Zac Efron goes to Vietnam in the shallow comedy The Greatest Beer Run Ever https://briefnews.eu/zac-efron-goes-to-vietnam-in-the-shallow-comedy-the-greatest-beer-run-ever/ https://briefnews.eu/zac-efron-goes-to-vietnam-in-the-shallow-comedy-the-greatest-beer-run-ever/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 03:16:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/zac-efron-goes-to-vietnam-in-the-shallow-comedy-the-greatest-beer-run-ever/ It was wishful thinking to imagine that Peter Farrelly would go back to making dick and fart jokes with his brother, Bobby, after winning Best Picture for Green Book, whose road to Academy glory began here in Toronto four years ago. How are you gonna keep him on the flatulence farm when he’s seen the bright lights of the Kodak Theatre? Following the rosy can’t-we-call-get-along biopic race relations of his previous film and their unfortunate Oscar-night victory, the guy who once gave Cameron Diaz a spunky new hairdo, has officially traded lowbrow comedy for middlebrow dramedy. There’s gold (statuettes) in them hills.

To be fair, Farrelly has always been a sap, as secretly interested in warming hearts as he is in triggering gag reflexes. Look beyond the scatological set pieces that made them popular, and you can see a touch of Frank Capra in many of Peter and Bobby’s sweet misfit yuk- and yuck-fests. Lately, the writer-director has simply been reversing the ratio of Goofus to Gallant. His latest film, The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which premiered last night at TIFF, reverses it further in Gallant’s favor. This is another true story of broadening horizons during the 1960s that feels like it could have been conceived for the screen sometime in the 1980s. And it’s further proof that Farrelly did better, more charming work when he ballasted his soft side with raunch.

Zac Efron can see that war is hell in The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

Going prestige-picture straight has not, thankfully, killed his endearing love of knuckleheads. Here, as in Green Book, there is the anchoring presence of an amiable New Yawk lunk: John “Chickie” Donohue (Zac Efron), a hard-drinking Brooklyn dude with a not-particularly-enlightened perspective on the war in Vietnam. One night in his local watering hole (tended by Farrelly’s old Kingpin secret weapon, Bill Murray), he hatches a foolhardy scheme: He’ll bring a beer to each of his four buddies still stationed in Vietnam, as a thank you for their service. No one, not even Chickie himself, expects him to actually go through with this cockamamie plan. But soon enough, he’s on a cargo ship headed for the war, duffel bag of PBR over his shoulder.

Having just won Best Picture with a movie about an Italian American from midcentury New York, is Farrelly following further in the footsteps of Francis Ford Coppola? Co-written by Brian Currie and Pete Jones, adapting the memoir of the same name, The Greatest Beer Run Ever becomes something akin to, well, his version of Apocalypse Now. (No, really.) Chickie, a well-intentioned fool, bumbles into a war zone like a frat boy taking a late-night bet too far. He ends up crisscrossing in and out of danger, delivering brews to old friends who receive him less with open arms than are-you-actually-insane admonishments. It’s to the movie’s credit that being amused by Chickie’s ambitiously stupid journey of patriotic gratitude doesn’t preclude recognizing what a blinkered idiot he is for embarking upon it. He’s a “war tourist” getting in over his head for the story.

Beer Run might have worked a little better as satire, with a version of Chickie too thick-skulled to ever acknowledge what a bad idea this little bring-the-party-to-them pilgrimage was. Instead, a fish out of water comedy becomes a tale of innocence lost, as our hero starts to wake up to the reality of the war that the cameras don’t capture and the sense in his protesting younger sister’s claims that LBJ is lying to the public. Without articulating it quite so directly, the film becomes about Chickie realizing that there’s no discrepancy between supporting the troops and opposing the war — an awakening plenty of actual Americans went through during the long death march of Vietnam. In practice, though, that’s akin to Futurama’s savvy spoof of M*A*S*H*, with Farrelly toggling the switch from “irreverent” to “maudlin” and just keeping it there.

