Peter Chiarelli has been fired as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers and replaced on an interim basis by Keith Gretzky, who was previously Chiarelli's assistant.

Bob Nicholson, CEO and vice-chair of Oilers Entertainment Group, said at Tuesday's news conference that the decision to cut Chiarelli loose was made prior to Tuesday night's 3-2 loss — Edmonton's third in a row on home ice — to the last-place Detroit Red Wings.

Edmonton's ninth defeat in the past 11 at Rogers Place pushed the team three points out of playoff position. Sure, the Oilers are only three points behind Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the NHL's Western Conference but there are three teams ahead of them in Vancouver, Anaheim and Arizona.

"We're not going to outskill anyone. We're a team that needs to find a way to win games 2-1, 3-2," captain Connor McDavid told reporters on Monday.

Chiareilli, who departs with one season left on his five-year contract, arrived in Edmonton in August 2015 after guiding the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. But he didn't witness a drastic improvement in play during his tenure as the Oilers missed the post-season twice in his first three seasons.

They lost in the second round in 2017 following a 47-win, 103-point regular season.

WATCH | Oilers drop 3rd straight at home, leading to Chiarelli's firing:

A 2-goal performance from Luke Glendening, including a soft insurance marker midway through the 3rd period, was the difference as Detroit beat Edmonton 3-2 on Tuesday night. 0:22

Questionable moves

In late November, he fired head coach Todd McLellan during a 1-6-0 slide and brought in Ken Hitchcock. Following an initial 8-2-1 surge, Edmonton has faded in recent weeks.

Chiarelli, a native of Nepean, Ont., guided the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011.

A series of moves by Chiarelli didn't complement a top-heavy roster, led by Leon Draisaitl and fellow centre McDavid.

Chiarelli's trades with Oilers

  • June 26, 2015: Acquired defenceman Griffin Reinhart from the New York Islanders for Pittsburgh's first-round pick and Edmonton's second-rounder in 2015 draft. Reinhart had one point in 29 games for the Oilers in 2015-16 and was selected by Vegas in the 2017 expansion draft. The first-round pick (16th overall), turned out to be centre Mathew Barzal, who had 85 points last season. The 21-year-old has 45 points in 49 starts this season through Tuesday.
  • June 27, 2015:Picked up goalie Cam Talbot from the New York Rangers for a third-, fifth- and seventh-round pick. Neither of the players drafted by the Rangers has appeared in an NHL game.
  • June 29, 2016:Taylor Hall dealt to Devils for Adam Larsson: Perhaps Chiarelli's most notorious blunder. Drafted fourth overall in 2011, Larsson has yet to reach 20 points in any of his three seasons with Edmonton while Hall was the 2018 Hart Trophy recipient (NHL MVP) after scoring 39 goals and 93 points in the 2017-18 campaign.
  • June 22, 2017: Jordan Eberle traded to Islanders for Ryan Strome: A cost-cutting move by Chiarelli, who watched Strome play 100 games (36 points) before moving him to the New York Rangers two months ago for fellow forward Ryan Spooner. Earlier this week, Spooner cleared waivers and has been largely ineffective in an Oilers sweater. Eberle had 59 points last season on Long Island and has 23 points in 45 contests this year.

Marginal gains on special teams

"I'm certainly not absolving myself of any responsibility on the player personnel [side]," Chiarelli said in November. "This is a collective thing and it's our job to get to the playoffs. We owe it to our fans."

Hitchcock inherited an Oilers outfit that has scored fewer goals than it has allowed (57-66) and is having its troubles on special teams as the power play ranks 15th (20.6 per cent success rate) in the 31-team NHL while the penalty kill is 27th (74.2 per cent).

Edmonton has either slipped or improved slightly in those areas, with a minus-18 goal differential while sitting 11th of 31 clubs on the power play (21.1 per cent) and 25th on the penalty kill (77.3 per cent) through Tuesday.

Also, pending unrestricted free-agent goalie Cam Talbot has lost his starting job to Mikko Koskinen, whom Chiarelli was allowed to re-sign to a three-year, $ 13.5 million US deal less than 36 hours before he was fired.

Koskinen, a 30-year-old with four games of NHL experience in 2010-11 prior to this season, will have an average salary cap hit of $ 4.5 million, or nearly double his current one year hit of $ 2.5 million.

