The Philadelphia city councilman finally gives us a glimpse that he’s truly a shrewd politician at heart during this week’s This Is Us, which unfolds on three different golf greens in three different time periods. And yes, in one of those periods, Randall acts like he knows nothing in order to get something he really wants. It’s a sweet win for the usually-too-earnest public servant. Sadly, though, “It’s in the Way That You Use It” is cued up not once during the episode.
Way outside the City of Brotherly Love, Kevin buys a new bumper sticker for his mobile home: “If this RV’s a rockin,’ don’t come a’knockin… because two people with major issues are making a seriously bad choice inside.” OK, Kev doesn’t actually purchase that and affix it to his trailer. But he SHOULD. Because they ARE.
And in the past, Rebecca’s dad gets even realer with his future son-in-law. Read on for the highlights of “The Club.”
IN WHICH JACK MAKES THINGS WORSE | In the early days of their relationship, Jack drops Rebecca at her folks’ house and runs into her father, Dave, who’s about to head over to the country club for some golf. He invites Jack, who demurs, but Rebecca encourages her man to bond with her dad, so he goes.
The outing is awkward from start to finish, beginning when Mr. Malone has to buy Jack a course-appropriate outfit because his jeans and Henley just won’t do. Then they wind up joining some of Dave’s friends. One does something kind of related to house construction, so Dave keeps pressing the friend to have Jack in for an informational interview. Jack keeps saying no. Jack also keeps knocking back gin-and-tonics. So the end of the afternoon, he’s noticeably drunk.
That’s when Dave pulls him aside to tell him that he can envision Rebecca’s future wedding at the club so clearly. “Question:,” the older man asks Jack, “Do you see yourself here?” They get home before Jack has an answer. “I’m gonna marry your daughter,” Pearson says, going on to describe his hopes for their home and their life together. “So let me ask you: Do you see yourself there?” Not gonna lie, Jack: That speech would’ve been 90 percent more impressive if you weren’t slurring your words. “You’re never going to be good enough for her,” Dave says, and the two men are on the verge of coming to blows when Rebecca interrupts from the doorway. Jack has had so much to drink that he literally falls down after tripping over his own feet; Rebecca gently tells him she’s going to take him home, and Dave looks on in worry mixed with disgust.
PUTTING IN THE ROUGH | In the era when The Big Three were in middle school, Jack starts to grow a little… wary? jealous? of Randall’s growing closeness with his teacher Mr. Lawrence. So when Papa Pearson notes Randall’s growing interest in up-and-coming golf phenom Tiger Woods, Jack offers to take his son golfing the next day after school.
But Jack’s attempts to bond with his son, though well-meaning, are way off base. Jack recalls not feeling comfortable on the golf course with his future father-in-law, and tells his son never to let anyone make him feel that way. But Randall (rightly) points out that feeling out of place because of your socio-economic circumstances and not actually being permitted somewhere because of the color of your skin are two different things. He then asks why they quit the black dojo but haven’t let him quit baseball or soccer. Jack counters by saying, “I don’t see color” when he looks at Randall. “I see my son,” he says, trying to smooth it over. But that won’t fly, either. “Then you don’t see me, Dad,” the preteen says, asking to go home.
