As Dustin Johnson was leaving the clubhouse at the Glen Abbey Golf Club, he paused, looked around at the assembled media, and smiled.

"I hope to see y'all tomorrow," said Johnson, laughing.

The world No. 1 was in a four-way tie with fellow American Kevin Tway and South Koreans Byeong Hun An and Whee Kim atop the leaderboard after three rounds at the RBC Canadian Open. Johnson surged up the standings on Saturday behind a 7-under 65 performance to reach 17 under overall.

Followed by massive crowds wherever he went, Johnson set the pace for the rest of the field, firing seven birdies and an eagle. Five of those birdies came in the opening six holes. Despite playing so well, Johnson thinks he'll need to be even more aggressive to win the tournament.

"I like the golf course, I feel like my game's in really good form, I've got a lot of confidence in it," said Johnson, who tied for second in the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey in 2013 and 2016 but has yet to win the event. "I'm going to have to go out and play really well tomorrow. There's definitely low numbers out here.

"There's a lot of guys right around the lead and somebody's going to go shoot low. Hopefully it's me."

An (66) climbed three spots up the leaderboard, while Kim shot a 67 at the $ 6.2-million US PGA Tour event. Second-round leader Tway, who was paired with Kim, birdied on the par-5 18th hole to shoot a 68 and split the tie a fourth way.

Tway's father Bob won the Canadian Open in 2003 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. The younger Tway said on Saturday that he was aware he had to play catch-up with Johnson.

"Yeah, I looked [at the leaderboard] a little bit. He started off really hot," said Tway, noting that the key to Glen Abbey is to attack the front nine and final three holes, but play more conservatively on Nos. 11-15 because they sit in a deep valley with a ravine and plenty of rough.

For his part, Kim isn't intimidated by Johnson's popularity and isn't concerned with whether he's chasing or holding a lead.

"Chasing the lead or holding the lead, it doesn't matter. Just play your game," said Kim. "Everybody's going to say the same thing. It doesn't matter."

Hard Sunday for rest of the field

It will be difficult for the rest of the field to catch the top two pairs on Sunday.

Known for its small greens and narrow fairways, pinpoint accuracy is necessary to stay out of the rough at Glen Abbey. Players have benefited from daily rain showers or storms this week that have kept things soft. No rain is predicted on Sunday, however, firming up the greens and making it more likely balls will find their way into the rough.

Hudson Swafford and Rory Sabbatini are tied for fifth, four shots back of the leaders.

Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., was the low Canadian after a 5-under 67 put him into a tie for 13th at 11 under overall. Calgary's Ryan Yip (66) moved 40 spots up into a tie for 21st, seven shots back of Johnson and Co.

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., eagled on 18 to save par to tie for 29th at 9 under. He was paired with Johnson for the round.

"There's a lot of camera clicks," said Taylor. "I think I only had one putt where it somewhat bothered me. I should have backed off. But no, it was fun to have that many people. It's definitely electric, and when I can chip in like that and make a putt on 18, it's fun."

Even though he's the top player on the PGA Tour, Johnson insists he's only popular in Canada by proxy — his fiancee Paulina Gretzky is the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.

"Well, I can thank Wayne for that," said Johnson. "There's a lot of Gretzky fans out there, and so they tend to pull for me, which thanks, Wayne, I appreciate that. I do get a lot of love up here, and the fans have been great this week."

David Hearn (69) of Brantford, Ont., and Ben Silverman (73) of Thornhill, Ont., are tied for 43rd at 7 under. Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C., and Chris Crisologo of Richmond, B.C., Canada's only amateur to make the cut, are tied for 53rd, at 6 under.

Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano has experts paying attention and asking those in proximity to the eruption to be prepared. On Tuesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) raised its alert level to “red,” indicating that “Major volcanic eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected with hazardous activity both on the ground and in the air.”

Still, at Volcano Golf and Country Club, some ambitious golfers found the time to sneak in a few holes as ash flung into the air behind them, leading to some stunningly asynchronous images captured by Mario Tama for Getty Images. You can take a look at the wild scene below.

Despite the red alert now in effect, a few focused golfers were able to find the time to get a few holes.

Volcano Golf and Country Club is aptly named, but is reportedly safe from the path of the volcano for now. Sanae Gathwright, vice president of golf course operations, said that they’re ready to move if that changes. “If something happens, we’ll be out of here in minutes,” Gathwright said.

Tiger Woods inspired a generation of minority golfers when he burst on to the scene as a charismatic young star who won tournaments with laser-like focus and power. Suddenly, golf was cool.