On anniversary of his trade, Gretzky more focused on hockey's future https://briefnews.eu/on-anniversary-of-his-trade-gretzky-more-focused-on-hockeys-future/ https://briefnews.eu/on-anniversary-of-his-trade-gretzky-more-focused-on-hockeys-future/#respond Thu, 09 Aug 2018 09:27:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/on-anniversary-of-his-trade-gretzky-more-focused-on-hockeys-future/

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of his stunning trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings on Aug. 9 1988, Wayne Gretzky was more focused on the future of hockey than his own past.

Holding a press conference in support of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup under-18 hockey tournament in Edmonton, the top scorer in NHL history was naturally asked about the anniversary of his trade to the Kings from the Oilers, with whom he won four Stanley Cups.

"I don't really talk about it much," he said. "It happened. It is part of life and part of history. It seems like it was 10 years and then 25 years and now here we are at 30 years. I'm sure at 35 years I will get asked the same questions, but I don't talk much about it. Everybody pretty much knows what transpired, and that is that.

"It was as much as a surprise to me as to anybody else that I was traded, but that is a part of sports."

Click on the video player below to learn more about the stunning Gretzky trade:

It's been 30 years since The Great One uttered the words "I promised Mess I wouldn't do this" and shocked the sporting world. The Gretzky trade sent Canada into mourning, and the NHL into expansion. 4:29

Gretzky preferred to discuss the future of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which continues through to the finals on Saturday. It is the first time the event — which made its debut 27 years ago — has been held in Edmonton. It will return to Alberta's capital every two years, with the tournament taking place in the Czech Republic on odd years.

Although attendance had not exactly been record setting through the first three days, particularly for the games not featuring Canada, Gretzky feels that once hockey fans are more exposed to the event that it will grow into a much bigger deal.

'It's going to take a bit of time'

"It's going to take a bit of time," he said. "I played in the world junior tournament in 1977 and we had 1,200 people in the Montreal Forum. Now you look at a world junior game when Canada plays and you can have 17,000 people there. This isn't going to happen overnight. It is a great hockey market in a great sports city.

"They had a nice crowd for the Canada game for Game 1 and I am sure as the week goes a long that the Canadians will draw more and more people. I am very impressed by the Canadian team."

Another topic of discussion was the recent news that Gretzky has been named a global ambassador for Beijing's Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League, as China looks to ramp up interest in hockey in advance of hosting the Winter Olympics in 2022.

"We've been working on this for close to two years," he said. "The Chinese business community has really rallied around ice hockey because of the upcoming Olympics. They have built these academies and my son and I are going to go over and do hockey academies there and see about building ice rinks in China. And it turns out there is an NHL game when we are there, so we'll get to go to that, too.

"It will be fun trip. I have never been to China and I am looking forward to it."

The Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames will face off in Shenzhen on Sept. 15 and Beijing on Sept. 19.

As for getting NHL players back in the Olympics in time for China, Gretzky says he hopes that comes to pass.

"I've made no secret that I believe the players should be at the Olympics," he said. "I think it rallies the country and the players love to play in it. Hopefully they can come to an agreement, the league and the union, and we can get the best players back into the Olympics."

Ice hockey legend Gretzky to take up new role at Chinese KHL club https://briefnews.eu/ice-hockey-legend-gretzky-to-take-up-new-role-at-chinese-khl-club/ https://briefnews.eu/ice-hockey-legend-gretzky-to-take-up-new-role-at-chinese-khl-club/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 10:36:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ice-hockey-legend-gretzky-to-take-up-new-role-at-chinese-khl-club/

Canadian ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky is taking up a role as global ambassador for Chinese club Kunlun Red Star, who compete in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Beijing-based Red Star is China’s only professional ice hockey club, and Gretzky’s role will include helping to develop youth participation in the sport as the Chinese capital gears up to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The club began competing in the Russian-based KHL in 2016 – the year they were founded – and the team’s roster consists predominantly of overseas players.

NHL legend Gretzky, 57, is also planning to open a KRS-Gretzky Hockey School for players aged 8-17 in Beijing and the city of Shenzhen, which could possibly expand to more than 20 locations across China, according to the China Daily newspaper.

Red Star executive director Ao Meng said Gretzky’s new role would provide a “tremendous boost” to efforts to grow the game in the country.

“To now have him part of the growth of hockey in China in the build-up to the 2022 Winter Olympics will promote interest and participation in the sport, especially among young people,” Ao said.

“His contribution to the game is incalculable. To now have him part of the growth of hockey in China in the build-up to the 2022 Winter Olympics will promote interest and participation in the sport, especially among young people.”

