Game of Thrones came to a brutal end this year as the final battles for Winterfell and Westeros brought the show’s main characters to their knees. One of the biggest fights was the one which involved both the living, and the dead – the battle against the Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik). However, after much tension and worry, the final blow was eventually made by Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) who snuck up on the warlock and stabbed him. While no one can have any complaints about her actions in that episode, fans on Reddit have been pointing out an apparently annoying fact about the assassin’s actions in previous seasons. The dedicated fan was not happy that Arya previously killed Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen), and then put her weapon away still covered in blood. Redditor eagle332288 recently posted: “Clean your damn blade! “There’s one thing recently that got my attention. The last episode of season 7, Arya slashes Baelish’s throat. Blood everywhere naturally. Those arteries to the head have high pressure! “Still holding her dripping blade, she looks down briefly and puts it nicely back in its sheath with a small sound effect… blood and all.” As if this wasn’t bad enough, the viewer then went on to point out a similar thing occurred with Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) back in season seven. READ MORE: Game of Thrones: Cersei Lannister deleted scene revealed with heartbreaking consequences The fan continued: “Also in season seven, Greyworm DOUBLE KILLS those two masters on the hill while Daenerys is burning the fleet. “Pretty cool. Pretty slick. Just a single move. Mr. Worm takes a step back from his flashy deed, looks down briefly and puts the blade nicely back in its sheath with a small sound effect… blood and all.” Another fan agreed: “That was something that bothered me a handful of times throughout the show.” While another suggested: “We do see Arya cleaning and honing Needle so maybe it is a Valyrian steel thing. Doesn’t explain Greyworm though, he doesn’t have Valyrian steel.” This wasn’t the only blunder of the season, as many people began pointing out a rogue coffee cup during the feast in Winterfell castle. And originally, Sansa Stark star Sophie Turner blamed Emilia Clarke for the hiccup – but she soon changed her mind. Speaking on Conan O’Brien recently, she explained: “The coffee cup was where Kit [Harington’s] chair was. “First I blamed it on Emilia – but I don’t think Emilia would do that. “Kit is lazy, and I think he would have done that. It was in front of Kit’s chair and then obviously he moved and this picture was taken and it looked like it was in my seat, but I wasn’t there.” Game of Thrones is available on digital download now.
“For Grey Worm and Missandei at this point, and I guess for the Unsullied and for the Dothraki as well, there’s a sense they’re going into completely unheard-of territory for them. This is a completely new world,” the actor tells TVLine.
Anderson’s co-star, Joe Dempsie, elaborates. “I don’t imagine the Unsullied and the Dothraki have gone into many battles that they weren’t more or less 100 percent certain they could win,” he says. “That’s what’s different about this one, totally: There’s a lot of people for whom the odds really don’t seem good.”
He’s referring to the heralded Battle of Winterfell, a skirmish between the Night King’s undead army and Daenerys’ assembled forces that will truly get underway in the season’s upcoming third episode. The sequence reportedly required weeks of outdoor night shoots, assembled the most Thrones characters in one place since the series’ 2011 premiere and involved conditions so rough that cast member Iain Glen called filming the installment “the most unpleasant experience I’ve had on Thrones.”
From Episode 3’s preview, it looks like the actors’ fictional alter egos aren’t having a much better time — not that that will dissuade Gendry from jumping into the fight, Dempsie says. Despite the young blacksmith’s lack of war experience and his eve-of-battle romantic interlude with Arya, “He can’t wait. He’s so naive!” he says, laughing.
He adds that Gendry’s trip beyond The Wall near the end of Season 7 made him think he knew the enemy they’re facing, but “I don’t think he quite knows the scale of the army that’s heading south. There is that conflict in Gendry where he knows he wants to be part of something bigger. He knows he wants to be involved int his fight to save humanity.” He chuckles. “Doesn’t mean that he’s not terrified.”
Grey Worm’s greatest fear, Anderson reflects, first surfaced in the Season 7 scene where the soldier and Missandei made love: “He’s scared to die now,” he says. “Attachment can make you super vulnerable… Part of why Grey Worm has always been such an effective fighter is that he is not scared of anything. He’s never been scared of anything.”
And now? “He’s got somebody to fight for,” Anderson says.

