Hundreds of Romanian people donned their finest genuine bearskin and red tassels as they grunted and swayed their way through a bizarre parade as part of a traditional New Year’s celebration.

Known as the ‘bear dance’, people swayed to the rhythm of drums and melodies of pan flutes through the streets of Comanesti, eastern Romania, on Sunday.

According to folklore, the ritual originated in pre-Christian times when villagers would wear animal furs and colored costumes, moving from house to house to ward off evil spirits as they entered the new year.

“I’ve been doing the bear dance for four years, and for me it means a great deal,” said a 17-year-old participant, Roxana Stan, who got her costume from her father.

“It is very heavy, but I’ve got used to it. I already can’t feel its weight anymore,” she added.

A Himalayan bear, apparently fed up with its pictures being taken by an automated camera in a Russian national park, ended up dismantling the rig and ripping out its memory card.

The Himalayan black bear was recorded by two camera traps in the “Land of the Leopard” national park in Russia’s Far East. It walked between them, seemingly undecided which one it liked more (or less). It then picked one, placed it on a tree trunk, and started messing with it, until the recording broke off.

The park staff were later able to retrace what happened. Being curious like most of its species, the Himalayan bear tried to rip the camera off the tree with its paws, and when that failed, tried to use its teeth. It happens once a while, the park’s website said.

This time, however, the bear turned out to be tech-savvy to boot. For the first time ever, it managed to partially eject the camera’s memory card with all the footage it had filmed. (Probably the bear wanted it to show the cubs for his home video collection.)

Matthew Inman has a considerable audience with his webcomic The Oatmeal, and he’s put those masses to use with projects such as his Exploding Kittens card game, or to raise money for a museum dedicated to Nikola Tesla. This weekend, he launched a new campaign to help convince the National Parks service to consider a particular course of action for a grizzly bear reintroduction campaign in the North Cascades National Park.

In a new comic, Inman noted that he partnered with a pair of nonprofits that will help make the project a reality: $ 25,000, and 50,000 comments directed to the Department of the Interior. He’s already donated the money, and uses the comic to encourage people to leave comments in support of Alternative C, Incremental Restoration, helpfully providing a block of text for supporters to copy and paste onto the website.

This Spring, the National Parks Service put together the draft proposal to figure out how to best restore the region’s grizzly bear populations, which has been reduced due to habitat loss and forest fragmentation. According to the report, the region doesn’t presently have a sustainable population. There’s four courses of action detailed in the plan. Alternative A, mandates no action. Alternative B would implement an “Ecosystem Evaluation Restoration” plan where 10 grizzly bears would be captured and released in the area. Alternative C, which Inman advocates for, is an incremental restoration plan that would release 5-7 bears in 5-10 years. Finally, Alternative D is an expedited restoration plan that would see the release of bears in the area until such time that their restoration goals are reached. The 325-page plan goes into detail about the impact of reintroducing the animals, as well as the costs and scientific rationale.

Inman points out that the comment period is finite, and attached a ticking clock to the bottom of the campaign — just over two days as of right now. There’s no word on exactly how many comments the National Parks Service has received because of Inman’s comic, but if past campaigns are any indication, he’s likely directed some traffic to the site.

Boswell survived by grabbing the grizzly’s face, prying open its jaws and screaming until the bear ran back into the woods

Two British ice climbers have narrowly escaped an encounter with a grizzly bear in Canada’s Banff National Park.

Greg Boswell and Nick Bullock were climbing Mount Wilson on Nov. 29 when the bear began chasing Boswell.

Bullock has since written about the encounter on his blog:

I spun to watch Greg sprint past me and in hot pursuit was a Grizzly. The bear bounded, pulling and pushing the snow with powerful legs. The snow lapped its belly and didn�™t appear to slow it. Greg ran out of sight and the carnivorous freight train passed me, snorting and growling and bounding, dusting me with spindrift �“ it looked at me for a second, and for a second I thought this is it, this is really fucking it, but in that second the bear had spotted Greg had fallen.

Fortunately for both Boswell and Bullock, Greg Boswell and Mick Fanning must have went to the same survival summer camp:

it bit straight though his brand new boot as if it were a carpet slipper. It lunged once more and crunched into his shin, placing a paw on his other leg before lifting him off the ground. I�™m not sure at this point what other people would do, but Boswell is Boswell and the bear just didn�™t appreciate this, he grabbed the bear�™s mouth and prized apart the jaws, pushing, and screaming.
