Bridget Regan (Jane the Virgin) and Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful) are set as the leads in a Southern Gothic mystery series that will air on Spectrum before getting a linear run on Paramount Network.

Penned by Rodes Fishburne (Blood & Oil) and tentatively titled Paradise Lost, the series follows Frances, a psychiatrist (Regan) who moves with her family from California to her husband’s (Hartnett) hometown in Mississippi only to uncover shameful secrets that irrevocably change the lives of everyone involved.

Additional casting for the 10-episode series includes Barbara Hershey (Once Upon a Time), Nick Nolte (Graves), Gail Bean (Snowfall), Danielle Deadwyler (The Haves and the Have Nots) and Shane McRae (Sneaky Pete).

Fishburne and fellow writer/executive producer Arika Lisanne Mittman (Dexter) will serve as co-showrunners. John Lee Hancock, David Kanter, Jeff Okin and Romeo Tirone are also EPs.

At Paramount Network, Paradise Lost will join a scripted roster that includes Yellowstone (Season 2 premieres Wednesday, June 19) and the upcoming Darren Star series, Emily in Paris. Spectrum, meanwhile, is of course the home to the Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba-led Bad Boys spinoff, L.A’s Finest.

‘Crimson Peak’ Blu-ray From Arrow Video Gives Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic Romance the Love It Deserves https://briefnews.eu/crimson-peak-blu-ray-from-arrow-video-gives-guillermo-del-toros-gothic-romance-the-love-it-deserves/ https://briefnews.eu/crimson-peak-blu-ray-from-arrow-video-gives-guillermo-del-toros-gothic-romance-the-love-it-deserves/#respond Sat, 01 Sep 2018 17:32:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crimson-peak-blu-ray-from-arrow-video-gives-guillermo-del-toros-gothic-romance-the-love-it-deserves/ crimson peak blu-ray

Crimson Peak suffered at the box office, primarily because of poor marketing. The gloriously gothic romance was sold as a straight-up horror film, and that’s not exactly what Guillermo del Toro was delivering. A vocal cult following for the film has sprung up since the theatrical release, and now Arrow Video is set to distribute a Crimson Peak Blu-ray that gives the movie the attention it deserves.

Crimson Peak

I love Crimson Peak with every fiber of my being. It’s a creepy, ornate, romantic film loaded with ghosts, gore and big billowing dresses. I know the film was poorly marketed, but that doesn’t mean the movie itself is bad. In fact, I dare say this is my favorite Guillermo del Toro movie. Mia Wasikowska is an aspiring novelist who falls for a very mysterious, very pale baronet Tom Hiddleston. Hiddelston takes her from America back to his huge, spooky, crumbling English mansion Allerdale Hall. Wasikowska soon discovers Allerdale Hall is chock-full of ghosts, but the specters are the least of her problems. She also has to deal with her husband’s sister, played with gleeful over-the-top menace by Jessica Chastain.

Enter The Flesh Again Is A Stylishly Gothic Action-Adventure Journey Through Reincarnation https://briefnews.eu/enter-the-flesh-again-is-a-stylishly-gothic-action-adventure-journey-through-reincarnation/ https://briefnews.eu/enter-the-flesh-again-is-a-stylishly-gothic-action-adventure-journey-through-reincarnation/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 08:34:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/enter-the-flesh-again-is-a-stylishly-gothic-action-adventure-journey-through-reincarnation/ flesh1.jpg

Behind Enter The Flesh Again‘s striking title and charming aesthetic is an action-adventure through life, death, and rebirth, a reincarnation journey that takes you to the realm beyond death and pits your powers and spirit guides against evil spirits and nightmare manifestations.

flesh2.jpg

As Aarya, you traverse a number of realms, from the physical world where you can purchase upgrades with wisdom points while living in your numerous reincarnated forms, to the Bardo, a state of existence between life and death where you battle the dark spirits and demons manifested by your mind. To battle these mental demons, you can unleash various skills like “Flaming Spirit” and the fireballs of “Inner Fire”, or rely on your spirit animal guides such as fearsome bear companion.

