Murphy Brown tackled the #MeToo movement this week, as Murphy was rocked by a painful memory from her distant past.

Murphy Brown Episode 3 Sexual HarassmentMurphy’s TV show has to complete a mandatory sexual harassment seminar, which everyone groans about — except Pat, who’s excited to participate. (“Today, I am a man!”) Murphy blows off the dire warnings from the seminar’s leader — “The show’s called Murphy in the Morning! They’re not firing me!” — until the guy reminds her about Matt Lauer… and Charlie Rose… and Bill O’Reilly. But even when Corky remembers the many, many times she was harassed, Murphy insists she was never victimized like that: “What guy would be stupid enough to try something with me?”

It turns out, though, there was a guy who was stupid enough. At home with Avery, Murphy admits she had a professor in college who took a liking to her. After she won a prestigious college journalism award, he invited her back to his place to celebrate: “I assumed there would be other people. There weren’t.” She’ll only say that “something happened,” and she’s left that memory buried deep in a mental drawer ever since. But after a confessional chat with bartender Phyllis, she realizes she still has unresolved feelings about that encounter — and decides to resolve them.

So she tracks down her old professor — played by veteran character actor Harris Yulin (Ozark, 24) — to see if he remembers the night like she does. He still has her college award on display… and he’s taken another cute young “assistant” under his wing. (Murphy hands her a business card, in case she wants a less degrading career path.) Murphy reminds him how he pinned her down that night and forced her to push him away, but he brushes her off as “a great storyteller.” He even tries to take credit for inspiring her stellar career, but Murphy scoffs at that: “I accomplished everything in spite of you, you weak, miserable excuse for a man!” He clearly hasn’t learned his lesson, and never will, but Murphy gets her revenge anyway: She takes back the award she left at his house that fateful night, as a symbol of all she’s accomplished… on her own.

Elsewhere in “#MurphyToo”: Frank gets burned (literally) by a new app Pat developed that zaps him every time he says something inappropriate; Miles restrains himself from pursuing a romance with a young researcher on staff… until she takes another job; and Miguel ducks anytime someone in the bar asks for “ice.” (Groan.)

They returned 6.5% on average, according to Hedge Fund Research, a data provider, their best year since 2013.

But those returns do not really suggest that they are masters of the investing universe. The S&P 500 index, America’s main equity benchmark, returned 21.8%, including dividends, last year. More tellingly, a portfolio split 60-40 between the S&P 500 and a mixture of government and corporate bonds (an oft-used benchmark for institutional portfolios) would have returned 14.8%. Last year was the fifth in a row when hedge funds underperformed the 60/40 split (see chart).


That ought to be a salutary lesson for those institutions who think that backing hedge funds is the answer to their prayers. Despite the highs recorded by stockmarkets, many employers are struggling to fund their final-salary pension promises. Israel’s intelligence minister has encouraged Iranian anti-government demonstrators, saying many threats to the Jewish state will disappear if they prevail. The remark came as violent unrest snowballs across the country.

“I can only wish success to the Iranian people in the struggle for freedom and democracy,” Intelligence Minister Israel Katz told Israeli Army Radio on Monday, as cited by Reuters.

The intelligence minister added: “If the people succeed in achieving freedom and democracy, many of the threats on Israel and the entire region today will disappear.”

Katz also said that Iran’s “murderous regime” will eventually cease to exist. “The chief of staff of the Iranian army said the State of Israel will not exist in 25 years, I say to him – the State of Israel will exist forever, but you and your colleagues in the murderous regime will disappear long before,” Katz said, according to the Times of Israel.

In Iran, social unrest continues to grip the country, sweeping across several cities, including the capital, Tehran. Protests broke out last Thursday with people flocking to the streets to express their discontent over rising food prices, unemployment, and poor economic prospects.

The anti-government protests were countered by massive pro-government demonstrations. Protests in support of the government were held in around 1,200 cities and towns across Iran, including Tehran and the second most populous city, Mashhad.

The massiver rallies snowballed into the biggest unrest in eight years, since the infamous 2009 protests in which people, encouraged by the anti-government ‘Green Movement,’ demonstrated against the Iranian president and the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said: “People are absolutely free to criticize the government,” adding that protests should be geared towards improving the situation in the country, and not the other way around.

“Criticism is different from violence and damaging public properties,” Rouhani said. He also stated that solving Iran’s current problems “would take time,” and that the people and government should help each other in overcoming the difficulties.

North America is currently experiencing a particularly severe and protracted cold snap resulting in major car accidents, a state of emergency, sharks freezing to death and even now Niagara Falls is experiencing the Arctic blast.

The waters of the majestic falls themselves has yet to succumb to the polar winds, but the surrounding area has been transformed into a winter wonderland as temperatures plummet across Canada and the US, dropping to -34 degrees Fahrenheit in parts and dropping further to -89 degrees (-67 Celsius) when windchill is factored in.

The weather has wreaked havoc on US roads, with Michigan alone reporting up to 30 crashes due to the recent icy conditions, including a major pile-up involving at least 40 vehicles reports WGN.  

An 83-year old woman died of exposure in South Dakota after her car broke down and she went to search for help. Three people also died in Lake Eerie after their car slid off an icy road into a canal reports the LA Times.

Polar winds from the Arctic are being blamed for the precipitous drop in temperatures over the past week.

Residents from as far south as Tennessee and South Carolina all the way to Maine in the northeastern US have been warned to exercise extreme caution during the big freeze. Maine Governor Paul LePage declared a state of emergency to allow heating oil providers to work beyond federal limits to ensure residents stay warm.  

In North Dakota, typically among the coldest states in the US each year, temperatures are expected to plunge to -30 F (-34.4 C) Saturday with a wind chill of about -50 F (-45.5 C) according to meteorologist Ken Simosko, as cited by The Mirror.

Even marine life is falling victim to the extreme cold with sharks reportedly dying from shock due to the drop in temperature.
