, denounced the Ukrainian vessels’ actions as a deliberate provocation aimed at creating “conflict situations” in the region.

US Coast Guard ‘removed’ after making ‘white power’ hand signal on live TV (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/us-coast-guard-removed-after-making-white-power-hand-signal-on-live-tv-video/ https://briefnews.eu/us-coast-guard-removed-after-making-white-power-hand-signal-on-live-tv-video/#respond Sat, 15 Sep 2018 16:17:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-coast-guard-removed-after-making-white-power-hand-signal-on-live-tv-video/

The US Coast Guard has “removed” one of its members from the Hurricane Florence response team after he allegedly made a ‘white power’ hand signal during a live TV broadcast.

The unidentified team member made the “offensive” ‘OK’ hand gesture while looking into the camera during a live broadcast with Sector Charleston Commanding Officer Captain John Reed on MSNBC.

The move was picked up by many viewers who took to social media to express their outrage at what they believed was an intentional display of a hate symbol. The Coast Guard responded to the outcry on Saturday by saying they had “removed” the member from the response team.

“We are aware of the offensive video on twitter – the Coast Guard has identified the member and removed him from the response. His actions do not reflect those of the United States Coast Guard,” the agency tweeted.

The universal hand signal has become a topic of debate after it reportedly started off as a 4chan hoax to “troll the libs” in 2017, but then actually became a symbol used by white supremacists and some Trump supporters. Just this month the wife of a US attorney, Zina Bash, denied flashing the symbol during a Senate hearing and insisted she was just resting her fingers in that position.

  • President Donald Trump reportedly told Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe “I remember Pearl Harbor” during a meeting at the White House in June, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
  • The reported comment is part of an increasingly complicated relationship between the two world leaders.
  • Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Japan, and Abe hasn’t retaliated.

President Donald Trump reportedly caught Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe off guard with a comment about Pearl Harbor during a meeting at the White House in June, according to the Washington Post.

Trump reportedly said “I remember Pearl Harbor” to Abe in what was described as a “tense” meeting, referring to the attack by Japan on the United States that led to the US entering World War II.
