Big Tech companies shouldn’t have to pay for Internet service providers’ network-upgrade costs, a Google executive said today amid a push in Europe to have tech companies pay for broadband expansions and improvements.

“Introducing a sender-pays principle is not a new idea, and would upend many of the principles of the open Internet. These arguments are similar to those we heard 10 or more years ago and we have not seen new data that changes the situation,” said Matt Brittin, president of Google’s EMEA business and operations.

Brittin spoke today in a keynote panel at the Tech and Politics Forum presented by Financial Times and telecom lobby group ETNO. Google provided Ars with a copy of his prepared remarks.

Google will start assimilating Fitbit accounts next year https://briefnews.eu/google-will-start-assimilating-fitbit-accounts-next-year/ https://briefnews.eu/google-will-start-assimilating-fitbit-accounts-next-year/#respond Mon, 26 Sep 2022 09:34:01 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/google-will-start-assimilating-fitbit-accounts-next-year/
The word

Google’s acquisition of Fitbit closed in early 2021, but we haven’t seen much in the way of changes yet. 9to5Google spotted a big upcoming change posted on Fitbit’s help site: account migrations! A new Fitbit help page has outlined the plan for the coming Google account migration. If this goes anything like the Nest account migrations (done by the same Google Hardware division), Fitbit users are in for a wild ride.

Google’s support page says, “We plan to enable use of Fitbit with a Google account sometime in 2023” and that at that point “some uses of Fitbit will require a Google account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit devices and features.” That means optional account migrations for existing users in 2023. Google also says, “Support of Fitbit accounts will continue until at least early 2025. After support of Fitbit accounts ends, a Google account will be required to use Fitbit. We’ll be transparent with our customers about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles.”

The merging of accounts will, of course, mean that Google gets your health data. Google says that “you’ll need to consent to transfer your Fitbit user data from Fitbit to Google” and that “Google will then provide you with Fitbit under Google’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and binding commitments for Fitbit.” Part of those EU commitments, which Google chose to apply to the whole world, is that “Google will not use Fitbit health and wellness data for Google Ads.”

Google Home can now use Nest speakers to detect your presence https://briefnews.eu/google-home-can-now-use-nest-speakers-to-detect-your-presence/ https://briefnews.eu/google-home-can-now-use-nest-speakers-to-detect-your-presence/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 23:22:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/google-home-can-now-use-nest-speakers-to-detect-your-presence/ Google Home no longer needs to lean solely on smart home devices like thermostats to know whether or not you're around. Home's optional presence sensing feature can now use interactions with Nest speakers and smart displays to help detect activity in your abode, letting it perform automated actions. If you talk to your Nest Audio or tap your Nest Hub, for instance, Google may know to turn the lights on. Second-gen Nest Hubs can also use their Soli radar sensor to tell when you're close.

You can enable presence sensing in the Google Home app for Android and iOS by visiting the Features section in the settings. Detection is strictly opt-in, and Google stresses that ambient noise won't trigger presence cues. Cameras, doorbells and the Nest Hub Max won't switch devices between "home" and "away" modes.

The expansion makes presence detection considerably more useful. Until now, you needed a Nest Guard, Nest Protect, Nest Thermostat or Nest x Yale smart lock in tandem with your phone's location. While those are frequently good indicators, they don't always tell the full story — you might lock the door when someone is still at home. The use of speakers and displays could make Google's smart home automation more reliable, particularly in unusual scenarios.

The Morning After: Google’s cheaper $30 Chromecast with Google TV https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/ https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 12:21:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/ Google has unveiled another streaming dongle. The Chromecast with Google TV (HD) device manages to offer a lot of the features from the $ 50 4K model at a significantly cheaper $ 30 price. Unlike the older $ 35 Chromecast, it comes with a remote control that eliminates the need for a smartphone, though you can still control it with your phone. There is a drawback – that lower 1080p resolution – but there’s HDR support. It also comes with six months of Peacock Premium, free.

The lack of a remote controller was a frustration for many people looking for a plug-and-stream stick, and at this price, it’s a pretty tempting streaming solution if you haven’t already picked up a Chromecast, Roku or something else.

