Update, 10:30: If this is an indication of the quality of the images we should expect over the next several days, we’re in for a treat.

Original article follows.
About 24 hours prior to its collision, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) probe performed its last course correction based on commands sent by ground controllers. “It’s pointed to within a football field of the central body,” said Bobby Braun of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL). “That last maneuver was spot-on.”

Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world’s most popular video site. Chrome is the world’s most popular browser. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it’s just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google’s next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.
Protocol’s Janko Roettgers has a report on “Project Caviar,” Google’s plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby’s old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company’s technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol’s report says $ 50 streaming sticks end up having around $ 2 of that price tag go to Dolby.
Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that’s three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Look beyond the scatological set pieces that made them popular, and you can see a touch of Frank Capra in many of Peter and Bobby’s sweet misfit yuk- and yuck-fests. Lately, the writer-director has simply been reversing the ratio of Goofus to Gallant. His latest film, The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which premiered last night at TIFF, reverses it further in Gallant’s favor. This is another true story of broadening horizons during the 1960s that feels like it could have been conceived for the screen sometime in the 1980s. And it’s further proof that Farrelly did better, more charming work when he ballasted his soft side with raunch.

Going prestige-picture straight has not, thankfully, killed his endearing love of knuckleheads. Here, as in Green Book, there is the anchoring presence of an amiable New Yawk lunk: John “Chickie” Donohue (Zac Efron), a hard-drinking Brooklyn dude with a not-particularly-enlightened perspective on the war in Vietnam. One night in his local watering hole (tended by Farrelly’s old Kingpin secret weapon, Bill Murray), he hatches a foolhardy scheme: He’ll bring a beer to each of his four buddies still stationed in Vietnam, as a thank you for their service. No one, not even Chickie himself, expects him to actually go through with this cockamamie plan. But soon enough, he’s on a cargo ship headed for the war, duffel bag of PBR over his shoulder.
Having just won Best Picture with a movie about an Italian American from midcentury New York, is Farrelly following further in the footsteps of Francis Ford Coppola? Co-written by Brian Currie and Pete Jones, adapting the memoir of the same name, The Greatest Beer Run Ever becomes something akin to, well, his version of Apocalypse Now. (No, really.) Chickie, a well-intentioned fool, bumbles into a war zone like a frat boy taking a late-night bet too far. He ends up crisscrossing in and out of danger, delivering brews to old friends who receive him less with open arms than are-you-actually-insane admonishments. It’s to the movie’s credit that being amused by Chickie’s ambitiously stupid journey of patriotic gratitude doesn’t preclude recognizing what a blinkered idiot he is for embarking upon it. He’s a “war tourist” getting in over his head for the story.
Beer Run might have worked a little better as satire, with a version of Chickie too thick-skulled to ever acknowledge what a bad idea this little bring-the-party-to-them pilgrimage was. Instead, a fish out of water comedy becomes a tale of innocence lost, as our hero starts to wake up to the reality of the war that the cameras don’t capture and the sense in his protesting younger sister’s claims that LBJ is lying to the public. Without articulating it quite so directly, the film becomes about Chickie realizing that there’s no discrepancy between supporting the troops and opposing the war — an awakening plenty of actual Americans went through during the long death march of Vietnam. In practice, though, that’s akin to Futurama’s savvy spoof of M*A*S*H*, with Farrelly toggling the switch from “irreverent” to “maudlin” and just keeping it there.
There are poignant moments here, many of them courtesy of Russell Crowe as a war photographer who finds some begrudged respect for Chickie’s self-imposed mission. But while the film isn’t quite as risible as Green Book (it’s not a glorified white savior story in buddy-comedy drag, in other words), it has an awfully similar arc: A myopic doofus has his eyes opened by the hardships of others, gaining edification through the suffering he witnesses (in this case, on a countrywide scale). In other words, all the horrors of Vietnam — not avoided or sanitized, exactly, but certainly selectively encountered — are just the catalyst for a screw-up to grow up and gain a more nuanced perspective on the world. Perhaps you could call The Greatest Beer Run Ever Farrelly’s attempt to do the same. If so, it makes an inadvertent case for immaturity in the process.

Just Dance 2023 is due to hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch on November 22nd. It’ll come to Google Stadia at a later date.
This marks the first time in Just Dance history that players will be able to get down with friends live and online. The new Online Groups feature in Just Dance 2023 allows players to team up with people they know or other folks around the world, and it has an emoji communication system. The game supports cross-platform play. And, of course, there’s always local multiplayer for in-person dance-offs.

Just Dance 2023 will include 40 new universes and songs at launch, including “Physical” by Dua Lipa and “More” by K/DA. With a focus on transitioning Just Dance into a live service, rather than a series of discrete titles, Ubisoft will likely have a regular cadence of new material to drop on its dancers post-launch, so don’t stress too much about the track list for now.

