The validation is out there: Gillian Anderson snagged Best Supporting Actress honors at Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards for her transformative performance as Margaret Thatcher on The Crown. Anderson beat Crown co-star Helena Bonham Carter as well as Julia Garner (Ozark), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) and Cynthia Nixon (Ratched). “Thank you… to Peter Morgan for imagining that I could inhabit Mrs. T,” Anderson said in her acceptance speech.
Anderson’s win capped a big night for The Crown, which also won best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress for Emma Corrin and Best Drama Actor for Josh O’Connor (see complete winners list). This is Anderson’s second Golden Globe trophy. She previously picked up Best Lead Actress honors in 1997 for her role as Dana Scully on The X-Files. Your move, Emmy. At Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Anya Taylor-Joy captured the Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series trophy for her work in Netflix’s chess drama The Queen’s Gambit. The 24-year-old actress’ formidable competition in the category included Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America) “I would love to thank Netflix… for letting us make the show we wanted to make,” Taylor-Joy said in her acceptance speech. “It’s obviously wonderful that everyone’s seen the show. I would do this project again and again and again; I learned so much. Thank you to the audiences that have watched it and supported the characters. It meant the world.”
Queen’s Gambit — which also won the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series or Movie (view complete winners list here) — ranks as Netflix’s most-watched scripted limited series to date, with 62 million member accounts tuning in to the show in the first 28 days following its Oct. 23 premiere. Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced on Wednesday morning by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. Sitcom titan Norman Lear will be honored this year with The Carol Burnett Award, while Jane Fonda is the latest recipient of filmdom’s Cecil B. DeMille Award. The 2021 Golden Globe ambassadors are Satchel and Jackson “Children of Spike” Lee. NBC will broadcast this year’s Golden Globes on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning to host for a fourth time, though from opposite coasts. Here is the list of TV’s nominees, as they are announced (eligibility runs Jan. 1 through Dec. 31): • DRAMA SERIES • DRAMA ACTOR • DRAMA ACTRESS • COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES • COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES ACTRESS • COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES ACTOR • TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES • TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – ACTOR • TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – ACTRESS • SERIES, TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – SUPPORTING ACTOR • SERIES, TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – SUPPORTING ACTRESS Now get on with your RANTS and RAVES! Talk about social distancing: There will be more than 2,700 miles between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler when they return to host the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards later this month. As previously announced, Fey and Poehler will be back to emcee the ceremony for the fourth time — but this go-around, they’ll do so from different coasts, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, our sister site Variety reports. Poehler will be in the Globes’ usual location, inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., while Fey will broadcast live from New York City’s The Rainbow Room, which sits at the top of Rockefeller Center. The SNL alums previously hosted the Globes together from 2013 to 2015. The bicoastal Golden Globe Awards will air live on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on NBC, following a nearly two-month delay. It is one of several awards shows to have been rescheduled in light of COVID-19 restrictions: The Grammy Awards will now take place Sunday, March 14, leading the SAG Awards to shift to Sunday, April 4 to avoid airing the same night as the music celebration. The 93rd Academy Awards, originally slated to be held Feb. 28 and air on ABC, instead are now scheduled for April 25. Meanwhile, the Tony Awards will be presented digitally this fall.

The Masked Singer Season 4 finale in a nutshell? To paraphrase the great Craig Robinson: All my life, I felt the heat of the sun. I never saw the face of the sun until now.”
Yep, Sun bested her competition in Wednesday’s two-hour episode, taking home the Golden Mask trophy and bragging rights. Mushroom came in second, and Crocodile placed third. Of course we’re going to tell you who was whom… but first, a quick recap of the performances!
CROCODILE | “Growing up, my family was dirt-poor,” Croc told us in his clue package, adding that he had to mow lawns to save money for his first alum, Journey’s Frontiers. He sang a Journey song, “Open Arms,” and his performance sounded like it was from a musical based on the album, if that makes any sense? (This is not a criticism. I love musicals!) I’m not sure I would’ve switched into that scream-y falsetto near the end, though. (That was a criticism.) This week’s schtick is that the singers give the judges gifts/clues: Crocodile’s was an angel for Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg. (My guess: Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.)
MUSHROOM | Mushroom informed us that his daughter — “my little ‘shroom” — was the inspiration for everything he did on the Masked stage. So he performed her favorite song, “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder, and it was a boppy, smoothly sung good time. Other clues included: “While most of you have shopped to my music in the supermarket and heard me on the radio, not a lot of you know me by name,” and a carton of mushroom cookie dough ice cream for Nicole Scherzinger. (My guess: “I Need a Dollar” singer Aloe Blacc.)