Today, some of those same people who were among Woods’ most loyal fans are watching his downfall with sadness after his recent DUI arrest. They’re still playing and watching his sport, but they see a man who appears broken and never really embraced the part of an ethnic and racial role model.

Debert Cook, publisher of the African American Golfer’s Digest, said the clubhouse talk among her and other black golfers sometimes turns to Woods and his convoluted legacy.

“People really have said they are disappointed in his performance, and there’s even a lot of push back upon why should we even consider this brother part of our community when he has not really been involved,” she said.

“He’s one of us but he’s not one of us.”

Woods’ late father Earl was African-American, American Indian and Chinese; his mother Kultida is a native of Thailand who has Chinese and Dutch ancestry.

Many American blacks embraced Woods as one of their own, but he described his ethnicity as “Cablinasian.” Black people didn’t know what to make of that, Cook said.

The police who arrested Woods in Florida listed his race as black, something people were quick to point out on social media. “Only the Black part of Tiger Woods got arrested. The Asian part still has a clean record,” said one Twitter post.

Golf hurt by Woods

Woods, who has described himself as a “brown dude,” already had won more than two dozen tournaments when Vernel Bennett first picked up a club. Bennett, 66, president of the United Black Golfers Association, said golf overall has been hurt by Woods’ troubles — first the sex scandal at the end of 2009 that shattered his image and led to divorce from Swedish model Elin Nordegren, and more recently injuries and his DUI arrest.

“I think fewer people in general are watching the game since Tiger got out. It’s not just blacks,” he said.

Not that there were that many minorities playing golf even when Woods was in his heyday.

A study on minority participation in golf published by the National Golf Foundation seven years ago found that only a fraction of minorities play golf compared with whites, with blacks playing the most infrequently. Of 27.1 million total U.S. golfers in 2010, the study found, only 1.4 million were black.

The 2008 financial crash hurt many recreational activities, the study found a general decline in the sport. The largest percentage of black players in the study were men in their 30s — those who would have been in their formative years when Woods was so hot.

Woods left Stanford and turned pro in 1996. He has 79 career victories (No. 2 to Sam Snead), including 14 majors (No. 2 to Jack Nicklaus).

The magazine publisher said Woods “introduced golf to an entirely new community.”

“He was a god to people who never even paid attention to golf,” said Cook, whose magazine often publishes article about Woods.

Woods’ popularity did not lead to an increase of black players on the pro tour or in college golf.

Uncharted territory

In the 21 years since Woods started playing as a pro, no other African-American has won a PGA Tour event and only Harold Varner III plays on the major tour. The 26-year-old is ranked 138th. Joseph Bramlett, 29, played on the PGA Tour in 2011, but is now on the Web.com tour.

Only a few black golfers have made an impact in college, and even many historically black colleges have filled out rosters with white players and players from overseas.

Most Woods’ news lately has been about his personal problems, and that’s not bringing more young minorities to the golf course. Military retiree Doug Carey said Woods’ legal problems are “due to stupidity” and won’t dissuade minorities who began playing golf after catching the Tiger bug years ago.

“They got addicted to it when he was in his prime,” said Carey, who plays and works at the city-owned Roebuck Golf Course in Birmingham.

Now 41, Woods hasn’t won a PGA tournament since 2013, and his mugshot following his weekend arrest showed a sleepy-eyed man who appeared nowhere near the top of anyone’s game.

“For a lot of people he has fallen off their hero list,” said Cook.

A group of golfers were left stunned and scrambling for cover when a large alligator sauntered across their path carrying a massive fish in its mouth.

A Florida family was playing a round of golf on Thursday afternoon when the huge gator strolled through their game, interrupting play. One witness, overcome with shock, threw her club up in the air and ran away.

However, the woman’s sister-in-law, Norma Respress, had the wherewithal to capture footage of the amazing incident as the alligator went about its business oblivious to the players. The big beast, carrying its lunch in its mouth, seemed entirely unfazed by their presence and dramatic reaction.

“That’s amazing, I’ve never seen that before,” Respress can be heard saying in the video. “Wow. What a shot! He’s holding onto that fish! Amazing!”

The giant reptile paid no heed to the startled golfers and slunk into a nearby water feature to enjoy its lunch in peace.

“I’ve seen gators that big before, but never anything like that,” Respress told Florida news channel WFTS.

Close encounters between alligators and humans is a daily occurrence in Florida, which has an estimated population of 1.3 million of the scaly creatures. In January a group of startled tourists were left screaming in horror when a gator leaped on board their boat during a tour.