USB has come a long way since the 12Mbps days of the ’90s. It has waved goodbye to USB-B and is inching away from USB-A in favor of the slim, reversible USB-C connector. Data transfer rates have increased so dramatically that we can run powerful setups with high-resolution monitors, speedy external storage, and numerous other devices from the USB Implementers Forum’s latest open standard, USB4.
USB4 unifies the USB and Intel Thunderbolt protocols for the first time, expanding USB’s capabilities while further dividing the technology into different performance classes. Adding features like dynamic bandwidth allocation ensures that USB4 is by far the most advanced USB generation. While there are PCs, docks, and cables supporting USB4, we’ve yet to see everything the protocol can do, like powering an eGPU without Intel branding.
With all that going on, we thought it would be a great time to put a spotlight on the latest and greatest generation of USB. We’ve whipped up a handy refresher for all things USB4, breaking down the various key aspects of the spec, from how it differs from other specs to protocol tunneling, Alt Mode, and power delivery.

When you think of Halloween, what do you think of? Perhaps you think of candy, pumpkins, black cats, and scarecrows. You wouldn’t be alone, as these elements of classic holiday iconography have been used and celebrated for decades, even after they weren’t necessarily considered scary anymore. They have become intrinsically associated with spooky season to the point where you can’t look at a pumpkin anymore without thinking of it with a carved face.
For the 31st iteration of Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Orlando Resort has taken these symbols and elevated them for modern sensibilities. Pumpkins have been given demented sentience, witches now make their famous brew from human blood, and scarecrows come to life to stalk the living.
However, that’s only a taste of what the event this year has to offer. /Film was invited to Universal Orlando for an exclusive opening night experience, and while not without its issues, Halloween Horror Nights 31 will certainly have a terrifying experience for everyone.

For the most part, Universal’s slate of haunted houses this year is a success. “Halloween” is a pitch-perfect homage to John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. “The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare” will surprise Horror Nights purists, as the collaboration between the event and singer Abel Tesfaye is appropriately disorienting and surprisingly gory. “Spirits of the Coven” is also a stand-out for its immersive theming and storytelling.
“Bugs: Eaten Alive” strikes a good balance between creepiness and campiness, as its over-the-top bug designs elicit both screams and chuckles. “Fiesta de Chupacabra” also makes good use of puppetry to convey the titular folk creature while also honoring the various Hispanic and Latinx communities that call Orlando home.
However, one house is undeniably the best of the bunch. “Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake” is both aesthetically gorgeous and teeming with startling scares. It also stands as perhaps the most depressing house the Universal Orlando team has created, and if there is one house that absolutely must be experienced at the event, it is “Dead Man’s Pier.”
Some houses, unfortunately, are not quite as effective. “Horrors of Blumhouse,” which features scenes from “Freaky” and “The Black Phone,” has some very disconnected scene transitions that suck the tension out of the experience, as well as some obvious cast absences (sorry, there are no Vince Vaughn lookalikes in the “Freaky” section). “Universal Monsters: Legends Collide” also feels more like solely The Mummy’s story instead of the crossover with Dracula and The Wolfman teased in promotional material.

The classic Halloween iconography is shown in full force throughout HHN’s scare zones. Set forth by the nefarious Pumpkin Lord (a character that featured in last year’s haunted house, “Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin”), “Horrors of Halloween” give attendees a first look at the four other scare-zones sprinkled throughout the park in small sections. While nothing special, it is fun seeing the Pumpkin Lord occasionally giving monologues about how evil he is.
“Graveyard: Deadly Unrest” takes place in a creepy cemetery, with ghosts from all eras find themselves rising from their graves. The music really ties this zone together, along with the varied and unique makeup put onto each scare actor. “Scarecrow: Cursed Soil,” a sequel to the 2017 house “Scarecrow: The Reaping,” is also impressive from an atmospheric perspective, but its large sets made its location on an already narrow walkway feel even tighter.
“Sweet Revenge” transports attendees back to the 1950s, smack dab in the middle of a Halloween festival gone horribly wrong. While the zone’s story goes that the candy consumed by the trick-or-treating kids turned them into crazed killers, those who haven’t already read up about the event might not understand what’s going on. The same could go for “Conjure The Dark,” which takes place on the very first All Hallow’s Eve when an unnamed witch sets chaos upon a village. At least that scare zone has a mini-show that explains the plot, but if you’ve missed it, you might be out of luck.

