Liverpool vs Newcastle: Premier League latest score, goals and updates

LIVERPOOL 2-0 NEWCASTLE | LOVREN (10), SALAH (47)

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Shaqiri, Mane, Firmino

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Diame, Hayden, Kenedy, Joselu, Muto

  • Jurgen Klopp makes three changes to the side that beat Wolves
  • Dejan Lovren opens the scoring with a screamer
  • Mohamed Salah converts penalty

LIVERPOOL 2-0 NEWCASTLE | SALAH

48: Converted. Mohamed Salah bags his 15th goal of the season to double Liverpool’s advantage. You’d have to think that’s game, set and match.

PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL

47: Well that’s the perfect way to start the half. Dummett can’t deal with Salah inside the penalty area and referee Graham Scott has no hesitation in pointing towards the spot.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 NEWCASTLE

45: OK we’re back underway at Anfield. I imagine that Jurgen Klopp would have tried to play down the fact that Manchester City are drawing during his half-time team-talk. Concentrate on your own game and all that… No changes for either side.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 NEWCASTLE

HT: Referee Graham Scott blows his whistle at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp’s troops head to the dressing room with a deserved 1-0 lead. You wouldn’t say Liverpool have really got out of first gear yet.

Elsewhere Manchester City are still level with Leicester at the King Power Stadium. That’s 1-1.

44: Danger! Liverpool have themselves a free-kick around 30 yards from goal. Trent and big Shaq are standing over it… wooosh! Shaqiri fizzes a low effort over the wall and Dubravka manages to get his fingertips to it.

42: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross causes problems for Dubravka, who is caught in two minds. He stays on his line but a near-post flick can’t find a red shirt in the middle.

39: Virgil van Dijk fancies adding another goal to his Liverpool tally when Xherdan Shaqiri finds him in the middle – but Fernandez makes the block. Would have been memorable!

36: Firmino pulls down the tireless Muto in Liverpool territory – and the Toon have a BIG chance to deliver here… rubbish. It’s played short and Ritchie ends up giving away a free-kick of his own.

33: Newcastle have dropped their pace a touch with the Toon seemingly content to keep it at 1-0 until the break. Liverpool are probing from right to left but have just the one shot on target to show for it.

30: Newcastle just don’t look to have the tools to breach this Liverpool defence. They’ve been more positive than I’ve seen them against the top sides – but just 30 percent possession could take its toll as the game continues.

27: As it stands Liverpool are SIX points clear at the top of the table…

24: Clearly inspired by Shaqiri’s earlier effort – Ritchie decides to unleash a long-ranger of his own that flies wide of the target.

21: It’s all Liverpool now. Xherdan Shaqiri fancies his chances from distance but smashes it high into the stands.

19: Ooooh, Leicester have equalised against Manchester City! It’s 1-1 thanks to Marc Albrighton. Back to things at Anfield, Dubravka makes a good save to deny Sadio Mane who’d been found by Firmino.

16: The good news for Liverpool supporters is that they lead at Anfield, the bad news is that Tottenham and Manchester City are also ahead thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Christian Eriksen.

13: Newcastle have to be careful here because there’s potential for the floodgates to open. Shaqiri frees Salah down the right but Diame gets back.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 NEWCASTLE | LOVREN

10: Dejan Lovren on the half-volley… That’s not a sentence I’ve ever written before.

Newcastle have been excellent in the early stages but an absolute hum-dinger from the centre-back has given Liverpool the lead.

Lovren smashes in a powerful shot after the ball breaks loose in the box.

8: Close! Newcastle proving tricky in these early stages with Muto forcing a mistake from Wijnaldum near the halfway line. He finds Ritchie on the opposite flank, who delivers a dangerous cross that Joselu heads wide.

5: Way to make me look stupid guys. Newcastle win themselves a corner with Yedlin using his pace to good effect. Liverpool clear after Fernandez skewed his header.

3: Newcastle have set their stall out early. The visitors will not be doing anything crazy like attacking… Liverpool in complete control in the opening stages.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 NEWCASTLE

1: I think the fella in the picture below needs to work on his spacing. He obviously went way too big on Firmino, squeezed Salah in and the rest is impossible. Anyway, enough about signs around the ground. We’re underway at Anfield!

