A group of tech-savvy Ukrainian soldiers is making drones and explosives to be used at the front line of the conflict in the country's Donbas region.

  • A team of young soldiers in Ukraine is building drones and explosives to be used on the front lines.
  • They are creating drones loaded with bombs to be used in combat in the Donbas region.
  • Some of the bombs come inscribed with messages like "happy birthday."

A new Agence France-Presse video shows a group of young Ukrainian troops making drones and bombs from a basement close to the front lines of the ongoing conflict in the country's Donbas region.

In the video, a group of around a dozen men in fatigues is seen working on small, remotely-piloted robots. AFP reported that the devices were scavenged from damaged aircraft.

The AFP video, which describes the men as a "group of 20-somethings," also shows a soldier named Varnak, who has been tasked with packing the robots with explosives.

"Their job is to make it move. My job is to make it explode, to fill it with explosives as effectively as possible so that it does the most damage to the enemy, or their tanks, or other military equipment," he told the outlet.

Also seen in the video were bombs made by the team, which come inscribed with personal messages to their Russian enemies, including the sarcastic "happy birthday" and the matter-of-fact "today is a Wednesday, man."

This picture shows bombs ready to be mounted on a drone in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on September 25, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These message-inscribed bombs are meant to be dropped from drones.

Ukraine has been wresting large swathes of territory from the Russians, particularly in the Kharkiv region.

However, the skies over the highly-contested eastern Donbas have been the site of a fierce aerial battle, with the Ukrainians leaning on drones created by its fighters — many of whom are tech enthusiasts — to be flown in combat.

The US has also sent thousands of drones to Ukraine for use in the ongoing conflict. The figure includes 121 Phoenix Ghosts, a type of unmanned aerial system that can be launched by front-line troops for single attacks.

Longyearbyen, the largest city in Svalbard on May 2, 2022.

  • Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago by the North Pole, is one of the world's only visa-free zones.
  • But residents who can't support themselves or find housing can be expelled by the governor.
  • Insider spoke with four locals (one of whom was deported) about what it's like to work in Svalbard.

In a world where your passport dictates where you can live, travel, and work, there's a semi-frozen haven open to citizens of all countries — no complicated visa or employment permits required.

Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago 500 miles from the North Pole, is home to the world's northernmost human settlement. The 2,300 residents of the capital, Longyearbyen, include people of over 40 different nationalities, few of whom are "from" Svalbard, per say.

That's because you're not allowed to give birth on Svalbard — one of the many strange rules that govern existence on the remote collection of islands covered by ice.

There are surprises of course, whom the town endearingly calls "Svalbard babies" even when they're grown, Cecilia Blomdahl, a popular content creator based in Longyearbyen, said in an interview with Insider.

Among Svalbard's other odd rules left over from its days as a coal mining town include a monthly alcohol limit (24 beers, half a bottle of fortified wine, and one bottle of liquor), and a ban on cats to protect the bird population.

But the most important rule of all: Don't run out of money. And certainly don't find yourself without a home.

Cecilia Blomdahl's cabin in Longyearbyen, one of the few homes of its kind on the island.
Cecilia Blomdahl's cabin in Longyearbyen, one of the few homes of its kind on the island.

While the Svalbard treaty of 1920 permits anyone to live and work on the archipelago indefinitely, its open borders come with an asterisk: You must have enough money to support yourself and a roof over your head, or risk expulsion from the territory.

"You can stay here for as long as you can take care of yourself," Blomdahl said. "That means how you get to work, how you live, your housing — nothing will be provided for you."

Despite being a sovereignty of Norway, Svalbard employees pay an 8% income tax and local businesses contribute zero taxes toward the country's national insurance program (the mainland's current tax rate is 14% and 22% respectively). As a result, there are no retirement homes, public transport, homeless shelters, unemployment benefits, or really any social safety net you can think of.

Nobody understands this trade off quite like Mark Sabbatini, the founder and editor of IcePeople, "the world's northernmost alternative newspaper," who was kicked off Svalbard in 2021 after living in Longyearbyen for over a decade.

He moved to the island from the US in 2008 with around $ 1 million dollars in the bank and ambitions to launch an English-language newspaper, Sabbatini told Insider.

While running IcePeople, two of Sabbatini's apartments were condemned due to environmental issues he said were exacerbated by the area's rapidly warming climate. The first was built on top of thawing permafrost, and the second was located in a newly determined avalanche zone.

"At that point, I didn't have a whole lot of money and it was a big scramble every month to scrounge up stuff," he said. "I was begging, borrowing — not stealing, but pretty close."