WHOOPIE WHOOPSIE | Kate and Toby haven’t had made love since she got pregnant, and it’s really starting to wear on their relationship. So they ask Rebecca and Miguel to babysit so the new parents can escape to a hotel room for some weekday sex. Problem is, though, that Toby’s little Damon doesn’t want to party… and Kate assumes it’s because her newly thinner husband is no longer attracted to her. And when she finally asks him if that’s the case, he says no — but then defeatedly admits that her hesitation to get on board with him getting rid of his bigger clothes earlier in the episode felt like she didn’t have confidence in him to keep the weight off.
They come home still mad, but then she takes a pair of scissors to some of his big pants to show how much she believes in him. They kiss and make up, then retire to the bedroom to have a quickie before Miguel and Rebecca return with the baby.
THE BIG FAKE-OUT | The councilman Randall bailed on twice is now freezing him out, refusing to meet to talk about Randall’s proposal to put a grocery store in one of the city’s food deserts. But our man is determined to be heard, so he edges his way into a conversation about golf and winds up inviting his adversary and two other politicians to a tee time at an exclusive club.
Randall spends most of the day apologizing for his rough golf skills, and eventually the older councilman takes pity on him and starts giving him tips. When Randall implements them, he gets better, and the councilman is pleased. By the end of the afternoon, they’re chummier, and the older man agrees to hear out Randall’s proposal in exchange for Randall’s possible help on his legislation. Yay, right?
But after the men leave, Randall heads to the driving range and proceeds to crush a basket of balls in spectacular fashion. As we see in a flashback, he and Jack didn’t leave the course on a bad note after all. Jack apologized, then they practiced a whole lot more. Randall continued playing golf in high school and college, and is actually quite good. (Side note: Jack also later invited Mr. Lawrence to dinner at the house.) So Randall’s so-called problems with the game were just a ruse to let the councilman feel like he had an advantage over him. Literally well-played, Randall!
ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK | Kevin and Nicky bicker, which drives Kevin to the gym to work off some frustration. Cassidy happens to be there at the same time. She a) is really, really strong and b) enjoys teasing him about the special attention he’s getting from the facility’s smoothie bar employee, who happens to be female. Kevin lets on that he was Instagram-stalking Zoe, and Cass is surprised to hear they broke up because he wanted kids and she didn’t. It should be noted: The Kevin-Cassidy flirting in this scene is at an extremely high level.
Kevin later goes out for a meal with Smoothie Girl, and they’re heading back to his RV for nookie when he sees Cassidy waiting outside. Kevin promptly dispatches his date to talk with Cassidy, who’s upset because she and Ryan argued. “I lost my temper,” she says, nearly crying as she wonders who’d want to be with someone as messed-up as she is. Kevin quickly corrects her, telling her, “You’re trying. That doesn’t make you unlovable. That makes you human.” She stares at him a moment, then kisses him, then heads for the door.
The next thing we know, Kevin comes out of his bedroom, shirtless, to find Nicky making a sandwich in the kitchen. Nicky apologizes for being grumpy earlier in the episode, then takes off. Kevin has a look on his face I can only describe as “Welp, that was probably not the best idea,” and a flashback reveals why: He stopped Cassidy from leaving after the kiss, and now she’s in his bed, wearing a very similar expression and nothing else. Earlier in the episode, Kevin brought up the Alcoholics Anonymous wisdom of avoiding romantic relationships in your first year on the program, so… this should be interesting!
Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!

