The 62nd Grammy Awards are finally upon us. But before we can enjoy the biggest night in music (CBS, 8/7c), we need to get through the biggest carpet in music.

This year’s official Grammys red carpet pre-show is streaming live on the Recording Academy’s Twitter account. Click here to check it out, beginning at 5 pm.

Lizzo is entering Sunday’s Alicia Keys-hosted ceremony with the highest number of nominations, eight total, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish — the youngest artist ever to be nominated in the Grammys’ four biggest categories in a single year — and Lil Nas X follow closely behind with six nominations each. Other multi-nominated artists include Ariana Grande, H.E.R. and Finneas O’Connell (Eilish’s older brother and songwriting partner) with five nods apiece.

All of the aforementioned nominees will also take the stage for unforgettable Grammy performances. Additional high-profile performers include Aerosmith and Run-DMC, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, Billy Ray Cyrus, BTS, Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers, and Rosalia.

This year’s list of Grammy presenters is also loaded with big names, including Ava DuVernay, Bebe Rexha, Billy Porter, Brandi Carlile, Common, Cynthia Erivo, Dua Lipa, Keith Urban, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and Trevor Noah. Ozzy Osbourne, who recently revealed that he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, will also appear on stage. (The Prince of Darkness was most recently spotted performing alongside Post Malone at the 2019 American Music Awards.)

Which artists are you rooting for tonight? Drop a comment with your picks below.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

7 artists who don’t deserve their 2019 Grammy nominations — sorry https://briefnews.eu/7-artists-who-dont-deserve-their-2019-grammy-nominations-sorry/ https://briefnews.eu/7-artists-who-dont-deserve-their-2019-grammy-nominations-sorry/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 12:10:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/7-artists-who-dont-deserve-their-2019-grammy-nominations-sorry/ cardi b post maloneRich Fury/Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Music is easily one of the most subjective topics to debate — which places the Grammy Awards’ Academy members in a constant crossfire.

Major award shows are bound to make mistakes. It’s unavoidable. Our challenge, then, is to sort through the uproar and find nominations that future generations will look back on with either rage or confusion.

Here are seven artists whose nominations seem at least somewhat undeserving, in no particular order.

Cardi B had a monumental year, but “Invasion of Privacy” isn’t album of the year material.

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

It’s certainly encouraging to see the Grammys hand five nominations to Cardi B, an unapologetic, unconventional firecracker — whose success reflects the significant shift towards rap and hip hop for modern music fans.

But that doesn’t mean her debut studio album, “Invasion of Privacy,” necessarily deserves the high praise.

While the project hits some very high points — “I Like It,” for example, is perfectly at home in the record of the year category — it was inconsistent as a whole. “Invasion of Privacy” shows great promise for the young, chart-topping rapper, and proves she’s here to stay. But popularity and easy listening doesn’t always equate to “album of the year” potential.

“The Middle” is more annoying than award-winning.

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

“The Middle” — the earworm collaboration between DJ Zedd and singer Maren Morris, which you’ve probably heard in a Target commercial — secured three nominations for the 2019 Grammys.

While the song’s commercial success somewhat excuses this lapse in judgment, it would have made more sense to stop at the nod for best pop duo/group performance — without letting it slither into two of the most prestigious categories: record of the year” and song of the year.

Post Malone didn’t need an album of the year nomination.

Joe Scarnici/Getty Images

To be sure, Post Malone has a talent for hit-making. Giving “Rockstar” a “Record of the Year” nomination makes perfect sense; it’s a perfect song.

But Post Malone doesn’t offer the kind of nuanced, relevant, boundary-pushing music that we’ve come to expect from rappers at the top of their game — and he doesn’t want to. He has explicitly warned his fans not to expect “real s—” from him.

“If you’re looking for lyrics, if you’re looking to cry, if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to hip-hop,” he said last year, which is something a person would only say if they’re benefiting from a layered, historically significant genre that they fundamentally don’t understand, a person who’s ignorant about black music and culture.

“Beerbongs & Bentleys” reflects this attitude. It’s an album comprised of mediocre songwriting with catchy hooks and some well-placed, high-profile features. It’s certainly not the “Album of the Year.”

