Under the terms of the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox properties, the broadcast network Fox and various cable networks are not included. FX, however, is part of the Disney sale. Speaking with the Television Critics Association today, FX CEO John Landgraf said he expects FX to have a place in Disney, particularly feeding the streaming service Disney announced prior to the Fox deal.
“Without knowing anything other than I had a lovely conversation with Mr. Iger, he was extremely kind,” Landgraf said. “He seems to have really wanted FX to be a part of the larger plans and feels like we do something that’s unique. In some ways, that FX and Disney’s brand are so different from each other is a good thing. It means that also what it is that we do and the entities we have doesn’t exist already inside that company, meaning we bring something distinctive and unique into their world.”
Landgraf referenced some of Disney CEO Bob Iger’s comments about the changing landscape of entertainment.
“I think if you look at the larger context of streaming, obviously one of the things Iger has said is that one of the reasons they’re getting bigger is they want to be able to compete against global streaming services like Netflix and Amazon,” Landgraf said. “When you think about the amount of money subscription services like HBO, Netflix and Amazon have made in adult scripted programming, you can see with clarity at least they believe that’s a really good thing to invest in. That’s an important component of what drives consumer interest into a streaming service. We end up becoming the adult scripted component of their larger plans.”
Keeping in mind the deal could take up to 18 months to be approved, Landgraf also qualifies his own early predictions.
“Only time will tell exactly how that plays out, but I think it could be a very good thing,” Landgraf said. “The streaming services are putting a huge amount of pressure on the business model because Netflix is a money losing entity. It reports a profit but it’s free cash flow is just a measure of the amount of money it takes in in a given year versus the amount of money it spends in a given year, is negative more than 2 billion. It’s losing money but gaining market share and market value. That puts enormous pressure on the business enterprise. I understand why in that context, why Hollywood companies feel the need to bulk up. All I can say is I’m optimistic and time will tell.”
FX also represents a comparatively low maintenance entity for Disney to support. There will reportedly be layoffs when some Fox positions are eliminated, but FX ought not to represent a strain on Disney resources.
“I don’t think they’ve given any indication,” Landgraf said. “They have a vast enterprise to organize here and exactly how they’re going to organize it I don’t know. I can tell you this, the way we’re able to do what we do, we’re a very lean organization. Not a lot of people, 270 people. Compare that to the number of people employed by HBO or Showtime or Turner or USA, it’s a very small, tight organization. It’s a very efficient organization. It has a very distinctive culture. We can’t do what we do if we’re not allowed to maintain our culture. I think if the company’s going to spend eight, nine, 10 billion dollars to acquire us, they’re going to want the best of what we have to offer. How we work that out, what their point of view is, I don’t know. All I can tell you is I feel optimistic about our ability to continue to do what we do well.”
Until the deal closes, FX remains a Fox property and cannot, for legal reasons, interact too much with Disney execs.
“Disney management and shareholders do not control the Fox entity until they control it,” Landgraf said. “For all intents and purposes I still report to the board of directors, to Peter Rice and the Murdochs at Fox and will continue to. There are pretty specific rules about how we can and cannot communicate given the fact that they don’t own the company. We have to operate within a set of fairly stringent rules as long as the regulatory process is pending.”
Disney has a history of acquiring other entities and keeping them running. Landgraf compares FX to Pixar.
“I don’t really have any concerns other than the details, which I don’t know and won’t know,” Landgraf said. “I don’t think there’s any organization creatively for which I have more respect than Pixar. I just think their track record speaks for itself. I know from reading about Pixar they have a distinctive process and distinctive creative culture that emerged over time. It’s creatively driven and story first process. Ours is different. Ours has to do with specifically the way we relate to and empower creative people who work with us. I have every optimism that Disney as a potential new parent will understand and support that. They want what we have which is extraordinary television and extraordinary critical acclaim and Emmys, all those things that help round out a streaming service. I’m happy to be going to a place that doesn’t have the particular emphasis and expertise we have.”

Once a celebration of schooling and foray into tertiary studies, the tides of gap year are finally changing.
Many Britons aged over 45 years old are now taking their own ’grown-up gap year’, according to a new study.
The research, revealed by online money transfer company Azimo, found almost half of the age demographic had already done so.
A further 37 per cent dream of taking one in the future, promoting the pursuit of travel dreams at any age.
The research surveyed 1,000 adults in the UK, finding 94 per cent of them would take a gap year without their children in order to appreciate it more.
More than half (51 per cent) said greater financial stability had made the timing better for them than when they were younger.
Almost half (46 per cent) cited less pressure to join the career ladder.
Unsurprisingly the destinations most favoured for a grown-up gap year differed from those of a traditionally younger one.