A massive alligator, nicknamed Chubbs, has once again been spotted in Florida roaming along the clean-cut grass and shocking visitors at the Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Palmetto.
Strolling the course and casually enjoying the warmth of sunlight, the massive 15-foot reptile was not shy of cameras. While the enormous predator instilled fears in those who happened to come across it for the first time on Saturday, Chubbs has already become somewhat of a celebrity figure for local golfers, after it was first spotted at Buffalo Creek back in 2016.
Maintaining his celebrity status, the king-sized gator who has managed to stay alive over the years has been repeatedly captured roaming his domain and providing a thrilling experience for those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the crocodilian.
The management of Buffalo Creek Golf Course is well aware of Chubbs’ residential status and remain calm about it, as long as it keeps its distance from their clients.

Annika Sorenstam has learned a thing or two about what it takes to be the best.
So when the World Golf Hall of Fame member says Canada's Brooke Henderson is well on her way to becoming one of the top players on the LPGA Tour, it makes sense to pay attention.
Henderson's emotional win at the CP Women's Open last month in Regina could be just the beginning, the 72-time winner on the LPGA Tour said in an interview ahead of the final major of the season — the Evian Championship, starting Thursday in Evian-les-Bains, France.
"What Brooke did was an amazing display of golf," Sorenstam said of Henderson's triumph, which ended a 45-year drought for Canadians at their national championship. "If this continues, she will soon be one of the best in the world."
Sorenstam, who in 2014 was named the best Swedish female athlete in history, won three times in Sweden during her career. She's also a two-time winner of the Evian Championship, where Henderson will try to put an exclamation mark on a memorable year.
Sorenstam said she likes Henderson's game, which mixes an aggressive approach off the tee with a nice short game.
The combination, she said, is going to be beneficial for the native of Smiths Falls, Ont., for years to come.
"She has gotten off to a quick start in her young career," Sorenstam said of Henderson, who turned 21 on Monday. "I am sure there will be many more wins to follow."
Henderson has unfinished business at the Evian. She finished tied for ninth and tied for 25th in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Last year's tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to weather, and she finished tied for 58th.
"It's a beautiful golf course — usually challenging with the weather — but I think it suits my game well, particularly with how I'm striking the ball right now," said Henderson.
"Hopefully all the pieces come together for the week and I can play well again."
With more than $ 1.2 million US earned this season, Henderson sits second on the LPGA Tour money list with seven tournaments left. She's also third on the year=long Race to the CME Globe. If she tops that points list after the CME Group Tour Championship, the final event of the year, she'll win a $ 1-million bonus prize.
Henderson's CP Women's Open victory was her second of the year. She also captured the Lotte Championship in Hawaii in April.
"I think it's finally starting to sink in that I won our national championship, and it's just such an amazing feeling and a dream come true to know that my name will always be on that trophy," said Henderson.
With her win in Regina, Henderson figures to be a strong candidate for the Lou Marsh Trophy, given to Canada's athlete of the year.
The award has been claimed by a golfer only three times: Marlene Streit (1956), Sandra Post (1979), and Mike Weir (2003).
"It's something that would be an incredible achievement and honour to be in the conversation for," said Henderson. "Hopefully my game and my achievements on the course can put me in that position some day."
Henderson now has seven victories since turning professional. The most by a Canadian — male or female — is eight, a record held jointly by George Knudson, Post, and Weir, all of whom accomplished the feat much later in their careers.
Henderson celebrated her birthday at home with her family and said the week off was "definitely needed" after her win and then playing in the Cambia Portland Classic the week after, where she tied for 21st.
"It was nice having a tournament to just roll straight into to try and act as normal as possible, but to just be able to relax for a few days and reflect on everything has been great," she said.
"I always dreamt of doing this, but I didn't know if it would ever happen," said Henderson on the 18th green, letting her guard down a bit not to reveal doubt necessarily, but to acknowledge how much of a Herculean task it was to win the national championship.
This was no tepid performance; Henderson fired a seven-under-par 65 for a four-round number of 267 (21-under)—an unbelievable score given the varying scoring conditions and the hoopla that surrounded her all week.
Henderson started the week as the tournament's starlet and became its unquestioned star. Her face adorned everything from hotel key cards, to fan shuttles, to downtown signage in this prairie city.
"I'm now the national champion and that's pretty cool," she said, two weeks short of her 21st birthday.
Henderson started the day with a one-shot lead and though she was once tied early on, she snatched back the momentum soon after.
In a sport famous for its heartbreaks, including a few with a Maple Leaf attached to it, Henderson played the back nine as though she was having a leisurely stroll in the Regina rain.
The chase pack included Angel Lin, a 19-year-old from Monterrey Park, Calif., who was playing with Henderson in the final group. Yin, a Solheim Cup champion from last summer, did her best to keep her playing partner in sight but Henderson seemed to barely notice.
Yin made three straight birdies on the back nine.
Henderson responded with four.
"I put up a good fight, I got it going but Brooke was playing extremely well," said Yin. "I gave it my best."
Playing a hole ahead of Henderson was Su Oh, an Aussie upstart, who made eagle on the par 5, 14th to get it to 15-under. The chase pack grew, sure, but there was no catching Henderson. Oh eventually tied for fourth, seven shots back of the winner.
Hindsight can sometimes be bent to fit certain narratives but there was a degree of destiny to Henderson breaking the 45-year hex since Bourassa's victory. She first burst onto the scene as a 14-year-old when she won a Canadian Women's Tour event against a field that included this country's best female players and a handful of LPGA veterans.
And while it may sound odd to say that a young kid was on a long journey, the six years that followed her first star tun on the national stage followed a steady path.