Nothing has changed…

14:54: Jurgen Klopp insists he felt nothing when Manchester City handed the initiative to his side in the title race.

“Nothing has changed. Absolutely nothing. We are focused so far always on the next game. That hasn’t changed since Saturday,” he said.

“When people are not involved but emotionally involved, such as friends and people like that, see City lose 3-2 then I get all these messages saying, ‘Wow. Unbelievable. Blah, blah, blah’, and I don’t even feel it.

“Nothing is taken for granted. Don’t think because we have that amount of points and they have that amounts of points (that Liverpool will win the title). “If you think that, then that’s the moment when things go wrong. And they can still go wrong, that’s how life is.”

Hello Muto

14:48: Jurgen Klopp appears to be very knowledgeable about Newcastle’s starting XI. The German has clearly done his homework.

“Rafa changed things a bit,” Klopp explained. “We should expect two strikers, Joselu and Muto, I know Muto from Mainz and he is a good player. More a 5-3-2 or 4-4-2, we will see. But it’s clear – we have to be dominant, and we know how strong Newcastle are on the counter-attack so that’s important.

“Set pieces will be important too, so the whole tool-box is needed.”

Stronger than 2005…

14:45: Rafa Benitez famously guided Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005 courtesy of a remarkable fightback against AC Milan in the final in Istanbul, and he believes Jurgen Klopp has a stronger squad at his disposal than he had at the time.

Asked if the current Liverpool side is the best since his, he replied: “It’s difficult to say ‘team’ because always in my head is that when we beat Real Madrid and Barcelona, there was a great team, but what I think is they have the best squad.

“When you spend money, you bring in better players – they have signed Fabinho, spent some money on (Naby) Keita, but they kept (Jordan) Henderson and they kept (Georginio) Wijnaldum, so you keep the good players and you bring in new players, so the squad is better.

“What does that mean? That in different competitions, different games, still you have a strong team on the pitch.”

Twitter round-up

Phil: Hoping Rafa Benitez gets a good reception today but also hoping he goes back to Newcastle really unhappy! Come on Liverpool!

Conor: Arsenal and City coming up… very little rotation in today’s team. Surprise! If ever there was a chance to give the main lads a rest and start the likes of Origi, Studge it was today but the boss knows what he’s doing.

Elis: Taking my four year old daughter to her first football match. Not saying she’s not up for it, but she’s taking two colouring books and is dressed as Cinderella.

Elsewhere…

14:35: Plenty of Premier League fixtures to feast on today. Fulham and Wolves drew 1-1 with Aleksandar Mitrovic having a stoppage-time effort cleared off the line.

Burnley v Everton, Crystal Palace v Cardiff, Leicester v Manchester City, Liverpool v Newcastle, Manchester United v Huddersfield, Tottenham v Bournemouth, Brighton v Arsenal – 5.15pm, Watford v Chelsea – 7.30pm.

Twitter round-up

Josh: I actually didn’t expect a full strength side today with Arsenal coming up this weekend so I’m quite surprised by the lineup but if it gets us the 3 points then no complaints. Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane and Salah all starting so no messing around from Klopp. Let’s go Reds!

Ally: Newcastle have only scored seven goals away from home but only conceded seven in their eight PL away matches, kept three clean sheets. They could be hard to break down so we’ll need to be patient. Early goal would be nice.

Heath: Really annoyed I have to work, but there aren’t many more fun days in the Premier League calendar than Boxing Day. Come on you Reds!!

Yeah, Imagine having to work on Boxing Day, Heath…

Rafa Benitez backs Liverpool

14:25: Rafael Benitez has backed Liverpool to push reigning champions Manchester City all the way… Well what else was he going to say?!

Asked if they are title favourites, he said: “Still it’s too soon, but I think both teams are a little bit ahead of the others. I haven’t seen the Manchester City game, but nobody was expecting that.

“But as I’ve said before, Crystal Palace, the three up front, you can buy them for £50million, each one, so it sometimes can happen when teams have good players to play on the counter-attack.

“But still I can see Liverpool, I can see Manchester City ahead of the others. Liverpool are in form, they are doing really well and it will be a very difficult game for us.”