His father, Hugh Campbell, led the Edmonton Eskimos to the championship in 1978. That win was the first of five consecutive Grey Cup wins by the Hugh Campbell-coached Eskimos.
On Sunday afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium, Rick will try and do something his father was never able to do despite all those wins — capture the title in the Alberta capital inside the stadium Hugh won so many regular season and playoff battles.
"This is a special place to me and a big part of my growing up," Rick said. "It is a big deal to me. I think I'm just trying to keep my emotions in check so I can do my best job for the team."
Rick Campbell had been around the CFL in various coaching roles in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary before landing a head coaching position in Ottawa the year they returned to the league. In five seasons as the Ottawa Redblacks coach, Campbell has led the team to three Grey Cup games. They won it all against the Stampeders in 2016.
But unlike the previous two championship games Rick coached, this time his father is going to be at the stadium for the game.
Hugh Campbell led Edmonton to 5 straight Grey Cup wins:
"They haven't come to the previous two games I was the head coach in the Grey Cup," Rick said. "They kind of gave me my space. So it's going to be pretty cool. I think my sisters are coming too."
Despite all of the connections to the city he grew up in and trips down memory lane, Rick is trying to stay as grounded and focused as he possibly can before entering the biggest game of the season.
"We haven't gone over to the stadium yet because we're practicing at a different facility. I think it's going to be a bigger thing for me when I reflect back on it afterward. I think I'm in work mode, where I'm trying to keep my head down and go about my business."
Rick first started playing football at Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton. He recalls winning a provincial title with the Titans. Rick played nearly every position on the field.
He was born into a championship football family. His father Hugh won his first Grey Cup championship as a receiver with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1966. Then Hugh coached the Eskimos to all those Grey Cup wins.
Rick says growing up in Edmonton during the 1980s was an incredible thing, mostly because the pro teams were winning a bunch of championships.
"I just remember the Eskimos and the Oilers got really good. People were shocked when they didn't win the whole thing," Rick said.

"This town is pretty special when you think about having two pro sports teams be that good for that long. I just remember the expectations were through the roof."
It would be a tall task to follow in the footsteps of a father who coached a team to five titles in a row, and Rick is the first to admit that early on in his career it was a nice last name to have when applying for jobs.
"I'm sure it helped initially," Rick said. "The thing about football though is you can't fake it. No matter who you are as a player or coach, if you're not a contributor it doesn't matter who you are."
Some have drawn uncanny parallels between the two — Hugh and Rick described as being cool, calm and collected under pressure on the sidelines. But for as similar as they are, Rick is trying his best to do things his way.
"I even have a similar voice to my dad, but I'm just trying to be myself. I don't try to emulate him. I just have to be myself. I guess I could come off as laid back like him but definitely not in the inside."
Rick Campbell was always a western Canadian kind of guy. He grew up in Edmonton, coached in the West throughout much of his career — he admits to knowing very little about Ottawa before taking the coaching position there five years ago.
"I went to Ottawa not knowing much about it," Rick said. "I just knew when I saw the ownership group going through all the hurdles and making sure they got it right, I wanted to be a part of it."
Rick lives a walk away from TD Place Stadium. He's a big part of the community now. More than anything, Rick Campbell is trying to create somewhat of a football dynasty in Ottawa. Just like his father Hugh did in Edmonton. He'll attempt to take a step closer to that on Sunday in the city where it all started with his dad watching from the stands.
"I'm a lucky guy and I don't take any of this for granted," Rick said.
]]>OK, here's what you need to know right now from the world of sports:
The CFL championship game kicks off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET in Edmonton. Whether you're an avid fan or you just got invited to a Grey Cup party and want to feel in the loop, here are some basics to get you set for the game:
Calgary is the favourite. But that hasn't helped them the last two years. Bookies have the Stampeders favoured by four points over the Ottawa Redblacks. So, if you bet on Calgary using the point spread, they have to win by five in order for you to collect. If your money's on Ottawa, they can win the game outright or lose by up to three points (if Calgary wins by four, everybody gets their money back). The Stamps hope the third time's a charm — they were also favoured to beat Toronto last year and Ottawa the year before, and they were upset both times.
The Stampeders have the CFL's top player. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell won the Most Outstanding Player award after throwing for a league-best 35 touchdowns in the regular season. He also won it in 2016.