In the physical realm, you’ll find yourself in all manner of creatures, living through the life cycle of fauna and flora or even “hellbeings” that exist in other realms. By existing through their life cycles, through mating and old age, through assisting others or finding sacred texts, and other tasks, you can add to your wisdom points to unlock new powers and upgrades. You’ll need all the upgrades and wisdom you can gather to battle the threats within the Bardo, monstrous dangers that range from twisted versions of Aarya herself to various demons and hellspawn.

Enter The Flesh Again is still in development. You can follow the game’s progress through developer Seething Swarm’s devlog and on Twitter and Facebook.

Darkest Dungeon breaks Switch players with gothic stress on January 18 https://briefnews.eu/darkest-dungeon-breaks-switch-players-with-gothic-stress-on-january-18/ https://briefnews.eu/darkest-dungeon-breaks-switch-players-with-gothic-stress-on-january-18/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 20:02:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/darkest-dungeon-breaks-switch-players-with-gothic-stress-on-january-18/

One of the best and most atmospheric role-playing games is making the leap from PC to Nintendo’s hybrid Switch handled/home console. Red Hook Studios made the announcement today and confirmed it will hit the system January 18 for $ 25. You can also get the expansions, The Crimson Court for $ 10 and The Shieldbreaker for $ 4. Darkest Dungeon is only available for digital purchase, so you’ll find it in Nintendo’s eShop on the release date.

Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based strategy RPG that has players doing runs with a team of explorers and treasure hunters. The deeper players go into the depths of a gothic mansion, the more mental stress the heroes experience. Too much stress could inflict a negative status effect on a hero, which may make them less effective. The idea is to manage these symptoms to get as far as possible. We talked to the developer about it in 2015, and you can read our interview right here.

Red Hook has already sold 2 million copies of Darkest Dungeon on PC, consoles, and iPad, and now it is expanding to one of the hottest platforms for indie games. The studio is even including the touchscreen controls on this version for people who play in handheld mode.

The developer is also planning to launch The Color of Madness expansion on Switch, but it hasn’t determined a release date for that third piece of downloadable content.

Finally, Red Hook has confirmed that it is not working on an Android version.

“We don’t have any current plans for an Android version,” reads the studio’s FAQ. “I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s the truth.”

As someone with both a Switch and an Android smartphone, I’ll take the Switch version, please!

Survive Turn By Turn In Gothic Strategy Game Alder’s Blood https://briefnews.eu/survive-turn-by-turn-in-gothic-strategy-game-alders-blood/ https://briefnews.eu/survive-turn-by-turn-in-gothic-strategy-game-alders-blood/#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2017 16:10:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/survive-turn-by-turn-in-gothic-strategy-game-alders-blood/ alder.png

Amid graveyards and decrepit hamlet alleys, skillful hunters brave the oppressive darkness in search of monsters. Very much inspired by Bloodborne and XCOM, Alder’s Blood presents a bloody hand-drawn world of lurking beasts and well-armed warriors, engaging, not in fast-paced combat, but turn-based skirmishes where only precise planning can save you and fear will lead to a brutal and certain death.

Across a world map of villages, cemeteries, and shadowy woods, Alder’s Blood pits your party of master hunters against the ravenous beasts that threaten man. Summoned by peasants, you must prepare, carefully traverse, and then battle; however, the looming fear of RNG and missed attacks is not present here. Developer Shockwork Games wants every turn and tactic to be one of cautious certainty. A point-blank shot will definitely hit your target; deciding when to attack, when to stay hidden in shadows, and how to synergize your party’s skills are the tactical decisions you need to consider.

Yet even the best hunters, with the best weapons and skills, can be destroyed if they’re reckless. Fear is the enemy, literally in Alder’s Blood; every hunter produces a scent when fearful, a scent that can carry on the wind, and draw enemies to your location before you’re ready to fight. Watch the direction of the wind on the battlefield to stay hidden until you’re ready to unleash your ambush.

Outside of combat, you’ll be able to scout unknown terrain for NPCs and villages, experiment on captured prey to better understand your enemy, and upgrade your hunters’ equipment and skills.

