Shelby American is reviving the legendary 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, planning an exclusive run of just 10 examples of the fastback and culminating what it calls the “unfinished business” of the muscle car’s parents, Carroll Shelby and Don McCain. Shelby also unveiled a new ultra-lightweight Series 2 roadster supercar at an event at its Southern California headquarters that boasts eye-popping output of more than 800 horsepower.
But let’s focus first on the Super Snake and its backstory.
The Super Snake and its big-block 427 cubic-inch V8 borrowed from the Ford GT40 Mk II race car originated in 1967 as an engineering study for high-speed tire testing by Goodyear. The modified engine raised output to 520 horsepower, and Shelby added heavy-duty front disc brakes, a Detroit Locker rear end, rear traction bars, Goodyear Thunderbolt tires and a redesigned grille for improved air cooling.
McCain, a former Shelby American employee, reportedly wanted to do a 50-car run of the muscle car, but the idea was ultimately scrapped as being too expensive. In more recent years, McCain worked with the Shelby engine division and pushed again to rebirth the Super Snake, signing 10 dash plates for the cars along with Carroll Shelby. McCain passed away a few years ago.
Shelby helmed the Super Snake at Goodyear’s test track in San Angelo, Texas, and pushed the car to 170 miles per hour. It later set a new top speed world record for its class.
But until now, a second example was never built, and the lone Super Snake prototype changed hands several times, selling at auction most recently in 2013 in Indianapolis for $ 1.3 million.
The new continuation versions will be built from original donor ’67 Mustangs with factory VINs and original titles and a Shelby serial number for the official Shelby registry. The cars will be stripped to bare metal before undergoing transformation. Customers can also opt for an original donor Shelby GT500 for the Super Snake transformation.
True to the original, Shelby will fit it with a race-inspired big-block 427 cubic-inch V8 from Carroll Shelby Engine Co., available in both aluminum and cast-iron blocks, only output shoots up to more than 550 horsepower. Power will be mated to a four-speed transmission, with disc brakes and the fastback’s original triple-stripe design. The muscle cars will be built to order and start at $ 249,995.
Series 2 roadster
Turning to the Series 2, Shelby dubs the convertible roadster a “clean sheet” car — all-Shelby and not based on an existing model or chassis — and successor to the 2,850-pound Series 1. It’s the result of an agreement between Shelby and Wingard Motorsports, which purchased the remaining Series 1 chassis and parts several years ago, to create a limited number of sports cars available in aluminum, carbon fiber or one of the first titanium car bodies.
“Working with Shelby, founder Bob Wingard revised the car to reduce weight by maximizing the integration of billeted aluminum and carbon fiber components,” Shelby American President Gary Patterson said in a release. “He further refined the suspension, braking and drivetrain to allow an increase of more than twice the horsepower of the original car. The Series 2 is now more than 12 percent lighter and will support over 800 horsepower.”
Yowza. The standard drivetrain is a five-speed ZF transaxle torque tube coupled to a multi-disc clutch system powered by either a Shelby 427 FE V8 or 427 Windsor motor, although other engines can be accommodated.
The car is built on the original aluminum honeycomb monocoque frames and uses an inboard cantilevered front and rear suspension design to minimize the sprung wheel weight, plus suspension fine-tuning courtesy of Penske Shocks. Braking comes from six-piston calipers on each corner and custom 19-inch monoblock performance wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires. No cupholders, however.
Each commissioned Series 2 will be unique and one-of-one, with custom interiors, carbon fiber seats and aluminum bodies available in brushed, polished or painted finish with Shelby racing stripes. They’ll come with a one-year warranty for parts and labor and painted finishes. Just four will be available per year, though pricing wasn’t disclosed. If you order one, Shelby says it will offer a weekend training session at Spring Mountain Raceway near Las Vegas to bring you up to speed.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 strip show continues, and the American automaker has given us our best look yet at the face of the forthcoming Mustang model.
–
Fitted with flared front fenders and a big Audi-like grille, the GT500 will include a robust front splitter and large lower vents that extend past the headlights and merge with the fenders. Unlike the 2018 Ford Mustang, the GT500 appears to carry on with the angrier-looking headlight shapes of the 2015–2017 Mustang.
–
While Ford is keeping mum on key details, we expect the mightiest Mustang to sport a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine under its hood. Code-named Predator, the new powerplant is expected to share its block with the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-8 “Voodoo” engine found in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. Alas, the Voodoo’s flat-plane crankshaft is expected to be left on the cutting-room floor, and the forced-induction GT500 likely will use a less rev-happy conventional crankshaft design.
It’s a small price to pay, though, as the GT500 will pack more than 700 horsepower when it goes on sale in 2019. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 have been put on notice by Ford, and we can now confirm that the 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will wear a mug as mean as the big supercharged bent-eight that is sure to power it.

Just last week, Fordgave us a brief teaser of the 700-plus-horsepower Shelby GT500, the big bad Hellcat-eating sibling of the GT350. There’s been no official word about when we might see the car, but Mustang 6G.com earlier reported that the GT500 will make its debut next month at the Chicago Auto Show. That link has since been pulled down, but the forum has been been fairly accurate in the past. Unless Ford — like Dodge with the Demon — has several months worth of teasers planned out, Chicago seems like a good bet to us, too.
We don’t really know more than we did last week, but watching the teaser above will give us a few good clues. The car will be powered by a supercharged version of the 5.2-liter V8 that’s under the hood of the GT350. In that guise, the engine makes 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. It also uses a flat-plane crank, helping the engine reach a sky-high 8,200 rpm redline.
The video shows a more aggressive aero package, but it’s difficult to tell what’s just part of the 2018 model-year refresh. There’s a larger rear wing and outlet vents on the hood. Carbon-fiber wheels are almost a given, but don’t rule out the possibility of carbon-fiber body panels. Stay tuned in the coming weeks. Press days for the 2018 Chicago Auto Show start on Thursday, February 8.

