Australia head coach Jacco Verhaeren said the champion butterflier had entered the four-day trials starting on Wednesday but it remained to be seen whether Groves contested them after a tough lead-up.
“I think with her we will see on the day,” Verhaeren said of the Rio 200m butterfly silver medallist’s chances.
Groves, 22, had to clear her name to contest the trials after facing suspension for missing three drug tests in 12 months.
Last October she escaped a ban when she successfully argued to the FINA doping panel that her third strike should not count because WADA testers did not do enough to find her.
Verhaeren said it had taken an emotional toll on Groves and had disrupted her preparation.
Adding to her anxiety before fronting the FINA doping panel, Dolphins teammates Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Jarrod Poort were hit with 12 month bans for the same offence.
Then Groves underwent surgery late last year to treat endometriosis, a painful condition where a lining in the uterus is found on another part of the body.
“There is a bit of a question mark (about Groves), she obviously had a very different preparation,” Verhaeren said.
“She had to deal with being on three strikes, which is obviously very difficult.
“We are very happy that it was proven that she wasn’t guilty of that, but as you can imagine emotionally it is draining.
“It puts you in a position where working hard and dealing with that is very difficult so she definitely started her preparation a bit later so let’s see where she is at.”
Verhaeren did not want to touch on Groves’ health battle but said the butterflier was back in the pool training.
The Dolphins mentor said they could not afford to push Groves ahead of the Gold Coast Games otherwise they risk burnout ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“It’s difficult to tell what level she is at but she is back in the water and training – she can look forward now,” Verhaeren said.
“(But) we got to take it easy with her and at the end of the day she needs to make a decision to get over a couple of issues – let’s hope that’s the case.”
Groves had been expected to tire in the later stages but it was his smaller rival who was left throwing punches at thin air in the final round, although both men went to war from almost the first bell.
Eubank Jr did show signs of the speed that makes him such a dangerous opponent but Groves’ long jab and strength on the inside was enough keep him at bay and claim victory.
The build-up to the fight had toed the line rather impressively, both men confident and insisting they had the upper hand, but stopping short of the slagging match that these things can sometimes become.
The weigh-in was the peak of it, when Groves and Eubank Jr faced off practically touching noses – but neither man breaking eye contact or lifting an arm in anger.
The ring walks were something to behold. Eubank Jr was booed almost to a man, walking stoney-faced through the crowd with a stare fixed firmly ahead. Groves followed him, more bouncy and showing a few more nerves, but when the two men met in the ring, there was little quarter given.
A cagey opening round saw Groves expected box behind the rangy jab, but the second saw both men open up, Eubank Jr once trapping Groves in the corner.
However, round three saw Groves draw first blood as both men threw waves of punches in bunches.
The cut to the IBO champion looked bad, coming early in the round and leaving him covered in blood. But he didn’t seem slowed by it, doubling up on the jab effectively in an effort to get into range.
The expectation was that Groves, a true super-middleweight, would push former British middleweight champion Eubank Jr around on the inside and so it proved in rounds five and six, with the referee forced to call timeout in the second and warn both fighters about their conduct.
But Groves grew into the fight wonderfully, stepping right to avoid Eubank Jr’s lead left and more often than not, catching his man on the way in before shifting to avoid or block the resulting flurry of punches.
The animosity between the two seemed to grow as the fight went on, perhaps recalling the months of sparring they had been through and realising how much this win meant to each.
Eubank Jr’s speed was still a factor though, Groves reticent to move in for the kill even when his opponent appeared hurt. However, he was doing so with enough regularity to win the rounds and leave Eubank Jr struggling to move in without taking damage.
Groves is the reigning WBA world super-middleweight champion, a title he won last year against Fedor Chudinov and successfully defended in the quarter-final against Jamie Cox.
Eubank Jr meanwhile holds the less recognised IBO belt on the weight division and is facing comfortably the biggest fight of his career in Groves.
The winner will face either Callum Smith or Jurgen Brahmer at the O2 Arena in the final in June – but getting through this fight will be no mean feat. Express Sport brings you all the latest action from Manchester.
10pm: Hatton, Fury, Bunce, all the Eubanks. It’s a who’s who or boxing superstars for the Wolrd Boxing Super Series. The light show has started, there is some dramatic music. Championship boxing is minutes away.
9.50pm: It’s big tune central in the Manchester Arena. That was one of the great renditions of Sweet Caroline. They’re now running through some great Madchester tunes and it’s going down a treat. What an atmosphere!
9.45pm: We have indeed gone the distance, and Walsh’s corner think they’ve won it for sure. That said, both men are being lifted up into the air and…it’s a draw! A three-way split with the judges and Walsh keeps the title – but I think we will see that one again.
9.30pm: Heading in to the championship rounds of the British featherweight title fight, our last of the night before the main event, and either man could take it. I reckon Isaac Lowe is yet to do enough to take the title off Ryan Walsh but he has marked up the champion – even if he doesn’t have the power to knock him out.
