In Ruth’s debut novel, Kate Andrews is a famous actress with a loving husband, Matt, and an effervescent young daughter, Tallulah.

To the outside world, her life is perfect. But on a PR visit to a school in Scotland, she encounters teacher Callum, an older man with whom she had an affair 17 years before.

Both of their lives are thrown into turmoil as they rekindle a relationship that puts their marriages and their careers at risk.

It’s an intriguing conceit for a novel: what if you met a former lover in later life who you’d never quite got out of your system?

The novel covers an impressive range of themes from depression and eating disorders to infidelity and the complexities of modern marriage.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Jones’ TV career, it is particularly incisive about the pressures of fame and its accompanying loneliness: “Sometimes the film-set banter was exhausting. Always having to keep up this pretence of ‘all mates together’, having to be constantly upbeat.” 

Ruth Jones conveys human foibles and vulnerabilities with insight, compassion and a lack of judgment.

Kate can be infuriating in her self-absorption yet, as she tries to work out what she wants, the author gives her enough vulnerability to make us care: “Kate longed to be normal. To never have to over-think or listen to the running commentary whirring in her head, telling her she was never good enough or real enough, calling her useless and ugly and fat.”

Thought-provoking, compelling and ultimately redemptive, Never Greener is a captivating modern morality tale.

Carbon fiber’s large ecological footprint centers around the way in which acrylonitrile, the base material for commercial carbon fiber, is currently made: from petroleum, using a process that uses quite a bit of energy, requires an expensive catalyst, and yields hydrogen cyanide, a toxic byproduct. This also helps explain carbon fiber’s high price, as just the acrylonitrile itself—two pounds of which are required for each pound of finished product—accounts for more than half of the production cost of carbon fiber.

Fortunately, this issue is at the center of biomass research that aims to make significant cuts to costs and eventually to wean carbon-fiber production off oil entirely. Researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) last month announced that they have created a new catalytic process that is both compatible with renewable feedstocks and has a far better yield than the existing process—98 percent versus 80 to 83 percent. The research team estimates that, using cellulosic biomass (from wood, grasses, or even paper pulp) or starch-based sugars, it could lower the cost of making the base material to below $ 1 per pound.

Growing (Not Pumping) the Materials

That cost target has been among the goals of the Renewable Carbon Fiber Consortium, a research effort with a budget of about $ 8 million funded mostly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), along with other financial partners that include Ford. Transitioning to variable feedstocks should also make the price itself more stable, as the way it’s produced today leaves it open to fluctuations in typically volatile oil prices. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon fiber is projected to increase by up to 18 percent annually.

The DOE project, which is scheduled to last at least until the end of 2018, is focusing its research on uses for automotive lightweighting. But aircraft could benefit eventually, too.

Carbon fiber lasts a long time, yet it’s very difficult to recycle. In part, that is because reprocessing it often involves breaking the carbon-fiber material away from the polymer it has been bonded to—usually a carbon-fiber composite (CFP) or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP)—shredding the fiber, and then trying to realign the recycled fiber into a new material, which inevitably has less strength. One of the few exceptions would be the forged carbon-fiber composites that Lamborghini has developed and is beginning to use in its latest cars.

Researchers have tried other plant-derived feedstocks in the past, including lignin, pitch, and rayon, but the results haven’t been favorable. The next phase of the DOE research is to scale the process up to 110 pounds of production material and test a carbon-fiber component made with it. If these researchers have cracked the code for making carbon fiber to the same strength as the current stuff, the material could become even more widespread—and save a lot of oil to boot.

Indigo plants have been used to dye fabric for thousands of years. Unlike other dyes, indigo does not end up chemically linked to textile fibers; rather, it adsorbs to the surface of the threads. This allows the fibers’ white cores to show through to various degrees after abrasion. Hence that impossible-to-replicate look of perfectly worn-in jeans.

But indigo plants yield only a small amount of the dye. It’s not nearly enough to keep pace with the enormous demand that Levi Strauss unleashed when he invented blue jeans in the 1870s. Now, after over a century of relying on a lot of toxic chemicals to make a synthetic version, researchers have engineered bacteria that will make it.

The demand for blue dye was handled by one of Strauss’ fellow Bavarians—Adolph von Baeyer, of aspirin fame. He found a way to make a synthetic version of indigo, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905.

Some wags will always try to claim that EVs are just as dirty as regular cars, because electricity is generated in coal-fired power stations. Except, that’s less true now, which is why the Union of Concerned Scientists has updated its data on how environmentally friendly electric cars are. The results won’t shock you, but the average EV in the US is now about as clean as a gas-powered car that can make 73 miles per gallon.

Back in 2009, the argument was a little muddier, thanks to the makeup of America’s energy sources, which has changed significantly. As states have moved from coal toward gas, solar, wind, and hydro, emissions are falling. As the price of solar and wind energy, especially, continues to fall, emissions are going to get ever smaller over time. The grid mix is improving, and while it still matters where one lives and drives, 19 out of 26 regions saw average EV emissions equal to or better than a 51-mpg car in 2014, up from just nine regions in 2009.

The Union also poured cold water onto the argument that because EVs are more emissions-intensive to build, they’re a danger. They found that while an 80-mile EV creates 15 percent more emissions during construction, that is quickly balanced out by the climate savings made by not burning fuel. In fact, the report says that a car like the Nissan Leaf could pay off its carbon “debt” within six months of its purchase. So, in summary, one of the best things you can do to help the planet right now is buy an electric car.

Air travel releases almost 800 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, pushing usever closer to our looming environmental catastrophe. NASA scientists want to do something about it, and teamed up with researchers in Germany and Canada to find a way to tackle the issue. Its findings claim that jets that use biofuels emit up to 70 percent less pollution and reduces the formation of water condensation trails (contrails) in their wake.

In order to test if biofuels were cleaner, NASA flew a DC-8 out of California’s Armstrong Flight Center that used different fuels on each trip. A trio of monitoring planes then flew into the CD-8’s wake at distances as close to 250 meters to suck up the exhaust for monitoring. One fuel that appears promising is a mix of hydro-processed esters and fatty acids produced from camelina plant oil. These initial tests believe that the amount of climate-causing emissions fell between 50 and 70 percent.

It’s not just what jet engines burn that contributes to climate change, however, but what condensation trails cause. If you’re unfamiliar, particles of soot pass out of the engine along with water vapor, and at such a high altitude, form ice crystals. The result is a long white trail of ice that takes a while to dissipate, and is the cause of the nonsensical chemtrails conspiracy theory.

The ice, as it lingers in the atmosphere, can form cirrus clouds, which then form a blanket layer over the Earth. That, unfortunately, raises the temperature of the air beneath it by up to 10 degrees celsius, magnifying localized warming. With fewer soot particles in the wake, these contrails don’t form as frequently, which should help the fight against climate change.
