Giggling at the unique pastime, Bradley asked how many bees Andrew tended to.

“Tends to be about 50,000 in summer,” Andrew said. “And 1,000 in the winter – they die off.”

Bradley went on to quiz Andrew on his plans for the money and it turned out bees were still on the player’s mind.

“I would like to buy another two hives, but my wife has it earmarked for something else.”

‘Get a grip!’ Dr Hilary Jones warns of ‘really worrying’ risk of UK second COVID-19 wave https://briefnews.eu/get-a-grip-dr-hilary-jones-warns-of-really-worrying-risk-of-uk-second-covid-19-wave/ https://briefnews.eu/get-a-grip-dr-hilary-jones-warns-of-really-worrying-risk-of-uk-second-covid-19-wave/#respond Mon, 14 Sep 2020 07:18:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/get-a-grip-dr-hilary-jones-warns-of-really-worrying-risk-of-uk-second-covid-19-wave/

Speaking to ITV Good Morning Britain viewers, Dr Hilary Jones stressed the more people Britons get in contact with, the higher the risk of spreading coronavirus as he urged everyone to follow the rule of six. He admitted the maximum number of people Britons will be able to meet from Monday was an “arbitrary” figure decided on modelling more than data, but urged everyone to “get a grip”.

He said: “We’re seeing a rise in cases, over 3,000 again three days on the trot.

“We’re seeing an increase in hospitalisations and nine deaths in the UK. It may not sound much now but when you see a rise in cases you will see inevitably a rise in hospitalisations.

“We’re also seeing a rise in the number of cases in care homes which is really worrying.

“These are the people who are most vulnerable.

“I think there’s been about 1,000 cases in care homes around the country. So we need to get a grip on this.

“We need to make sure people understand why social distancing is so important. The rule of six is easy to understand, six is an arbitrary figure and it’s based on modelling rather than any other signs.

“But the more people that individuals come into contact with, the more the transmission will spread.”

The coronavirus “rule of six” came into force in England on Monday, meaning any social gatherings of more than six people will break the law.

People face fines of up to £3,200 if they do not abide by the new measure, which applies to both indoor and outdoor settings and follows a rapid increase in the number of daily positive cases.

Regulations enabling the enforcement of the rule were published late on Sunday night, around 30 minutes before they came into effect.

More than 3,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded in the UK for the third day in a row on Sunday – the first time since May that cases were above 3,000 on three consecutive days.

The new law comes amid concerns about an increase in cases in care homes and growing criticism of the NHS Test and Trace system.

Aside from limited exemptions including work and education, police will be able to disperse gatherings of more than six people and issue fines ranging from £100 to £3,200.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist, who leads the Metropolitan Police’s response to coronavirus, said officers will be deployed in every borough to patrol public spaces and respond swiftly to incidents where groups gather in large numbers.

“Where people just won’t listen, and are putting everyone at risk, we absolutely will take enforcement action,” he said.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the recent rise in cases “makes it clear that more needs to be done to stop the spread of this disease”.

The rule applies across England and replaces the existing ban on participating in gatherings of more than 30 and the current guidance on allowing two households to meet indoors.

Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council Martin Hewitt has urged the public to “stick to the limits”.

He said: “Preventing the spread of coronavirus is a shared effort and police are playing our part alongside Government, businesses, hospitality owners, local authorities and others.

“Officers are in their communities following our approach to engage, explain and encourage people to follow the rules. We will issue fines when people refuse to comply.

“The demands on the police service are now at similar levels to before the pandemic, which makes it crucially important that we all take personal responsibility, stick to the limits and prevent the spread of this deadly virus.”

Meanwhile, a survey suggests a second peak is the number one concern among medics who want to avoid a return to the “horror and tragedy” of the pandemic’s early days.

The British Medical Association (BMA) poll found that 86 percent of more than 8,000 doctors and medical students in England said that a second peak was likely or very likely in the next six months.