Greyzky – nicknamed ‘The Great One’ due to his stellar 20-year career in which he became the all-time leading NHL scorer – said that he was “excited” by the chance to help the game develop in the Far East.

“I’m excited to make my first trip to China next month and partner with Kunlun Red Star to grow this wonderful game,” the Hall of Famer said, adding: “I’m looking forward to seeing more and more young players take part in the sport.”

Gretzky is set to make visits to Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai in September – the same month as the NHL holds promotional games in China with the Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames facing off in two encounters.

“The players we immortalized on this year’s stamps redefined hockey over careers that spanned more than 60 years,” Canada Post president and CEO Deepak Chopra said Wednesday in a release. “They inspired us — and each other — with feats that boggle the mind. They are the ultimate six. We hope that by issuing these stamps during the NHL’s centennial, we have helped make this milestone year for the NHL even more special.”

As a group, the players scored more than 9,500 points in almost 7,000 regular-season games, won 40 Stanley Cup championships — 30 as players and another 10 as management — and more than 80 individual awards.

Sidney Crosby is the best hockey player since Gretzky https://briefnews.eu/sidney-crosby-is-the-best-hockey-player-since-gretzky/ https://briefnews.eu/sidney-crosby-is-the-best-hockey-player-since-gretzky/#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2017 16:54:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sidney-crosby-is-the-best-hockey-player-since-gretzky/ The Canadian hockey scene first became widely aware of Sidney Crosby 15 years ago at the 2002 Air Canada Cup midget championship in Bathurst, N.B.

Crosby was the youngest player in the tournament at 14, playing against kids two and three years older. He still led the tournament in scoring and was named the MVP.

He wasn’t known as the Next One or Sid the Kid yet, but he did escort the Dartmouth Subways to the final, only to lose 6-2 in the title game to the Tisdale (Sask.) Trojans.

Later that summer, Crosby hung around the Canadian world junior summer camp in Halifax, eager to soak up any kernel of knowledge he could from this country’s top teenagers.

It was a year later that Wayne Gretzky introduced Crosby to the rest of the hockey world. A reporter asked No. 99 if someone down the road would one day beat his records. Gretzky replied, “Yes, Sidney Crosby. He’s dynamite. He’s the best player I’ve seen since Mario [Lemieux]. He’s that good.”

Crosby has been that good. In fact, I believe he’s the best player the game has seen since Gretzky. Better than Lemieux.

There’s no denying Lemieux’s physical talent and how dominant he was in his prime. But Crosby has brought a consistency and determination to the rink that it took Lemieux a long time to develop.

Lemieux floated early in his career. Then he learned how to win, celebrating a Canada Cup, back-to-back Stanley Cups and Conn Smythe Trophies, a World Cup title and Olympic gold. But Crosby has won even more at this point in his career.

Two days ago, the Penguins captain, who will turn 30 this summer, added another notch in his championship belt by winning his third Stanley Cup. He has enjoyed an incredible run in the past 39 months, with an Olympic gold medal, a world championship, a World Cup title, the World Cup MVP award, and back-to-back Stanley Cups and Conn Smythes.

Sid vs. Wayne

When you add up all his accomplishments, it makes you wonder: how does Crosby’s career stack up to the Great One’s?

Sure, it’s a little early to make the comparison. Crosby still could play for another 10 years if he remains healthy. But it doesn’t hurt to review his accomplishments against Gretzky’s at this point.

Crosby, who missed significant time a few years ago because of concussion problems that continued to shadow him this season, will never reach the scoring stats that Gretzky piled up. They played in different eras. In Gretzky’s prime, the average game had 7.5 goals, compared to about 5.25 in recent seasons.

Here is a statistical comparison based on combined regular-season and playoff totals:

  • Crosby: 930 games, 439 goals, 1,191 points, 0.47 goals per game, 1.28 points per game
  • Gretzky: 1,695 games, 1,016 goals, 3,239 points, 0.60 goals per game, 1.91 points per game

Gretzky won a record 10 scoring championships and nine Hart Trophies, along with four Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythes and three Canada Cups.

Midway through his career, Crosby has a world junior crown, three Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythes, two Olympic gold medals, a world championship and a pair of Hart Trophies.

HKY-OILERS-ANNIVERSARY

More to come?

Gretzky did not win a Stanley Cup or an international championship after his 28th birthday. Crosby, on the other hand, has won two Stanley Cups since he turned 28. Is there more in store? Why not? He’s in the prime of his career.