SUN | Sun referred to herself as a one-time “pop princess” in her set-up video, noting that she’s “been in the industry a really long time, since I was a kid.” Then she blew the doors off the place with her rendition of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story” (though it physically hurt me to have it truncated like that) and gave Robin Thicke mistletoe. (My guess: “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” singer LeAnn Rimes.)
THE UNMASKINGS | Crocodile was first to get booted; when he was unmasked, he was revealed to be Carter. Mushroom went next; he was revealed to be Blacc. And when Sun’s beams came off, she was revealed to be Rimes. (Go here to hear what all of them told TVLine about their time on the show!)
OH, AND ALSO | Among the judges, Jenny won the Golden Ear trophy.
Now it’s your turn. What did you think about the finale and the season on the whole? Grade ’em both via the polls below, then hit the comments to expand upon your thoughts!

There’s a disconnect that happens, looking at the bland, vacant face of Joseph James DeAngelo: This? your brain wants to say. This flaccid, ineffectual, 72-year-old is the Golden State Killer? This is the man who raped, murdered and stole with impunity for decades? The man who took diabolical delight in making sure his victims knew they’d never be free of him?
Indeed, that’s the response that even some of the survivors of DeAngelo’s attacks have in I’ll Be Gone in the Dark‘s finale, which chronicles the capture of the man previously known only as the Visalia Ransacker/Original Night Stalker/East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer. “This pathetic old man is the monster?” Jennifer Carole, the daughter of murder victim Lyman Smith, asks incredulously.
The hour is bittersweet on several levels — in part because true-crime writer Michelle McNamara didn’t live to see her years-long obsession with the case help bring DeAngelo to justice — and it features interviews with the serial killer’s family members and former fiancee — yep, that “Bonnie.” A few major revelations:
* Bonnie Colwell dated DeAngelo in college, and they eventually were engaged. But his behavior grew increasingly troubling (“so many of the things we did together, he pushed me toward fear”), and she broke it off after refusing to help him cheat in a class. Two weeks later in the wee hours of the morning, he tapped on her bedroom window, held up a gun and demanded that she accompany him to Reno so they could marry. Her father intervened and DeAngelo left; Colwell never saw him again. She adds that she doesn’t carry guilt about the attacks — after all, it’s not her fault that he seemed to be acting out some twisted revenge play against her when he committed his crimes — but “the empathy for the women who were attacked? I can’t turn that off.”
* DeAngelo’s nephew Wes Ryland drops a few bombs. The first: He remembers waking up one night as a child and seeing a man in a ski mask who told him to go back to sleep. Ryland’s childhood home was in Rancho Cordova, very close to a number of the attacks, causing Ryland to have the horrified notion that perhaps his uncle used the house as a safe haven to evade capture. The second: Ryland’s mother, who was DeAngelo’s sister, was raped by two men while the DeAngelo family lived in Germany. She was 7. DeAngelo witnessed the assault. “The very thing that happened to my mother is the very thing my uncle did to other women,” he says, trying not to cry. “I don’t understand that.”
* How did law-enforcement officials zero in on DeAngelo? It’s far more complicated than this, but essentially they used old DNA samples from crime scenes and online DNA databases (think 23andMe) to find their man, then went through his trash to get a DNA sample they could compare against the original. Science!
* DeAngelo’s name was not on McNamara’s hard drive, meaning she’d never singled him out as a suspect. But she had profiled him so well that she’d keyed in on several major attributes, including his law-enforcement background and his military history.
* Lisa Ortiz, DeAngelo’s cousin who lived with him for a while, interviews that she can’t reconcile that the Golden State Killer and the man she considers a surrogate father are one and the same. After he was taken into custody, she wrote him a letter. “You were a good dad. That is the one thing I know to be true,” it reads in part. “I hope you did care about me, because my heart is forever broken.”
* Patton Oswalt meets a few of the survivors at a book-signing event for McNamara’s work in Sacramento. It’s sweet and sad.
* Many of the survivors meet up for a gathering a year after DeAngelo was arrested. (Side note: Is it weird that seeing Gay and Bob Hardwick walk up to the house nearly made me cry? Is it weirder that I did cry when he notes that they’re the only marriage that survived the attacks?) “We’re not just survivor sisters, we are a survivor family,” Kris Pedretti tells the assembled women and men. Later, after revealing that she’s in therapy to deal with what the previous year dredged up, Gay says that she wanted two things for most of her life: to see her attacker sent to jail for his crimes, and for her to go to France. And both things happened this year: “He’s going to prison, and I’m going to Paris.”
