  • Singles’ Day, China’s once-timid Valentine’s Day repackaged as a 24-hour online retail blitz, is about get bigger for Alibaba.
  • In just a few days’ time, the world will meet the 10th edition of Alibaba’s “Singles’ Day” shopping extravaganza and the company says it expects to receive more than one billion orders.

It’s capitalism’s shiny new slim-lined version of Christmas, but with none of the gods and more of the goods. The event turns 10 years old in a matter of days.

Next Monday, as one generation meditates on the final shots of a distant war, another generation in another part of the world will be embracing the 10th edition of Alibaba’s “Singles’ Day.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods plunged as much as 14% in pre-market trading on Wednesday as a slowdown in Under Armour sales weighed on top-line results.

The sporting-goods retailer earned $ 1.20 a share during the second quarter, easily beating the the $ 1.06 that Wall Street analysts surveyed by Bloomberg were expecting. Dick’s recorded second-quarter sales of $ 2.18 billion, missing the $ 2.23 billion that was anticipated. Comparable sales fell 1.9%, worse than the 0.8% drop that was expected.

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • Watch the ride record for Universal’s Jurassic Park – The Ride get broken with a marriage proposal.
  • Find out which opening-day attraction at Islands of Adventure is soon due to close forever.
  • Drink spills are up at Walt Disney World as restaurants stop circulating plastic lids and straws.
  • Learn how you can celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hocus Pocus in style at Disney this Halloween.
  • See the list of names that is officially being brainstormed for Epcot’s upcoming Ratatouille ride.
  • All that and more!

Is it obsessive-compulsive to ride the same theme park attraction 62 times in a single day? Playing a kazoo rendition of the Jurassic Park music theme, one couple did it to break the ride record for Jurassic Park – The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The twist here is that their last ride ended with a marriage proposal. The method of popping the question and presenting the ring during the proposal earns some serious nerd points for creativity. Check it out in the video above. I proposed to my wife in a Brazilian restaurant back in May but now I’m left wondering if I shouldn’t have incorporated a movie prop.

Break out the nostalgia kleenex: the “Eighth Voyage of Sinbad” stunt show — an attraction that dates back to the opening day of Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 1999 — will be closing permanently on September 15. The death of one attraction marks the birth of another, however, as that is the same day that Cinemark will be bringing its patented Luxury Loungers and XD auditoriums to Universal CityWalk.

If you’re still upset about the closure of Sinbad’s show, just remember: at least Disney still has Sindbad’s Storybook Voyage. Let’s not forget that September is Back to Hogwart’s time at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, either. And hey: Halloween Horror Nights has a classic monsters maze coming to it.

Summer is winding down now and Halloween season is gearing up at Walt Disney World. This is the last Theme Park Bits of August, so if you missed it this week, be sure to check out /Film’s end-of-summer, Easter-egg-filled tour of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The photos for this came courtesy of my own parents and sister, who live in Central Florida and are Annual Passholders at Disney World.

Sealing over attractions like the helmet of Buzz Lightyear, a more airtight cone of silence may one day descend on Disney if this patent for a new soundproofing technology is any indication.

“Drinking straws! Get your drinking straws right here!” That’s what you won’t be hearing Cast Members say at Disney World’s table-service restaurants, where straws are now available by request only. Counter-service restaurants are also now eliminating lids from the drinks they’re serving, which has reportedly led to an exponential number of drink spills. It’s all part of the eco-friendly initiative to phase out disposable straws and other unnecessary plastic utensils at Disney resorts worldwide by mid-2019.

Disney is also throwing financial support behind an initiative to prevent casinos from muscling in on its territory in Florida unless 60% or more of the state votes otherwise during November elections.

At the Magic Kingdom, from now until October 31, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride has live actors joining its animatronic population, only during event hours at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

The same event is hosting the Hocus Pocus Villains Spelltacular stage show, and this year, there’s also a wealth of Hocus Pocus merchandise on offer. The movie is celebrating its 25th anniversary (Vanessa Bogart revisited it for /Film just last October), so Disney has gone all out with T-shirts, a tote bag, a light-up ornament, and a cauldron-shaped mug, all themed to Hocus Pocus. Among the other Halloween Party goods available this year are a box set of villain-themed pins and a Passholder-exclusive Orange Bird pin.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the “UP! A Great Bird Adventure” show that premiered back in April has not been well-received and now Disney is reportedly outsourcing a rewrite of the show.

It’s always interesting when a new attraction or even a new theme park is being bandied about to hear the list of potential names they’re floating. Epcot’s Ratatouille ride is currently under construction and now Disney is testing names for it with a new survey. Check out all the possible variants in the tweet below.

