Gatwick Airport flights have all been grounded since last night when drones were spotted illegally flying over the airfield. The major security alert resulted in outbound flights being diverted and incoming planes diverted. They will remain disrupted for a further 24 hours, the hub has said. Passengers have been advised against travelling to the airport without checking the status of their flight first. Flights have been diverted to other airports including London Heathrow, Luton and Manchester as well as Paris and Amsterdam. This is the latest travel advice for travellers due to fly to or from the London airport, whether flying with Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic.

Thursday 20 December, 11.05am

Gatwick have announced passengers flying to or from Gatwick will face at least another 24 hours of disruption.

Passengers will not be entitled to compensation as a result of the incident but they could be entitled to food, accommodation and transport.

“Whilst these extraordinary circumstances unfortunately mean you are not entitled to compensation, you may still be entitled to meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation or transfers,” said Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Products and Services.

“You don’t have to cancel your tickets though, as depending on the length of the delay, your airline should be providing you with alternative travel options or accommodation.”

Thursday 20 December, 10.52am

Police are now appealing for help in identifying those responsible for flying the drones over Gatwick. “We are appealing for information to help us identify the operators of the Gatwick drones,” Sussex Police tweeted. “If you know who’s responsible or have any information please call 999 and quote ref 1350-19/12.”

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw has said the incident is “absolutely” a deliberate act. He said: “This has been going on for 10 hours now. Each time we believe we get close to the operator, the drone disappears; when we look to reopen the airfield, the drone reappears. I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport.”

Thursday 20 December, 10.24am

Police have said there is no evidence the drone incident at Gatwick is terror-related. Sussex police tweeted: “We are carrying out a joint search with Gatwick Airport for the operators of drones sighted at Gatwick. Public safety is paramount and we will take all available actions to disrupt this deliberate act. There are no indications to suggest this is terror-related.”

The last sighting of the drone was at about 8.45am today, police have said. Gatwick chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe has said police do not want to shoot the devices down because of the risk from stray bullets.

The airport is due to remain closed until 11am now, according to Eurocontrol.

Thursday 20 December, 10.15am

Experts say they believe the drones were deliberately used to create as much disruption at the airport as possible.

Former RAF fighter pilot and instructor Jon Parker, now an airline pilot, regularly flies into Gatwick and runs drone training company Flyby Technology. He told Sky News: “It sounds like more than one drone has been used which seems to me like it could be a concerted effort to disrupt operations.”

He added: “The usual practice is to suspend flights for half-an-hour which is the usual battery lifespan for drones but it may be in the Gatwick case whoever is responsible for this have had several batteries and have brought their drones back to the ground to put new batteries on them.”

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw tod BBC more than 20 police units are searching for the drone operator. He said: “I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport.”

Rail operator LNER is offering free travel between London and Edinburgh for all passengers unable to fly between the two capitals due to Gatwick’s flight cancellations.

To qualify for free travel on LNER trains, passengers should show their flight ticket for their cancelled journey to the train manager.

Ryanair has updated their travel advice on their website with the statement: “We have been advised that London Gatwick Airport expected to re-open at 10am (20 Dec) following an earlier runway closure. Please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.”

Virgin Atlantic has posted the statement: “Flights to and from London Gatwick airport have been suspended this morning due to reports of drones flying close to the airfield.

“The safety and security of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we may be forced to delay or divert flights until the airport resumes full operation. We would like to assure any customers due to travel with us that we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to their travel plans. For the latest information please check Flight Status.”

Thursday 20 December, 9.45am

Gatwick’s boss has said one of the drones is a heavy industrial drone. It is illegal to fly drones within 1km of an airport boundary. The offence is punishable by up to five years in prison.

“All flights to and from Gatwick are suspended due to ongoing drone activity around the airport,” Gatwick have tweeted. “Unfortunately, there are significant delays and cancellations to all flights today. Please do not travel to the airport without checking the status of your flight with your airline first. We apologise to everyone affected, but the safety of all our passengers and staff is our number one priority.”

Thursday 20 December, 9.17am

Chris Woodroofe, COO of Gatwick Airport, told Sky News: “The police have 20 units out looking for the operator of that drone, and once they find them, they will bring them to justice, which is five years imprisonment for endangering an aircraft.”