There are poignant moments here, many of them courtesy of Russell Crowe as a war photographer who finds some begrudged respect for Chickie’s self-imposed mission. But while the film isn’t quite as risible as Green Book (it’s not a glorified white savior story in buddy-comedy drag, in other words), it has an awfully similar arc: A myopic doofus has his eyes opened by the hardships of others, gaining edification through the suffering he witnesses (in this case, on a countrywide scale). In other words, all the horrors of Vietnam — not avoided or sanitized, exactly, but certainly selectively encountered — are just the catalyst for a screw-up to grow up and gain a more nuanced perspective on the world. Perhaps you could call The Greatest Beer Run Ever Farrelly’s attempt to do the same. If so, it makes an inadvertent case for immaturity in the process.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s 25 Greatest Characters of All Time, Ranked https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/ https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/#respond Sun, 30 Aug 2020 19:27:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayers-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/

Nearly 20 years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer last aired, TVLine is raising the cult-classic series from the dead for a reevaluation of sorts. We’re not questioning whether it was as excellent as we remember — we’ve rewatched it often enough to know that it was. But we are wondering whether the characters that we liked the best… actually were the best.

To that end, we’ve singled out the 25 fictional individuals — OK, and a grouping here and there — that we still think put the “super” in the supernatural. Among them are — well, duh — the title character, a heroine for the ages; more than one version of not only her closest friend but her boyfriend; an airhead who all these years later is still on our minds; and a vamp whose nickname really shouldn’t have been William the Bloody but William the Bloody Awesome.

No doubt, you will have… um, let’s call them feelings about the characters who have been excluded from this list. There are probably even at least a couple of you who will cry foul over the absence of a certain ultra-annoying Key, aka the Cousin Oliver of the Buffyverse. You may render your complaints to your hearts’ content in the comments section below.

But first, you should check out how we’ve ranked our Top 25 by clicking on the photo gallery above (or going here for direct access). Then and only then should you move on to the comments and reveal whether you think our countdown bites… or sucks. Ready… set… click.

The Walking Dead’s 25 Greatest Characters of All Time, Ranked https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-deads-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/ https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-deads-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/#respond Mon, 17 Aug 2020 00:35:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-deads-25-greatest-characters-of-all-time-ranked/

In its 10 seasons and 146 episodes, The Walking Dead has introduced us to as many characters as it has walkers — or at least it can seem that way. But only a choice few have gone on to reach the iconic status of, say, Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes or Danai Gurira’s Michonne. And only a few more have managed to even earn themselves spots on TVLine’s highly-competitive countdown of the AMC drama’s 25 greatest characters of all time.

Which of your favorites made the cut? Though we don’t want to spoil all of the surprises, we will say that the list includes a villain with an affinity for sending folks to Pee-Pee Pants City, a noble protagonist who gave a whole new meaning to the phrase “Death becomes her,” and a certain little ass-kicker with a very big heart.

Possibly even more interesting (and controversial) than who won a slot in the Top 25 will be who didn’t. Missing in action are some major players, whether because they made too many boneheaded moves to deserve memorialization, because the light they shone was eclipsed by bigger, brighter characters over time, or because they’re just too new. (Sorry, Princess; we do love ya, though!)

Ready to break up the monotony of waiting for Season 10’s long-delayed “fauxnale” (which now has an airdate) by meeting our picks for The Walking Dead’s 25 greatest characters of all time? Just click on the photo gallery above or go here for direct access, then let fly your reactions in the comments section below.

Strictly Come Dancing: Bruno Tonioli replacement ‘revealed’ as The Greatest Dancer star https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-bruno-tonioli-replacement-revealed-as-the-greatest-dancer-star/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-bruno-tonioli-replacement-revealed-as-the-greatest-dancer-star/#respond Sat, 20 Jun 2020 18:11:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-bruno-tonioli-replacement-revealed-as-the-greatest-dancer-star/

Strictly Come Dancing bosses have promised they are doing everything they can to get one of the nation’s favourite shows out in September.

However, despite the ongoing COVID-19 drama, it seems one of the Strictly judges might not be taking part this year.

There have been several judges throughout the years, but Bruno and Craig Revel Horwood have been with the show throughout its time on BBC One.

However, due to the current restrictions when it comes to air travel, it might not be possible for Bruno to do all the jobs he usually does as he is typically away for a couple of weeks to film Dancing with the Stars in America.