Not listed, but worth considering? “Ratatouille: Anton Ego’s Revenge,” or, “Ratatouille: Anton Ego Reviews the Modern Epcot,” or “Ratatouille: Anton Ego’s Devastating Takedown of Tomorrowland.”

Actually, I enjoyed the movie Tomorrowland more than most. However, *pushes up Anton Ego glasses* it flopped at the box office and remains director Brad Bird’s least lauded film. Like Andrew Stanton retreating to the safe waters of Finding Dory after the failure of John Carter of Mars, the tepid response from moviegoers seemed to send Bird scrambling back to animation sequels after a brief, not wholly successful stint in live-action (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was a success, Tomorrowland less so).

That’s okay: Finding Dory topped the Summer Movie Wager in 2016 and Incredibles 2 is currently sitting pretty at #2 on this summer’s scorecard (second only to Avengers: Infinity War). Besides raking in over a billion dollars and becoming the highest grossing animated film of all time, Bird’s sequel was a wonderful artistic achievement that is sure to keep inspiring a new generation of riders on the Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure.

Even Matt Damon turned up in Pixar Pier this week with an arm around Edna Mode, the Incredibles’ costume designer—who Bird himself voiced in the movies. While you’re waiting in line at Pixar Pier to ride the Incredicoaster or meet Edna Mode (brace yourself for the effortless outro of park news), you can now mobile order beer or Dole whip from Bayside Brews at California Adventure and from the Tiki Juice Bar at Disneyland.

Trump celebrated ‘American pride’ by showcasing US-made goods at the White House — here’s what it looked like https://briefnews.eu/trump-celebrated-american-pride-by-showcasing-us-made-goods-at-the-white-house-heres-what-it-looked-like/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-celebrated-american-pride-by-showcasing-us-made-goods-at-the-white-house-heres-what-it-looked-like/#respond Tue, 24 Jul 2018 03:20:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-celebrated-american-pride-by-showcasing-us-made-goods-at-the-white-house-heres-what-it-looked-like/ Donald Trump thumbs upREUTERS

The White House showcased a number of products made in each of the 50 states during its second annual “Made in America” event on Monday.

“We’re here today to celebrate the greatest products in the world — products made with American heart, American sweat, and American pride,” President Donald Trump said.

The Trump administration touted the importance of American-made and American-operated products, which was defined as having contained no, or a negligible amount of, “foreign content,” according to a White House pool report. Additionally, the product’s final assembly or processing must have taken place in the US.

“The single best tribute to our workers can be found in the unmatched quality and craftsmanship of the amazing products they bring from the blueprint to the storefront,” Trump added in a statement. “‘Made in the USA’ is a global symbol of unrivaled excellence.”

The products on display at the White House ranged from knives to cotton linens, while the bulkier goods, such as Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet and Ford’s F-150 truck, were on full display outside.

This year’s showcase comes during a contentious period in US trade relations, after the Trump administration targeted China and some US allies with steep tariffs on a variety of goods. China has fought back with tariffs of its own, sparking a global trade war that some fear would plunge financial markets into chaos.

Here’s what Monday’s “Made in America” product showcase looked like:

The F-35’s advanced features have been praised by many pilots, but its steep price tag and numerous setbacks have taken away some of the fighter jet’s luster. At around $ 400 billion, the F-35 program is the US Defense Department’s costliest endeavor.

More than 1,000 companies across the US contributed components and helped build the Orion crew module. In 2014, the unmanned Orion flew 3,600 miles into space and safely returned to Earth.

‘Take it or leave it:’ Israel proposes building goods port for Gaza in Cyprus – report https://briefnews.eu/take-it-or-leave-it-israel-proposes-building-goods-port-for-gaza-in-cyprus-report/ https://briefnews.eu/take-it-or-leave-it-israel-proposes-building-goods-port-for-gaza-in-cyprus-report/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 23:34:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/take-it-or-leave-it-israel-proposes-building-goods-port-for-gaza-in-cyprus-report/ Tel Aviv has discussed the establishment of a seaport for the Gaza Strip in Cyprus, Israeli media reports. Israel’s proposal, now being considered by Nicosia, comes after it has actually maintained a blockade of Gaza for years.

The alleged ‘good will’ initiative is, however, far from being without conditions. The establishment of a port would take place only if the Hamas militant group, which controls Gaza, releases Israeli civilians and returns the remains of IDF soldiers.