EasyJet is advising passengers to not travel to Gatwick if their flights have been affected.

Thursday 20 December, 9.13am

Gatwick said 110,000 passengers were due to either take off or land at the airport on 760 flights today.

Thursday 20 December, 9.03am

Norwegian has announced all its Gatwick flights are grounded. Customers can be fully refunded if their flights are affected or they can rebook for free.

“Following reports of drones flying over Gatwick’s airfield in the early hours of this morning all flights remain suspended at the airport,” a Norwegian spokesperson told Express.co.uk

“Norwegian would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we advise customers to check the status of their flight on Norwegian.com before travelling to the airport.

“Customers on flights that have been cancelled can rebook free of charge or receive a full refund. The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.”

Thursday 20 December, 8.18am

Gatwick Airport has said police are still hunting for the person(s) responsible for flying the drone after another device was sighted just before 7am.

European air traffic management group Eurocontrol has said the runway will remain closed until 10am.

Thursday 20 December, 8.15am

It is illegal to fly drones close to airports. According to dronesafe.com: “On 30 July the UK drone rules changed to make it against the law to fly above 400ft (120m) and to make it against the law to fly your drone within 1km of an airport or airfield boundary.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has tweeted: “It is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment. Anyone operating a drone must do so responsibly and observe all relevant rules and regulations.”

Thursday 20 December, 8.10am

Gatwick Airport confirms all flights remain grounded on Twitter: “Due to drone activity on the airfield at Gatwick, all arriving and departing flights are currently suspended.

“Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport today. We’re sorry to everyone affected, safety is our number 1 priority.”

They added: “Please do not travel to the airport without checking with your airline first.”

Thursday 20 December, 7.50am

Check-in queues at Gatwick continue to expand despite all flights being suspended.

Furious passengers have complained of being stuck in planes for hours. Many were forced to sleep overnight on the floor of Gatwick Airport or on planes stuck on the tarmac.

Thursday 20 December, 7.45am

easyJet announced on Twitter: “Due to the LGW closure overnight, we expect there to be some disruption to flights this morning.

“We advise customers to check flight tracker before travelling. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

British Airways released a statement, saying: “All flights to and from London Gatwick airport are suspended while authorities investigate reports of drones flying close to the airfield.”

Thursday 20 December, 7.40am

According to travel expert Simon Calder well over 50 easyJet flights would have been affected by the security breach and is the “worst affected airline,” Calder said on Good Morning Britain today.

Calder said the breach could be serious: “The Sussex Police believe there is more to it than a couple of idiots with a couple of drones flying,” he said.

The incident could cause particular trouble for those flying long haul due to the competition over seats at this time of year.

Calder said: “It is looking bad. If your flight is cancelled you go right to the back of the queue – you are struggling for seats and there are few seats available at this time of year.”

He cautioned passengers could be affected by flight disruption right up to Christmas Eve as a result of the drone incident.

“If you are flying long haul, even if the airport opened right at this very minute, there would still be hours of disruption and it could be up to before Christmas Eve before it is sorted out,” he said.

Jets remain grounded by Golden Knights' quick-strike offence https://briefnews.eu/jets-remain-grounded-by-golden-knights-quick-strike-offence/ https://briefnews.eu/jets-remain-grounded-by-golden-knights-quick-strike-offence/#respond Sat, 19 May 2018 07:40:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jets-remain-grounded-by-golden-knights-quick-strike-offence/ The Winnipeg Jets had life in this one, a lot of life.

Tyler Myers blasted a shot through the pads of Vegas Golden Knights MVP Marc-Andre Fleury to tie Game 4 early in the third period.

Since the Myers goal, it seemed like it was just a matter of time before the Jets would score the go-ahead goal to tie up the West final.

A little more than seven minutes later, however, Jets forward Brandon Tanev employed his world-class speed to carry the puck deep into the Vegas end.

He circled behind the Golden Knights goal and slid a pass back to Dustin Byfuglien at the blue line. Byfuglien whiffed on his one-time attempt.

Vegas playmaker Reilly Smith jumped on the mistake.

He lassoed the loose puck and had a partial breakaway. But instead of cruising in on the Jets goal, Smith seemed to surprise Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck with a pinpoint snapshot that fluttered from 30-feet out over the netminder's right shoulder with 6:58 remaining.