The FDA may have unintentionally made 'NyQuil Chicken' go viral on TikTok

TikTok says interest spiked only after the FDA's warning.

You’ve probably heard something about “NyQuil Chicken,” a supposedly viral TikTok “challenge” of cooking chicken in a marinade of cold medicine. Not only disgusting, as the FDA recently reminded the public, it’s just as toxic as it looks. The agency’s bizarrely timed warning may have backfired, making the meme more popular than ever. TikTokconfirmed that on September 14th, the day before the FDA notice, there were only five searches for “NyQuil chicken” in the app. But by September 21st, that number skyrocketed “by more than 1,400 times,” according to BuzzFeed News.

Instagram is working on 'nudity protection' technology

It’s focused on unwanted DMs.

An early screengrab tweeted by researcher Alessandro Paluzzi indicates that Instagram is working on "Nudity protection" technology that "covers photos that may contain nudity in chat," giving users the option to view them or not. Instagram parent Meta confirmed to The Verge that it's in development. Meta said the aim is to help shield people from nude images or other unsolicited messages. As further protection, the company said it can't view the images itself nor share them with third parties.

Facebook violated Palestinians' right to free expression, according to Meta

Many users' accounts were hit with "false strikes" last year due to Meta's policies.

Meta has released the findings of an outside report that examined how its content moderation policies affected Israelis and Palestinians amid an escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip last May. The report said that Facebook’s approach appears “to have had an adverse human rights impact on the rights of Palestinian users to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, political participation, and non-discrimination, and therefore on the ability of Palestinians to share information and insights about their experiences as they occurred.”

After pushing AV1 codec, Google goes after Dolby with HDR and audio standards https://briefnews.eu/after-pushing-av1-codec-google-goes-after-dolby-with-hdr-and-audio-standards/ https://briefnews.eu/after-pushing-av1-codec-google-goes-after-dolby-with-hdr-and-audio-standards/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 10:39:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/after-pushing-av1-codec-google-goes-after-dolby-with-hdr-and-audio-standards/

Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world’s most popular video site. Chrome is the world’s most popular browser. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it’s just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google’s next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.

Protocol’s Janko Roettgers has a report on “Project Caviar,” Google’s plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby’s old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company’s technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol’s report says $ 50 streaming sticks end up having around $ 2 of that price tag go to Dolby.

Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that’s three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Atmos is supported by Apple, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

Google now lets you request the removal of search results that contain personal data https://briefnews.eu/google-now-lets-you-request-the-removal-of-search-results-that-contain-personal-data/ https://briefnews.eu/google-now-lets-you-request-the-removal-of-search-results-that-contain-personal-data/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 10:15:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/google-now-lets-you-request-the-removal-of-search-results-that-contain-personal-data/ Google is releasing a tool that makes it easier to remove search results containing your address, phone number and other personally identifiable information, 9to5Google has reported. It first revealed the "results about you" feature at I/O 2022 in May, describing it as a way to "help you easily control whether your personally-identifiable information can be found in Search results."

If you see a result with your phone number, home address or email, you can click on the three-dot menu at the top right. That opens the usual "About this result" panel, but it now contains a new "Remove result" option at the bottom of the screen. A dialog states that if the result contains one of those three things, "we can review your request more quickly."

Google results about you privacy tool
Google

You can then monitor the request in a new menu item in the Google app called "Results about you," available by tapping your user profile at the top right. You can then monitor the progress of requests via filters "All requests," "In progress" and "Approved."

The same page also lets you make a new request with a "Why would you like to remove this result" step. Options there include "It shows my personal contact info," "It shows my contact into with an intent to harm me," "It shows other personal info," "It contains illegal info" and "It’s outdated." Previously, though, Google has said that not all requests may be granted:

It’s important to note that when we receive removal requests, we will evaluate all content on the web page to ensure that we’re not limiting the availability of other information that is broadly useful, for instance in news articles. And of course, removing contact information from Google Search doesn’t remove it from the web, which is why you may wish to contact the hosting site directly, if you’re comfortable doing so.