* A title card at the end of the episode notes that in June 2020, DeAngelo pleaded guilty to 26 charges, including 13 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of kidnapping. He also confessed to all of the East Area Rapist attacks. In exchange for his guilty pleas, he received 11 consecutive life sentences.
Now it’s your turn. In the polls below, grade the finale and the docuseries on the whole, then hit the comments with your thoughts.

The Golden Girls is the latest sitcom to have an episode pulled from a streaming service due to a scene depicting blackface.
Hulu has pulled “Mixed Feelings” (Season 3, Episode 23), which sees Dorothy’s son Michael planning to marry an older Black woman named Lorraine. Bea Arthur’s character worries about the nuptials due to the age difference, while Lorraine’s family disapproves of their daughter marrying a white man, and attempts are made on both sides to call the whole thing off. Lorraine’s family arrives just as Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) are trying a new mud facial treatment, and as the two greet their new guests, Rose states, “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black.”
The episode’s removal is the latest in a string of shows that have seen episodes taken down or significantly edited due to blackface scenes or jokes. Earlier this week, three episodes of Scrubs were removed from Hulu for their depictions of blackface, following the removal of four episodes of 30 Rock for scenes featuring blackface. The British sketch show Little Britain was also removed from Netflix and other streaming platforms earlier this month for its pervasive use of blackface.
Additionally, The Office removed a scene featuring a character in blackface from a Season 9 episode, but left the rest of the episode intact. An entire episode of Community has thus far been pulled from at least Netflix’s library. In the Season 2 episode, Chang (Ken Jeong) is seen in blackface while showing up to a Dungeons & Dragons game, as he proceeds to explain that he was cosplaying as “a dark elf.”

NBC will hand out its Golden Globes a little later than usual next year: As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 ceremony has been postponed nearly two months, now airing on Sunday, Feb. 28.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the delay on Monday. Though an airdate had not yet been set for the 78th annual ceremony, the Golden Globes typically air on the first Sunday of the calendar year, kicking off awards season.
“To accommodate both domestic and international film and television productions, the HFPA will provide further guidance around eligibility, voting period and revised nominations announcement timing in the coming weeks,” the organization said in a statement.
As previously reported, SNL alumni Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — who hosted the Golden Globes as a pair from 2013 to 2015 — will be back to preside over the 2021 ceremony, though it has yet to be decided if the Globes will take place in person or virtually. This year’s Globes, hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais, averaged 18.3 million total viewers and a 4.3 demo rating, down 2 and 17 percent from 2019 to hit eight- and 12-year lows.
The postponement comes one week after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opted to delay the 2021 Oscars. Originally scheduled for Feb. 28 (when the Globes will now air), the 93rd Academy Awards are now set for Sunday, April 25 on ABC.
Among the major award ceremonies, this year’s Tony Awards (originally scheduled for June 7 on CBS) were postponed back in March and have yet to be rescheduled, while the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted Primetime Emmy Awards (still scheduled for Sept. 20 on ABC) have yet to either be moved or announced as a virtual presentation. (CBS will air a virtual Daytime Emmys on June 26.) Next year’s Grammys are scheduled for Jan. 31 on CBS, one week after the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards (on TNT/TBS).

DC’s Stargirl is ready to shine on assorted screens, more than two decades after the young superhero made her DC Comics debut.
Geoff Johns, the veteran comic books scribe and screenwriter who recently served as DC Entertainment’s CCO for a stretch, created Stargirl aka Courtney Whitmore back in 1999, inspired by his late sister, who had died in the TWA Flight 800 explosion. With the character’s live-action debut, Johns’ vision takes on new meaning, in a series that is light, lively and abundant with star-spangled, family-friendly thrills.
“We all had a lot of fun working on it, and I’m glad that tone is coming through,” Johns said in speaking with TVLine. “We wanted to create something that was for everybody.”
Brec Bassinger (of Hulu’s All Night) headlines the series as Courtney, a spry teen whose life in Los Angeles is upended when her widowed mom, Barbara (Felicity‘s Amy Smart), remarries and in turn relocates them to super-quaint Blue Valley, Nebraska. Though Courtney is no insta-fan of stepdad Pat Dugan (Roadies‘ Luke Wilson) or his son Mike (Trae Romano), things literally brighten up when she discovers in her new home’s cellar a glowing staff that veritably calls out to her. Why has it chosen her, and does it have anything to do with the staff’s previous owner, Starman? Those answers and far bigger questions are addressed in short order, as the series unfolds on DC Universe (every Monday, starting May 18) and on The CW (Tuesdays at 8/7c).