Cheryl breaks down in tears over emotional The Greatest Dancer performance: ‘Are you okay? https://briefnews.eu/cheryl-breaks-down-in-tears-over-emotional-the-greatest-dancer-performance-are-you-okay/ https://briefnews.eu/cheryl-breaks-down-in-tears-over-emotional-the-greatest-dancer-performance-are-you-okay/#respond Sat, 04 Jan 2020 20:21:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cheryl-breaks-down-in-tears-over-emotional-the-greatest-dancer-performance-are-you-okay/

After Ellie Ferguson from Liverpool won The Greastest Dancer last year with mentor Oti Mabuse, the BBC series return this evening. The judges were wowed by several contestants but it was eight-year-old Joseph and 10-year-old Lily who had judge Cheryl in tears.

The pair performed an emotional contemporary routine to Andra Day’s Rise Up, which thrilled the audience.

Lily and Joseph hoped to show off their friendship with their audition, which included plenty of daring lifts.

As the mirrors opened, meaning the audience thought their routine was good enough to progress to the next round, Cheryl stood to cheer the duo on.

The mother-of-one could be seen wiping her eyes as she broke down in tears over the performance.

After they left the stage, Todrick joked to Cheryl: “You do have a heart after all.”

“Somewhere in there,” she laughed in reply as Matthew warned: “Oh, this one is a cryer.”

Cheryl went on to note she thought she could pick the duo if she was the judge who got to choose the “Greatest Dancer of the Day”, a new feature on the show.

At each day of the auditions, one judge is randomly picked to choose who they want on their team in the live show.

And it seems some of the decisions caused disruption to the show as Oti Mabuse broke down trying to choose her “Greatest Dancer of the Day”.

Todrick revealed: “She was acting like Mufasa [from the Lion King] just died twice!

“She was going through it, we didn’t… we had to stop production for a while to get her off the ground.

“I mean, it was very like Jack had just drifted to the ocean and Rose let go.”

The Greatest Dancer continues Saturday on BBC One at 7pm.

Paula Abdul Performs Greatest Hits at 2019 Billboard Music Awards — Watch https://briefnews.eu/paula-abdul-performs-greatest-hits-at-2019-billboard-music-awards-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/paula-abdul-performs-greatest-hits-at-2019-billboard-music-awards-watch/#respond Thu, 02 May 2019 05:23:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paula-abdul-performs-greatest-hits-at-2019-billboard-music-awards-watch/

Do call it a comeback: Paula Abdul closed out the 2019 Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday with a medley of her greatest hits, marking her first live performance at an award show in 29 years. Among the ear worms performed at the BBMAs were “Straight Up,” “Opposites Attract” and “Cold Hearted.”

This performance doubled as promotion for the former American Idol judge’s upcoming Las Vegas residency, Forever Your Girl, which begins Aug. 13 and is expected to run through Jan. 2020.

Hosted by Kelly Clarkson, this year’s Billboard Music Awards were held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena, a fittingly lavish venue for the caliber of performers on deck. Along with Abdul and Clarkson, Wednesday’s ceremony featured live performances from the likes of BTS, Ciara, Dan + Shay, Halsey, the Jonas Brothers, Khalid, Madonna, Maluma, Mariah Carey, Lauren Daigle, Panic! At the Disco, Taylor Swift and Tori Kelly. We also got a taste of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings,” but it was merely a pre-recorded performance from her Sweetener World Tour.

Hit PLAY on the (temporary) video below to watch footage of Abdul at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. Then grade the performance via our poll and drop a comment with your full review.

And while we’re discussing the performance, here’s the much-shared moment where Abdul accidentally nailed Julianne Hough in the throat with her hat:

Greatest Showman music SMASHED another record for GLOBAL domination https://briefnews.eu/greatest-showman-music-smashed-another-record-for-global-domination/ https://briefnews.eu/greatest-showman-music-smashed-another-record-for-global-domination/#respond Thu, 14 Mar 2019 23:26:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/greatest-showman-music-smashed-another-record-for-global-domination/

Musicals are back and bigger than ever. Official charts statistics just revealed an incredible new fact about the Hugh Jackman smash hit. Forget pop megastars like Ed Sheeran or K Pop sensations BTS, musicals dominated the worldwide charts for 2018. This is great news for fans of musical theatre and movie music and even better news for fans hoping for a sequel to their favourite movies like The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody.

There are four musical movie soundtracks in the global top ten for 2018.

Guess which one came out on top?

Bohemian Rhapsody may be the biggest movie musical biopic of all time, the biggest biopic of all time AND the biggest drama, but the movie soundtrack has to settle for an impressive seventh place.