Vegas edges Winnipeg 3-2, leads series 3-2. Expansion team 1 win away from advancing to Stanley Cup final. 1:49

The Jets needed a big save at this time. But Hellebuyck was caught too close to his crease instead of being out to challenge Smith. Another game-winner for the upstart and opportunistic expansion Golden Knights.

Their 3-2 victory at home has put this remarkable team, this remarkable story, a win away from advancing to the Stanley Cup final.

Quick-strike answer

"You don't want to take away from their team, they cash in on their opportunities, but we win that game, nine times out of 10," Jets captain Blake Wheeler said.

The difficult part about the way this series has transpired for the Jets is that the Golden Knights always seem to have a quick-strike answer whenever the Jets score a key goal.

Okay, sure, seven-and-a-half minutes of action elapsed between the Myers game-tying goal and Smith's game-winner. But consider what the Golden Knights have done in their three-game win streak to take over this conference final:

  • In Game 2 on Monday, Winnipeg's Kyle Connor scored to push the Jets within 2-1 only to see Golden Knights sniper Jonathan Marchessault restore the two-goal lead 88 seconds later.
  • In Game 3 on Wednesday, young star Mark Scheifele drew the Jets even early in the second period. But a dozen seconds later Vegas veteran James Neal put his team ahead for good in the 4-2 outcome.
  • On this fateful Friday, Patrik Laine scored on the power play to tie the game midway through the second period. But, for the third game in a row, Vegas forward Tomas Nosek, the same player who took a tripping penalty in the offensive zone that led to the Laine goal, scored 43 seconds later.

It's not like this quick-strike phenomenon has been lost on Jets head coach Paul Maurice. He had his checking line of Adam Lowry, Andrew Copp and Tanev out there as well as his shutdown defence pairing of Josh Morrissey and Jacob Trouba. But Trouba was in a fog and was caught watching instead of picking up Nosek.

'I don't like the goals'

"I don't like the goals," Maurice said. "We lost a draw [in Game 3]. Maybe it wasn't some coverage around our net [on Friday]."

While this development is disturbing to the Jets coach, Maurice was irate about a first-period retaliatory penalty from Scheifele after a missed cross-check from Vegas defenceman Brayden McNabb on Scheifele.

The ensuing Golden Knights power play resulted in a William Karlsson goal.

"Heavy, heavy profanity," Maurice said. "Offensive. Would probably cost you your job."

Winnipeg Jets head coach talks to media after 3-2 loss to Vegas Golden Knights. 0:54

Maurice isn't going to lose his job for losing the West final. But if the Jets are going to beat Fleury for three wins in a row, he'll need the best coaching of his career to pull out this series.

Grounded: Pensioner faces €10k fine after he chugged 2 bottles of wine and set off aircraft alarm https://briefnews.eu/grounded-pensioner-faces-e10k-fine-after-he-chugged-2-bottles-of-wine-and-set-off-aircraft-alarm/ https://briefnews.eu/grounded-pensioner-faces-e10k-fine-after-he-chugged-2-bottles-of-wine-and-set-off-aircraft-alarm/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 20:10:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/grounded-pensioner-faces-e10k-fine-after-he-chugged-2-bottles-of-wine-and-set-off-aircraft-alarm/ Airport security is a drag, especially if you forget liquids are banned and put two bottles of wine in your carry-on. That’s what happened to a pensioner who ended up chugging both bottles, getting so drunk that he couldn’t fly.

The 67-year-old German citizen intended to give the two bottles of fine wine to the people who would be hosting him in Thailand. However, instead of wrapping them up safely and putting them in his checked luggage, he stored the bottles in his carry-on bag.

Of course, that was a problem since liquids over 100ml are banned in airplane cabins. Security officials at Frankfurt airport informed him he would have to get rid of the wine.

Realizing that he couldn’t possibly let fine wine go to waste, the pensioner did the only thing any self-respecting vino lover would do – he chugged both bottles before heading back towards security.
The man, obviously inebriated, somehow managed to make it to his gate and board the aircraft. However, things went downhill from there.