Lorde Responds to Grammy Controversy https://briefnews.eu/lorde-responds-to-grammy-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/lorde-responds-to-grammy-controversy/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2018 15:19:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lorde-responds-to-grammy-controversy/ One of the many mini-controversies of Sunday night’s Grammy Awards was the shafting of Lorde, who was the only female nominee for Album of the Year, and yet also the only of those nominees not invited to do a solo performance at the ceremony. The people who made that decision unsurprisingly whiffed the response; the show’s producer, Ken Ehrlich, shrugged, “There’s no way we can really deal with everybody,” and Recording Academy president Neil Portnow advised women who want to be part of the industry to “step up because I think they would be welcome,” prompting scores of female singers, songwriters, producers, and engineers to slap themselves in the forehead for never thinking to “step up.” Problem solved!

But Lorde herself chose to go with a positive message about the evening. In a handwritten note, published as a full-page advertisement in The New Zealand Herald, the 21-year-old singer/songwriter/producer wrote to her fans, “Last night I saw a lot of crazy & wonderful things. I just wanted to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for loving & embracing Melodrama the way you did. My nomination belongs to you. Thank you, also, for believing in female musicians. You set a beautiful precedent!”

The paper’s managing editor, Shayne Currie, shared the ad on Twitter:

Lorde will do a spring swing through America, beginning March 1 in Milwaukee, and is also set to play a handful of European festival in the summer.

He took home the trophies for Album of the year (24K Magic), record of the year (the title track), and song of the year (“That’s What I Like”), and hey, one could say giving 24K Magic a trophy in a category that includes DAMN. and “Awaken, My Live!” is kind of like, oh, I dunno, giving one to Adele’s already forgotten 25 when it was up against Lemonade, or to Taylor Swift’s 1989 when it was up against To Pimp A Butterfly, but who are we to judge. Awards are stupid!

  • Beyoncé and Jay-Z looked stunning as they headed to a pre-Grammy party on Saturday.
  • In one photo Beyoncé shared on Instagram, a woman looks dumbstruck as they pass by.
  • The picture has gone viral, mostly because people find her expression highly relatable.
  • See the epic shot below (along with other flawless photos of Beyoncé and Jay-Z).

Beyoncé and Jay-Z kicked off the 2018 Grammys early when they celebrated at music producer Clive Davis’s pre-award show party on Saturday night. When Beyoncé shared a series of photos from the night on Instagram, there was an instantly meme-able shot spotted by fans.

The picture shows Beyoncé and Jay-Z holding hands and walking through a hallway — and a woman nearby is staring in shock at the couple with her eyes wide, mouth agape, and looking generally speechless.

The photo was part of an Instagram album Beyoncé shared. You can swipe through the album below:

Virtually everyone found the image of the unnamed woman highly relatable. From reporters to media outlets and regular fans, everyone was tweeting and re-sharing the picture with a similar message: “Same.”

Both Beyoncé and Jay-Z were noticeably absent from the Grammys red carpet on Sunday night, but these photos from their glamorous Saturday evening are more than making up for it.

Jay-Z is the most-nominated artist of the night, with a total of eight Grammy nominations. Beyoncé appears on one of his nominated singles, “Family Feud,” which lost the award for best rap/sung performance to Kendrick Lamar’s “Loyalty” (featuring Rihanna).

  • Kesha performed “Praying” at the 2018 Grammy Awards Sunday night on CBS.
  • It was the most powerful performance of the night. The song was written after her career stalled when she accused her producer Dr. Luke of sexual assault.
  • She returned in 2017, and her album “Rainbow” charted at No. 1.
  • The song now has particular resonance with the #MeToo movement.
  • Kesha performed it with the help of Cyndi Lauer, Camila Cabello, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, and Bebe Rexha. They were all dressed in white.

Here’s Your Full List of Grammy Nominations https://briefnews.eu/heres-your-full-list-of-grammy-nominations/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-your-full-list-of-grammy-nominations/#respond Tue, 28 Nov 2017 16:28:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-your-full-list-of-grammy-nominations/ Yes, it’s that time of the year when the news is all awards all the time, so on top of the winners of last night’s Gothams, we now have Emmy nominations to reckon with. The Recording Academy leaned heavily on hip-hop superstars this year, with Jay-Z grabbing eight nominations for his album 4:44 and songs from it, while Kendrick Lamar and DAMN. picked up seven noms. Bruno Mars nabbed six nominations; Childish Gambino, Khalid, and SZA are all nominated five times.

There were, of course, some noteworthy omissions: only an Album of the Year for Lorde’s sophomore effort Melodrama, Ed Sheeran relegated to the Pop field only, and no love at all for Harry Styles. And while Taylor Swift picked up a pair of one-off nominations, her new album Reputation wasn’t released within the October 2016-September 2017 qualification period, so it won’t be eligible until next year’s go-round.