Instead of youth hotspots like Southeast Asia and South America, over-45s are opting for European culture and stunning scenery in the transatlantic.
The top five destinations according to the study were Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and Italy.
Conversely the five most avoided locations were Brazil, Cuba, Philippines, Singapore and Colombia.
It’s not just over-45s opting for grown-up gap years – 40 per cent of 35-44-year-olds dream of taking 12 months off to explore another corner of the world.
Azimo co-founder and CEO Michael Kent said: “When it comes to travel, age is nothing but a number.
“It’s much more feasible now than ever before to travel for long periods of time, and we’re proud to support nomads of all ages by enabling them to access money quickly, easily and cheaply when they’re overseas.”
There’s no denying the appeal of extended time off, especially for Britons who on average want to take a break just 29 days after they return from a holiday.
Research has revealed office fatigue sets in less than four weeks after getting back from a break as the daily grind starts to affect work performance.
Mike Greenup of Holiday Inn Express, which commissioned the survey, said: “Everyone knows getting away can be restorative and help counterbalance our busy work lives.
“But it’s interesting to see just how often people feel they need to be having a break to remain happy, productive and stress-free.”
Chapter 2’s script is currently in development, with a release expected to follow in 2019.
Reflecting on the huge success of Chapter One, which took over $ 180 million worldwide in its opening weekend, director Andy Muschietti briefly discussed who could play one particular member of the Losers’ Club as an adult.
On the suggestion that Jessica Chastain looks like Beverly star Sophia Lillis, he told Variety: “I don’t know, does she?
“Jessi is an amazing actress and very good friend and I would love her to play Beverly.”
He added: “She loves the movie and it feels like the planets are aligned in that sense, but we still have to make that happen.
“There are a lot of ideas for the rest of the cast that I’m playing with, but it’s a bit too premature to say those names right now.”
Chastain certainly has the pedigree: she has two Oscar nominations to her name (The Help and Zero Dark Thirty) and a Golden Globe win (Zero Dark Thirty) in addition to three further nominations.
Bill Skarsgard plays Pennywise in the movies, and last week revealed what decision he made that made his performance even more sinister.
When asked by SlashFilm about his character mocking his child victims immediately before killing them, he said: “It wasn’t scripted. That was something that I really wanted to incorporate.
“With the character, it’s like, ‘What defines evil? Real, real evil, and monstrosity?’
“And having a crying child and then mocking that crying child is, to me, one of the most horrific things you can do.”
It is out now.
Radical Transport
Radical Transport had just gotten its first hoverboard prototype working in February 2016 when the nascent market faced a potentially game-ending crisis: some of the first hoverboards, made by other companies, had begun catching fire.
Nick Fragnito and Evan Williams, the founders of Radical Transport, weren’t overly concerned though. They knew their board, the Radical MOOV, would be going after a different market. And they had Mark Cuban’s wallet and strategy team behind them.
Cuban told Business Insider that he viewed the exploding hoverboards as an opportunity. The team he was backing was “confident they would be able to build a board that was better and far far safer,” he said in an emailed message.
Cuban said his role in the endeavor is limited to “writing checks” and providing strategic advice, while Fragnito and Williams focus on the engineering and marketing.
The company is currently testing prototypes and can’t say for sure when the MOOV will be available for purchase. But it’s clear that the MOOV is being positioned as a legitimate mode of transportation. With its $ 1,500 price tag, the MOOV will be in the same price range as serious transportation devices like an Urbe bike or moped.
“It is much more vehicle than it is a child’s toy,” said Fragnito.
One of the biggest changes is a solid state riding platform that differs from the traditional halved swivel design. The solid board allows for a steering system based on weight rather than foot position, which Fragnito said creates a sportier rider experience. The system can also be tailored to the rider’s skill level; users can choose between different rider profiles from novice to advanced in the company’s app. The board also has a handle – making it easier for daily riding, and colorful interchangeable deck boards for personalization.
Fragnito said that before the MOOV he wouldn’t have considered himself a hoverboard purchaser but sees his product as an “electric rideable.” He and Williams have started incorporating the boards into their daily lives and say the devices work as an easy tool for coffee stops and lunch breaks. “It really is a showstopper, it’s sleek and doesn’t look like a toy,” said Fragnito.
Cuban recruited Fragnito and Williams in August of 2015 with the intent of buying the original hoverboard patent from Shane Chen and having the duo be his engineering team. Shortly after purchasing the license to pursue the patent, Cuban dropped the idea and announced he’d make his own board. Fragnito and Williams had previously taken a trip to China to observe Chen’s factory, and already knew they’d need to completely redesign the traditional hoverboard process to make the product safe and the business scalable.
The board is sourced and manufactured in Dallas, Texas and aims to become one of a half dozen companies compliant with the UL ‘s hoverboard safety standard. The Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a statement in February of 2016 that banned retail outlets from selling boards that don’t comply with the UL’s standard.