Alder’s Blood is currently in development for PC, and you can follow its progress through the game’s site, TIGForum devlog, and Twitter page.

‘The Beguiled’ Director Sofia Coppola on Making Gothic Drama and Avoiding the Original [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/the-beguiled-director-sofia-coppola-on-making-gothic-drama-and-avoiding-the-original-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/the-beguiled-director-sofia-coppola-on-making-gothic-drama-and-avoiding-the-original-interview/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2017 17:16:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-beguiled-director-sofia-coppola-on-making-gothic-drama-and-avoiding-the-original-interview/ Coppola pic

With The Beguiled, Sofia Coppola has made her first adaptation and remake. The filmmaker’s retelling has little in common with Don Siegel’s 1971 film, though. Coppola was more interested in adapting Thomas P. Cullinan‘s A Painted Veil than remaking Siegel’s movie, which features a drastically different depiction of the all-girls school, led by Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman), and their guest, the soldier (Colin Farrell).

Coppola’s compassion as a filmmaker brings out different themes and ideas from Cullinan’s story. The characters feel more real, which makes the few sinister turns in The Beguiled more visceral. There’s the beauty we expect from Coppola, but she also brings fear and terror. The filmmaker behind The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, and The Bling Ring recently told us about crafting her southern gothic film during a brief conversation.

Below, check out our Sofia Coppola interview.

Los Angeles was such a major part of your last two movies. How was the experience of getting to focus on primarily one location with The Beguiled?

I loved it, especially when I think about The Bling Ring and running all over to so many locations. It was so weird to be in just one place and to just focus on the acting and the story. I really loved working that way.

You shot in the house in New Orleans, right?

Yeah, we went and shot in New Orleans. It was actually two houses we shot. We shot the interiors in town in New Orleans, and then we went outside of town to Napoleonville to shoot in the plantation, which was a real plantation.

Was there anything from your research that influenced the house or costumes?

We did a lot with the sets and the costumes, to just kind of transform the place. I can’t think of one in particular. They had to cover up the light switches and things.

The use of natural light is great, by the way.

Philippe Le Sourd, the cinematographer, I think did such a great job to make it feel real and authentic to the time, with natural light and the candles. We used more candles than they would have at that time, but we wanted to make it authentic to that time.

I know you two haven’t worked together before. What sort of atmosphere did you two want to create?

We spent a lot of time together with the art department and costume department to decide about the look of it. I wanted it to feel like this gauzy, feminine, soft world that doesn’t seem threatening at all, so when the story shifts, it comes out of nowhere.

From the start of the original film, the house feels threatening. Did you look at Don Siegel’s movie for inspiration at all?

No,  I knew about the story from the original film, and then I tried to put it out of my mind and go back to the book and reimagine it in my own way, so I tried to forget about it. I love the original movie, but it’s so different. This is really the take looking from the other side. I wanted it to be very soft and feminine, starting in this world of an all-girls school, as opposed to his, which started with the soldier meeting them. I’m going to have to watch it again, now that I’m done [with this]. I haven’t seen it in a while.

This being your first genre piece, were there any specific ways you wanted to build tension with the camera?

Yeah, it was interesting to think about how to do something in the southern gothic genre but still felt like my style. I think what I like about the story is how it twists and goes in an unexpected direction, so it was about how to do that visually, so in the beginning, it’s not threatening and it looks like a fantasy. Then it turns into something unexpected, I think.

Working in that southern gothic genre, did your process change at all or ever feel different?

I think when I was writing the script it was different because it was a more intricate plot than I’ve ever been used to. I pushed myself to write more dialogue and embrace a little bit of gore, just do things I haven’t done before.

What about this story did you think required more dialogue than your past work?

Well, the story is so much about communications between them and the sparring. A lot of it is in looks, too. You always have to give yourself challenges, I think.

I don’t think the movie’s final image is going to leave me anytime soon.

Thank you.

For that final piece of music, you sent [Pheonix frontman] Thomas [Mars] photos while shooting so he could start working on that final piece of music, correct?