But the Redblacks have the top Canadian. Receiver Brad Sinopoli won his second outstanding Canadian award after making 116 catches — the most ever in a single season by a player from north of the border.
And Ottawa also has the best feel-good story. Kicker Lewis Ward was named the CFL's top rookie and special-teams player. He made an astounding 51 of his 52 field-goal tries (that's a league-record 98.1 per cent) and enjoyed a streak of 48 (!) straight regular-season makes. All that by a guy who was on the sidelines for last year's Grey Cup game… working as a security guard.
The Redblacks dodged a bullet, too. Ottawa will be glad to have Jonathan Rose on the field to help contain Mitchell and the Calgary offence. The star defensive back was suspended earlier this week for one game for shoving an official during the East final. But his appeal won't be heard before Sunday's game, so he'll play. Rose is great at creating turnovers — he tied for the league lead this year in both interceptions and forced fumbles.
The halftime act is Canadian singer Alessia Cara. If you don't know her, you've probably heard her songs Here and Scars To Your Beautiful. They're on the radio a lot. Canadian country artist Brett Kissel is doing the national anthem.

We're going to find out the name of the potential Halifax CFL team tonight. It'll be either Atlantic Schooners or Atlantic Storm, according to the businessman trying to land an expansion franchise. Anthony LeBlanc and his group have submitted a stadium proposal to Halifax Regional Council. They want public money to help pay for their proposed 24,000-seat venue, which they say could cost up to $ 190 million. If a deal can be made, there's a very good chance Halifax gets a team. CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie is pushing for one in the Atlantic region. "I really want a franchise there," he told CBC Sports' Devin Heroux.
Erik Guay will race one last time. Updating a story from yesterday, it turns out the standout Canadian alpine skier plans to compete once more this weekend before retiring. At publish time yesterday we were under the impression that Guay had decided to walk away effective immediately. But the 25-time World Cup podium finisher (that's a Canadian record) will make Sunday's super-G at Lake Louise, Alta., his farewell race. You can stream it live on CBCSports.ca at 2 p.m. ET or watch it on TV on CBC's Road to the Olympic Games show at 3 p.m. local time.
The weekend is here. That means a lot of sports. This is what you should watch:
Friday
Golf — The Tiger vs. Phil match (3 p.m. ET). But only if you don't have to pay for it. A made-for-TV, match-play showdown between the two biggest golfers of their generation? Solid idea. Putting it on pay-per-view and charging $ 20 for it? That's where you lose me. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are playing for $ 9 million — the winner gets it all, though both guys have a hand in staging the event, so it's hard to believe the loser actually walks away with nothing — and they've also agreed to a $ 200K side bet on the first hole. This could be fun, but it also feels like it's happening — like the past-due Mayweather-Pacquiao fight a few years back — 10 years too late.
Saturday
U.S. college football — Michigan vs. Ohio State (noon ET). Both teams are ranked in the top 10 heading into this year's renewal of one of the most bitter rivalries in sports. Michigan (ranked No. 4) is the betting favourite despite being on the road. But the Wolverines have lost 13 of their last 14 meetings with the Buckeyes. This is the regular-season finale for a pair of schools eyeing a spot in the four-team playoff for the national championship.
Canadian college football — Vanier Cup (1 p.m. ET). If you like your college ball in three-down form, flip over to this clash of the top two Canadian programs — Western and Laval. It's a rematch of last year's title game, which Western won 39-17 to claim its seventh national championship. This one, though, is being held in Laval's backyard in Quebec City. The Rouge et Or are looking to pad their all-time lead by winning their 10th Vanier Cup.
Sunday
The 106th Grey Cup (6 p.m. ET). We pretty much covered this up above, so I'll just give you my gambling pick: I like the Stamps to avoid their third consecutive loss in the title game (getting close to Buffalo Bills territory there) and do it in convincing-enough fashion. I'll lay the four points and take Calgary.

]]>The last two seasons have gone according to plan for the mighty Stamps until the championship game.
They were the heavy favourites two years ago against Ottawa only to lose to Henry Burris and the Redblacks in overtime.
They were heavy favourites last year against Toronto only to lose to Ricky Ray and the Argos in a nail-biter — who can forget that goal line fumble by the Stamps?
