A growing number of Capitol rioters facing federal prosecution have been charged for other unrelated crimes — from domestic violence to gun and drug charges — according to a review of DOJ records published by CBS News.
In one instance, federal authorities said a Navy reservist went into "panic mode" after the Capitol riot and made $ 50,000 in firearms-related purchases, The Washington Post reported. Hatchet Speed, who was charged June in connection to the riot, was also indicted by a Virginia grand jury on three counts of unlawful possession of a silencer, per CBS News.
Kene Lazo, another Capitol rioter, was arrested by federal authorities in May 2021 for being part of the insurrection but was arrested again three months later in Virginia on domestic violence charges, CBS News reported.
Prosecutors used Lazo's domestic violence charge to get him a prison sentence, CBS News reported. In another case, police discovered guns and controlled substances when they searched Elias Costianes' Maryland home in connection to the riot, leading to further charges, the outlet reported.
Insider has reported that so far, 910 have faced charges in connection to the January 6 insurrection.
Michael Greenberger, a law professor at the University of Maryland told CBS News that the politicization of the prosecution of January 6 defendants could potentially increase their likelihood of ending up back in prison.
Additionally, these additional charges could make it harder for the defendants to get lenient sentences in their Capitol riot charges and could mean that other defendants could struggle to secure pretrial releases.
Greenberger told CBS News that Trump's rhetoric "leaves these bad actors with little doubt that they will ultimately be forgiven—if not lionized."
He continued, "Reality, however, is likely to settle upon those guys when they are ultimately sentenced or re-sentenced to many years in jail."
Former President Donald Trump and his allies have praised the rioters. Trump has previously said he's "financially supporting" the rioters and would "very seriously" consider pardons for those arrested in connection with the riot if he's re-elected in 2024.
"It's a disgrace what they've done to them," Trump said earlier this month.

It’s been another sexy, albeit, blunder-filled season of Sex Education and the final episode is no different. As we close out the pint-sized sophomore string, lets dive into the deets by character as we inch closer to that cliffhanger and a (fingers crossed!) potential third season.
Ola and Lily | Now that Ola has figured out her pansexuality, she and Lily are together, but not without problems of their own. The girls work through Lily’s vaginismus issues and ultimately seem happy to have and explore each other, despite Lily’s early unrequited feelings following their first kiss. Clearly, this series was never going to be the Otis and Ola Show, but it’s nice to see a new side of Ola and another sector of sexuality explored.
Adam | Adam continues trying to find his place in the world, asking his dad if he can return to school only to be rejected by a man who can’t be bothered by his own son. Adam also tries to get his job back at the convenience store. When Ola goes to bat for him by telling their boss that she forgot to report a broken key, they’re both shown the door. Ola doesn’t seem to mind; Adam is her friend and she loves him. “No one’s ever said I was their friend before,” he says as he scoops her up and holds her tight. I’ve been working overtime trying to dislike Adam, but it’s hard not to feel for the kid.
Eric, Rahim… and Adam! | As with Ola and Otis, it seems Eric and Rahim weren’t built to last either. It only takes one tall and lanky ex-military-school student to come between their physical attraction (Adam…I’m talking about Adam). Before the play, Eric apologies for what he said to Adam at the party and Adam replies, “I understand I hurt you. I just wanted you to know that.” The look on Eric’s face says it all. Then, Adam jumps on stage and very publicly asks Eric to hold his hand. Welp, it was nice knowing ya, Rahim! Our boy has chosen.
Jackson and Viv | …make up after Viv intervened by telling his moms about his self harm. The friendship between these two has been heartwarming; they were two unlikely buds from separate parts of the school, and their embrace at the end gives me all kinds of feels. As shown with Ola and Adam, platonic love is just as important as sexual.