According to Israeli media, the proposal is indeed conditional on the release of the Israeli civilian captives held by Hamas since 2014 and 2015 as well as on the return of the bodies of two Israeli soldiers, killed in 2014 during Operation Protective Edge. “We will clearly and openly put the benefits package on the table [and say], ‘This is possible, this is the price. Take it or leave it’,” a senior Israeli defense source told the local Hadashot TV.

The proposal itself reportedly involves setting up a floating dock or even building a separate pier in Cyprus, designed to receive cargo from vessels carrying goods destined for Gaza and then shipping them to the blockaded Palestinian enclave. The goods are expected to be delivered from Cyprus to Gaza by ferry, as it lacks facilities to receive cargo ships.

All goods delivered to Cyprus would still be checked by the Israelis as part of a special monitoring mechanism, designed to prevent weapons-smuggling into the territory controlled by the Hamas militant group.

It is Israel that is actually behind the Gaza blockade. Citing the need to prevent arms-smuggling by Hamas, Tel Aviv has severely limited the inflow of necessary goods to the Palestinian enclave. In the meantime, numerous media reports, including ones published by Israeli media, warned that the situation in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating, with nearly all the drinking water sources in the area contaminated and the water crisis worsening.

The Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman advanced the ‘port for Gaza’ proposal to the Cypriot authorities on his trip to the island last weekend, Israeli media reported on Monday. The plan was agreed between Liberman and his Cypriot counterpart, Savvas Angelides, on Friday, the Israeli Channel 2 reported.

The plan was also then presented to the Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, according to the Hadashot TV report. The Cypriot authorities have confirmed that Israel has addressed them with this proposal, adding that no decision has yet been taken on the matter.

“It is an old issue which is now being re-discussed,” the Cypriot government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told Reuters, referring to the fact that the idea of establishing a port for Gaza in Cyprus has actually been floated for years.

“There will be contacts between the government and all interested parties in the region and, possibly, a decision will be taken. At the moment no decision has been taken. The request is being examined, it hasn’t been rejected,” he added.

The Israeli authorities have not yet confirmed any concrete details relating to the proposal. “The Minister of Defense and defense establishment, along with members of the international community, are pursuing many efforts to change the reality in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement. “Any idea relating to improving the humanitarian situation that is put on the table is conditioned on a solution to the issue of the hostages and missing persons,” it added.

Israeli media reported that a detailed working plan of the port establishment would be put together over the next three months and would be then presented “directly” to the Gaza people. “As soon as all the details are closed and ‘locked and loaded,’ we will appeal directly to the public in Gaza, going over the heads of Hamas,” a senior defense source told Hadashot TV.

Nowadays, Israel controls two land crossings into Gaza, with Egypt controlling the third one. Most commercial and humanitarian goods destined for Gaza are now transferred through one of the Israeli crossings. Goods that arrive by sea are unloaded at an Israeli port and are then transported to Gaza by trucks after being monitored by Israel.

The supposed ‘good will’ initiative comes after the Israeli authorities unleashed a violent crackdown on Palestinians taking part in the protests at the Gaza Strip dubbed the Great Return March. More than 120 Palestinian protesters have been killed by the Israeli military and 3,800 have been injured over more than two months since the start of the protests.

Meanwhile, Israel has also actually limited the entry of some goods to Gaza, which are considered to be vital to local hospitals. On June 15, Tel Aviv particularly limited the entry of helium gas to the Palestinian enclave, arguing that it had been used in attacks against Israel. It also threatened to completely halt the deliveries of the gas, which is vital for medical purposes, to Gaza if the attacks do not stop.

  • President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with China and is planning for $ 200 billion worth of Chinese goods to be subjected to an additional 10% tariff.
  • In turn, China said it would slap the US with tariffs on $ 50 billion worth of US imports starting in July.
  • China’s tariffs would target energy and agricultural products, such as ornamental fish, whiskey, and coal — which would affect some states more than others.
  • There are eight US states that exported more than $ 1 billion worth of tariff-eligible goods to China in 2017.

President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with China earlier this week, ordering the US Trade Representative to compile a list of $ 200 billion worth of Chinese goods to be subjected to an additional 10% tariff.

Trump’s decision came three days after he announced tariffs on $ 50 billion worth of Chinese goods that would be subject to a 25% tariff.

In turn, China said it would slap the US with tariffs on $ 50 billion worth of US imports starting in July. China’s tariffs would target energy and agricultural products, such as ornamental fish, whiskey, and coal — which would affect some states more than others.

Business Insider used US Commerce Department data to determine the number of tariff-eligible goods from each state shipped to China in 2017.

Because of the US database’s limitations, the totals include some foreign-sourced goods that may not be subject to China’s tariffs. Those goods represent a small portion of the overall values.

