The ice dancers soaked up the show tour environment in two gruelling months spent on the cross-country Thank You Canada Tour. And they have the technical savvy that's earned them three world championship medals in their dozen years together.

On Friday night, they were the proverbial full package, winning the short dance at the Canadian figure skating championships in their first competition in four months.

"This week we're here just to show ourselves, we're having fun showing off, if you will," Weaver said. "We've worked so hard, we have so much experience in front of audiences, and we've done our homework with the technical rules and now we get to let it loose with no worries. This is a great start for us."

The skaters from Waterloo, Ont., scored 85.19 points for their sizzling skate to "Libertango."

Skating to please a panel of judges once again was a "little bit different," Poje said.

"When you're out there in the show, you have thousands of judges that you try to express to everyone on every side, and try to pick your moments, whereas this one you're trying to just be in your moment and try to really show the entire program to the best of your ability."

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are second (83.08).

Gabrielle Daleman is the leader after the women's short program, her first event since taking a break to focus on her mental health.

And Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro won the pairs short program.

Weaver and Poje have skated in the shadow of two-time Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir for virtually their entire career. But on Friday, Weaver, dressed in a gauzy rose-gold dress, and Poje in a shirt, vest, and black slacks, enchanted the crowd at Harbour Station arena with their sizzling tango.

Having only to focus on two performances this week is a welcome break from the Thank You tour grind that saw them do 28 shows across Canada.

"There were moments we were just exhausted," Weaver said. "But we always came out the other side thinking 'You know what? We're doing this for a reason, and that's to learn from all of it' . . . for ourselves it was something to push through and enjoy at the same time."

Weaver and Poje are poised to capture their third Canadian title. They've been perennial runners-up to Virtue and Moir, capturing gold during Virtue and Moir's two-year hiatus.

"We're not going to lie, obviously it would be amazing," Poje said. "But we're not here really for the medals. We wanted to go out there and show the work that we've done but also the love that we have for these programs, and how proud we are of each other and our team."

They'll be pushed in Saturday's free dance by Gilles and Poirier, who edged Weaver and Poje for silver at last year's national championships, one of four silvers they've won at the event.

Skating to "Angelica's Tango," Gilles and Poirier earned an appreciative roar from the crowd.

The two joked that they slip into made-up characters for the tango. Gilles calls herself "Rosella." Poirier is "Guido."

"It's really just the amount of training that we've done and the amount of thought that we've put behind this program," Poirier said on their solid skate. "Every day we come and in and try to think about our characters, and what we're trying to portray, what each moment means in the program.

"I think over time we've come to learn every single nook and cranny of the program and allowed the characters to shine through everything that we're doing."

Daleman, a 21-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., scored 70.18 points for her program to "Habanera," by Georges Bizet.

The 2017 world bronze medallist and a two-time Canadian champion announced in October she was withdrawing from Skate Canada International to focus on her mental health. She also withdrew from her second Grand Prix assignment, the NHK Trophy in Japan, effectively ending her fall competition season.

Larkyn Austman of Vancouver was second in the short program, scoring 64.53, while Veronik Mallet of Sept-Iles, Que., was third with 60.55.

Skate Canada officials said earlier this week Daleman preferred not to speak to media until after Saturday's free program. She's been open in the past discussing her battles with an eating disorder and a learning disability.

Daleman was part of the Canadian squad that won gold in the team event at the Pyeongchang Olympics. But she fell three times during a disastrous long program in the singles event and burst into tears when the music stopped.

There was no need for the IDF to raid the Palestinian news agency office in Ramallah and use force and tear gas to seize CCTV footage, as they could have asked for it and got it, WAFA editor Maher Abukhater has said.

Israeli soldiers raided the office of the Palestinian news agency WAFA in the West Bank on Monday. According to the agency, soldiers fired tear gas and seized footage from surveillance cameras while searching the building.