The new feature has only rolled out to a limited number of users in the US and Europe, 9to5Google notes (I've yet to see it in France and I'm in the Google app beta). In the meantime, you can remove other personally identifiable information or doxxing content from Google Search via a removal request — there's more information about that available here.

Gen Z is increasingly using TikTok videos instead of Google search, but 1 in 5 of them contain misinformation, a new study says https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/ https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/#respond Mon, 19 Sep 2022 17:07:15 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/ tiktok
A person walks past a sign for TikTok.

  • A new study by a site that tracks online misinformation found that 1 in 5 videos on TikTok contain misinformation.
  • The study found that TikTok often yields more partisan search results than Google.
  • Gen Z users are increasingly turning to TikTok instead of Google as their primary search engine.

TikTok is no longer just a place for viral dances and food hacks. Gen Z users have begun replacing Google with TikTok as their primary search engine, The New York Times recently reported.

That might be a serious predicament.

A new study by NewsGuard, a site that monitors misinformation across the internet, found that one in five search results on TikTok contains misinformation. The study analyzed the top 20 search results across 27 different news topics ranging from "2022 election" to "mRNA vaccine."

NewsGuard's study found that TikTok also prompted users with biased search terms. For example, if a user searched for "covid vaccine." TikTok would offer suggestions for more biased search terms such as "covid vaccine truths" or "covid vaccine hiv." More than half of the search results that popped up about the 2022 midterm elections contained "hyper-partisan left-leaning rhetoric," the study noted.

The rampant misinformation on TikTok is particularly significant given the number of home remedy videos circulating on the platform. The ongoing baby formula shortage has led to a nebula of videos promoting DIY baby formula that pediatricians have labeled as "dangerous."

After the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, herbal remedies for abortion began trending on TikTok. Videos that suggested everything from bitter garnish parsley to mugwort, a flowering plant, were toted as remedies for abortion. Insider reported that a TikTok video that suggests that mugwort can induce a miscarriage had over 1 million views on TikTok. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health noted that "very little research has been done on Mugwort in people."

Meghna T., a senior from suburban Michigan, said that if she's searching for anything health or education related she still uses Google. For "everything else" though she turns to TikTok.

Sorry, Google — Apple is right to keep ignoring RCS for the iPhone https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/ https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 11:45:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/ With the release of iOS 16, Apple sees its Messages app pick up a slew of notable updates with one notable exception: RCS (Rich Chat Services).

Despite Google’s continued attempts at public shaming, the iPhone maker has covered its ears and steadily plowed around in building out its own fairly successful messaging service. After a look at the state of RCS in 2022, this may just have been the right choice.

RCS is still a mess

rcs google

Let’s do a quick recap of what RCS is. It’s an update to the SMS standard that’s powered by a mixture of Google and a handful of global carriers. It brings modern features like typing indicators, read receipts, and high res image support to regular texting. It has been pointedly ignored by Apple, killing its utility as an SMS replacement between iPhones and Android phones.

Although Google has pushed for RCS to come to the iPhone and replace SMS time after time, Apple’s response has simply been a flat-out “seen.” The benefits are clear for Google. Being a “green bubble” wouldn’t necessarily be a source of shame if RCS were to land. Apple’s refusal here seems remarkably reticent until you read the fine print.

Google

Only 20% of Android users have been estimated to have access to RCS. This means that, despite the high installed base of Android, only a few users scattered worldwide will be able to take advantage of it — few being relative, of course.

Secondly, RCS is not necessarily a less confusing experience. Although it is nominally a carrier initiative, it is almost wholly run through Google’s servers. Some carriers like AT&T do have their own implementations. It’s an unstable mess resulting in a broken experience where two users on the same phone but with different carriers could end up with different versions of RCS. Even Google’s touted end-to-end encryption is only a feature of Google’s Messages app, not RCS itself.

Let them eat iPhones

Tim Cook unveiling the iPhone 13 at Apple's California Streaming event in September 2021.

“I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point,” Tim Cook was quoted as saying. “I would love to convert you to an iPhone.”