Ford has fired new warning shots in the ever escalating muscle-car power wars by confirming that the Mustang’s upcoming Shelby GT500 variant will be the most powerful Ford production car ever, boasting upward of 700 horsepower. We won’t see this hi-po Stang until 2019, but this confirmation is accompanied by a brief teaser video that shows some glimpses of the supercharged GT500 that certainly whet our appetite for what’s to come. (The image above is an illustrator’s guess at what it’ll look like.)

Rumors about the latest GT500 have swirled ever since the S550 sixth-generation Mustang’s debut way back in 2013, and most of them have started to converge on speculation that a 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 will be under the hood. This potent powerplant may be code-named Predator and seems to share its block with the 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 installed in the current Shelby GT350. It isn’t likely to be the same rev-happy monster we love in that car because of its more conventional crankshaft design, but a Roots-type supercharger should make up for that deficiency.
As a foil to the track-ready GT350, expect the GT500 to focus more on straight-ahead drag-strip performance, bonkers acceleration, and an impressive top speed. It’ll certainly have its work cut out for it competing against the 650-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Dodge’s hottest Challenger variants, including the 707-hp SRT Hellcat and the totally insane 840-hp Demon. We can’t wait for these battles to fully heat up once the GT500 is finally let loose, probably a year from now at the 2019 Detroit auto show next January.

Today, we got pretty excited about the Ford Mustang Bullitt. We honestly weren’t expecting it. In recent weeks some of us around the Autoblog office postulated — hoped, in fact — that Ford would surprise us with a new Shelby GT500 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Bullitt was more than enough excitement, though, we had decided.
After day one of NAIAS 2018 closed, our passenger pigeons surprised us with this new video from Ford, teasing the GT500 some of us had hoped to see. Take a look for yourself in the video above, but keep in mind these words from Ford, literally the title of the (brief) accompanying press release: “Most Powerful Street-Legal Production Ford Ever: All New Mustang Shelby GT500 To Attack Tracks, Drag Strips In 2019.”
It sounds like Dodge’s SRT division has been put on notice.
Scant more details from Ford:
– Arriving in 2019, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 will be the pinnacle of Mustang performance and highlights the innovation, ingenuity and passion of Ford Performance
– With more than 700 horsepower projected, the all-new Shelby GT500 fast-back coupe will be twice as powerful as the original 1967 Mustang performance model
Loaded with the most venom ever, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 with its 700-plus horsepower supercharged V8 will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever.
Embodying Ford Performance team’s motorsport expertise, this new Mustang is engineered to stand apart on roadways and race tracks, thanks to its new innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling.
Consider our interest piqued. We’ll be back with more details as soon as they’re available. In the meantime, we’re lacing up our driving shoes and practicing our water box burnouts.

Seems like there’s an intriguing leak per day over at the Mustang6G forum, which on Monday had posted a photo that seemed to pretty much cinch the existence of a 2018 Bullitt Mustang. Now, the forum has posted what it says are Ford documents and pictures that seem to confirm a supercharged 5.2-liter engine is headed for the 2019 GT500 — no mere Coyote, but the one they call the “Predator.”
Forum member Super Werty posted the first images of this engine, showing the supercharger nestled below the intercooler of the intake manifold.
A document titled “2020 MY North America Vehicle Program – Engine Oil Requirements” has a footnote that indicates the next GT500 engine gets the Eaton-supercharged cross plane version of Ford’s 5.2L engine. We know this because the chart says it will require 5W50 oil.
The GT500 could have output in Dodge Demon territory, with potentially over 800 horsepower, and may have a dual clutch transmission derived from the Ford GT’s seven-speed.

We found one going for as much as $ 275,000. But lo and behold, here’s a brand-new ’67 Shelby GT500 that looks as good as the original but features many modern components. It’ll set you back at least $ 219,000.
It’s the product of the folks at Revology Cars in Orlando, Fla. They’ve started with a new, Ford-licensed steel body atop Revology’s own rear-wheel-drive “M58” platform and used plenty of authentic parts, including Shelby and GT500 badges, upper and lower side scoops and Shelby sport bucket seats. From there, they’ve added many contemporary components. The hood is fiberglass, for starters, while the headlights, park and reverse lamps, interior and instrument gauges all get LED lights.
They’ve also installed an all-aluminum Ford/Roush Performance 5.0-liter supercharged and intercooled V8 rated at 600 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, just for fun.
Other modern standard features include a three-link rear suspension, limited-slip differential, electronic parking brake and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, you get brushed aluminum trim, power windows, a leatherette-covered dash, Shelby wood rim steering wheel with a GT500 horn button, and remote keyless entry. So it’s clearly not your father’s GT500.
The $ 219,000 starting price is for the six-speed close ratio manual transmission. A six-speed automatic costs $ 222,840 before you start adding options, which include a 7-inch touchscreen display with Bluetooth, rear camera and either Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Also available are Alcantara headliner and sun visors, a power amp and subwoofer, and Sirius XM radio.
“Most original cars are rarely driven,” says Tom Scarpello, Revology’s president and founder. “The Revology is designed to be driven anywhere, anytime. It really depends on your priorities. If you love to drive, our car is for you.”