The safety, innovative engineering and made-in-the-USA pedigree will help set the MOOV apart, the team believes. And if the MOOV’s kickstarter campaign is any indicator, consumers may be eager to hop on board: the project was fully funded within two days.

“When I watched this as a teenager, I related to Max more than Goofy. When I watched it as a soon-to-be parent, the scene where Goofy sadly starts the car to drive away from Lester’s Possum Park just about killed me. He was just trying to show you something from his past, Max.” —Rhonda Blair Emerson
“I’m a teacher so for me it’s The Iron Giant. I recently finished the topic with my kids and they pointed out how it relates to the current issue of migrants and refugees. It’s a beautiful story of how we should accept the difference in others and how it can help our community.” —j4a5984efd
“I used to take the ‘Be yourself!’ messages in kids movies for granted. But as an adult I have even more respect for Mulan adhering to her values despite everyone telling her to do otherwise and fall in line. I didn’t cry during Mulan at all as a child. Now, admittedly I tear up when the city bows down to Mulan, realizing it was her willingness to be different that saved them. It’s hard to stand up to your family or your country and speak your mind. Mulan did that and more.” —Kathleen Hong
“Shark Tale! It discreetly addresses important issues that wouldn’t make sense to me as a child. Like the fact that Lenny disguises himself as a dolphin to escape the wrath of his father and deals with being a vegetarian shark.” —laurenmarissam
“I didn’t really get it when I was a kid, but when I got older it really resonated with me how true the mother/daughter storyline was. I think all teenage girls go through something like that with their moms. To this day, Merida is by far my favorite princess.” —addiethedino
“FernGully: The Last Rainforest. It’s beautifully animated, touches on the themes of pollution and deforestation, and has memorable characters. It was one of my favorites as a child and is still one of my favorites as an adult.” —r46143bf89
“After I have dealt with the stresses of the present being overtaken by the glories of the past, I can really appreciate Mr. Incredible’s struggle more than when I was younger.” — alexanderandtheverybademail
“As an adult, I love the theme of ohana (which not only means ‘family’ but an extended family of choice), which starts between Nani and Lilo and their ‘dog’ Stitch, but eventually extends to Cobra Bubbles, Jumba, and Pleakly. Added bonus: Jumba and Pleakley are the least offensive and most fun coded queer characters in Disney history. Plus, the soundtrack rocks and the simple watercolor backgrounds are beautiful.” —C Paul Keller, Facebook
“It’s a movie about a villain who isn’t truly evil, but is rather a product of his upbringing. And that even bad guys can be good given the chance.” —katw46e15b743
“This movie is a goddamned masterpiece. It is visually STUNNING. Go watch the big opening scene and tell me you didn’t get goosebumps. As a kid I never really wanted to watch it, it made me uncomfortable. But now, as an agnostic adult who loves movies and knows how to separate religion from art, I am now able to fully acknowledge the majesty of this movie. It is a masterpiece.” —Gia Reneé Williams, Facebook
“Meet the Robinsons has become my favorite animated movie as I’ve gotten older. The whole theme of the movie is to ‘keep moving forward.’ Just because you fail at something the first time (or first few times) doesn’t mean you should quit trying. Keep your head up and keep trying and you will get better. I also love the theme of accepting and loving people for who they are.” —meemoo
“I always dug The Secret of NIMH when I was a kid because it was animated and there were animals in it and it was kinda spooky. Now I’m like, how many kids movies are centered around a grieving single mom just trying to get by? When she loses Timmy’s medicine and she just starts crying, I start crying. And I don’t even have kids. Also, Auntie Shrew is my new favorite character because she doesn’t care if you like her, she’s still putting her ass on the line for her community.” —Marguerite Jacobs, Facebook
“Inside Out started a discussion about emotions and how everyone’s emotions might be different. I hate the idea that ‘happiness is a choice.’ That idea teaches that happiness or joy is the most important and ‘good’ emotion to have, while other emotions are ‘bad’ and unimportant. Inside Out shows us that all our emotions are equally as important.” —Holli D Kellogg, Facebook
“My Neighbor Totoro deals with some heavier subject matter in a way that feels light, but doesn’t belittle it. I also love that the children actually behave like real children — they are weird, loud, mysterious, and capable of amazing sweetness at times.” —Claire Elyce Wiedman, Facebook
“In my opinion Brother Bear is the most underrated Disney movie. When I was younger I was mostly entertained by the talking animals and wonderful Phil Collins songs. Now that I’m older I really appreciate the message that love is so much more important than hate and that we should put ourselves in each other’s shoes before making judgments.” —kfoley18
“The animation style of Studio Ghibli is beautiful, and it shows what happens when people try to intervene with nature. I also don’t know how it didn’t scar me as a kid, because some of the scenes are downright terrifying, but I guess my younger self just didn’t comprehend what was happening in those scenes.” —lexis4bca61e1d
“I wasn’t a huge fan as a kid, but now it’s my favorite Disney movie because of its music, animation, and the undertones of minorities rising up against their oppressors. Being a gay man, I watched this movie again and instantly loved Esmeralda’s character more than before and saw myself in her, especially during ‘God Help the Outcasts.’” —Anthony Helfrich, Facebook
Note: Submissions have been edited for length/clarity.