To say it has been repeat disappointments for the Stampeders is an understatement as they were just a few plays away from being back-to-back Grey Cup champions.
How is it, then, that a team could find the composure to get back to the Grey Cup, after devastation the last two years?
Perhaps the motivation to right the wrongs of the past was enough to spur these Stamps onto Edmonton for another shot at glory.
Now quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps are heading back to the Grey Cup in a rematch of the 2016 game Calgary lost to the Redblacks. It's a chance at ultimate redemption.
The 22-14 win on Sunday over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was somewhat underwhelming. At times it slowed to a defensive halt.
But with about six minutes left in the game and Calgary leading 14-11, Mitchell orchestrated a drive to put the game out of reach.
Mitchell wasn't spectacular throughout the game, going 17 for 31 passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns. But with the game on the line he marched Calgary down the field with a seven-play 74-yard touchdown drive capped by a brilliant pass and catch to Eric Rogers in the end zone.

That put Calgary up by 10 points with just a little more than three minutes left in the game, a deficit the Bombers could never overcome.
Many have speculated this could be Mitchell's last game at McMahon Stadium as he may head south with NFL aspirations. If it was, it was vintage Mitchell — finding a way to win.
This now marks the fourth time Mitchell will enter the Grey Cup game as a starter. He won his first start, only to lose the last two. Now he'll hope to lead Calgary to another championship.
This is now the fourth time in the last five years the Stampeders are heading to the Grey Cup.
They won it all against Hamilton in 2014. But their last two meltdowns in the title game have been well-documented.
The West trophy presentation celebrations in the south end zone of McMahon Stadium after the game Sunday couldn't have been more subdued and reserved — it was as if the Stampeders wanted no part of what seems to have become somewhat routine to them all. They want the big prize.
Calgary's head coach Dave Dickenson could barely look at the trophy.
He quickly shuffled it along to his players before being asked to share a few words over the loud speakers inside the stadium.
"A lot of Canada is tired of seeing the Stampeders in the Grey Cup but tough luck, we're bringing our team to Edmonton," Dickenson said. "We have great fans and a great city. The city is looking for something like this."

Who knew that Fifty Shades of Grey would inspire more than just seething hot takes and a middling movie trilogy?
The erotic book series by E.L. James was the guilty pleasure for many a real-life book club, and now — astonishingly — it will serve as the springboard for a lusty mom rom-com starring Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen. The definitive actresses of their generation are starring in the aptly titled Book Club.
Fonda, Keaton, Bergen, and Steenburgen play four friends who decide to spice up their dull book club with Fifty Shades of Grey.
“We started this club to stimulate our minds,” a resistant Bergen argues.
“From what I hear, this book is quite stimulating,” Fonda’s character winks back.
What follows is a cheeky montage of the four women blushingly reading the book, which inspires them to spice up their own sex lives. Steenburgen tries to introduce a little BDSM into her humdrum life with her husband (Craig T. Nelson). The single Bergen and Keaton try to get back into the dating game, eventually hooking up with Richard Dreyfuss and Andy Garcia, respectively. And Fonda strikes things up again with an old flame, played by none other than Don Johnson, the stately father of Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson. How much do you want to bet there will be at least one self-deprecating wink at this connection?
The trailer is a fun romp filled with shenanigans like Steenburgen spiking her husband’s drink with too much Viagra, and Keaton emerging from her closet in what she deems a “cute date outfit”: a baggy plaid coat that threatens to swallow her whole. Book Club plays like a sexy, saucy Golden Girls, and if you ignore the slightly embarrassing Fifty Shades tie-in, it looks like a pretty fun movie.
Here is the official synopsis for Book Club:
The lives of four 60-something women are altered after reading “50 Shades of Grey” in their book club.
Book Club is directed by Bill Holderman. It hits theaters on May 18, 2018.

The Old Grey Whistle Test was unabashedly about the music
But where Top Of The Pops, its glitzier BBC One cousin, was all about chart positions and celebrity DJs, The Old Grey Whistle Test was defiantly, unrepentantly – and often unfashionably – about the music. Or as its most famous presenter Bob Harris put it: “Whistle Test was an albums show. Top Of The Pops was singles.”