Maeve and Mom | We all knew this hammer was going to drop eventually. It really seemed like Erin was going to get on the straight-and-narrow, but it takes just one relapse for Maeve to report her mom for child endangerment. Maeve is such a compelling character; her hard exterior is fortified by years of neglect and abandonment. Emma Mackey plays these scenes beautifully with her heavy eyes and subtly-quivering lips. Her mom’s breakdown when authorities arrive is brutal. Erin feels betrayed, but considering Maeve’s past, can we blame her?
All Things Jean | I’m ecstatic to see Gillian Anderson take more of a spotlight this year, and Jean certainly underwent her own drama. Sure, she and Jakob broke up, but it was Jean’s fractured relationship with Otis that made the most waves. Otis accuses Jean of rejecting Jakob and him, but she fires back. “As the primary carer, I always get your worst and I’m tired of it,” she tells her son. “It’s not my fault Dad left,” he woefully replies. Later, when the headmaster tries to vilify Jean during the school play, Otis fights back. “My mom is an excellent therapist and she cares about people. She only wants what’s best for them. Which is why she’s also such an amazing parent.” Mom and Otis plan to patch things up further, while Otis says he’s “cool with it” if she wants to reconnect with Jakob. Good thing, because she’s pregnant with Jakob’s child!
“Maevis,” on Hold | Otis heads to Meave’s to spill his heart after a season full of missed connections, but she’s not home. He tells her new friend Isaac to have her check her messages. In a voicemail, he tells her how proud of her he is and how stupid he’s been. “I was so caught up in trying to do the right thing, I lost track of what that actually is… It’s always been you. I love you, Maeve.” And with that, Isaac hits “Delete” and immediately crushes Sex Education fans worldwide. “Maevis” will have to wait until Season 3.
Bonus Bits:
* This advice from Adam’s mom: “You have to let the people you love know that you love them even if it causes you a great deal of pain.” When he asks why, she responds, “Because you’re alive.” We can all learn a thing or two from Maureen.
* Eric tells Rahim, “People that hate musicals have no soul!” Agree or disagree?
* Aimee’s sexual assault was a tough story to watch, but an important one to tell. The scene with her friends surprising her at the bus stop was a touching end to her painful experience (“It’s just a stupid bus.”). Everyone deserves friends that supportive.
* Drunk Otis!

Citing personal reasons for the resignation, Sylvain Fort said on Thursday that he would leave the job at the end of January, telling France Info radio station that he had informed the president of the decision several weeks ago.
“After two years and a half of relentless work serving the candidate and later our president, I wish to pursue other professional and personal projects, and above all dedicate more time to my family,” he told AFP in a statement.
His resignation follows that of former Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, who left his post in October, following a dip in relations with the president.
Europe 1 radio have also reported that Macron’s strategy chief, Ismael Emelien, is also seeking to resign. However, this has yet to be confirmed by the presidential palace.
During his stint as spin doctor, Fort played an integral role in shaping Macon’s political messaging during a grueling presidential election campaign that saw the political novice pip right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen to the Elysee Palace.
Following the election, Fort took a step back from the political limelight, instead settling into the role of Macron’s chief speech writer. However, he returned to a front-line role in the summer following the Benalla Affair – a scandal and attempted cover-up involving Macron’s former bodyguard beating May Day protesters.
Since then, other incidents that have soured public opinion of the president include him posing with middle-finger waving gangsters in Saint Martin, and reports of a lavish lifestyle have led to accusations that he is out of touch and that he had ambitions of being a ‘Jupiterian’ leader.
However, the biggest challenge facing Macron, who entered 2019 with a record-low approval rating, is that of the Yellow Vest movement. Initially angered at proposed fuel price hikes, the movement has now widened its focus to include tackling Macron’s pro-business agenda, which they say favors the rich.
But a defiant Macron used his New Year’s message to reaffirm his commitment to his reform agenda, saying: “We can’t work less, earn more, cut taxes and increase spending.”