King Kohli losing grip on batting dominance https://briefnews.eu/king-kohli-losing-grip-on-batting-dominance/ https://briefnews.eu/king-kohli-losing-grip-on-batting-dominance/#respond Wed, 12 Dec 2018 04:16:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/king-kohli-losing-grip-on-batting-dominance/ Indian skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of losing top spot in the ICC Test batting rankings.

His side may hold a crucial early lead in their Test series against Australia, after an excellent win in the first Test in Adelaide, but Kohli could only manage three in the first innings and 34 in the second.

The low scoring Test by Kohli’s lofty standards sees his lead in the ICC Test batting rankings reduced to seven, after they were released on Tuesday.

The master batsmen has held the lead since the Test against England in Edgbaston earlier this year, but is now in danger of conceding top spot to New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, according to cricket.com.au.

Williamson dominated in his most recent Test against Pakistan, with scores of 89 and 139 in Abu Dhabi, to lead the Kiwis to a drought breaking series victory in Asia.

New Zealand had not won a Test series against an Asian nation in almost 50 years.

Arguably already the Kiwis’ best ever batsmen, Williamson averages 63.75 from five matches with two hundreds this year compared to Kohli’s average of 55 from 11 matches with four hundreds in 2018.

Williamson moved passed sidelined former Australian skipper Steve Smith into second and in doing so became the first New Zealand batsmen to crack the 900-point barrier.

If Kohli fails twice in the Perth Test match against Australia, which starts on Friday, Williamson could supersede him as statistically the best batsmen in the game.

Kohli’s countryman Cheteshwar Pujara climbed two spots and into fourth after his excellent knocks of 123 and 71 in Adelaide.

England skipper Joe Root rounds out the top five, with another suspended Australian David Warner dropping to sixth.

In the bowling department Ravi Ashwin, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc all moved places following the first Test.

Ashwin moved up to sixth and bumped Cummins down to seventh, after his six wicket haul against Australia, while Starc’s five wickets saw him rise two places to 16th.

In light of the $ 5 billion EU antitrust ruling against Google this week, we started noticing a certain classic Ars story circulating around social media. Google’s methods of controlling the open source Android code and discouraging Android forks is exactly the kind of behavior the EU has a problem with, and many of the techniques outlined in this 2013 article are still in use today.

The idea of a sequel to this piece has come up a few times, but Google’s Android strategy of an open source base paired with key proprietary apps and services hasn’t really changed in the last five or so years. There have been updates to Google’s proprietary apps so that they look different from the screenshots in this article, but the base strategy outlined here is still very relevant. So in light of the latest EU development, we’re resurfacing this story for the weekend. It first ran on October 20, 2013 and appears largely unchanged—but we did toss in a few “In 2018” updates anywhere they felt particularly relevant.

Six years ago, in November 2007, the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) was announced. The original iPhone came out just a few months earlier, capturing people’s imaginations and ushering in the modern smartphone era. While Google was an app partner for the original iPhone, it could see what a future of unchecked iPhone competition would be like. Vic Gundotra, recalling Andy Rubin’s initial pitch for Android, stated:

He argued that if Google did not act, we faced a Draconian future, a future where one man, one company, one device, one carrier would be our only choice.

Google was terrified that Apple would end up ruling the mobile space. So, to help in the fight against the iPhone at a time when Google had no mobile foothold whatsoever, Android was launched as an open source project.

  • Prime minister Shinzo Abe is losing his grip on power as a cronyism scandal and cover-up gains steam in Japan.
  • The scandal involves a school with ties to Abe’s wife that was given an 85% discount on state-owned land, and a new admission from the finance ministry that related documents were doctored to remove her name.
  • Abe’s support is sliding and a new poll says nearly half of all respondents think Abe should quit.
  • The drama comes as Abe deals with Tokyo’s falling international relevance in discussions with North Korea that directly affect Japan’s national security.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is facing his biggest crisis since coming to power in 2012, with a cronyism scandal and cover-up now gaining steam in Japan.