Additionally, the database measures exports using a system called Origin of Movement. This measures where exports are sent from rather than where they are produced. While research shows that Origin of Movement can be a solid proxy for production, the Census Bureau data may provide an undercount for some upstream producers.

For instance, some farmers in the Midwest ship their soybeans to Louisiana for transport, which increases the count for Louisiana. Given the fact that Louisiana still relies on the shipping and sales for its economy, the data is still helpful to evaluate the pain from the tariffs — but it may undercount the lost value to some upstream producers.

There are eight US states that exported more than $ 1 billion worth of tariff-eligible goods to China in 2017:

1. Texas: Tariff-eligible export amount: $ 8,022,380,040

AP Photo/Matthew Brown

In Texas, the biggest hit will come from crude oil and propane. The state sent $ 3.7 billion worth of crude oil to China last year, and $ 1.7 billion worth of propane.

2. Louisiana: Tariff-eligible export amount: $ 6,627,390,388

China hits back at Trump, announces retaliatory tariffs on $3bn of US goods https://briefnews.eu/china-hits-back-at-trump-announces-retaliatory-tariffs-on-3bn-of-us-goods/ https://briefnews.eu/china-hits-back-at-trump-announces-retaliatory-tariffs-on-3bn-of-us-goods/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 02:52:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-hits-back-at-trump-announces-retaliatory-tariffs-on-3bn-of-us-goods/ Beijing has announced a series of measures that it plans to implement as a response to President Trump’s new import tariffs, in an escalating trade war between the US and China.

Despite repeated warnings from Beijing, on Thursday Donald Trump instructed US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer to levy tariffs on at least $ 50 billion of Chinese imports, accusing it of stealing American technology. The USTR was given 15 days to propose a list of products that will be targeted.

China immediately hit back, announcing that it plans to impose tariffs on US goods, which, last year, had an import value of $ 3 billion. China’s commerce ministry also threatened to take legal action against the US through the World Trade Organization “to maintain the stability of global trading rules,” hoping that a full-blown trade war can be avoided through dialogue.

“We intend to impose tariffs on certain US imports to balance out the losses caused to Chinese interests by the US tariffs on imported steel and aluminum,” the ministry said, according to Reuters.

“China hopes the United States will pull back from the brink, make prudent decisions, and avoid dragging bilateral trade relations to a dangerous place,” the ministry added.

“If a trade war were initiated by the US, China would fight to the end to defend its own legitimate interests with all necessary measures,” China’s US Embassy said, in a separate statement.

Overall, China’s commerce ministry is contemplating targeting 128 American products. Beijing first wants to impose a 15 percent tariff on American steel pipes, fruit and on wine imports, to a total value of $ 977 million, before introducing a 25 percent tariff on pork and recycled aluminum imports, worth $ 1.99 billion.

In the meantime, stock markets plunged on Thursday in a broad sell-off among investors who are fearing an escalation of a trade war between China and the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sunk 2.93 percent (723.43 points), the its lowest closing value since February 8. The S&P 500 Index plunged 2.52 percent (68.24 points) at the close of trading on Thursday, marking its lowest level since February 9. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei tumbled more than 3 percent on Friday, to its lowest level since October 12.

  • Fishs Eddy in New York has already sold out of Oprah 2020 mugs, less than a day after talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s rousing speech at the Golden Globe awards on Sunday.
  • The mugs were sold as part of a women’s empowerment section at the store.
  • Winfrey is reportedly actively thinking about running for president in 2020.

After the popular New York City home goods store Fishs Eddy began selling mugs featuring talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s face and the phrase “Oprah 2020” on them this past summer, they sold well, but didn’t make a splash.

But after last night’s speech at the Golden Globe awards that led the famous host to begin “actively” considering a 2020 presidential run, the Oprah mugs at Fishs Eddy flew off the shelves, and the store sold out of them by Monday morning, less than a day after the Hollywood awards ceremony.

“People were buying it because they had the option of it, but after last night, people came and were like ‘Oh there’s the Oprah mug, I’m going to get it,'” the store manager of Fishs Eddy told Business Insider. “So last night’s speech definitely helped sell it.”

The mug is part of the store’s women’s empowerment collection, and was featured alongside similar mugs honoring Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other powerful women.

Winfrey’s speech at the Golden Globes championed the cause of women who had spoken out through the “Me Too” campaign that highlighted sexual assault and harassment.

“I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon, and when that new day finally dawns it will be because of a lot of magnificent women — many of whom are right here in this room tonight — and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time where nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again,” Winfrey said on Sunday.

Fishs Eddy is expected to get a new shipment of the Oprah 2020 mugs sometime next week.