I think when we filmed that scene, I sent him the footage. But when we started to shoot, I sent him a few pictures of the girls on set in front of the porch, just to give them an idea of the atmosphere. Then I sent them that shot, and then they sent me that music. They sent a few things, but that one worked so well. I was glad to have that tension.

While you’re writing, do you have your final shots very clearly in mind or are they sometimes dictated by location?

A lot of times the way the scenes are set up are by the location, but that image of the last scene I wanted to see them through the bars, so I had that in mind while writing, hopefully to go out with a strong image. Even just being in the location then [for other scenes], and seeing those beautiful trees, I knew I’d want to have a little girl sitting in a tree, to really show the location and how lush it is there. Another image I knew I really wanted to see was Nicole Kidman holding the candelabra when she asks for the anatomy book. That was something I was excited to see.

Did you write the script with her in mind?

I did. I wrote the script with her in mind. I was picturing Nicole Kidman as Ms. Martha, so I was really happy she said yes to doing the part. Then she brought so much more then. It was exactly what I imagined, but more. She just brought so much more to it.

Southern Gothic Fashion in Pop Culture https://briefnews.eu/southern-gothic-fashion-in-pop-culture/ https://briefnews.eu/southern-gothic-fashion-in-pop-culture/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2017 22:18:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/southern-gothic-fashion-in-pop-culture/ The Southern Gothic genre is a rich space for authors and filmmakers to play where the grotesque, eccentric, and atmospheric thrive. Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, her pastel-colored remake of Clint Eastwood’s film of the same name, hit theaters this weekend. We recently read an interview with the film’s costume designer Stacey Battat, who discussed the intricate details Coppola wanted for the movie’s fashion (about 90 percent of the costumes were made by hand, for example). Inspired by Coppola’s sartorial choices, we created a visual diary that shows how other directors styled actors and performers in Southern Gothic-inspired stories throughout pop culture.

‘Fallen London’ and the secret to writing an infinite gothic game https://briefnews.eu/fallen-london-and-the-secret-to-writing-an-infinite-gothic-game/ https://briefnews.eu/fallen-london-and-the-secret-to-writing-an-infinite-gothic-game/#respond Sat, 27 May 2017 15:51:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fallen-london-and-the-secret-to-writing-an-infinite-gothic-game/

Writing a video game is nothing like penning a novel. But writing a never-ending, nonlinear, text-driven video game about a hellish alternate London stuffed with gothic intrigue and nearly a decade of backstory? That’s a different beast altogether.

“Novels follow protagonists, but in Fallen London, the protagonist is the player, and they’re a mystery to us,” Failbetter Games narrative director Chris Gardiner says. “While we know some things about them — mostly the decisions they’ve made in the game — there’s still a lot we can’t assume. Novels have a plot; there’s no spinal plot to Fallen London, no single story we’re telling and will finish. We’re exploring a setting, establishing its status quo, then letting the player kick bits of it over. Novels are complete, while Fallen London is a living game. We add new stories and events to it constantly.”

Fallen London debuted as a free browser game in 2009, though back then it was called Echo Bazaar. It’s still available in browser form, but it’s also on iOS and Android, and it’s spawned a successful spinoff mobile franchise starting with Sunless Sea. Just this week, Failbetter announced it would place renewed focus on Fallen London, tying up some of its stories and systems.

Fallen London is a deep choose-your-own-adventure game with no moving pictures to guide players into new worlds. Instead, it’s text-based, allowing fans to decide how they’ll react to certain scenarios while they wander around a Victorian version of London that was pulled into an underground dimension by a swarm of bats.

Fallen London blends Lovecraftian monsters with the eloquence of Poe and a dark sense of wit that’s entirely unique to the game world. Here’s a taste of its tone, courtesy of Gardiner:

There’s a scene in a story called The Gift where the player ventures under the royal palace and learns what’s become of Queen Victoria’s children. The player ends up disguised as a servant at a banquet. They’ve been instructed to keep their back to it, and under no circumstances to turn around.