Once he was in the cabin, he pushed an emergency button which opened a locked door. Airport officials had to prevent him from walking onto the tarmac – doing so is considered unauthorized entry and constitutes an offense. They then called the Federal Police, and officers arrived to find that the pensioner appeared uncooperative.

The man was kept in the airport to sober up. When that finally happened, about three hours later, officials who accompanied him to the airport’s exit informed him that getting home to his town in Baden-Württemberg would cost €150 (US$ 185).
However, he seemed resigned to having to go home with much lighter pockets. “I have already mucked up so much money today that taxi fares no longer play a role,” he told officials, according to the Federal Police. That does appear to be the case, as authorities say the man now faces a fine of up to €10,000 ($ 12,329) for his shenanigans.

Pilots REFUSE to fly rejected asylum seekers back to Afghanistan – 200 flights grounded https://briefnews.eu/pilots-refuse-to-fly-rejected-asylum-seekers-back-to-afghanistan-200-flights-grounded/ https://briefnews.eu/pilots-refuse-to-fly-rejected-asylum-seekers-back-to-afghanistan-200-flights-grounded/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2017 15:04:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pilots-refuse-to-fly-rejected-asylum-seekers-back-to-afghanistan-200-flights-grounded/

German pilots have grounded over 200 flights after refusing to be part of the deportation of failed asylum-seekers.

The government stated 222 planned flights were stopped by pilots who reportedly wanted no part in the controversial return of refugees to Afghanistan.

Between January and September 222 flights were cancelled with 140 of those at Frankfurt airport.

Local media report 85 of the disrupted flights were on Lufthansa and its subsidiary, Eurowings: Express.co.uk has contacted the airline for comment.

Forty of the flights were due to take off from Dusseldorf airport – a place famed for protesters on the tarmac.

Since the news of the pilots’ refusal to fly, Twitter has been awash with varying opinions.

AC Budabin said: “Ay grounding their flights, they ground unfair asylum processes to a halt: German pilots as #upstanders choosing to #welcomerefugees as challenge to deportations of failed asylum-seekers.”

And Monish Bhatia added: “German pilots ground 222 flights and REFUSE to #deport refuge seekers #Resistance #Humanity #AntiRacism Can we hope that British pilots will do the same @BALPApilots ?”

Jez added: “So now it’s pilots and not the German judicial system that decides who has the right to stay or not.

“Why do some people think they have the right to block or disrupt the carrying out of a legal decision just because they don’t like it. World’s gone mad!”

The latest data from the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF) reveals Germany has accepted nearly 170,000 asylum requests, and rejected about 210,000 – QZ.com reports.

A blanket ban on deportations back to Afghanistan was imposed in August 2015, but last year the EU agreed with the Afghan government to start deporting failed asylum seekers back to “safe areas” in Afghanistan.

Back in October, Amnesty International told  European governments planning to deport asylum seekers back to Afghanistan were putting nearly 10,000 people at risk of death.

The organisation believes “no part of Afghanistan is safe, they are putting people at risk of torture, kidnapping, death and other horrors.”

Anna Shea, Amnesty International’s Researcher on Refugee and Migrant Rights, told Amnesty.org: “In their determination to increase the number of deportations, European governments are implementing a policy that is reckless and unlawful.

“Wilfully blind to the evidence that violence is at a record high and no part of Afghanistan is safe, they are putting people at risk of torture, kidnapping, death and other horrors.”

Despite this, in order to reduce the number of appeals and speed up deportations, the German government has proposed bringing in a new asylum program to begin in February 2018.

It will see rejected asylum seekers given 3,000 euros as an incentive to accept deportation.

Google Maps Street View reveals grounded 'UFO’ hidden in a forest sparking ALIEN fears https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-reveals-grounded-ufo-hidden-in-a-forest-sparking-alien-fears/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-reveals-grounded-ufo-hidden-in-a-forest-sparking-alien-fears/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 20:48:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-reveals-grounded-ufo-hidden-in-a-forest-sparking-alien-fears/

Google Maps has often convinced UFO enthusiasts that the signs of extraterrestrial activity are hidden around the world.

A landing site in Poland was believed to have been an alien landing site until it was revealed as a man-made building.

Eagle-eyed viewers have since spotted what appears to be a grounded UFO hidden in a forest of Romania, just outside Timisoara.

