The Tragically Hip’s frontman, whose death from brain cancer was announced Wednesday by the band, was a passionate hockey fan and player. 

References to Canada’s national pastime were woven into many of his lyrics. 

Leafs coach, players remember Downie

“Gord Downie personified what it means to be Canadian, composing the soundtrack for our country,” said Air Canada Centre announcer Mike Ross during the pregame ceremony as the crowd cheered. 

“You will live forever in the hearts of all Canadians and tonight we pay tribute and celebrate all you have done for our country.”

Some of the Hip’s most memorable songs were played in the Leafs and Red Wings’ locker rooms. 

Earlier, the Leafs acknowledged Downie’s death by tweeting, “To the man who told the stories of a game, a people and a country.” 

The tweet was accompanied by a photo of the Hip performing at one of their three sold-out shows at the Air Canada Centre last August during their nationwide farewell tour — Man Machine Poem. 

Leafs head coach Mike Babcock called the news “tragic” during a news conference. 

“You got to live each and everyday because you don’t know what’s going to happen in your life, to your family, to yourself and you want to enjoy the moments,” he said.  

Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly remembered Downie as “something special.”

“We have a lot of fans in this room, all over Toronto, all over Canada, all over the world and loosing him is tough,” Rielly said. 

Hockey fan, player

Downie spent his early years on the ice. 

His godfather was future Boston Bruins coach and general manager Harry Sinden, and Downie enjoyed the national pastime as both a die-hard Bruins fan and a goalie who took his B-level team to a provincial championship.

Fifty Mission Cap and Leafs

Downie’s handwritten lyrics from the Hip’s 1992 hit song Fifty Mission Cap are enshrined in the Leafs’ players lounge. 

“Bill Barilko disappeared that summer. He was on a fishing trip. The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Cup. They didn’t win another till 1962, the year he was discovered,” Downie sang.

The song tells the story of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1951 Stanley Cup victory, and an unlikely hero in defenceman Bill Barilko, who died in a plane crash just a few months after he scored the winning overtime goal against the Montreal Canadiens. He went missing while flying back from a fishing trip in Quebec. 

The song was released the year Barilko’s number was formally hoisted to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre by the hockey club.

Barilko’s banner was lowered in honour of Downie Wednesday night. 

Canadian hockey community reeling from loss

Downie touched Canada’s hockey community. 

Former Leaf Doug Gilmour, who like Downie is a native of Kingston, Ont.,  also tweeted his condolences to the Downie family.

“Heartbroken today,” Gilmour said. “Few Canadians touched this country like Gord Downie. Thank you for everything you gave us. My deepest condolences.”

Following a battle with brain cancer, the frontman for The Tragically Hip died Tuesday night at the age of 53.

“So many Canadians were just hoping he would get through it even though they said it was terminal,” van Koeverden says. “Nobody really wanted to believe that, so it’s still a shock.”

The four-time Olympic kayak medallist, whose first love was music, says there is no band he has listened to more consistently throughout his life, dating back to when he purchased the album Up To Here.

“I was 12. I loved music,” says van Koeverden. “I wasn’t a sports kid. I grew up trying to be in bands and playing music. My mom sent me down to the canoe club because I was getting in trouble after school, but music was a way bigger part of my life than sports.”

Having crossed paths with Downie several times in Toronto, van Koeverden also has high regard for him as a person, pointing out that his kindness was a good example for everyone.

“We watched him be so generous with his time and kind with other people and such an incredible artist,” says van Koeverden. “I think it reminded a lot of Canadians, specifically a lot of Canadian artists and Canadians in general, that you can also be that kind.

“It sets the bar pretty high, but the guy was just too kind. That’s the reminder, that’s what I’m taking away from him: That he was a reminder to be good. It’s within us. Everyone can just be good if they try.”

Must-see show

Canadian curler Rachel Homan remembers her determination to get tickets for the Hip’s final show in her hometown of Ottawa. It took place in the summer of 2016, when the band played one last tour after Downie’s terminal illness was revealed.

“Tickets were sold out for the Ottawa show,” says Homan. “My dad and I both tried to get them the second they were released months in advance. I set my alarm to make sure I didn’t miss the release.

“But they were scooped up by scalpers online and the tickets were very expensive so I got us last-minute tickets to the show. They seemed good, but when we walked up to our seats we realized just how good they were. Our seats were second row from the stage and Gord Downie’s wife was sitting right in front of me. All of the band members’ families were one row in front of us.”

A Tragically Hip song was also part of a special moment for Homan and husband, Shawn Germain.

“Long Time Running is one of my favourite songs. We picked it as the last song we played at our wedding,” she says.

“We both love The Tragically Hip. It’s Canadian and we wanted to have one of their songs be a part of our day. We both have so many memories listening to them growing up.”

‘The ultimate Canadian experience’

At the 2002 Winter Olympics, Downie pulled some members of the gold-medal winning Canadian women’s hockey team on stage during a concert at the University of Utah.

“Our whole team was on stage with Gord and the whole band,” Hayley Wickenheiser told The Canadian Press. “Nothing crazy [or] fancy ever. It was just those guys usually playing and all the athletes, the hockey team, sitting around and having a beer and chit-chatting.

“Just the ultimate Canadian experience when you think of how humble and understated they were and he was, but just so brilliant in terms of the lyrics and the stuff that he put together that really resonated with athletes and our team through the years.”

Wickenheiser considers Downie’s death is a “loss for Canada.”

“We all knew he didn’t have much time left,” she said. “It’s a big hole in the fabric of music and sport and who we are as Canadians.”

The sad news that Gord Downie has passed away after battling terminal brain cancer reverberated across Canada on Wednesday, and sports fans have their own reasons to cherish the man whose lyrics were frequently peppered with references to Canadian sports history.

The subject of the 1992 single Fifty-Mission Cap was Bill Barilko, the Maple Leafs player who scored a Stanley Cup-winning goal for the team in 1951 but disappeared in the months following the win.

Downie got right to the point in the first lines of Fireworks, from the Hip’s Phantom Power album, referencing the biggest victory in Canadian hockey history: “If there’s a goal that everyone remembers, it was back in ol’ ’72…”

The band teamed up with Sarah Harmer to record the song Silver Road, featured in the 2002 Canadian film Men With Brooms.

The curling comedy also featured the Tragically Hip as the rink representing Kingston, Ont., in a tournament.

You may recognize another Kingston, Ont., native in the video for The Darkest One.

In fact, Don Cherry’s former boss, (and former Boston Bruins GM) Harry Sinden, is Downie’s godfather.

For the 2006 album World Container, Downie penned the song Lonely End of the Rink, which may be one of the only love songs in the history of music to reference dekes.