Now, to mark 30 years since its final broadcast, BBC Four is resurrecting the Whistle Test. This Friday a live three-hour special presented by Harris will feature music from Peter Frampton, Richard Thompson and Albert Lee – all performed on the original show – as well as guests including Joan Armatrading, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and Chris Difford of Squeeze.
It will also feature several of Whistle Test’s other presenters including Annie Nightingale, Richard Williams, David Hepworth and Andy Kershaw.
And if the whole thing will naturally be something of an exercise in nostalgia for old grey rockers both in the studio and watching at home, it also marks a long-overdue recognition for an institution that arguably did more to champion rock music as a serious art form than any other TV programme before or since.
The list of acts that made their debut British performances on the Whistle Test is astonishing: Bob Marley and the Wailers (whom Harris described as being “ridiculously good
and totally stoned”), Dire Straits, the New York Dolls, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, XTC all of whom shared the tiny studio with superstars including Blondie, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Patti Smith, Queen, R.E.M., The Smiths and Talking Heads.

The Old Grey Whistle Test was unlike Top of The Pops, with no focus on singles
If the eclecticism and sense of musical adventure was part of Whistle Test’s magic – a typical episode might introduce an unknown band followed by a stadium-filler like The Who – so was the sense of absolute equality.
If the music was good, that was enough. This attitude, plus the fact that the show aired live, also meant that things often turned unpredictable, especially in the years after Harris’s departure when Annie Nightingale gave many punk and new wave bands their first real TV exposure.
“A lot of the bands were very inexperienced,” she remembered.
“Everything went wrong when Gary Numan came on with his band Tubeway Army. This was a big break for them and they’d brought their own set made of bits of polystyrene. The fire officer didn’t like it and started spraying it with fire retardant, adding to the tension. Then when the camera swung round and knocked over half their props, hysteria took over.
“I was laughing to try and calm things down but Numan told me later he never forgave us for that because he had felt so nervous.”
She also recalled The Damned performing their breakthrough hit Smash It Up – and promptly doing exactly that to all of their instruments (“to the point where they were looking round to see if there were any mic stands they’d missed”) and a particularly bizarre interview with Jeff Beck, who agreed to appear only if a member of his entourage walked naked across the studio playing bagpipes as they talked.
Other surreal highlights included a segment with future US president Jimmy Carter in 1976 in which Carter sported a Whistle Test badge on his lapel, and an interview with Rolling Stone Keith Richards, during which the rocker consumed most of a bottle of Jack Daniels.
On another occasion Harris remembered an appearance by Lou Reed, who came into the studio flanked by a menacing-looking minder on each shoulder: “Then I noticed the two huge guys were literally supporting him, one under each arm, the toes of his black boots dragging across the floor as they dumped him into the chair beside me.”
Whistle Test was first aired in September 1971 and was the brainchild of BBC Two controller David Attenborough. It was originally presented by Melody Maker journalist Richard Williams, with the emphasis from the start on “serious” music. So there were no fancy sets, only the most basic stage and barely any studio audience.
Even the name reflected its muso intentions, being a nod to the days of Tin Pan Alley when pluggers would judge the merit of a new song by playing it to the “old greys”: the bouncers who worked the doors of Soho clubs.
GETTY
Jimmy Carter even made an appearance on the hit show
If they could whistle the tune after just one hearing, it would invariably prove to be a hit. The show also had a tight budget – just £500 an episode, including rights, appearance money and set design (which may explain why there was no set design).
Initially the presenters were paid £40 a week and the acts a measly £15… with the exception being John Lennon, who was paid in biscuits.
When Harris explained to the former Beatle that, by a quirk of BBC regulations the £15 payment was mandatory, whether he wanted it or not, Lennon – by then living in New York – responded: “Bring me £15-worth of Chocolate Olivers, I can’t get them in America.”
Harris presented Whistle Test for only seven of its 17 years but thanks to his laid-back delivery, hippy geography teacher style and nerdish enthusiasm, he remains the man most associated with it.
Under his tenure it attracted upwards of five million viewers per show but ultimately it was those qualities that forced him to leave.
As the music scene shifted in the mid-1970s, Whispering Bob’s love of a long guitar solo became seen as a sign that he was out of touch with the angrier music that was emerging from the underground.