The scandal involves the sale of state-owned land to a school operator that has ties to Abe’s wife, Akie. The land was sold at a discount of about one-seventh of its value. Before the scandal broke last year, Akie Abe was listed as an honorary principal of the school, which at one point was going to named the “Shinzo Abe Memorial School.”

How Xi Jinping spent a decade cementing his grip on China to become the most powerful leader since Mao https://briefnews.eu/how-xi-jinping-spent-a-decade-cementing-his-grip-on-china-to-become-the-most-powerful-leader-since-mao/ https://briefnews.eu/how-xi-jinping-spent-a-decade-cementing-his-grip-on-china-to-become-the-most-powerful-leader-since-mao/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 08:42:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-xi-jinping-spent-a-decade-cementing-his-grip-on-china-to-become-the-most-powerful-leader-since-mao/ Xi JingpinYouTube/CCTV English

China’s ruling Communist Party proposed this week to eliminate presidential term limits, making it possible for current president Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely.

Without a set limit, Xi will be following in the footsteps of communist China’s founder Mao Zedong, who ruled from 1949-1976, but also oversaw the deaths of tens of millions.

The most impressive aspect of Xi’s leadership — and potentially the most threatening — is his calculated consolidation of power.

As president for the last five years, Xi initiated a corruption crackdown, which jailed some of China’s highest-ranking leaders, and created central leading groups that allow him to bypass regular checks and balances. Xi has effectively gained oversight on almost all aspects of Chinese policy, from military reform to cybersecurity.

He has also increased internet censorship, which is aimed at curbing popular dissent, and implemented the ambitious Belt and Road initiative, China’s global trade and infrastructure plan to link 70 countries.

Xi is coming to the end of his first five-year term and is set to be appointed to a second, and no longer final, term starting March 5.

Here is a look at some key moments that marked Xi’s rise to absolute power.

October 2007: After spending 25 years in various government posts across China, Xi is named to the country’s highest decision-making body, the Politburo Standing Committee.

The Politburo Standing Committee consists of China’s top leaders. While it has collective decision making power on national policy, its decision making process and the issues it debates remain unclear.

Xi joined the committee alongside new members Li Keqiang, the current Premier, He Guoqiang, who quietly retired as Xi was elected, and Zhou Yongkang, who was later jailed under Xi’s corruption sweep.

The new title, and an unofficial rule that would see most of the Standing Committee soon retire, meant Xi was now expected to succeed then-president Hu.

According to a government profile on Xi following his appointment, the leader had “affections for the common folk” and was well-known for “amicability.”

Retired senior officials in Zhejiang, where Xi lived from 2002 to 2007, said he is a “man of action without making shows, an open-minded man with a down-to-earth style of work.”

March 2013: Xi becomes president.

Feng Li/Getty Images

Xi’s accession to president was essentially unchallenged.

Nearly 3,000 carefully vetted communist party members met for the National People’s Congress, and voted for Xi in a rubber stamp ceremony. There was just one “no” vote and three abstentions.

Experts speculate that members of Standing Committee bargain in secret to delegate a president several months before the congress “vote.”

That same year Xi introduced his major global infrastructure initiative, Belt and Road, and created the National Security Commission, which he also chairs.

North Korean ‘ghost ships’ full of dead people are still washing ashore in Japan — and it’s a sign of Kim Jong Un losing his grip https://briefnews.eu/north-korean-ghost-ships-full-of-dead-people-are-still-washing-ashore-in-japan-and-its-a-sign-of-kim-jong-un-losing-his-grip/ https://briefnews.eu/north-korean-ghost-ships-full-of-dead-people-are-still-washing-ashore-in-japan-and-its-a-sign-of-kim-jong-un-losing-his-grip/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 11:54:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/north-korean-ghost-ships-full-of-dead-people-are-still-washing-ashore-in-japan-and-its-a-sign-of-kim-jong-un-losing-his-grip/ japan ghost shipKyodo via Reuters

  • Boats containing dead bodies from North Korea have continued to show up along Japan’s west coast.
  • North Korea usually tightly controls its borders to prevent defections.
  • This suggests that Kim Jong Un is losing his grip over his country’s border security and his citizens’ economic ventures, experts told BI.