It only took Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg a few hours to publicly criticize President Donald Trump’s January 2017 executive order banning the U.S. entry of travelers from certain Muslim-dominated nations. His response — soon echoed by several other Silicon Valley CEOs — was in keeping with the traditionally liberal principles promoted by American tech companies: pro-immigration, pro-freedom of expression and supportive of rights for the LGBTQ community and women. Look beyond the U.S., though, and their stances seem less consistent.
The international outrage following the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, allegedly on the orders of the Saudi Arabian regime, made multiple technology leaders pull out of Riyadh’s 2018 Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference last month. But Khashoggi’s murder is just one of a growing series of tests American tech giants are facing globally that reflect a deepening divide between businesses and the principles they espouse at home.
Saudi Arabia is the single largest funding source for U.S. startups, according to PitchBook, which has seen the country invest at least $ 11 billion since mid-2016, either directly or through SoftBank’s Vision Fund. Multiple private tech companies have accepted investment from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) — including Magic Leap, WeWork and Slack. In September, Google formally confirmed to Congress its plans to launch a censored search engine for China, under an initiative called Project Dragonfly, despite protests from its own employees. Rarely on the same side, Vice President Mike Pence and Human Rights Watch have independently criticized the project.
Facebook conceded earlier this year that it allowed Russian internet giant Mail.ru a two-week window beyond the norm to wind down a controversial feature that allowed app developers to compile their users’ friends’ data from Facebook. And in October, Facebook launched a special “lite” app for Turkey, demonstrating its intent to expand there, even though the firm’s own data shows Turkey as the country where content on the social media platform is most censored.
The way tech companies respond to requests for data can have a huge impact on human rights.
Cynthia Wong, senior researcher, Human Rights Watch
The gains for tech firms are clear, whether it’s investments from wealthy partners like Saudi Arabia or access to the world’s most populous country, China, where Google and its products are currently banned. Still, to simply label this approach from American tech firms as choosing money over values they claim to hold dear domestically would be to miss the complexities involved with such decisions, caution experts. In many cases, the products these firms are offering in closed nations could still help open them up. What is clear, though, is that these firms find themselves increasingly in the crosshairs of a heated debate that has boiled over following Khashoggi’s murder.
“The cynical thing to say is that these decisions are profit-based,” says Robert Föehl, executive-in-residence for business law and ethics at Ohio University. In Saudi Arabia, for example, it’s more useful to ask tech companies how they can help the country modernize rather than demanding that they pull out from the country altogether, Föehl says. There’s an opportunity, he explains, to provide “good jobs, wages and education.”
There’s no denying the tension that defines the relationship many American tech firms are pursuing with opaque regimes. In 2016, Uber accepted $ 3.5 billion from PIF — it remains the largest investment in a venture-backed company from an overseas government. A prominent Saudi leader, Yasir al-Rumayyan, sits on Uber’s board of directors. Following the Khashoggi killing, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi pulled out of the FII conference in Riyadh, but he has yet to comment on whether he will cut financial ties with the country. OZY reached out to Uber, Facebook and Google for comment. None responded.
Tech by its very nature is a rapidly evolving industry, so new ethical issues will continually arise. But the contradiction between firms’ domestic practices and demands by overseas governments has been growing. In 2015, the Turkish government requested Facebook, Twitter and YouTube remove political content related to Turkish involvement in the Syrian conflict. The companies complied. After the arrests of 11 Kurdish-backed politicians in 2016, Turkey slowed down the three social media platforms so much that they became unusable. Yet only last month Facebook chose Turkey to receive exclusive access to Facebook Lite for iOS — a slimmed-down version of the full app that uses less data — suggesting censorship isn’t a deal breaker.
If Project Dragonfly is any indication, Google doesn’t consider censorship a taboo either. In September, Google’s chief privacy officer, Keith Enright, confirmed the company is planning to create a censored search engine for China. About 1,400 Google employees signed a letter voicing opposition to the project, and senior research scientist Jack Poulson stepped down from the company, later revealing in a letter to the Senate that he believes Dragonfly directly contradicts Google’s own artificial intelligence principles regarding human rights. Human Rights Watch, in an open letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, pointed out how in 2010 Google itself had cited restrictions to freedom of expression online in China when it withdrew from the country.