The final straw came when he described cross-dressing proto-punk outfit the New York Dolls as “mock rock” and then glam pioneers Roxy Music as “all arrogance and packaging and not a lot of substance”.
“Unfortunately a perception developed that we were against punk and new wave,” he said.
BBC
The Old Grey Whistle Test was famous for its tiny budget, but it still lasted 17 years
“But the spotlight of aggression on me did wear me down.”
That “spotlight of aggression” climaxed with Harris being assaulted in a nightclub by Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, who demanded to know why they hadn’t been invited on to the show.
In an almost perfect metaphor for the changing musical landscape Harris was rescued by roadies from prog band Procol Harum.
In 1978 he was replaced as presenter by Annie Nightingale, who gave the show relevancy again, and although ratings declined through the 1980s under the tenure of presenters including Hepworth, fellow journalist Mark Ellen and DJ Andy Kershaw, it continued to showcase future stars such as The Smiths to the end.
In 1988, under the orders of Janet Street-Porter in her role as head of BBC youth and entertainment, it was laid to rest.
GETTY
Sid Vicious was apparently annoyed enough to assault Harris after not being asked on the show
Friday’s special is unlikely to spring any surprises – either musically or in the way of Damned-style anarchics – but for anyone of a certain age who grew up believing pop music is about more than mere chart positions, it should at least bring back some happy memories.
And as for its most famous former presenter even at 71 he’s not ruling out a return for an older, greyer Whistle Test.
“I’m not talking about it being a retro show,” he says. “I mean a magazine show where we discuss new bands.”
Stranger things have happened.

Update: More images from X-Men: Dark Phoenix have been released and we’ve added them below.
Out of the ashes of Apocalypse, a phoenix is born.
A first look at X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been released, along with plot details about Jean Grey’s turn to the dark side. The famous comic book arc was dabbled with in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand with Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, but the soft reboot of First Class has allowed the X-Men universe to have another go at the acclaimed X-Men storyline, with the new Jean, played by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, at the center of it all.
The famous Dark Phoenix saga follows the powerful telepath Jean Grey as she is overtaken by a formidable dark force that unleashes her telepathic and telekinetic potential, but threatens to destroy her persona in the process. It’s one of the most famous X-Men comic book runs of all time, originally published in 1976-1977, and sent ripples throughout the Marvel universe. As a screenwriter, X-Men franchise mainstay Simon Kinberg had tried to introduce the Dark Phoenix arc in X-Men: The Last Stand, but was thwarted by studio interference and a tragic Wolverine-Jean Grey romance. It was a pale imitation.
Now nearly 10 years after Last Stand and well into the golden age of superhero movies, X-Men is having its second try at the Dark Phoenix saga with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Kinberg’s directorial debut. “[The film] was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct,” Kinberg told Entertainment Weekly.
EW has the first look at Sophie Turner as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix:
It’s…lit.
In all seriousness, the Dark Phoenix first look is pretty nondescript, with a nude Sophie Turner rocking fiery locks and showing cracks of flame in her skin. This likely shows Jean Grey during her first transformation into Dark Phoenix, because I can’t imagine Turner walking around nearly nude throughout the entire film (though they did that with Mystique, so what do I know).
EW also released a few more stills from the film, including a first look at Jessica Chastain’s shapeshifting villain, who coldly manipulates Phoenix for her own gain. You can see the rest of the photos here.
What’s more interesting are the revelation of the plot details, from EW:
Set in 1992, about 10 years after the events of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens with the X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) even lands on the cover of Time magazine. But his growing ego puts the team at risk. “Pride is starting to get the better of him, and he is pushing the X-Men to more extreme missions,” Kinberg says. After they’re dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner)— the Phoenix.
The story draws heavily from the “Phoenix Saga” arc in Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and John Byrne, which introduced the Dark Phoenix persona through Jean Grey’s outer-space encounter with a deadly solar flare. The film will delve into the destruction that Dark Phoenix wreaks upon both Earth and Jean Grey’s relationship with her fellow X-Men and beloved mentor Charles Xavier.
“This is probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven,” McAvoy told EW. “There’s a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering.”
“It’s about the butterfly effect of this thing happening,” Turner adds. The actress studied schizophrenia and multiple personality disorders to prepare for the part. “What happens when the person you love the most falls into darkness?”
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