Many think it could be the sign of alien activity.

The “UFO” appears to be hidden in the trees outside of the city in a deserted part of the city.

It shows a circular disc with holes that are synonymous with how UFO’s are imagined to look.

Sadly, on closer inspection it appears to be a simple water tower instead of a vehicle from outer space.

This didn’t deter online users from poking fun.

One reviewed it on Google writing: “Amazing. Its Real, Been There And Seen It.”

It has since been called Alien UFO Resort on the destination on Google Maps.

Another review didn’t see the funny side and explained: “It is just a water filtering facility built in the architectural style of Wiener Secession.”

Another sighting of a UFO has previously been spotted in Australia.

An old triangle was spotted between Badgingarra National Park and Wongonderrah Nature Reserve in the middle of a field.

Dotted with lights, it was labelled “Black Triangle” on Google Maps and had an eery glow.

The triangle has since disappeared and is now called “The Hidden Triangle” as users think Google is trying to hide it

They wrote: “No use trying to hide the evidence.”

Ryanair has released a list of all the flights that have been cancelled in the days leading to Wednesday September 20.

The budget airline revealed late last week that it would be canceling between 40 and 50 flights per day for the next six weeks.

Up to 400,000 passengers flying with Ryanair are set to be affected up until the end of October.

The airline says the move is to “improve its system-wide punctuality” after a sharp decrease in flights arriving on time in recent weeks.

Ryanair said in a statement: “Ryanair announced that it would cancel 40-50 flights daily for the next six weeks, to the end of October, to improve its system-wide punctuality which has fallen below 80 per cent in the first two weeks of September.

Ryanair cancelled flights list: London Stansted is the worst hit airport

Ryanair apologises sincerely for the inconvenience caused to customers by these flight cancellations

“This has happened through a combination of ATC capacity delays and strikes, weather disruptions and the impact of increased holiday allocations to pilots and cabin crew as the airline moves to allocate annual leave during a nine month transition period.

“Ryanair apologises sincerely for the inconvenience caused to customers by these cancellations.”

Last night Ryanair revealed a full list of all flights that have been cancelled up until Wednesday.

There were over 160 flights cancelled at the weekend and a total of 164 have been cancelled over the next three days.

London Stansted is easily the worst hit airport, with 33 grounded flights over the next three days.

Today will see 11 cancelled departure flights, tomorrow nine and Wednesday 13.

Other airports with multiple cancelled flights include Barcelona, Dublin, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan and Porto.

Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “Flights are operating as scheduled unless an email confirming a cancellation has been received.

“We advise customers to check the email address used to make their booking.

“Cancellation notices for flights cancelled up to and including Wednesday 20 September have been sent to affected customers and posted on the Ryanair.com website.

Ryanair cancelled flights list: There are 164 grounded flights in the next three days

“We will continue to send regular updates and post flight information on our website, with the next set of cancellations to be issued on Monday.”

Passengers who have had their flights cancelled in this list could be eligible for flight compensation, in addition to a refund or rerouting service provided by Ryanair.

Airlines must provide at least two weeks notice of flight cancellations under non-extraordinary circumstances, in order to avoid paying compensation.

Eligible travellers can claim up to €250 for distances up to 1,500km, which rises to €600 for longer flights.

Hannah Maundrell, Editor in Chief of money.co.uk said: “It’s so disappointing for Ryanair passengers whose flights have been cancelled especially at such late notice. Ryanair have really messed up here, but you shouldn’t be left out of pocket.

Ryanair cancelled flights list London StanstedGETTY

Ryanair cancelled flights list: There are 33 grounded flights at Stansted over the next three days

“If your flight has been cancelled, ask for a refund. You should get your money back within 7 days or given an alternative flight. This should also apply to connecting flights you miss as a result, as long as they were booked together.

“If your flight is delayed by over 2 hours you should be able to get food and drink covered at the airport and accommodation if you need to stay overnight.

“Generally if your flight is delayed by over 3 hours you can claim compensation for the inconvenience. Cancellation amounts vary from 250 euros to 600 euros depending on your flight.

“If your other travel plans are impacted, look to your travel insurance for cover. This is when having a decent policy can really come in handy.”