Cook’s response may seem unnecessary, but it does demonstrate one truth: there is choice. If you want interoperable messaging between Google and Apple devices, you can download Signal or WhatsApp. If you want an iMessage-replacement, well, you’re going to have to use iMessage on an iPhone. That Google’s own Chat service has yet to catch on and create an organic demand groundswell of its own is an indictment. It’s one thing to bank on potential. It’s another to try and fail.

“Apple is completely uninterested in RCS and doesn’t see any advantage in implementing it. I’d be surprised if they implemented it unless there was some sort of legal or standards-based mandate. Apple’s general stance on cross-platform messaging is that there are a ton of OTT choices which work great — WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Facebook — and so there’s no problem that needs to be solved here,” Sascha Segan, PCMag mobile analyst, told Digital Trends months ago. This analysis proved correct.

RCS doesn’t solve any problems for you or me

A hand holding a phone that shows app store listing for Snapchat app on its screen.

Although Google may paint its RCS goals as one of equity, the company is simply making a transparent ‘hail Mary’ play. RCS has been available for so long that my defunct Windows Phone can support it, provided it’s equipped with an RCS-compatible SIM. Notably, Google didn’t implement RCS then. Rather, only after the company failed in pushing proprietary messaging app after proprietary messaging app did it finally switch to RCS as the new best thing.

However, proprietary messaging apps are how people choose to communicate. They are often robust, agile in development, and already meet messaging needs worldwide with a secondary business infrastructure even blooming around apps like WhatsApp and Line. iMessage, despite being accessed in the Messages app, is more akin to Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp in implementation.

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

New features like Edit Message or Undo Send are possible because iMessage is proprietary. Certainly, RCS could be built out so that it can support such modern asks, but the very framework of the protocol means that it’ll take years to roll out. By then, the next big thing would already be here. Remember, RCS isn’t catching up to WhatsApp of today, it’s catching up to WhatsApp’s original release. Flashy features like end-to-end encryption and Google integration remain exclusive to Google’s Messages app. RCS is starting on a back foot, and it will always be on the back foot, and nothing about its chaotic implementation dispels that notion.

As iOS 16 drops, the conversation around iMessage and RCS reminds us that Apple’s biggest feature isn’t any singular feature — but ubiquity. The iPhone and iOS are everywhere, and users can be counted on to engage with them. Android, for all its very many advantages, doesn’t have that. If it did, then the conversation around RCS wouldn’t be happening. We would all be on Allo.

Google reportedly won’t make another Pixelbook laptop https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/ https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 21:06:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/ Google is killing its Pixelbook laptop, according to an internal memo reported byThe Verge. The company has also “shut down” the team that was working on the next generation of the device, which was reportedly “far along in development.”

The company apparently opted to shift resources away from the premium Chromebook in an effort to cut costs. Members of the Pixelbook team were reportedly moved to other roles at Google.

The move means Google is officially done making laptops after nearly a decade of experimenting with notebooks. In 2013, the company introduced the Chromebook Pixel — the first Google-made hardware to get Pixel branding — and refreshed it with a pricier model two years later. Google shifted strategies again in 2017, when the first Pixelbook debuted as a high-end alternative to the typically low-cost Chromebooks. The 2-in-1 started at $ 999, and came with an optional Pixelbook Pen accessory.

In 2019, Google introduced the $ 649 Pixelbook Go as a more affordable, but still higher-end, Chromebook with Pixel branding. Though the Pixel-branded Chromebooks were meant to show off just how much was possible when Chrome OS was combined with more premium hardware, the devices never seemed to be as popular as the cheaper alternatives that have long dominated classrooms, particularly during the pandemic.

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hundreds of Google workers and their supporters gathered near the company’s downtown San Francisco offices Thursday, raising signs that read “No Tech for Apartheid” and filling the air with chants of “Tech from Amazon and Google! You can’t claim that you are neutral!”

Similar scenes unfolded outside Google and Amazon offices in New York and Seattle, and a Google office in Durham, North Carolina. Google and Amazon employees were joined at the rallies by tech workers from other companies and Palestinian rights organizations. They all convened to protest Project Nimbus, Google and Amazon’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government.
