The regulators purchased 148 metric tons of gold in the third quarter of 2018.

The figure indicates an increase of 22 percent against the same period last year, while some $ 6 billion dollars were spent on the precious metal.  Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, India, as well as Poland and Hungary were the leader among gold net buyers.

The reasons pushing Russia, Turkey and other countries facing US sanctions to buy more gold seem clear. But why are other countries bolstering their gold reserves and why do they find it necessary to diversify their holdings? RT talked to Claudio Grass, an independent precious metal advisory based out in Switzerland to find out why emerging economies are so active in stockpiling gold bullion.

RT: For years, Russia, China, India as well as many Asian countries have been stockpiling gold. More recently, countries like Poland and Hungary have begun to increase national gold reserves. What’s behind the move?

Claudio Grass: Let’s look at the core motivation that drives anyone to become an owner of physical gold. Whoever buys physical precious metals, be it an institution, an individual or as we see now, central banks from different countries, largely have the same reasons for doing so: They all want to regain independence and sovereignty. This is achieved by decoupling from a financial system that is unsustainable, overstretched and founded on nothing but faith in government. As this faith is shaken and public trust corroded, it is wise for any individual or institution to own real goods directly themselves, rather than be another investor in paper bets and hope for the best. It is also useful to remember that many central banks are in the habit of publicly promoting one position but acting on another. While they might exude confidence in the economy and bask in what they promote as the success of their reckless monetary policies, they fully understand that gold is really one of the best reliable hedges in times of economic turmoil. That’s why we see this massive buildup of physical gold stocks. In other words, when it comes to taking one’s investing cues from institutional actors; it might be wise to follow to the old adage “Do as I do, not as I say”.

RT: It seems clear why Russia is increasing gold reserves, but why are countries in Eastern Europe like Hungary and Poland doing it?

CG: Besides the above mentioned main reasons, I hear from my trusted friends and partners in Poland that there is a sizable opposition among the people to the EU Migration policies, which is only set to grow in the future. Social division and political friction is likely to increase, which is always the case when you force people to accept and even pay for something they don’t want. The same goes for the people of Hungary. What I find interesting when talking to people in the East, is that having lived under communism until roughly 25 years ago, they now see the same signs emerging. Unlike many of us in the West, they still remember history and rightfully dread its repetition, so they oppose centralized power, especially when it’s coming from Brussels. They know that absolute power corrupts absolutely and all the devastation and human suffering that comes with it. Their central banks are not blind to the rising tensions with the EU and the grave risks of further escalation. Thus, their gold buying strategy sounds reasonable to me and in accordance with the wisdom of Pericles, who said “the key is not to predict the future, but to prepare for it.”

RT: Are these countries bracing for a potential currency crisis?

CG: Of course. It is impossible to create wealth out of nothing, and even though that is an eternal and universal truth, it hasn’t stopped states from trying to do exactly that. Unfortunately, if history teaches anything, it is that we don’t learn from it. Now we are stuck in a system that came 35 years ago and took us from 20 percent interest rates to zero and negative rates. We are sitting on a gigantic bubble in terms of illusionary financial “wealth”, at the end of a long-term debt cycle and the bill for the massive credit spending of the past decade is about to come in. Central planners can manipulate the markets and the economy only for so long before their actions lead to a predictable bust, and that pattern is becoming apparent to more and more people. As public faith in governments collapses, so will the value of their currency.

RT: Why aren’t Western countries doing it? It seems they are only interested in gold-traded ETFs. Do they not believe in (physical) gold anymore?

CG: That’s simple: because people who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. For some time, this system worked because America was able to prop up the world economy with USD-IOU’s. It worked as long as Americans continued to consume as much as possible with money they didn’t have and just print out of thin air. However, once the debt is so huge that they can’t keep up the illusion for much longer, it is the beginning of the end.

When it comes to building physical gold positions, I think complacency and overconfidence are the key markers of the western approach to the future at the moment. We see this is the markets too, in the blunt denial of warnings and cold facts in favor of extending the rally with wishful thinking. The same, arguably, applies when opting for paper gold over physical. Realism has lost over mindless optimism, placing the East at a significant advantage during the next economic crash.

RT: What are the dangers of not having significant gold reserves?