After squatting in a friend's cabin during the pandemic, Sabbatini succumbed to his last resort: sleeping at the campground where a guide was killed in a polar bear attack the year before. That's when the governor gave him the boot.

"I was horribly miserable, but it was absolutely the right decision," Sabbatini, who now works at a local paper in Alaska, recalled.

"It's a very fair system. Your taxes are incredibly low, but the trade off is you get no social support," he continued. "If you're not paying for that system, why should you benefit from it?"

Cafe huskies Svalbard
"The planning of the schedule for the dog employees has been much more difficult than the human one," Fiala said.

Thanks to the local housing crisis, it's easier to find work on Svalbard than a place to live. Despite 2.5 months of complete darkness and below-freezing temperatures, the capital of Longyearbyen is a great place to be an entrepreneur, according to Martin Fiala, one of the co-founders of Café Huskies.

"If you have some idea, you're probably the only one who's doing it [in Svalbard]" he said. "I think if we set this up in a regular city where there's five other coffee places or shops on the same block, I don't think we'd be as successful."

But the area's remoteness also creates a separate set of challenges, Fiala explained, especially when it comes to shipping in goods from the mainland.

"If the coffee machine breaks, no one here can fix it and it would take weeks for us to get another one," he said, adding that "there's one guy in town who knows how to fix an industrial dishwasher."

"As soon as we save up some more money, we want to buy or rent another one and have it as a spare," he told Insider. "If there's ever a moon colony set up, I think we'd be perfect for it. It's really like a space station here."

Martin Fiala and his dog
Martin Fiala and his dog, Tequila: "Most of my job is to just to hike with my dog in like mountains. The price to pay is that it's exhausting and chaotic, but that's pretty awesome," Fiala told Insider.

Fiala and his co-founders all have second jobs, which made the launch of Café Huskies less of a financial risk. He studied architecture but currently works as a nature guide — one of many professionals in the local tourist economy with hidden passions.

"Here, in tourism, you have a lot of people working in reception, guiding, driving a truck," he told Insider. "But they're also an economist, a chemist, a photographer."

Why do people of so many different backgrounds and careers continue flocking to one of the world's most remote towns? One answer, according to Fiala, is that the extremity of life in Svalbard serves as a "catalyst" for both the best and worst qualities of humans.

"If you're depressed and you have a drinking problem and you come here, you'll probably just end up just drinking through the winter," he explained. "But if you're trying to finish the book, you're just going to do it. Life here gets dialed up."

Aaron Weinman here. On Thursday, Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died at Balmoral Castle aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. You can read more about her life and legacy here.

In finance news, Citi has scored a much-needed legal victory over its embarrassing "fat-finger" mistake. The bank persuaded a federal appeals court to force Revlon creditors to give Citi back $ 504 million.

In August 2020, Citi accidentally sent Revlon lenders — including Brigade Capital Management, Symphony Asset Management, and HPS Investment Partners — more than $ 900 million.

It was the ultimate blunder on Wall Street. And while Citi managed to recover nearly half the amount, the accidental payment shone a light on Citi's internal processing systems for transactions, and fostered debate over whether processes like repayments could be automated to mitigate human error.

Chief Executive Jane Fraser called it a "massive unforced error." And internally, Citi bankers did have a laugh about it.

"The first reaction in investment banking was a combination of 'what a f'ing joke' and 'there goes our bonus,'" one senior banker told me.

Thursday's decision is the ideal tonic for Citi in an otherwise turbulent investment-banking environment.

Oh and ICYMI — Revlon filed for bankruptcy in June.

And don't forget, it's time for the Banker of the Week!

Anddddd, I stopped by CBS yesterday to talk Janet Yellen and her speech in Detroit. Check it out here!

People walk in front of a Citibank
The prestigious bank has lost 4 TMT bankers in recent weeks.

1. Citi has won its appeal over its Revlon loan blunder, helping it to recover about $ 500 million.

The US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit in Manhattan said the lenders were not entitled to the repayment and had been told that the wiring was a human error.

A trio of judges overturned US District Judge Jesse Furman's decision, which allowed the lenders to keep the $ 504 million, ruling that the lenders should not have been expected to know the transfer was a mistake.

Citi argued that the lenders should have been skeptical of receiving such a payment because there was no notice that Revlon's term loan was being paid off. That loan was scheduled to mature in 2023.

Citi was Revlon's agent bank, meaning that it would act as a conduit between lenders that participated in the loan and Revlon as the borrower.