It hasn't all been champagne and lollypops – there were whispers that she should be higher on the world rankings and a bit more accommodating to fans and media when things weren't going well, for example—but for the most part the plucky kid grew into a business-like champion before the country's eyes.
It was also an emotional ride in both the long view and the short one. Henderson fought back tears during her trophy presentation and later when she talked about her grandfathers, who both died this summer. There were more than a few tears from others: Golf Canada officials could be seen crying after her win and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Gail Graham, doing the network broadcast, was a teary-eyed picture of joy as Henderson putted out.
Everyone seemed to understand the significance of what Henderson was doing: as she walked up 18, a flock of Canada geese took flight but gave the 18th fairway a wide berth—it was like the birds didn't want to soil the moment.
Sunday's victory was Henderson's seventh, including a major championship won two years ago at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Sandra Post won eight times, a major included, but women's golf is a far different animal now.
There is little doubt that Henderson's achievement has now put her on her own level among Canadian women, one that is now approaching Mike Weir's eight PGA Tour titles, Masters included, as the best golfer this country has ever produced.
"It can be easy in this country to make a hockey comparison," said another Canadian Hall of Famer, Lorie Kane, who came close twice in this tournament. "But what Brooke did today was like my Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup."
That's a picture that may grate for some but consider this one: large groups of fans lingered on Sunday, including many kids waiting to get a glimpse of Henderson. A group of young boys, previously clad in Rider green, shed their jerseys to put on "Team Henderson" t-shirts.
There was a new national hero in their midst.
Henderson finished with a 21-under 267 total, sealing the win with a short birdie putt on the 18th hole at the Wascana Country Club.
American Angel Yin was alone in second place after a 68 and American Jennifer Song (67) was six shots behind at 15 under. Australians Minjee Lee (68) and Su Oh (69) were seven strokes off the pace in a fourth-place tie with South Korea's Amy Yang (68) and American Austin Ernst (69).
It was the first time a Canadian has won this tournament since Jocelyne Bourassa took the 1973 event — then called La Canadienne — at Montreal.
Henderson earned $ 337,500 US of the $ 2.25-million purse for her second victory of the season. It was her seventh career LPGA Tour win, moving her one behind Sandra Post's record for all-time victories by a Canadian.
Henderson, who started the day with a one-shot lead, was aggressive from the start on an overcast, chilly morning in front of a vocal group of adoring supporters.
Displaying a steely focus and no sign of nerves, she found the fairway with her opening drive and cleared a greenside bunker with her second shot, sticking the ball 12 feet from the pin.
Such a great moment in Canadian sport! Congrats @BrookeHenderson!

Henderson is one of the biggest hitters on the Tour but her short game can be inconsistent at times. The 20-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., set the early tone by sinking the birdie putt for a two-shot lead.
She gave the stroke back on the second hole after her drive found the rough. A line of fairway-hugging trees forced her to chip out on the fairway and Henderson would settle for bogey.
Back-to-back pars followed, allowing Oh to briefly pull even with the Canadian. However, Oh missed a 10-foot par putt on the fifth hole and Henderson drained a 25-footer for birdie to regain the lead.
After a birdie-bogey run, Henderson showed her form on the par-3, 206-yard eighth hole. With a challenging pin placement, she elevated her tee shot perfectly to clear a greenside ridge and bunker to leave herself an 18-foot putt.
She hit the birdie to move to 16-under for a three-shot cushion on Oh and defending champion Sung Hyun Park of South Korea.

Henderson was playing to win and not to just hang on.
A steady rain started to fall as the last few groups made the turn. Some of the Tour's biggest names were chasing Henderson but no one could get hot enough on the back nine to get close.
Yin hovered a few shots back but Henderson wouldn't budge.
The Canadian was making almost every shot look easy. The greens softened up a touch and Henderson was going for the pins. Approach shots were usually in tight and the putter was working.
Yin rolled in her third straight birdie on No. 15, and Henderson answered by knocking in her fourth birdie putt in a row to keep her three-shot lead.
She maintained that cushion through the 17th hole, allowing her to fully enjoy the moment on No. 18 as the packed gallery roared during her walk up the fairway.
After a beautiful drive, Henderson's approach shot from 69 yards out cozied up to the hole. She tapped in the short putt and the celebration was on.
Park (71), who finished at 13 under, will retain her No. 1 position in the world rankings for another week. She was tied with three-time CP Women's Open champion Lydia Ko (69) and several others.
American Mo Martin was another shot back at 12 under after firing a course-record 62.
Hamilton's Alena Sharp (71) was at 6 under, two shots ahead of Quebec City's Anne-Catherine Tanguay (73).
The 2019 CP Women's Open will be held at the Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont.

Francesco Molinari made history on Sunday, becoming Italy’s first major champion after fending off Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and a slew of other heavy hitters to win the British Open and take home the Claret Jug.
Molinari’s game was exceptional, playing bogey-free for the final two rounds en route to a win over the field by two strokes. The win was even more impressive considering he did it while playing alongside Woods, one of the most intimidating golfers to be paired with when in contention.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

TURNBERRY/GLASGOW, Scotland (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump was holed up at his golf course on the western coast of Scotland on Saturday ahead of a summit with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin that could be overshadowed by accusations Russians meddled in the U.S. 2016 election.
In an uproarious trip to Europe, Trump harangued members of the NATO military alliance, scolded Germany for its dependence on Russian energy, and shocked Britain by publicly criticizing Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit strategy.See the rest of the story at Business Insider