It is hard to please everyone at an event like this, especially since everyone has different ideas of what makes something scary. Some houses and zones at Halloween Horror Nights 31 might be weaker than others, but the sheer scope of the event and the extensive planning that goes into it cannot be ignored. It is horrific spectacle at its best, and if you are able to get the Express pass add-on, it is certainly worth the price of admission. Unfortunately, that Express pass is necessary if you want to experience as many houses as possible, as regular admission can often span more than an hour in the fall Florida heat.
When looking at HHN 31 as a cohesive event, it works. The combination of classic Halloween iconography, modern pop culture, and, of course, Universal’s continued honoring of its Classic Monsters makes for a holistic Halloween experience. Although houses like “Blumhouse” and “Descendants of Destruction” (which is so forgettable, I forgot to mention it in the house section) aren’t among the best houses the event has ever done, the amount of satisfying and genuinely scary houses on the lineup makes up for these weaker links. These highlights, combined with the lore-heavy scare zones, will make for a fun experience that can only be achieved by Universal Orlando’s scareactors and creative team.
Halloween Horror Nights 31 runs from September 2 to October 31 at Universal Orlando Resort. If you’re over on the West Coast, Universal Studios Hollywood‘s iteration will run from September 9 to October 31.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday bemoaned how the New York Post was, in his view, defending his political foe, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell.
Trump lashed out at the media outlet in a series of Truth Social posts, writing that it was once his "favorite newspaper."
"If anything, The New York Post Editorial Board (whatever happened to them?) should be talking about the brand new revelation of the fired Trump hating 'Special Agent' In Charge of the horrendous, and unnecessary, Mar-a-Lago Break-In," Trump wrote.
"Sadly, the Media in our Country is so afraid of being sued that they never want to mention anything having to do with the corrupt Election of 2020!" he continued.
Trump appeared to be incensed over an opinion piece from the Post titled "Republicans are lucky to have Mitch McConnell: Trump's gripes are beyond ridiculous." The article referred to Trump's baseless voter fraud claims as "'stolen election' lunacy" while lauding McConnell — who was the Senate majority leader during Trump's presidency — for being "crucial" to the former president's successes while in office.
"Trump's just peeved that McConnell refused from the start to endorse his "I really won" nonsense — another stand that proves Mitch is exactly the leader Senate Republicans need," the Post's editorial board wrote.
Trump made several dozen other Truth Social posts on Tuesday, in which he launched into tirades about his political enemies like President Joe Biden, raged about the 2020 presidential election, and re-tweeted QAnon-linked messages, among other things.
The Post isn't the first media outlet to have attracted Trump's ire. In July, Trump lashed out at the "Fox & Friends" talk show after one of its hosts questioned his poll numbers and said the show had "gone to the dark side."
Meanwhile, there have been rumblings that media mogul Rupert Murdoch's empire might be turning on the former president.
The Post slammed Trump in a scorching editorial in July, calling him "unworthy to be this country's chief executive again." Additionally, the Wall Street Journal — another Murdoch-owned publication — called Trump "The President Who Stood Still on Jan. 6" while praising former Vice President Mike Pence.
Earlier this month, Fox News host Eric Shawn asked aloud during a live broadcast if Trump could have tried to "sell or share" classified information with Russia or Saudi Arabia.
As for McConnell, the senator and Trump have had a bitter history.
In February 2021, McConnell rebuked Trump for his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" during the Capitol riot. "There is no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day," McConnell said in a speech before the Senate.
Since then, Trump has repeatedly torn into McConnell. For instance, in November, Trump called McConnell and other lawmakers who supported President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill RINOs — short for "Republicans in Name Only."
Trump has also labeled McConnell an "Old Crow" on several occasions and accused the latter of "jeopardizing" other Republican senators' reelection chances.
Earlier this month, Trump also called McConnell's wife, former Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, "crazy" and "coco" in several Truth Social posts.

Swiping a diamond necklace from a heavily guarded museum is nothing compared to Lupin‘s newest objective: getting back Assane’s kidnapped son.
A newly released teaser for the French heist drama’s remaining five episodes (premiering this summer) picks up where the series last left off, with Assane’s son in the clutches of Pellegrini’s man and Assane warning the kidnapper, “If you touch my son, I’ll kill you.”
But Assane isn’t the only one going to extreme measures to get what he wants. “We’re going to use his kid as bait. He’ll come right to us,” Pellegrini smugly proclaims.
The series centers on Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy), whose childhood was turned upside down when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Twenty-five years later, Assane uses “Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar” as his inspiration to avenge his father. In the upcoming episodes, “Assane’s quest for revenge against Hubert Pelligrini has torn his family to pieces,” per the official synopsis. “With his back to the wall, he now has to think of a new plan, even if it means putting himself in danger.”
Lupin debuted in January, shortly after which it became a breakout hit, with Netflix projecting that the drama would be sampled by more than 70 million households* in its first four weeks of release.
*The numbers that Netflix reports are based on subscribers who have watched at least two minutes of a piece of content.