Here, Johns details his development of the superhero series’ tone, some critical castings, and how the version seen on The CW might differ from DC Universe’s longer cuts.
TVLINE | My review likened Stargirl‘s tone to the old Walt Disney movies with Kurt Russell a la The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes, while I saw another site draw a comparison to Steven Spielberg/Amblin films. Is that what you were aiming for?
Yeah. You know, we actually held a screening of Back to the Future for the cast and crew before we started shooting, as kind of a kick-off party but also to show the talent what we all wanted — Glen Winter, the director, and everyone working on the show. It was really all about trying to capture that. I’ve said this before, but I loved those movies like Back to the Future, E.T. and Goonies, where they took something like time travel, which was only for genre fans, and made it super-accessible and an emotional story.
TVLINE | And set in, like, Anytown, USA, not New York or Los Angeles.
Yeah. And so I kind of say, what Back to the Future did for time travel and E.T. did for aliens, our aim was to do something like that for superheroes. A small town, grounded, family-oriented, fun, colorful…. That’s what we hope to do.
TVLINE | Had you been wanting to play with live-action Golden Age DC heroes for a while? Was that on a to-do list?
Forever. Ever since I wrote Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. 20 years ago.
TVLINE | It’s really special to see those distinct costumes come to life.
LJ Shannon designed all the costumes, and we tried to stay as true to the lore as possible. But yeah, seeing the colors of Hourman, that gold, I love it. And I’ve always loved his hood. And Doctor Mid-Nite, Wildcat…. Seeing all of them kind of come to life is so much fun because it’s such a great, unexplored corner of the DC Universe. I mean, I wrote the book JSA for almost a decade and the thing I loved about it is that it was kind of “off to the side.” Like, they didn’t really reach deep into that world of the Golden Age. James Robinson did it in such a wonderful way with Starman and The Golden Age, and he’s been a friend of mine since I was 19, so I really wanted him to work on the show because he loves the Golden Age characters as much as I do. He always comes at superheroes from heart, like I try to. It was fun to work on the show with people that were just getting to know the characters as well as people like James.
TVLINE | What I like about the Golden Age costumes is they’ve got personality. Everyone is not in form-fitting spandex, and there’s utility to them, there’s character. That applies to the villains as well.
They’re utilitarian, like you said. Like, one of the things I love about Doctor Mid-Nite’s costume is there’s a lot of canvas and leather to it.
TVLINE | It’s a little steampunky.
A little steampunky, while Hourman’s feels a little more slick. They all have their own individual look, and hopefully if we get to do more seasons, we have ideas for some more characters to explore. There’s a couple that we haven’t shown this season.
TVLINE | Talk about casting Courtney — who of course is a tribute to your late sister — and what ultimately gave Brec Bassinger the edge.
Rich Delia, our casting director, is wonderful. He did Shazam! and IT, so he’s really got a very amazing eye for young talent. We saw hundreds of really talented actors — really, really talented actors — but they had to have a specific mix of youth and power and humor and warmth to them that embodied Stargirl, because she’s so proactive. She’s like the opposite of a reluctant hero, she’s so enthusiastic.
TVLINE | She’s got spunk.
And I love that. I love that her drive is so powerful and she’s so ready to go in and so willing to do the right thing — and it gets her in trouble, which is an attribute my sister had a little bit. But I love that she’s fearless and fights for what’s right. I mean, she does it before she’s even Stargirl. That’s just who Courtney is. It was important to find somebody that could do that and still have a real warmth to her, because she’s not just going in there and be kicking ass. Her real superpower is seeing the potential in people — like [stepdad] Pat, who she tells in Episode 2, “You can do this.” And he’s never heard that before from anyone.
TVLINE | No, he’d actually been told the opposite — “Don’t you dare try to do this. Scram, you’re the sidekick.”
Yes, and the fact that she says it so matter-of-factly, not realizing how much that really means to him…. When he hears that for the first time, Luke [Wilson] gives her that wonderful look, where you appreciate how much that means to him. Her power is to find that untapped potential, and when we saw all these actors, right when Brec came on and read, she killed it. It was funny, it was heartfelt, it was real. She had that youth and energy….
TVLINE | And I feel like she’s nearly an actual teenager playing a teenager, not someone who is 25, 26.
She really sells it. Right when she came in, it was like, “That’s her.” That was it.
TVLINE | Luke Wilson is pretty perfect too, as Pat. How did his casting come about?
Ever since I saw Bottle Rocket, I loved, loved him, and when I was writing this I always envisioned Luke. Luke Wilson was Pat Dugan to me in every way, and I wrote it for him. I didn’t know him, but I sent the script to him with a note about the character in the series, and he read it, he liked it. And when we met, he came with all these hilarious ideas about Pat and [his son] Mike that are littered throughout the season.