9pm: One hour to go, folks. Are you excited yet? I have been pretty much since this fight got confirmed by Groves’ win over Cox. At this point, I’m struggling to contain myself.
It’s been a really excellent build-up. For me, it’s been just the right mix of intensity, animosity and respect. Unsurprising, given these two are estimated to have shared around 300 rounds of sparring. Know each other? Yeah, they’ve met.
The two men differ in age by barely a year but have had quite different careers, Groves winning a world title last year after three times losing with a global strap on the line while Eubank Jr is only just now getting a shot at one.
But they will face familiar foes tonight when they get in the ring together, having previously sparred as many as 300 rounds against each other. There is little doubting that they know exactly who they are up against and don’t appear to like what they see.
Adam Booth, Groves’ coach for six years, was in on nearly all those sessions and reckons the rivalry between the two helped them both.
“I don’t think either of them ever had better spars in terms of the work they got in,” Booth told BoxingNews.
“They knew that if they made a mistake they would pay for it.
“There’s only one occasion I can recall when one of them was slightly hurt.
“That was, ironically, when George caught [Eubank] Junior with a left hook and Junior appeared to be stunned.
“There was definitely something that happened in that spar because of that left hook. That was probably one of the last spars they had.
“They did an average of six rounds each time and I’d guesstimate they did that on 30 different occasions. But it might be closer to 50.”
But Eubank Jr showed no signs of fear or nerves when he stared into Groves’ eyes ahead of the weigh-in.
“I told him he’s not ready, I can see it in his eyes,” Eubank Jr said.
“George doesn’t want to be here. I want this more than anything I’ve ever wanted.
“He doesn’t realise the danger he’s in. I am going to knock him out cold!”
Eubank Jr has also told Groves he will send him off to retirement – but the 29-year-old thinks his opponent has underestimated the challenge ahead of him.
“He is that ignorant he thinks he can do it himself,” Groves said.
“‘The cornermen give me water, I do the rest. I train myself, I know what I’m doing’.
“But it doesn’t work. The greatest fighters in the world have a great team or trainer around them just to nudge them in the right direction.
“His dad, Chris Eubank Snr, is supposed to be that, but it’s the blind leading the blind.”
The pop sensation is best known for his singing but was in attendance in purely a spectating capacity as the two Brits clashed with the WBA world super-middleweight belt on the line.
He has been spotted boxing before, using the sport as part of his fitness regime.
However, whiel the 24-year-old attempted to lay low at the event, he remained somewhat conspicuous in his ringside seat thanks to his unusual attire.
Express Sport were able to snap Payne wearing a bright red and yellow t-shirt with the logo of delivery firm DHL emblazoned on the front.
Payne was catapulted to fame as part of X Factor graduates “One Direction”.
The boyband did not win the competition but quickly shot to the top of the charts after forming during the show in 2010.
Payne has since branched out into a solo career and most recently released a song with Rita Ora for the film “Fifty Shades Freed” entitled “For You”.
But the former 1D star did not seem particularly enamoured with the action staying for just one fight before retreating backstage again.
Groves successfully defended his WBA super-middleweight belt at the first time of asking against Cox.
The 29-year-old proved his power by downing his opponent in the fourth round with a brutal body blow with Cox unable to get back up in the count.
But it was the challenger who started brightest at Wembley’s SSE Arena, pinning Groves in the corner in the second round with a barrage of punches.
However, when Groves began to settle behind his jab it was the 31-year-old who began looking out of sorts.
And the defending champion stepped it up a gear in the fourth, delivering a heavy body shot sending Cox to the canvas.
Groves’ win sets up a mouth-watering bout with Eubank Jr and the two boxers faced off in the ring soon after the Chelsea fan finished his fight with Cox.
And Eubank Jr is now looking forward to delivering a fight the fans have been calling for.
“It was a good fight,” Eubank Jr said. “He did what he had to do. It looks like we are on for January, I’m excited.
“It was a nice little body shot. Jamie Cox, respect to him, he put on one hell of a show.
“Now we have got a super fight for the fans.”
Indie studio Humble Grove’s enigmatic debut is a point-and-click game with a simple name: 29. Its dreamy atmosphere and low-polygon aesthetic recalls the desolate beauty of indie hits like Kentucky Route Zero, and every line of dialogue seems to carry a second meaning. It’ll launches on Steam and itch.io on November 29, and it’s free.
29 is the first chapter in a series called No Longer Home. Though this is Humble Grove’s first full game, the studio previously made a short prequel for a game jam, Friary Road. I’d played that one before, and the 29 demo is similar in how it’s loosely autobiographical and draped in magic realism.
The demo is a small snippet that starts with five friends in a living room floating in space. As they begin playing a choose-your-own-adventure text parser game on the TV, the walls drop away and their world is replaced by the game they’re playing.