CG: Lord Rees-Mogg summarized it once as follows: “Governments lie; bankers lie; even auditors sometimes lie: gold tells the truth.” Therefore, people who buy gold understand that it is their personal insurance when the illusion fades and the trust in the current institutions crumbles. The prudent approach is to become your own central bank, by building up your own reserves in the form of a hard, tangible, real physical good that has no counter-party risk and has proved its reliability by serving as real money for 5000 years.

Pokemon Go Grass Event update: New Niantic event has a MAJOR problem https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-grass-event-update-new-niantic-event-has-a-major-problem/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-grass-event-update-new-niantic-event-has-a-major-problem/#respond Sun, 07 May 2017 10:36:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-grass-event-update-new-niantic-event-has-a-major-problem/

‘s new Worldwide Bloom Grass Event isn’t going down well with fans.

The Pokemon Go  is supposed to make grass-type Pokemon appear with greater frequency.

Unfortunately, however, this doesn’t appear to be the case for many fans – myself included.

One fan told Twitter followers: “This grass event is pretty bad. 1. Barely no grass types for me. 2. Only lasts for 2 days!!!”

This was echoed by another player, who writes: “On my hour long walk, I saw one solitary grass type: Paras. No thank you.”

And another Twitter user said: “This grass event on #PokemonGo is c**p. There are no grass types about!”

I’m personally yet to encounter a single grass-type Pokemon, despite dropping a six-hour Lure earlier this weekend.

You can see the full list of Gen 1 and Gen 2 grass-type Pokemon below. How many have you encountered during the Pokemon Go Worldwide Bloom Grass Event?

Forbes is also reporting a lack of grass-type Pokemon in built-up city areas.

“Playing in downtown Chicago, Pokemon are never in short supply, but since this grass event started, I have seen no discernible change in spawns or what’s on my nearby tracker,” the post reads.

“I’ve never seen more than one or two grass Pokemon on my nearby at any given time, and many times there will be zero.

“While I know that an event like this doesn’t replace everything with grass spawns, in past events that focused on ghost, starter, water or pink Pokémon that had increased spawns, I feel like I saw a hell of a lot more than impact than this.”

It looks like the Worldwide Bloom event is making a difference in certain areas, but not everywhere.

Fans have also been disappointed by the lack of new Shiny Pokemon. Some speculated that a new Shiny would be introduced, following the release of Shiny Magikarp and Gyarados in the Water Festival.

The Pokemon Go Worldwide Bloom event runs until the evening of May 8. UK fans can expect it to last until around 8pm.

Grass-type Pokemon include Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, and Exeggutor from Gen 1, as well as Chikorita, Bayleef and Bellossom from Gen 2.

Other Grass event bonuses include the extension of Lure modules, although even this .

Niantic told Twitter followers: “To help you catch your favourite Grass-type Pokemon this weekend, Lure Modules will last for six hours for the entire weekend!”

Fans are also being encouraged to document findings using the Pokemon GO AR camera, before sharing findings on social media using the #PokemonGO.

Pokemon Go news: Grass Event bonus revealed, just the start of new wave of Niantic updates https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-grass-event-bonus-revealed-just-the-start-of-new-wave-of-niantic-updates/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-grass-event-bonus-revealed-just-the-start-of-new-wave-of-niantic-updates/#respond Fri, 05 May 2017 05:54:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-grass-event-bonus-revealed-just-the-start-of-new-wave-of-niantic-updates/

While the new Pokemon Go Grass Event – dubbed the Worldwide bloom Weekend – was announced earlier this week, Niantic have also been working on something which could create a much bigger impact in the long run.

Fans can enjoy at least one new bonus other then catching more Grass Types this weekend, with Lure Modules lasting for six hours for the entire weekend.

Other Pokemon Go news this week has confirmed a new partnership has been struck between Niantic and the Knight Foundation to provide engagement with community events in the US through augmented reality experiences.

“This partnership will foster discovery, bring communities together and promote engagement within public spaces by leveraging Niantic experiences and technologies including Ingress and Pokemon Go at select community events supported by The Knight Foundation,” a message from the Pokemon Go team explains.

“The collaboration will play out at community events in several cities, including Knight-sponsored Open Streets events.

