Here’s what it’s like to grow herbs with the Click & Grow Smart Garden.

I set up the Click & Grow Smart Garden 9, which comprises three parts — a base that holds the seed pods and water tank, an LED light strip, and arms to connect the base to the light — in our office in all of 15 minutes. After filling the four-liter tank with water and inserting each soil capsule into a pod, I plugged the garden into an outlet. The light is pretty bright, and it runs for 16 hours on, eight hours off, so if you plan on keeping it in your bedroom, you should plug it in for the first time right after you wake up.

My garden of green lettuce, mini tomatoes, and basil (three of each, for a total of nine plants) was up and running on March 5, and as you can see from this photo below, by March 28, they had already made significant progress.

I’m continually impressed by how quickly the plants are growing, and based on their comments, so are all of my colleagues who pass by the desk and check up on their progress every day. A combination of factors contributes to this fast, seamless growth:

  1. “Smart Soil” that creates the perfect environment for plants to thrive: This NASA technology-inspired soil releases nutrients in sync with the plant life cycle, keeps its own pH balanced, and employs tiny oxygen pockets to guarantee plants get ample breathing room and nutrients even when the soil is wet.
  2. Strong, non-wasteful LED lights: The LED light system only requires six watts of energy, which equals an $5 annual electricity bill of running the garden. It’s a consistent and strong source of light that anyone not fortunate enough to live in the select few perpetually sunny areas of the world will appreciate. Scarce or unpredictable sunlight is a frustrating factor of gardening that we can’t control, and this light system is a foolproof way to combat potential inconsistencies.
  3. A large, self-watering tank: You don’t need to individually water each plant and wonder if you watered it too much or too little. Instead, you just pour water into the subtle opening in the corner of the base. You’ll know whether to refill the tank once the water fill indicator reaches a low point. Though I didn’t keep track of the exact periods of time between tank refills, I do know that it was less than I expected. Unlike with traditional plants, it was completely fine if I didn’t think about the water consumption for days on end.

Thanks to these elements, I could just sit back and reap all the benefits of a sustainable food garden without even breaking a sweat. For additional support, such as how to cut or transplant your plants, the Click & Grow website is filled with helpful resources. I found that they answered all my questions succinctly and prevented me from diving into the complicated rabbit hole of gardening that’s filled with irrelevant information.

Lettuce, tomato, and basil aren’t the only things you can grow with the Click & Grow.

Disney is taking a Hook-like approach to the Winnie the Pooh series with Christopher Robin. The new live-action film asks the question: what would happen if Winnie’s best human buddy Christopher Robin grew up? The Christopher Robin trailer below provides an answer.

Christopher Robin is the latest Disney film to take a classic animated property and give it a live-action spin. But this film has a twist: rather than simply remake the animated original scene-for-scene, Christopher Robin serves as something of a sequel. In the film, Christopher Robin, the young boy whose imagination conjured up Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and the rest of the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood, has grown into adulthood (in the form of Ewan McGregor). As is the case for most adults, the joys of childhood have been extinguished within Christopher Robin, and now it’s up to his childhood animal friends to help show him the way. The biggest takeaway here: this premise is very similar to Steven Spielberg’s Hook, which focused on a grown-up Peter Pan (as played by Robin Williams) returning to the land of his childhood. Will Christopher Robin feature the infamous Hook Boo Box? Probably not, but we can dream. Christopher Robin comes from World War Z director Marc Forster, with a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry and Allison Schroeder. In addition to McGregor as the titular character, Christopher Robin also stars Hayley Atwell as Christopher Robin’s wife Evelyn; Bronte Carmichael as Christopher Robin’s daughter Madeline; and Mark Gatiss as Keith Winslow, Robin’s boss. The film also features the voices of Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh; Chris O’Dowd as Tigger; Brad Garrett as Eeyore; Toby Jones as Owl; Nick Mohammed as Piglet; Peter Capaldi as Rabbit; and Sophie Okonedo as Kanga.

Christopher Robin will be the second live-action take on the story of Winnie the Pooh in less than a year. The 20017 film Goodbye Christopher Robin told the story of the creation of the character, with Domhnall Gleeson playing Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne.

  • The US Census Bureau recently released its population estimates for the states and Washington, DC.
  • Idaho was the fastest growing state between 2016 and 2017, while Wyoming had the biggest decline in population over that year.

States in the South and West tended to grow pretty quickly last year, while the North and East grew more slowly, and a handful of states saw their populations shrink.

The US Census Bureau recently released its estimates of the populations of each of the 50 US states and Washington, DC, including how their populations changed over a year.

Between July 1, 2016 and July 1, 2017, Idaho grew 2.2%, more than any other state. Eight states saw declines in their populations, with Wyoming coming in last with a 0.96% loss in population.

As the PC market has lost some casual consumers to smartphones, the hardcore gamer has turned into the engine that drives the GPU market. That was once again the case in the third quarter of this year, and that trend helped Nvidia grow its share of the market with a 29.53 percent quarter-to-quarter increase in total GPU shipments, according to industry-tracking firm Jon Peddie Research. AMD shipped 7.63 percent more and Intel was up 5.01 percent during the same period.

“The Gaming PC segment, where higher-end GPUs are used, was once again the bright spot in the market in the quarter,” reads the Jon Peddie Research report. “The desktop gain is attributed to gaming and cryptocurrency. That helped AMD and Nvidia gain market share.”