Israel gave no reason for the raid, but it is believed the action is connected to the IDF’s search for the perpetrator of an attack on Sunday which left seven Israelis wounded.

RT spoke to Maher Abukhater, English desk editor at the Palestinian news agency, who was there at the time of the raid and described how events unfolded.

RT: How unusual is such a raid?

Maher Abukhater: It is unusual. We don’t expect that IDF would raid media outlets in Ramallah, let alone anywhere else. There are international resolutions and laws that protect journalists and media outlets, particularly if they are official media as well. This raid was totally unexpected.

We were watching what was going on in the street below us. But we never believed that they would really enter the building and eventually use tear gas inside our own newsrooms.

MA: They can investigate it, sure. They can follow up on it, definitely. But our office is really far from where the incident has happened. And they started an operation in the morning in Ramallah starting from the north and moving gradually into the city. And they were almost few meters away from the presidential headquarters.

I am not sure what they are going to find there. They claimed that they were looking for whatever the security cameras available to take the footage. I am not sure what makes them believe the perpetrators were even in that area.

RT: This raid gives the impression that Israeli soldiers can storm any building, any time. Is that the status quo in the West Bank?

MA: It does happen repeatedly. These armed raids are continuous throughout the West Bank. In Ramallah it is not too often. There are usually confrontations on the outskirts, near the checkpoints. But to enter into the city itself, normally they do that if they want to come and arrest somebody. But they don’t come in with such a force, not in a broad daylight, they usually do that at night. This is quite uncommon to really see such a thing happening in Ramallah.

They could have told us that they want the footage, directly or indirectly through the Palestinian officers in liaison with the Israelis. They could have done that and the footage would have been delivered to them…

There was no need at all for what happened – no need to enter the building and to take them by force, they used intimidation and force… entered the rooms where the servers were, took the footage without any approval from the administration of WAFA.

We’ve seen an escalation in the attacks recently in the West Bank. Stalemate in the peace process, lack of hope, people not seeing prospects for any peace happening anytime soon. The pressure is mounting on the Palestinians from all sides. The things seem to be changing on the ground, affecting the situation on the ground.

As you might imagine, you can’t just grab extra-soft sea creatures like jellyfish or octopuses when you want to study them. Not if you want them to remain intact, anyway. Thankfully, researchers at Harvard’s Wyss Institute have a far more delicate solution. They’ve created a robot arm (the RAD sampler) whose petal-like fingers can quickly form a ball shape around an animal, capturing it without risking any harm. It’s simpler than it looks — it uses just a single motor to drive the entire jointed structure, so it’s easy to control and easier still to repair if something breaks.

To date, the arm has only been useful for catch-and-release experiments. In the future, though, biologists could outfit the machine with cameras and sensors to collect information about whatever’s inside the sphere, whether it’s the material composition, size or the genetic sequencing. If that happens, researchers could study fragile undersea critters in their native habitats and glean insights that wouldn’t be available above water or with dead specimens.

A cheerleading team tosses their friend up in the air to grab delicious mangoes from a tree branch in a heart-stoppingly intense video.

Showing off their athletic abilities outside an arena, this team of young Filipino athletes spotted a nice-looking tree full of mangoes and decided to practice their moves… to collect fruit.

According to the author of the video, Jed Nagales, it was the first time he and his cheerleading and dance group had ever dared to pick mangoes this way.

In the video shot in Camarines Sur in the Philippines, five daredevils did not waste any time to think and launched their friend, Dannielle Sasaluya, up in the air to grab them some delicious mangoes.

In an absolutely breathtaking jump that created a vivid illusion that she would never get caught , Dannielle managed to reach the branch with delicious fruit seconds before she fell back into the supporting arms of her friends.

“This is our unique way of getting mangoes,” the video title said.

The circus-like air acrobatics of this cheerleading team gathered instant attention as soon as the video was published on Facebook on June 17 and has already got almost 3 million views from people who enjoy the adrenaline rush.