Frankly, and it could just be the jarring incongruity from this franchise’s earlier installments — six X-Men movies plus the aforementioned Wolverine stand-alones — but the first quarter or so of Logan has the feel of a fourth-grader proudly throwing around the swears he just learned. Yes, Logan is a hard-R vehicle for a customarily PG-13 character, though his signature skill (dispatching people with his giant claws) did require some creative/selective framing and editing.

But it’s not just a question of surface, checklist elements; the overall tone and feel of this film is darker, grimmer, and more adult-oriented. We find this older Logan — and his former mentor Dr. Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who has fallen even farther — living in a world where no new mutants have been born in 25 years. It’s a pretty grim country, complete with lunk-heads chanting “USA!” at a border fence, dystopian future, hahaha. But Logan is made aware of a breed of mutant children, being raised in a lab in Mexico city as soldiers and killers — including one, Laura (Dafne Keen), who is quite literally a junior version of himself. And she is fucking fierce.
Like the similarly structured and styled Children of Men, Logan is essentially a road movie, tracking our hero’s attempt to get this girl to safety, and perhaps shed some of his own cynicism along the way. It offers Jackman more meat than he’s ever had in this role (which he’s playing for the ninth time in 18 years), and he digs into it, carrying around a chip on his shoulder and a beard that he apparently borrowed from Mel Gibson. Even so, Logan can’t quite earn the heavy emotions they’re going for at the end, and there are other problems along the way: villain Boyd Holbrook is pretty intolerable (and not in the intended way), some of the plot mechanics are just plain lazy, and while the leisurely pace is admirable, the film certainly drags in spots.

But there’s much to admire here, both in concept and execution. Logan reunites Jackman with The Wolverine director James Mangold (Copland, 3:10 to Yuma) and co-writer Scott Frank (Out of Sight, The Lookout); it feels, in spots, like the movie they spent their lunch hours wishing they were making, rather than that one. And who knows, maybe it took screwing up (twice, after Gavin Hood’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine) for them to get the go-ahead from Marvel and Fox to take this riskier, more adult-oriented approach. (Or, more likely, it took the success of last spring’s R-rated, lower-budgeted, high-grossing spin-off film Deadpool.)
Either way, the idea of sifting the conventional comic book hero through this lean, mean Wick/Reacher man-of-action template is a good one – so good, in fact, that it’s easy to overpraise the mere notion, and there’s a high risk of appreciating what Logan is attempting more than appraising what it actually achieves. But credit where it’s due: this is a grown-up movie that’s a drama first and superhero story second, and while maybe you shouldn’t give points for effort, maybe you should when you’re talking about a subset of films as ruthlessly locked-in to their formulas as these. Films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and Deadpool get credit for just the slightest variations of tone and style while still adhering to the playbook of the form; Logan throws most of that out, and good on ‘em for that. “A man has to be what he is,” Logan is told. “You can’t break the mold.” Maybe. Maybe not.
Logan is out Friday.

Daveigh Chase played Samara Morgan in that smash hit, and indeed its follow-up The Ring Two in 2005.
She’ll also be seen in flashback only in the new movie, though not in new footage.
So what does she look like now?
Not quite like she did fifteen years ago, to put it mildly.
Daveigh, now 26, has continued to act – and even voiced Lilo Pelekai in 2002’s Lilo and Stitch and 2003’s Stitch! The Movie.
On TV, she’s had a host of roles; including Without A Trace (2008), Cold Case (2004), CIS (2004) and Lilo and Stitch: The Series (2003-2006).
She also had a recurring role in Big Love as Rhonda Volmer, appearing in a total of 32 episodes.
Her Twitter and Instagram feeds have been rarely used, but she did cause a minor upset in 2014 when she deployed the N-word on both networks.
Captioning a photo of her cat, she said: “missin my pretty kitty cos a n***a would.”
One person replied: “Stop using the word and get a damn education.” She hit back: “aw im just kidding around dont gotta be bitter.”
Rings is out in cinemas this Friday, February 3.
SCHOOL OF ROCK is now an unbelievable 14 years old – and its multi-talented young cast are all grown up.