Google still plans to move forward with the project. But the response from its employees points to the growing influence of tech workers, says tech ethicist David Ryan Polgar, founder of the All Tech Is Human initiative. “Employees are starting to ask, ‘Is this really an embodiment of our company culture?’” he says. “Google expanding in China really set employees off, because curbing free speech means you’re no longer a neutral actor.” Polgar doesn’t think the overseas business of companies like Facebook and Google is inherently nefarious — they just need to recognize that the conversation is changing. “Before, companies viewed questions of ethics as a dialogue between the company and the public,” says Polgar. “Now, it’s between the company, the public, regulators, the media and their employees.”
But who gets to decide if internet censorship is corrupt? Nicholas Kinports, the founder of high-end audio equipment manufacturer Lonelybrand, does business in Shenzhen — considered China’s Silicon Valley — year-round. He doesn’t think Chinese mainlanders are critical of Project Dragonfly. “We see it as negative, but they don’t,” Kinports says. What he observes in China is not an unhappy, oppressed society. “The Chinese tech market may eclipse the U.S. market entirely in a decade,” he says. “American tech companies have to at least try to tap into that customer base.”
Cynthia Wong, senior internet researcher for Human Rights Watch, says that sometimes American social media platforms are the most open platforms for free speech in countries with restrictive regimes. “In Vietnam, for example,” Wong says, “free speech is stifled in traditional media, but on Facebook people can speak a little more freely.” Google’s Pichai has also argued that Project Dragonfly will give ordinary Chinese people access to information — on cancer treatments, for instance — that they wouldn’t have otherwise.
Still, it’s a double-edged sword, Wong cautions. Many times, these governments are monitoring what people are saying and doing on the platforms. In 2005, Chinese activist Shi Tao was sentenced to 10 years in prison for allegedly providing state secrets to foreign entities after Yahoo gave the government access to his email account. “The way tech companies respond to requests for data can have a huge impact on human rights,” says Wong.
Giving up on expansion isn’t an option for any tech firm. Appearing to forfeit values they claim to subscribe to comes with its own risks. For American tech firms, this dilemma is likely to only grow.

When thousands of diseased and bloated pig carcasses floated down a tributary of the Huangpu River in Shanghai in early 2013, after being dumped upstream by farmers, the stench turned Zheng Lixing’s stomach.
“If you were there, you wouldn’t have been able to eat for a few days,” says Zheng, a native of Shaanxi province in northwest China with a doctorate in polymer science from Tianjin University of Science and Technology.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Sunday’s Supergirl (The CW, 8/7c) finally addresses the sleeping elephant in the room, as Kara and Brainy begin to help Nia accept and control her dreamy superpowers — and, time permitting, her narcolepsy. In fact, the threesome spends so much time in close quarters that the actors have begun referring to their characters as the show’s new “super friends.”
“There’s a really fun trio friendship forming,” Melissa Benoist told TVLine and other outlets during a recent visit to the show’s Vancouver set, adding that she’s excited for fans to see the “really fun antics they get up to.” Added Jesse Rath, “It becomes an issue of who knows whose identity at that point, so that’s a funny thing we play with during those scenes.”
Specifically, Nia and Brainy’s relationship is “really going to evolve,” Nicole Maines teased. “I’m really liking [them together]. They’re so fun, and they both kind of obvlious to each other — one more so than the other.”
As for Nia’s superpowers, which enable her to see visions of the future in her dreams, Maines explained, “It starts out with just dreaming and falling asleep at work.” (OK, that’s pretty relatable so far.) “But as they kind of develop, we start to see more quick manifestations and more instantaneous stuff.” (Alright, that’s less relatable.)