Discrete GPUs, which are the high-end video cards that gamers purchase when they build their systems, were in 39.55 percent of all PCs. That is up 4.18 percent quarter-over-quarter. But it’s not all about powerful consumer GPUs from Nvidia and AMD.

“AMD’s shipments of desktop APUs, increased 7.1 percent from the previous quarter,” Jon Peddie Research’s report reads. “AMD’s notebook APU shipments were up 2.2 percent. Desktop discrete GPUs increased 16.1% from last quarter, and notebook discrete shipments increased 5.2%. AMD’s total PC graphics shipments increased 7.6% from the previous quarter.”

Intel, which doesn’t produce discrete GPUs, still saw the normal seasonal boost. Its desktop integrate graphics increase 5 percent and its notebook graphics jumped 5.9 percent.

But it was still Nvidia that saw the biggest increase.

“Nvidia’s discrete desktop GPU shipments were up 34.7 percent from last quarter, and the company’s discrete notebook GPU shipments increased 22.4 percent,” reads the report. “Total PC graphics shipments increased 29.5 percent from last quarter.”

Susan Tynan’s favorite bit of advice when asked for words of entrepreneurial wisdom is this: Ignore the well-meaning naysayers who tell you your idea can’t be done.

Tynan is the founder and CEO of Framebridge, an internet custom framing startup. Founded in 2014, she has raised nearly $ 37 million from backers like NEA and Steve Case’s Revolution Ventures at a $ 58 million valuation.

Tynan’s journey to CEO shows that the road to success is more about grit and determination than anything else.

Tynan is a fountain of positivity who won’t take no for an answer. That’s how she landed herself her “dream job” back in 2009 working at the White House for the Obama administration. 

Back in 2006, she was a Harvard MBA working at Steve Case’s startup called Revolution Health, basically a WebMD competitor, that gained a reputation for its layoffs and struggles at the time. (Case turned it around and sold it to Everyday Health Network in 2007 for $ 300 million.)

Working from the bathroom for the White House

With Revolution under new ownership, Tynan was at a crossroads in her career. She was living in Washington, D.C. during the euphoric days for Democrats right after President Obama had been elected. Although she had no experience in government, she decided working for Obama would be her “dream job,” she told Business Insider.

To get such a job, she sent her resume to “like 10,000 people,” anyone who she thought could get her an introduction, she laughs. It worked and she landed an interview — during it, she apologized for “going overboard,” she said. The guy who hired her told her, “My wife came to me with your resume. Everyone came to me with your resume.”

obama reading white houseThe White HouseThe job involved writing policy papers on things like using technology to improve customer service. While she loved working at the White House – it felt like “a privilege,” she says – there were some downsides. For one, White House staffers were expected to be work around the clock.

“I remember one time, my parents were in town and we went to dinner and I was hiding out in the bathroom on my Blackberry, working,” she said.

Meanwhile, several of her old buddies from Revolution had gone on to found LivingSocial. “It was growing so fast and was so exciting. I was watching them truly with envy, and one day they called,” she said. 

Less than two years at the White House, Tynan quit to join LivingSocial and help them launch new product lines. The pace of the startup world after the slow grind of government made her head spin. She started on a Monday and was told her first new product would launch on Friday.

The big lesson was, “speed is a virtue in a startup, and sometimes you just have to move on a lot less info than you comfort with,” she said. She went on to launch three product lines for LivingSocial before jumping onto another job at another startup, called Taxi Magic.

The idea for Framebridge occurred to her when she was still at LivingSocial. Tynan went to get some mementos custom framed and was shocked at the expense. She searched for a cheaper online alternative and didn’t find one. She had just started her new job but become obsessed with launching an online custom framing company, in much the same way she had become obsessed with getting a job at the White House.

With several years of startup experience, she felt ready, but investors weren’t biting.

“I had to quit my job,” for people to take her seriously, she said. With two young children at home, “That was scary. A really big leap.” But she did it.

And then, “I hit the jackpot with Dayna Grayson,” a VC at NEA. Grayson had recently gone through her own struggles to get a project framed. She backed her and taught her how to pitch other investors. “Raising capital is its own game with its own set of etiquette rules,” Tynan said.

For instance, you can’t send a cold email but must be introduced to an investor, Tynan learned. And you have to show a track record. So if your career didn’t provide that, you have to manufacturer it, such as telling investors your next steps like completing a mock-up and talking to 100 would-be customers, and then completing them. 

The true challenge was running the business

With funding, Tynan launched Framebridge — but soon after, was almost a victim of her own success.

In 2015, the company’s first big Father’s Day campaign was wildly successful and landed them too many customers and too many projects than she had the staff to fulfill. Instead of the promised one-week turnaround, customers would have to wait weeks.

“We’re not going to go down like this,” she said. She wrote a heartfelt apology letter to customers, gave them more realistic dates and pulled every employee, even the office workers, into the workshop. They worked seven days a week through July and August and madly hired more framers. 

At the end of that episode, she hired an experienced production manager who taught her how to plan for orders on daily basis. “We’re not building a SaaS business where I can look out 18 months and know what my business is,” she says.

Fast forward to 2017 and Tynan now employs 200 full-time workers, and will balloon to 400 people over the holiday season. Framebridge, meanwhile, has landed deals with Target, and Crate & Barrel. And Tynan has built her first US factory, too, in Kentucky.