TVLINE | Yeah, he seems all in on this role.
Oh, 100 percent, and he’s become an incredibly good friend of mine. I was in Atlanta the whole time during production, and we spent a lot of time together on and off set, and he’s just a wonderful guy, and he was so committed and so generous to everybody. Brec and the kids, they all looked up to him, and that was a fun environment to be in because there was so much enthusiasm among everybody. Luke would always have ideas — like he suggested a different song for an Episode 2 montage, this Johnny Cash song, which is amazing and perfect for Pat Dugan. He got really into the character.
TVLINE | If anything made me uneasy about the first few episodes, it was the visual of adult male villains such as Brainwave whaling on this teenage girl, as Courtney starts learning the ropes. Was that a concern, “how much is too much”?
It was. I mean, look, this show was designed to be for families. When I was young, we watched Incredible Hulk and Knight Rider, and it was fun to watch shows as a family together. The DC Universe has done stuff that’s much more adult, but Stargirl and the JSA, they’re more traditional in the way superheroes are presented with good and evil and how violent or graphic you get. There was definitely a concentrated effort to make this accessible to everyone so kids could watch it with their parents or alone, or parents can watch it alone…. Hopefully there’s something for everyone. But at the same time, we want the stakes to feel real.
TVLINE | So, her getting her ass handed to her, and visibly bruised up, in the first episodes establishes very real and scary stakes.
Exactly, and we didn’t want to shy away from that. We didn’t want to shy away from the dirt and the blood at times because we do want the stakes to be real. We want the emotion to be real. We try and present a world that is different and heightened and obviously, you know, a little timeless in a way, but the stakes have to be real, not just physically but emotionally.
TVLINE | Lastly, how would you typify the edits you’re making to the DC Universe episodes to fit into 42 minutes on The CW? Because Episode 1, for example, appears to be almost 10 minutes longer on DC Universe.
Episodes 1 and 2 are longer on the DC Universe cut by like, eight minutes or something.
TVLINE | So what are you cutting?
Scenes. Scenes. Rather than “death by a thousand cuts.” Our pacing is extremely purposeful, and we like to keep it. We like to live in scenes, and we don’t need to have dialogue every second. We want people to react, and we want people to experience things with our characters rather than be told everything. So there were scenes that were dropped from Episodes 1 and 2, where we really focused on Courtney and Pat. But from Episode 3 on, they’re almost identical. You won’t be able to tell.
TVLINE | But the scenes missing from 1 and 2, it’s nothing consequential if someone can’t get to the DC Universe version?
Well, I think that they’ll be caught up on everything that they see from there. We had to make choices, but they should be able to catch up on everything. There’s some stuff that obviously we love, but you should be able to follow the show without any problem.

David Walliams has donated a huge £10k to his Britain’s Got Talent golden buzzer contestant Christian Kildruff, the five-year-old who has embarked on his own charity initiative to help the NHS. As our health service is pushed to the limits, people everywhere have been raising money to help our brave hero’s out and Christian is one of them.
The youngster, who suffers from cerebral palsy, aims to walk three-miles on his frame to raise money and David couldn’t resist helping him out.
They have raised more than £25,000 so far for the frontline workers so far, and Christian has almost reached his three-mile target.
He is part of choir Sign With Us alongside his older sister Jade, and the group stunned the BGT judges with their performance.
Leaving Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon in tears, the group sang and signed a beautiful rendition of This Is Me from the musical The Greatest Showman.

Jade set up the sign language choir in order to help her communicate with her brother, and it’s safe to say they won over the nation’s hearts.
Taking to Twitter, the proud sister shared the news with her followers.
She wrote: “OMG can’t stop crying, massive thank you @davidwalliams first you made our group’s dreams come true on @BGT with the #goldenbuzzer and now you’ve donated a whopping £10,000 to Christians 3-mile challenge fundraiser for the @NHSuk couldn’t thank you enough.”
X Factor star Olly Murs, was also among those who made a generous donation to Christian’s cause.
Jade has been documenting Christian’s journey and people have come out in full force to support the youngster’s mission.
Days after their hugely successful audition was aired on TV, Jade opened up to the publication about how important the choir is to her.
“When Christian was born, he was stillborn and he couldn’t breathe for 24 minutes and because his brain was starved of oxygen that led to his disabilities,” she revealed.
“At five weeks old we decided to foster Christian and he was put up for adoption but because of how he was no one wanted to adopt him.”