I could select what I wanted to happen using multiple choice, accompanied by some offscreen banter from the characters. The story that unfolded felt like a metaphor: The hero of the game wanders through a forest, finding lost and mysterious objects in their search for a place to stay. Through some of the dialogue, I learned more about Bo and Ao, the two main characters that act as stand-ins for Humble Grove’s two lead developers, Tom Davison and Hana Lee.

“It can be a struggle to communicate when something in the game is actually happening within the world or whether we’re presenting what’s going on inside the character’s heads,” said Davison in an email to GamesBeat. “Although I feel like often there’s a lot of fun in blurring that line. Approaching the narrative with magical realism has allowed us to write about certain feelings much more freely.”
The demo lacked puzzle-solving. The landscape drifted in and out as I explored, and words appeared on the screen to a gauzy minimalist soundtrack. The general atmosphere recalled the kind of conversation you might have right before falling asleep: meditative, introspective, and sometimes a little too abstract to have certain meaning.
“It was something we were just doing for fun really, but gradually it grew into something more complex; we were writing these inner-monologues for characters that were based on ourselves,” said Davison. “We had a lot to say about the growing we’d done other the past few years. We felt incredible lost in terms of where our lives were going next.”
Davison and Lee met while studying illustration at Camberwell College of Arts in London, and they started working on the No Longer Home series after graduation. It started as a chronicle of the apartment they’d shared while in school and grew from there.
“There’s always the worry of it slipping into a vanity project, which I think we’ve been very careful to avoid,” said Davison. “More than anything else it’s been a challenge trying minimalize people misgendering the characters, and by proxy, us. As we are both non-binary [gender that is not exclusively male or female], so are the characters (Bo and Ao); both of them use they/them pronouns and they’re always referred to this way within the game.”
As the game progresses, players learn more about the characters through branching dialogue and by examining Bo and Ao’s apartment. Davison says though it can be classified as a point-and-click game, the main mechanic is rotating the environments and inspecting them from various perspectives. They call out Gone Home, Nina Freeman‘s vignettes, and Kentucky Route Zero as sources of inspiration, particularly the way the latter uses space.
“When designing the environments we consider it as a stage, for the player and other characters to use. Another part of that is building sets with moving parts in mind,” said Davison. “One of the things I enjoy most about film and theatre is how space is used to express what might be going on in the characters’ thoughts.”

Ann Crady Weiss, the niece of former Intel CEO Andy Grove, spoke out on behalf of immigrants in the wake of President Donald Trump’s executive order banning travel to the U.S. by immigrants from seven Muslim countries.
Crady Weiss’ story on NewCo Shift is yet another sign that the tech community is at odds with Trump on immigration policy. It also shows what one generation can learn from the hardships of the previous generation. Crady Weiss is a venture partner at True Ventures, but she wrote the post without identifying herself that way.
Crady Weiss wrote, “My uncle immigrated to the United States in 1956 with no assets, a brilliant mind, ambition, and a faith that America was a great country of opportunity. He escaped from Hungary, a country of communists, at the time a source of great fear among many US politicians. If the U.S. President at his time were making policy similar to our President today, my uncle would’ve never been allowed in the US. My uncle was a good and decent American who, until his death last year, contributed an incredible amount to this country.”
Grove died last year. He was one of the key figures of the information age, and he was famous for his hard-charging management style, summed up as “only the paranoid survive.” He was present as a founding employee at Intel, alongside founders Robert Noyce, who died in 1990, and Gordon Moore, who still survives as Intel’s chairman emeritus. Not only did Grove play a key role in making Intel into the world’s biggest chip maker, he also set the pace for competing in what has become a $ 347 billion global industry.
Crady Weiss noted that Grove, who survived the Holocaust and crossed the border into the West at great risk after the Hungarian Revolution, never forgot his humble beginnings.
She wrote, “He was riddled with symptoms of Parkinson’s, but made it a point to say something. ‘As we sit here and celebrate what we have done, let’s remember that millions of young people who had the misfortune of being born in the wrong national boundaries are going through all the horrors [I did]. I made it. Let’s try to help them.’”
She added, “This is my attempt. We are so very lucky to live in this great country where we can speak our minds no matter what our views. I am absolutely sure that the vast majority of Americans, in their heart of hearts, want to help those in need. I am also sure that we reject the notion that we should summarily ban the next Andy Grove from the US because of the country he happened to be born in. Please speak up in the name of the millions of young people who cannot speak up on their own. Please speak in the best way you think you will be heard.”
And she closed with criticism for Trump, saying, “The man in the White House today lost the popular vote and won the electoral college because of a couple hundred thousand votes going his way. He has the lowest approval ratings of any other President at the same time in office. America will reject him when next allowed. In the meantime, let’s all stand up and make what we stand for known.”
