Google Maps Street View has captured a horrifying image taken near the Hollywood sign in California, USA. The disturbing photo appears to show the head of a woman hanging from a pole flying the American flag. The seemingly decapitated head faces toward the ground with a ponytail hanging downwards. The black pole, with what looks like a shred of the white and red flag, appears to be skewered into the back of her neck.

To add to the unnerving nature of the scene, the tourists around the spectacle are acting like it is nothing out of the ordinary.

But is there more than meets the eye to this very strange and spine-tingling sight?

If the viewer looks closely, one can notice the bit of clothing left on the severed head is a camouflage material.

To the right of the pole is a woman – fully intact – also wearing a camouflage-patterned top.

Consequently, it would seem the head, in fact, belong to this woman rather than being a decapitated body part.

Clearly, something has gone wrong with the Google cameras, to cause a serious technological glitch.

The photography splicing has caused the problem due to the way the images form.

When taking the photo, the 360-degree cameras shoot multiple pictures to create the seamless image.

However, moving objects often ruin the scene as they shift when the photos are taken.

It is most likely the woman moved and bent down to the ground when the images were taken, resulting in the strange photo.

This is far from the first an alarming technological error has raised alarm among viewers.

For instance, a road in New Mexico, USA seems to be nothing like a normal road.

More like Edvard Munch’s The Scream painting than a real location, Highway 285, near Albuquerque, is an array of blurred colours. 

Google Maps shows the road to be a green-grey colour while all around it is a mass of purple and pinks.

What’s more, the road appears to lead absolutely nowhere making it look even more supernatural.

New Mexico is particularly famous for being home to Roswell, known for UFO sightings and the paranormal.

However, there is likely a more rational explanation for the bizarre distorted image.

Realistically it is probably a glitch, which often happens on Google Maps. The cameras can sometimes make a mistake when splicing the images together and create some tricky optical illusions.

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway were both stabbed to death and one was beheaded on camera. Footage of the appalling attack has been posted to one of their mother’s Facebook.

Friends and family have urged people not to view the video which has been shared across social media. The women’s bodies were discovered by a group of French hikers on Monday and flown to Copenhagen Friday.

“It was horrible. They were broken,” one of the French hikers said. “We warned everyone we saw in Imlil not to go up there. I did not want more to see what we had seen…It was a big shock, we’re thinking about it all day. It makes you think about what’s important in life.”

Ueland’s mother’s Facebook page has been spammed with hundreds of images depicting her daughter’s slit throat and Jespersen’s severed head.

However, the vast majority of comments expressed condolences, many of which are from people claiming to be Moroccans and decrying the attacks.

Video of the suspects pledging allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has been authenticated by investigators, adding further evidence that this was indeed an act of terrorism.

“The video showing the arrested individuals … pledging allegiance to Daesh was recorded last week before the execution of the criminal acts we are investigating,” the prosecutor in Rabat said.

So far, Moroccan police have arrested four suspects in connection with the case.

Three of them were arrested as they were boarding a bus from Marrakech to Agadir and were found with three long machete-like knives, a shorter blade and a slingshot. Surveillance footage shows the suspects setting up a tent a few hundred yards from the women. Morocco’s general prosecutor said one of the suspects is a member of a militant group but declined to give any name.

“[This is] revenge for our brothers in Hajin,” one of the suspects says in French in the video, referring to the last IS stronghold in Syria which fell recently.

Ueland’s mother told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that before setting off on the month-long holiday, her daughter’s “first priority was safety. The girls had taken all the precautionary measures before embarking on this trip.”

Jespersen’s ex-boyfriend made a heartfelt plea for calm and peace as the women’s family and friends continue to grieve.

In a statement on the killings, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was filled with “anger and disgust” at “these barbaric and bestial actions,” adding that “Much indicates that the killing can be politically motivated and thus a terrorist act.”  

“It shows that there are still dark forces, their violence will fight us and the way we live. It makes me angry but also stubborn that we can never give in and give up.”

San Jose, California, police charged 90-year-old Anthony (Tony) Vincent Aiello in the gruesome death of his 67-year-old stepdaughter after obtaining dramatic health data recorded by her Fitbit Alta HR device.