Top of the pile, of course, is The Greatest Showman, which is still sitting at Number Four in the UK charts, an unbelievable 15 months after the film was released.

The Greatest Showman sold a whopping 3.5million units in 2018 alone.

A Star Is Born also performed incredibly well and sits at Number Four worldwide on 1.9million units.

Squeaking into the worldwide Top Ten in final place is Mamma Mia 2 Here We Go Again, proving that film fans love a good singalong more than anything.

So when can fans expect more sequels?

Hugh Jackman teased a Greatest Showman sequel on the red carpet at the BRITS, but there is considerable belief that a stage adaptation may be the priority.

Earlier this week a Queen video director started a frenzy by posting that plans for a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel was being “heavily discussed” by the filmmakers and the band. The producers were quick to shut down the rumours but hopes are still high.

A Star Is Born is very unlikely to have a sequel but there is still plenty of ABBA material to fuel a third film…

The Greatest Dancer: ‘Has she forgot?’ Alesha Dixon appearance leaves viewers baffled https://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-dancer-has-she-forgot-alesha-dixon-appearance-leaves-viewers-baffled/ https://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-dancer-has-she-forgot-alesha-dixon-appearance-leaves-viewers-baffled/#respond Sat, 23 Feb 2019 21:12:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-dancer-has-she-forgot-alesha-dixon-appearance-leaves-viewers-baffled/

The Greatest Dancer presenter has had electrifying chemistry with her co-host Jordan Banjo on the brand new BBC dance competition this year.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge has even revealed the show’s producers have given her and Jordan free reign to go “off-script” when it comes to their jokes and comments.

While the pair were having fun on tonight’s show however, viewers were more interested in Alesha’s outfit choice.

The star had appeared with what appeared to be just a jacket on, with her legs bare.

The figure-hugging red jacket fit the singer perfectly, and her toned pins were incredible on display.

But many took to Twitter to comment on the unusual outfit choice, even wondering if she’d forgotten the rest of her outfit.

One person asked: “Did Alesha Dixon forget the bottom part of her outfit tonight??? #GreatestDancer.”

“Did Alesha forget her bottoms. Not a good look for a family show. #GreatestDancer,” another complained.

A third joked: “Sooo excited by the #GreatestDancer final, not as excited as Alesha though – at least I’ve still got my trousers on!”

While a fourth praised: “Best thing tonight was Alesha Dixon legs on #GreatestDancer.”

“Has Alesha forgotten the trousers to go with her jacket?” a fifth added.

Viewers continued to comment on the choice, as they kept noticing the outfit throughout the final.

“#GreatestDancer Alesha seems to be missing half of her outfit,” one person noted.

Another quipped: “Dancing aside… did Alesha run out of time to get dressed…!! #GreatestDancer.”

“ffs Alesha – did you forget to put your bottoms on?!! #SackTheStylist #GreatestDancer,” a third said.

The Greatest Dancer is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.

BRITS 2019: Hugh Jackman sings The Greatest Showman on UK Tour in May: Tickets and info https://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/ https://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/#respond Wed, 20 Feb 2019 21:12:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/

The biggest night in UK music opened in grand style with the biggest star from the biggest musical movie on top a mountain of red jackets. It may be a ceremony to celebrate pop music, but the Greatest Showman soundtrack has dominated music charts around the world throughout 2018. Jackman performed The Greatest Show, just one of his numbers from the smash-hit movie. British fans will have another chance to see him do all this and much more when he returns to the O2 Arena plus major shows in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester in just a few months.

Hugh Jackman – The Man. The Music. The Show. Tour (yes, that is the rather dramatic way it is punctuated) will see the Tony Award-winning musicals legend take to the stage in Manchester, Birmingham and London in May 2019.

He will be accompanied by a live orchestra and give fans exactly what they want with a roof-raising array of songs from The Greatest Showmen, as well as his other huge box office musical smash, Les Miserables.

Fans should probably expect a tune or two from Oklahoma. Jackman made his UK musicals debut in the classic show back in 1998.

It was the moment he was introduced to the world as a budding star of stage AND screen.

The talented star also won a Tony Award in 2004 for his lead role in The Boy From Oz, the musical based on the life and music of Peter Allen.

Among many other recordings, Jackman performed on the soundtrack for animated film Happy Feet.