“These temporarily close off car traffic so people can use streets for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing and socializing. The initiative will also tap unique facets of a city’s public spaces such as parks and libraries to bring together people of diverse backgrounds and build a sense of shared community.

“Over the next year, Niantic will collaborate with civic leaders in several cities where Knight Foundation supports community engagement. The initiative will work to enhance these events featuring special content within their augmented reality mobile games, Ingress and Pokémon GO.”

So while the scope of such an event will only affect a select group of Trainers, it has huge implications for fans across the globe.

That’s because Niantic could now start forming new relationships in the UK to create mini Pokemon Go events away from those run directly by Niantic.

The first event in the collaboration between Niantic and the Knight Foundation will be hosted on May 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of the Open Streets 704 event in a 2.5 mile area.

Niantic describes this first event as being “experimental” and will likely be a big test before other such partnerships may be formed in the future.

Fans of Pokemon GO can look forward to interacting with 16 PokeStops and two Gyms selected by the City of Charlotte at significant sites along the route.

John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, added this to the above statement: “We founded Niantic to give people the chance to connect with the world around them using technology and games in innovative ways.

“The partnership with The Knight Foundation is a great forum to explore how technology can drive civic engagement.”

For those people not able to take part in the special new event, the more widespread Pokemon Go Grass Event will be available for everyone to enjoy, starting later today.

Starting the afternoon of May 5, the Worldwide bloom will run until May 8, 2017, and will likely include some great bonuses for Trainers.

The new Pokemon Go update news was announced by Niantic yesterday, giving fans 24hrs to get ready for the new event.

“Professor Willow’s research into Pokemon habitats around the world has uncovered some interesting findings,” Niantic teases.

“His initial reports indicate that we’ll see an influx of Grass-type Pokemon sometime this weekend.

Britons turf out the lawn and replace it with plastic grass https://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/ https://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 08:38:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/

For the latest research shows that a desire for low maintenance gardens has seen a surge in the laying of synthetic turf along with building larger patios and putting down concrete and tarmac.

Industry figures show that out of the 86per cent of homes in the UK with gardens, as many as three in four have removed part of the original lawn as Britons develop a taste for al fresco living and demand a larger outdoor entertaining space.

The study highlights the fact that today’s garden trends increasingly flout the image of England’s green and pleasant land as described by poet William Blake.

Catalogue and online store Studio.co.uk carried out a survey among its customers after finding that people were spending more on accessories and furniture for patios than they were on plants and other gardening products.

Eight out of ten of home owners admitted to revamping their outdoor space in the past five years.

This trend to make more use of our open air environment, has resulted in a dramatic rise in demand for garden furniture, sun loungers, parasols, barbecues, gazebos, ornaments and chimineas according to the low priced retailer.

Seventy-three per cent said they owned rattan style furniture or loungers, 57 per cent had barbecues, 12 per cent tables with canopies while a third (34 per cent) have some form of outdoor lighting.

The report found that neighbourly get-togethers on the patio have soared at the expense of the formal dinner party. Almost nine in ten adults said they preferred entertaining guests outdoors rather than a more formal sit down meal around a dining table.

Almost half (46 per cent) of those surveyed said they would cook on the barbecue during summer months at least once a week or one in five (21 per cent) said weather permitting they would regularly eat meals outside.

Paul Kendrick, a spokesman for Studio.co.uk said: “I don’t know what William Blake who wrote those famous words would think but today more and more people are looking to create that extra room where they can eat and drink in the open air and relax in the sun as they seek to take advantage of a Mediterranean lifestyle and spend more time outdoors.

“There has been a definite change in how we use the space surrounding outside our homes.

Once the garden plants and lawn were our pride and joy, but now home owners prefer to pave over areas, lay down artificial turn or install decking as they seek to have that comfortable low maintenance living and seating area in the open air.

We can see from purchases this reflects a desire for a continental style of living.

Chelsea and England’s John Terry is one of those who has opted to replace his grass lawns and is reported to have spent £150,000 on artificial turf. Ruby Wax is another who prefers the appeal of the artificial grass while Tory MP Michael Gove is also a fan.