The stepdaughter, Karen Navarra, was found dead in her house on Thursday, September 13, from multiple deep and instantly incapacitating skull wounds likely inflicted using a small hatchet or axe, according to a police report and autopsy. Her Fitbit data indicated the exact moments those wounds occurred, with her heart rate dramatically spiking then crashing to nothing. The timing of that plummet led to Aiello’s arrest.

A co-worker made the initial discovery of Navarra’s murder while checking in on her after she didn’t show up for her job as a pharmacy technician at the Regional Medical Center, where she had worked for 45 years. Police arriving on the scene reported that they found Navarra slouched in a chair at her dining room table, covered in blood and surrounded by blood-splattered surfaces and curtains.

Footballer Wayne Rooney experienced the dizzying highs and lows of his MLS career in equal measure when he scored his first goal for DC United but then suffered a sickening broken nose defending a corner.

Former Manchester United and England ace Rooney, 32, captained the side to a 2-1 win over Colorado Rapids on Sunday, smashing past former teammate Tim Howard in the Rapids goal on 33 minutes to score the game’s first goal at Audi Field in their Major League Soccer (MLS) meeting.

The strike was his first since making the switch Stateside from boyhood club Everton last month and saw DC go into the break ahead. But a bigger, more toe-curling break lay ahead however, when he was called back to defend a corner in second half stoppage time, colliding with 6ft 7in Colorado colossus Axel Sjoberg, the impact shattering Rooney’s nose and causing a gruesome gash over his left eye, leaving the striker with blood streaming down his face.

The wounds formed a mask of blood on Rooney’s face. Receiving treatment on the touchline which featured a head strap, he was seen to recoil when medical staff appeared to squeeze his nose too tight. However, the hard man made light of the incident on his social media accounts, hinting he accepted the incident as part and parcel of the game.

“Big night at Audi Field,“ he wrote. “3 points. First game as captain. First goal. Broken nose. 5 stitches. Can’t wait for next game.” Rooney also posted cheeky tweets that played down his injuries.

During the rest of the match, and deep into the 2nd half, Kellyn Acosta equalized for the Rapids, before a 90th minute own goal from Niki Jackson dramatically gave the Washington side all three points.

Rooney’s bravery gained respect plaudits from his coach Ben Olsen. “I don’t think it’s the first time he has bled. He is a pretty tough guy,” Olsen said, The Washington Post reported. “It shows you what this means to him right now. He’s in the box, putting his face on the line, understanding that’s a big moment.”

DC United currently sit bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference MLS table after the result. Colorado also sit 11th in the Western Conference, one spot of bottom place.

Gerry (played by Shaun) found himself at the mercy of Lachlan (Thomas Atkinson) earlier this evening on Emmerdale. 

An accident at the B&B left him unable to move as he was trapped under a heavy beam. 

And what’s more, once Lachlan had escaped his own pile of rubble, Gerry only had the villain to help him. 

With Lachlan wanting to get rid of him months ago, it seemed there was no way Gerry was getting out of the collapsed building alive. 

The heart wrenching scenes saw Gerry beg for his life as he cried about how much pain he was in. 

But Lachlan showed no sign of remorse as he finished off Gerry by dropping a big stone on his head, killing him. 

In light of his character’s brutal death, Shaun has opened up on the scenes, describing them as “upsetting”. 

“Well it was a shock, because I was only ever meant to come here for the two episodes in the prison with Lachlan and then I ended up staying here for a year and a half. 

“So I really got used to being around everybody, made a connection with everybody, and then to be told that was going to come to an end, it was pretty upsetting.”

What’s more, the intricate death scene took a long time to film, according to Shaun. 

The moment also featured many comedic moments – all which upset viewers even more. 

The 20-year-old actor said: “I think that’s just typical of Gerry, isn’t it?

“Whatever situation he’s in, he always finds a way to make someone laugh or make someone smile. 

“Lying on that floor for three days was quite uncomfortable so that alone was a challenge in itself.

“But working with Tom and the director and the guys we were working with were all brilliant and they made it so comfortable and a lot easier for me to do my own thing.”

Meanwhile, viewers were completely devastated at their loss as they flocked to Twitter to pour out their grief.

One said: “WHY DID GERRY HAVE TO DIE?”

Another added: “He sure is Gerry didn’t deserve any of that ? Will Lachlan ever get his commupance!!”

A third cried: “Aww c**p, they actually killed off Gerry.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow on ITV at 7pm.