In sending such a large amount, Citi's lawyers argued that those receiving it should have known it was an error. Or at least had the wherewithal to ask why such a sum of money was sent their way well ahead of the loan maturing.

The lenders, however, argued that Judge Furman's decision should stand because those who receive money from reputable third parties like Citi should not question if the payments are legitimate.

For those of you who like to mine through court documents, here is the ruling from the appellate panel.

Hong Kong's senior superintendent Steve Li holds up a copy of one of the books at the center of the case.

  • Five speech therapists in Hong Kong have been convicted of sedition for publishing three books.
  • The illustrated children's books depict sheep warriors defending their homes from evil wolves.
  • A Hong Kong judge ruled that the stories were allegories for current events in Hong Kong.

Five speech therapists in Hong Kong were found guilty of sedition on Wednesday for publishing three picture books depicting sheep defending their home from wolves.

The therapists may face up to two years in prison under a colonial-era British law against seditious offenses, which the city's authorities have recently revived to use in tandem with a sweeping new national security law.

Prosecutors said the evil wolves in the books were an allusion to the mainland Chinese authorities while the kind sheep represented Hong Kong residents, according to a judgment published by the courts.

The five defended themselves by saying the books are fables meant to teach universally-celebrated virtues and are open to interpretation, per the court judgment.

Content of children's books are displayed on a TV screen during a press conference after five people were arrested under suspicion of conspiring to publish seditious material at the Hong Kong Police Headquarters on July 22, 2021 in Hong Kong, China. National Security Department of Hong Kong Police Force arrested five members of the General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists over three children's books featuring sheep that are suspected of inciting hatred towards the Hong Kong SAR government.
Content from one of the books seen displayed during a press conference held following the arrest of the five speech therapists.

However, District Judge Wai Kin Kwok ruled that the books were seditious "not merely from the words, but from the words with the proscribed effects intended to result in the mind of children."

In one of the books, a "Wolf-Chairman" directed another wolf to masquerade as a sheep in an attempt to occupy the sheep village and eat those inside, Kwok wrote in a summary, per court records.

Kwok described the disguised wolf as an analogy for the Beijing-backed Chief Executive of Hong Kong, which he wrote would lead children to view the city's real-life leader with contempt.

Another book, titled "12 Warriors of Sheep Village," appears to reference the 12 Hong Kong protestors who were caught trying to flee to Taiwan by sea in 2020. The book tells the story of 12 sheep who fled their village in a boat but were later captured and brought to be imprisoned in a wolf-run fortress.

Kwok wrote that children who read the book would be "led to believe that the 12 fugitives are victims of oppression and unfair prosecution."

The third book involved a story that Kwok said would lead children to believe Beijing had allowed people coming from mainland China to "make their home dirty and spread the pandemic."

The five defendants — Lai Man-Ling, Melody Yeung, Sidney Ng, Samuel Chan, and Fong Tsz-Ho — have been detained since July last year and were denied bail. All five are below the age of 30 and are due to be sentenced on Saturday.

Supporters of a pro-democracy union pose with illustrations of sheep outside West Kowloon Court in Hong Kong on July 23, 2021, where members of the union face charges of sedition for publishing children's books which allegedly try to explain the city's democracy movement using illustrations of sheep.
Supporters seen posing with illustrations of sheep outside the West Kowloon Court in Hong Kong in July last year.

Human Rights Watch on Wednesday called for the sedition convictions to be reversed.

"Hong Kong people used to read about the absurd prosecution of people in mainland China for writing political allegories, but this is now happening in Hong Kong," said Maya Wang, a senior Chinese researcher for the non-profit group.

"Hong Kong authorities should reverse this dramatic decline in freedoms and quash the convictions of the five children's book authors," she added.

"Concerned governments should speak out against Hong Kong's abuse of the sedition law," Human Rights Watch wrote in a release, urging the governments of Australia, the European Union, and the UK to join the US in imposing sanctions on Hong Kong officials stamping out dissent.

Financially motivated hackers with ties to a notorious Conti cybercrime group are repurposing their resources for use against targets in Ukraine, indicating that the threat actor’s activities closely align with the Kremlin’s invasion of its neighboring country, a Google researcher reported on Wednesday.

Since April, a group researchers track as UAC-0098 has carried out a series of attacks that has targeted hotels, non-governmental organizations, and other targets in Ukraine, CERT UA has reported in the past. Some of UAC-0098’s members are former Conti members who are now using their sophisticated techniques to target Ukraine as it continues to ward off Russia’s invasion, Pierre-Marc Bureau, a researcher in Google’s Threat Analysis said.