Scientists discover shortcut for turning grass into plane fuel https://briefnews.eu/scientists-discover-shortcut-for-turning-grass-into-plane-fuel/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-discover-shortcut-for-turning-grass-into-plane-fuel/#respond Mon, 03 Apr 2017 07:46:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-discover-shortcut-for-turning-grass-into-plane-fuel/

It takes millions of years for natural processes to convert plants into gasoline, but researchers at Ghent University have figured out how to do it much faster. By pre-treating grass to make it break down quicker, and then adding Clostridium bacteria similar to that found in your gut, they produced decane, one of the main ingredients of gasoline and jet fuel. While decane is a polluting fuel, commercial jets will need it for at least the next few decades, and the researchers believe their process is efficient enough to make it commercially feasible.

For their system to work, the scientists first treated the grass with a compound that broke it down and made it easier for bacteria to digest. They then treated it with an enriched Clostridium bacteria from the family that makes up the good bacteria in your gut, rather than the one that kills you. Fermentation much like that used for beer produced lactic acid and its derivatives, and further treatment yielded caproic acids. With further processing, that was converted into decane, a primary ingredient of gasoline and jet fuel.

As mentioned, decane and similar products aren’t very clean fuels (they produce CO2 when burned), but they still have a much higher energy density than, say, lithium batteries. As such, be the main fuel used in aviation for the foreseeable future, as jet planes need to be relatively light to get aloft.

For now, the process can only yield a few drops of biofuel, but the researchers claim the process is already relatively efficient, and with some more work, could possibly be made commercially feasible. Unlike corn, grass grows pretty much anywhere, so the ability to convert it into fuel on the cheap would be a huge step.

Snake in the grass: Escaped Florida cobra creates online hiss-teria https://briefnews.eu/snake-in-the-grass-escaped-florida-cobra-creates-online-hiss-teria/ https://briefnews.eu/snake-in-the-grass-escaped-florida-cobra-creates-online-hiss-teria/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 21:16:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snake-in-the-grass-escaped-florida-cobra-creates-online-hiss-teria/

The hunt is on for a two-foot long, highly venomous and deadly cobra that escaped from its enclosure in Ocala, Florida on Monday, slithering into the minds of a twitterati bewildered by the reptile’s strange disappearance.

The runaway serpent appears to be enjoying the new found fame, however. It seems the reptile has managed to create his own Twitter account, gaining over 1,100 followers since the account was activated shortly after it escaped on March 14.

The reptile’s owner called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) late Monday to inform them of the snake’s great escape. When a joint search by the FWC, Ocala Police and Marion County Fire Rescue turned up nothing, authorities alerted nearby residents.

In a statement released by the FWC, members of the public were urged not to try and apprehend the dangerous, cold-blooded creature.

“Residents in the area are urged to use caution until this snake has been captured. Although reclusive by nature, cobras are highly venomous and will strike out if they feel threatened,” it read.

As the search continues, FWC officials are hoping that the cold weather has kept the yellow and tan serpent in the house.

“It’s keeping the snake in a more confined area because in this cold weather they’re not going to get out and move,” local media Ocala.com reports FWC Officer Wayne Hargabus as saying.

Bizarrely, the cobra’s owner, Brian Purdy, has suggested that the snake may have been eaten by a large lizard he also owns. However, following an X-ray of the lizard by a vet, no snake was found.

FA pressured to reform as grass roots prioritised over Premier League: £50m funds at risk https://briefnews.eu/fa-pressured-to-reform-as-grass-roots-prioritised-over-premier-league-50m-funds-at-risk/ https://briefnews.eu/fa-pressured-to-reform-as-grass-roots-prioritised-over-premier-league-50m-funds-at-risk/#respond Sat, 04 Feb 2017 01:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fa-pressured-to-reform-as-grass-roots-prioritised-over-premier-league-50m-funds-at-risk/

A recent open letter sent by five former chairmen and chief executives of the FA demanding help from the Government over reform prompted the debate, with MPs looking to send a strong mandate to Sports Minister Tracy Crouch to take legislative measures later this year.

That could include appointing an independent body to give greater power within in the FA to grass roots football and the national team at the expense of the Premier and Football Leagues.

Separately, the FA have until April to demonstrate improved governance otherwise £50million of public funding is at risk.

Despite this latest development, the FA insists it is still on track.

“We are working to the Government’s timeline for implementation later in the year,” a spokesperson said.