The other thing is Gretzky played on a team full of superstars — Hall of Famers like Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey and Mark Messier.

Crosby has spent most of his time playing between the likes of Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz — solid players, but not Hall of Famers — and more recently young players like Conor Sheary and Jake Guentzel. Evgeni Malkin is a sure-bet Hall of Famer, and maybe defenceman Kris Letang will get there. But will there be anybody else?

Crosby also is a more complete player than Gretzky. No. 87 is so aware defensively, and has more grit and determination in his own end. If you need him to shut down an opposing player, Crosby is up to it. You could not say the same about Gretzky.

With what Crosby has been able to accomplish in his first 12 NHL seasons, there is little doubt that No. 87 belongs in the first group of all-time great players, alongside Gretzky and Bobby Orr.

Crosby has proven to be a generational talent with so many clutch performances, like the golden goal he delivered at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver or the way he played in the final three games of this year’s Stanley Cup final against the Nashville Predators.

Crosby has been a championship catalyst and it will be intriguing to see where the next decade takes him.

NHL 100: Gretzky, Patrick Roy among memorable trades https://briefnews.eu/nhl-100-gretzky-patrick-roy-among-memorable-trades/ https://briefnews.eu/nhl-100-gretzky-patrick-roy-among-memorable-trades/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 14:10:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nhl-100-gretzky-patrick-roy-among-memorable-trades/

While the NHL’s introduction of a salary cap has made it more difficult for teams to make trades, there’s still a long history of wheeling and dealing.

Ahead of the Wednesday trade deadline, the latest edition of NHL 100 takes a look at some of the league’s most memorable, and infamous, swaps.

Gretzky to the Kings

The list could begin and end with the Edmonton Oilers trading Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles in 1988. The Great One was coming off a fourth Stanley Cup in five years when Edmonton owner Peter Pocklington swung a deal with the Kings that included players, draft picks and $ 15 million US going to the Oilers.

Fans in Edmonton and across Canada were furious, but “The Trade” changed the hockey landscape forever. It helped cement the NHL in California and paved the way for further expansion in the sunbelt.

Gilmour to Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs’ acquisition of Doug Gilmour in a 10-player trade with Calgary in 1992 helped propel Toronto to its best run since the city’s last Stanley Cup in 1967. Gilmour put up a combined 238 points in his first two full seasons with Toronto, leading the Leafs to back-to-back conference finals. The Flames got former 50-goal man Gary Leeman in the trade, but missed the post-season in 1992 and wouldn’t win another playoff series until 2004.

Roy to the Avalanche

Patrick Roy won two Stanley Cups with the Canadiens, but a particularly bad night in 1995 sealed the goalie’s fate with Montreal. Habs head coach Mario Tremblay left his star netminder in for nine goals in an 11-1 loss to Detroit at the Montreal Forum.

After finally getting pulled, a furious Roy told team president Ronald Corey, who was seated behind the bench, that he had played his last game for Montreal. Roy was traded to the Avalanche, where he would win the Cup in the spring of 1996 before grabbing another in 2001.

Lindros to Flyers

The Quebec Nordiques selected Eric Lindros with the first pick in the 1991 draft despite the hulking forward having no interest in playing for the team. Quebec would eventually work out a deal with Philadelphia for Lindros the following year that included Peter Forsberg going to the Nordiques.

While the Flyers were thrilled to get one of the most physically gifted players in NHL history, Quebec also benefited. But unfortunately for fans of the Nordiques, the club’s potential wasn’t fully realized until it moved to Colorado and won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 1996.

Neely to Bruins

The Vancouver Canucks selected Cam Neely ninth overall in 1983, but gave up on the power forward in a deal that also sent a first-round pick in the 1987 draft to Boston for Barry Pederson. A native of Comox, B.C., Neely never scored more than 39 points with the Canucks, but had 36 goals alone in his first season with the Bruins.

He would finish with three 50-goal campaigns before retiring in 1996. Pederson scored 24 goals in his first year with Vancouver, but never again topped 20. And as if a Neely-for-Pederson trade wasn’t bad enough, Boston drafted defenceman Glen Wesley, who went on to have a 20-year career, with the pick included in the swap.

Esposito to Bruins

The Boston Bruins acquired Phil Esposito from the Chicago Blackhawks in a six-player trade in 1967. Esposito led the league in scoring in five times with Boston, including a 76-goal, 76-assist campaign in 1970-71. He also helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in both 1970 and 1972, Boston’s first titles since 1941.