The seemingly endless appearances of “ghost ships” full of dead North Koreans on the shores of Japan is indicative of Kim Jong Un’s weakening grip over his citizens, experts say.

The latest took place last week, when a capsized boat containing the decayed remains of seven bodies washed ashore in Kanazawa, a city on Japan’s west coast.

A badge portraying former North Korean leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il was also found nearby.

It was the second such discovery in Japan this month.

The number of ghost ships — vessels discovered with no living crew — reached 104 last year, the highest since authorities started collecting data in 2013, Japan’s Kyodo news agency quoted the national coast guard as saying.

It remains unclear exactly who these people were, or why they showed up in Japan — experts have posited theories including food insecurity in North Korea, annual quotas imposed on fishermen, and a deal for fishing rights between North Korea and China.

A new theory suggested to Business Insider this week is that the increasing arrivals of these boats indicate Kim Jong Un’s weakening grip over his country and its people.

It came from Professor Hazel Smith, a researcher at the School of African and Oriental Studies in London.

North Korea, notoriously, tightly controls its borders to prevent defections. Soldiers opened fire on one of their own who was caught in the act of defecting to South Korea last November.

The army also plants landmines on various spots around its border — including the west coast — to prevent citizens from leaving and invaders from entering.

Smith, who lived in North Korea from 1998 to 2001, told Business Insider:

“Security is disintegrating. There was always an incentive for people to get hold of a boat to try to fish and come back and sell it and make some money, but security was always extremely tight on the coasts.

“You had mined beaches, you had surveillance on the coast, so the fact that this is happening is not a surprise economically — people are taking the opportunities while they can — but what it shows also is the disintegration of the state’s ability to stop people going out in boats.”

She added that previously, obtaining boats was seen as a highly risky issue, and that only people with high security clearance could access them.

“Going to sea in any way was seen as first and foremost a political issue, not an economic issue, because individuals were so controlled,” she said.

north korea boat japanKyodo via Reuters

What’s changed now is the fact that North Korea doesn’t have the “capacity” to control its borders as tightly as before due to other, more pressing concerns — such as the country’s nuclear development and continuous, crippling international sanctions, Smith said.

She said: “They’ve only got the capacity to focus on certain aspects of state activity at a time now. They’re focusing on the nuclear issue, and they don’t have the capacity to focus on every aspect of economic activity, and they don’t have the money to feed people, so they have to let people do their own thing.”

She previously told BI it was “a lot easier” to bypass the country’s security apparatus now than it 20 years ago, because some security officials are willing to turn a blind eye in exchange for profits if someone comes back with a catch.

north korea catfish farmKCNA via Reuters

The sheer number of the boats appearing in recent years also suggests that people were leaving North Korea as part of small enterprises rather than a monolithic state enterprise, another expert observed.

It points to an opening of the North Korean economy, said Benjamin Katzeff Silberstein, an editor at North Korean Economy Watch.

He told BI: “It may tell us something about the extent to which economic activity has been liberalised, but also put under pressure.

“In other words, companies run with relative freedom by individuals may have increased space to operate, but in some cases, they may also receive quotas to fill by the state or other government entities.

“In the case of the ghost ships, while their circumstances aren’t fully known, the pressure to meet quotas could explain why they need to venture further out into the ocean searching for their catch, perhaps not with adequate fuel resources on board.”

Smith added: “It looks like state priorities over vessels have either broken down or been allowed to lapse in order to permit people to go out and find ways to engage in trade to make a bit of money, which is a change.

“It might not be a major change, but it is a change in the way that the government approaches economic activity. It’s less security-focused.”