An unprecedented shift

“The attacker has recently shifted their focus to targeting Ukrainian organizations, the Ukrainian government, and European humanitarian and non-profit organizations,” Bureau wrote. “TAG assesses UAC-0098 acted as an initial access broker for various ransomware groups including Quantum and Conti, a Russian cybercrime gang known as FIN12 / WIZARD SPIDER.”

Who Is The New Marvel Group Introduced In She-Hulk? The Wrecking Crew Explained https://briefnews.eu/who-is-the-new-marvel-group-introduced-in-she-hulk-the-wrecking-crew-explained/ https://briefnews.eu/who-is-the-new-marvel-group-introduced-in-she-hulk-the-wrecking-crew-explained/#respond Thu, 01 Sep 2022 16:48:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/who-is-the-new-marvel-group-introduced-in-she-hulk-the-wrecking-crew-explained/

This post contains spoilers for episode 3 of “She-Hulk: Attorney at law.”

“She-Hulk: Attorney At Law” isn’t a show that lacks in self-awareness, that’s for sure. After the premiere episode charted Jennifer Walters’ (Tatiana Maslany) origin story alongside a healthy dose of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk, the second episode (re)introduced Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky/Abomination, a holdover from 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” who many fans wouldn’t have expected to see again before his appearance in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Now, today’s episode gifted us with yet another cameo by Wong (Benedict Wong), the Sorcerer Supreme who has now made a habit of popping up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when you’d least expect him to. All this was wryly acknowledged early in the third episode, with She-Hulk once again breaking the fourth wall to remind viewers of exactly whose show this is.

But this series isn’t solely about bringing back fan-favorites — Jen still has her own distinct journey to follow and her own unique antagonists to face. We met one of them in the form of Jameela Jamil’s Titania and now, in the waning moments of episode three, we’ve now got a whole new group of villains to contend with.

While Jen is walking home after a long day at the office, having successfully helped out both Blonsky and her profoundly irritating former co-worker Dennis Bukowski (Drew Matthews), she suddenly comes under attack by what seems like a band of anonymous creeps. Although She-Hulk dispatches them with ease, the fact that they brandish mystical construction tools apparently stolen from New Asgard and then subsequently talk about a mysterious “boss” who recruited them to try and inject She-Hulk (or extract from her?) with some sort of device indicates something more nefarious at work.

Meet the Wrecking Crew, a group of no-gooders from the comics making their MCU debut.

Who Are The Wrecking Crew?

Like many other characters in the Marvel Comics source material, the history of the formidable Wrecking Crew is full of twists and turns and unexpected connections. For one thing, the Wrecking Crew are actually typically considered to be villains of Thor, which neatly explains their New Asgard connection in “She-Hulk.” Created by Len Wein and Sal Buscema, the criminal team-up consists of Dr. Eliot Franklin/Thunderball, Henry Camp/Bulldozer, Brian Calusky/Piledriver, and their ringleader Dirk Garthwaite/Wrecker. In issue #17 of the 1974 “Defenders” comic book run, the team was imbued with their mystical powers when Garthwaite and the other three took up an enchanted crowbar (comics, baby!) in the middle of a thunderstorm, were struck by lightning, and immediately formed their fancy new supervillain group. As one does.

Their first appearance saw Bruce Banner himself eventually called in to help clean up the Wrecking Crew’s mess, further strengthening the Hulk connections in their live-action debut in the Disney+ series. Although dead-set on vanquishing Thor, the crew have also had run-ins with various other superheroes such as Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Captain America, and the Runaways. Far from just a mere inconvenience to the good guys, however, the Wrecking Crew have had a penchant for joining forces with the likes of Helmut Zemo’s Masters of Evil organization and Mr. Sinister, and they even a memorable run-in with the god of mischief Loki. Armed with Wrecker’s powerful crowbar and Thunderball’s ball and chain, the group has posed a significant threat that sees them repeatedly fighting heroes, ending up in prison, and breaking out all over again to begin the cycle anew.

Thus far, the “She-Hulk” end credits only identify that Wrecker is portrayed by actor Nick Gomez and Thunderball by Justin Eaton. Expect to see much more of them in the future.

How Will They Factor Into She-Hulk?

After their failed assault on Jen Walters in “She-Hulk,” the Wrecking Crew regroup in their getaway van to lick their wounds. At this point, the apparent leader of the team asks Thunderball, “Did you get it?” Without elaborating further, the henchman begrudgingly admits that his attempt to stab Jen with some sort of needle-like device failed because, “Once she turned into She-Hulk, I couldn’t pierce that nasty green skin.” Alluding to a “boss” who’s not going to respond well to this defeat, the gang takes off and the episode ends with one last lingering shot of She-Hulk.