There’s a mirror in front of them. And in the mirror, fine lords and ladies are eating an elegant dinner. But the sounds you hear behind you are very different. Slobbering. Cracking bones. The thud of wet meat on the table. The mirror is lying. Three times we ask the player if they want to turn around, and warn that the consequences will be terrible. It’s entirely their choice. And because they’re our players, they generally turn. Bless them.

Gardiner is the narrative director on Fallen London, but he isn’t putting this deliciously grotesque universe together himself. The entire project is the brainchild of Alexis Kennedy, an acclaimed video-game writer and designer who’s helping build the new Dragon Age. Kennedy founded Failbetter in 2010, as Fallen London was gaining a sizable cult following, and over the following years, he tended to the game’s story alongside a small team of writers and fans-turned-employees. He left Failbetter in 2016 on good terms, placing Fallen London in Gardiner’s hands.

“His were very big shoes to fill,” Gardiner says. “Failbetter was his baby, and he was involved in every aspect of it. Even when his duties meant he didn’t have much time to write content, Alexis was always the arbiter and guardian of Fallen London‘s lore and tone. Maintaining that tone has been a crucial priority for us, and I was concerned about it. I’d been head writer for a while, so the team wasn’t left without a lead experienced in writing for Fallen London. And, fortunately, Alexis left us a game consisting of hundreds of thousands of words of stories, which is as comprehensive an authority as you can get.”

Today, the Fallen London team maintains a living document of every event and arc in the game, constantly growing it as new activities are introduced. The doc is streamlined, containing only basic, businesslike information about any particular event — and still, it’s 131 pages long.

“Every time we write a new story, we add to it, like the ever-expanding occult tome of a very well-organized sorcerer who believes highlighters and Post-It notes are true magic,” Gardiner says.

If necessary, writers can also dive directly into the game’s back end and search for specific text or mechanical elements, though given the size of the story, this is a laborious process.

“Increasingly, we rely on the expertise of the writers,” Gardiner says. “Each writer tends to become an authority on different parts of the lore.”

There are four writers working on Fallen London, including Gardiner, plus an analyst and a handful of freelancers who chip in as needed. They operate in a multistep editing loop that ensures each piece of the story fits into the overall Fallen London universe (and that it’s as eerie, romantic or disturbing as possible).

This week, Failbetter announced its renewed focus on Fallen London. The game has been on the back burner for a while as developers worked on Sunless Sea and its sequel, Sunless Skies. Some of the mechanics and stories have languished in the meantime, and Gardiner says it’s simply time to dust off the cobwebs and dive back into the Echo Bazaar.

Throughout 2017, the Fallen London team promises to continue a few storylines, such as “The Cheery Man” and “Last Constable,” “The Dilmun Club, A Return to the Empress’ Court and the Light Fingers ambition. This is on top of the game’s expected stories and events, including the next mayoral election, a large-scale affair where players chose the leader of Fallen London. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Failbetter is improving its own writing tools.

“Everyone’s been in the role at least a year, and our process is well-established and polished,” Gardiner says, noting that the team has expanded to include freelancers like Emily Short. “Failbetter has grown in all other areas, too — tech, analytics, art, production. We’re now in a place where we’re able to commit dedicated resource to some things that otherwise would have missed out to higher-priority tasks.”

Besides, Failbetter wants to reward veteran players who have been clamoring for these updates for a long while. “We’ve always seen this content as an unpaid debt, and it’s time to pay it off,” he says.

Fallen London never sleeps. Since its inception in 2009, it’s continued to evolve, gathering new stories, items, characters and creeps under the city’s yellowed gas lamps. Kennedy, Gardiner and Failbetter have written more than 1.5 million words for Fallen London so far, and they’re nowhere near done.

Fallen London is the story of a city, and a city doesn’t stop,” Gardiner says. “There are definitely stories that will conclude, but London won’t. Some players will feel a natural stopping point when some stories — like the ambitions that drove them to London — are at an end, but the game won’t force them to leave. We want players to spend as much time in Fallen London as they choose. And if they want to leave and come back, that’s fine too. We’ll always make you welcome, Delicious Friend.”