Naturally, fans immediately began to speculate about the nature of that person behind the curtain who may be pulling the strings. As if the predominantly negative media attention and aggravating clients at work weren’t enough, it certainly appears that Jen will soon find herself dealing with an extremely motivated and undoubtedly troublesome new foe — one who might be after the gamma-radiation secrets locked within her blood.

So who might that “boss” be? Well, one obvious and immediate answer could bring back yet another “The Incredible Hulk” character. Although Kevin Feige has made greater strides over the years to mesh the once-estranged film back into the MCU proper, even the biggest fans likely gave up hope on ever seeing Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns ever again — even after his attempts to help Bruce and especially his concluding moments in the film, which saw him transforming into the villainous Leader. But could “She-Hulk” finally bring the family back together again, paying off one of the great unresolved plot threads in the MCU and bringing yet another thoroughly entertaining actor into the fold?

New episodes of “She-Hulk” air on Disney+ every Thursday.

Unfortunately this won’t be the case, and Fox is unable to officially confirm when the series will return to its regular Wednesday schedule.

As baseball enthusiasts know, there’s every chance the World Series could extend to seven games.

This would mean The Masked Singer’s expected return next Wednesday, October 28, would also be pushed back to make way for the most pivotal moments of the World Series.

As the Dodgers handily came out on top in their first game, it’s hoped the Series can wrap up within the week and Masked Singer fans can finally meet Group C.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8:00pm on Fox.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

The Islanders are made up of personalities from ITV hit show, Love Island however, X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary recently revealed that the group has officially changed their name.

The former Islander are made up of Wes Nelson, Eyal Brooker, Samira Mighty and Zara McDermott who all impressed fans with their version of Shawn Mendes’ ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back’.

Before viewers got comfortable with the group name, it was changed just days before the live shows.

X Factor presenter Dermot revealed the group’s new name in an interview with BBC Radio One’s Nick Grimshaw yesterday.

Dermot said to Nick: “I think today they’ve changed their name. Is it No Love Lost?”

The tweet said: “The artist formerly known as The Love Islanders are pleased to announce their new name*drum roll* No Love Lost! Much love to everyone who sent in name suggestions!”

Fans seemed to have mixed feelings about the name as one Twitter user wrote: “ That’s so cheesy lol, but it kinda works. #XFactorCelebrity”

Another commented: “I don’t know if I like it.”

“Can think of a better name….. Love them guys but they were the worst apart from the Hoff’s daughter,” another fan added.

The first episode featured a clip of the group where they revealed that they bonded with each other from their time in the villa.

“Prior to Love Island, if you had asked me what was my dream job, it would have been a singer,” Wes told viewers.

The reason the group was formed because they “got on so well” and “because of the camaraderie”, they said.

They were the first ones to sing to the judges and they pulled it off very well.

Judge Simon Cowell said: “For a first audition, bearing in mind where you came from, it was a good performance but it’s finding your distinct sound.”

“It was so good,” Nicole Scherzinger added.

Judge Louis Walsh was also impressed as he said “it was really good.”

There’s no doubt about the group’s vocal ability and chemistry but will they be able to impress the viewers in the live shows?

X Factor Celebrity will air tomorrow at 8.20pm on ITV.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

New York investigates Apple’s Group FaceTime privacy bug https://briefnews.eu/new-york-investigates-apples-group-facetime-privacy-bug/ https://briefnews.eu/new-york-investigates-apples-group-facetime-privacy-bug/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 00:50:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-york-investigates-apples-group-facetime-privacy-bug/

You knew it was just a matter of time before Apple’s Group FaceTime ‘eavesdropping’ bug drew the attention of politicians. New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched an investigation into the FaceTime flaw in hopes of understanding both its “failure to warn consumers” and reports of a “slow response” to the problem. Stated residents “need to know that their phones are safe,” Governor Cuomo added.

The State Department’s consumer protection division is accepting public complaints about the bug through a phone line Mondays through Fridays.

There’s no guarantee the investigation will lead to action. There are reports of a mother and son reporting the issue days before it became public knowledge, but it’s not clear that Apple was wasting time — the company already has a fix planned for later in the week. It also disabled Group FaceTime remotely shortly after the bug became public knowledge. If the investigation does turn up problems with Apple’s approach, though, it won’t be shocking if New York takes legal action demanding swifter and more transparent responses to privacy and security issues.