The other Mo…

14:20: Mohamed Diame has warned Newcastle they will have to be even more miserly if they are to deny Premier League leaders Liverpool victory.

One of the few positives the Magpies were able to take from a dreadful 0-0 draw with bottom-of-the-table Fulham at St James’ Park on Saturday was the clean sheet with which they emerged despite a series of late scares.

However, repeating that feat at Anfield against Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have scored 39 goals in their 18 Premier League fixtures to date, is likely to prove even more challenging.

“We know it will be tough, we know we will run a lot, but we need to be ready,” Diame said. “We’re going to start the game at 0-0 and make sure we keep our clean sheet and try to score when we get the chance because in most games, you get at least one or two chances, so we will get chances.

“We have to stay strong, stay compact and make sure we are ready for this game. They are a team which has a lot of potential up top with top players, so we need to be strong, keep the shape and keep fighting as we are doing.”

Twitter round-up

Deborah: Listening to the match in bed eating Quality Street in between sneezing and sniffling. Struck down in a matters hours with the worst cold I’ve had in years. Up the Reds!

Thomas: Very strong lineup as I predicted from Jurgen Klopp, can’t afford to be complacent against the lesser teams, we saw that bite City on the backside against Palace. Very happy to see Shaq starting.

Kris: A bit surprised to Shaqiri start with Arsenal coming up on Saturday. But I think Klopp wanted a side that could be strong enough to beat Newcastle today. That is all that matters now. Three points is what Liverpool should have in mind now.

Latest score…

14:13: Wolves have equalised at Craven Cottage, where Fulham were given the lead by Ryan Sessegnon. Off-the-bench Ivan Cavaleiro plays a ball across the box which causes carnage. Romain Saiss is there to tap in his first Premier League goal. That’s 1-1 with about seven minutes remaining.

Where’s James Milner?

14:10: I assumed that James Milner was absent because he’s taking down all of his Christmas decorations and folding away his festive jumpers…

Jurgen Klopp has shed some light on why exactly James Milner and Alberto Moreno are not included in the matchday squad.

“It’s not that serious but still serious enough to put him out of the squad today,” he said. “Millie has a little muscle problem so we couldn’t fix it quick enough, obviously, similar to Alberto Moreno [who has] some back problems.”

Ch-ch-ch-changes

14:05: Forget the “Jurgen Klopp will rest his best players” nonsense, folks. The German tactician isn’t overlooking Newcastle and names an extremely strong side.

He does make three changes with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri coming into the side with James Milner, Fabinho and Naby Keita dropping out.

And YES, Mohamed Salah starts. I’ve had fantasy football managers knocking down my door about the Egyptian!

Newcastle make six changes, with leading scorer Salomon Rondon dropped to the bench.

Yoshinori Muto, Isaac Hayden, Kenedy, Federico Fernandez, Joselu and DeAndre Yedlin start.

Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schar, Christian Atsu, Ki Sung-yueng, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon miss out.

The starting XI…

14:00: And here comes the team news!

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Shaqiri, Mane, Firmino.

Bench: Mignolet, Clyne, Keita, Fabinho, Lallana, Origi, Sturridge.

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Diame, Hayden, Kenedy, Joselu, Muto.

Bench: Woodman, Schar, Manquillo, Murphy, Longstaff, Rondon, Perez.

Twitter round-up

Karl: Wonder what sort of weird line-up we’ll see today? Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne to start at full-back? Xherdan Shaqiri in? Adam Lallana in? Maybe even Daniel Sturridge!?

Tommy: Such an important game today! Often in the past we’ve dropped points against Newcastle so let’s hope we don’t today! Need to keep that 4 point gap at the top!

Gill: Ahh Boxing Day at home nothing like a 2 day hangover just kicking in & Jurgen calling on us to create a hostile atmosphere…I’m feeling pretty hostile tbf.

Join the club, Gill!

Christmas…

13:55: How rude of me! Sorry everyone, I forgot to ask you if you enjoyed Christmas Day? I just presume you would have said yes and that you’re over the moon about the socks you’ve been bought…

As you can probably tell – I’m a bit of a Christmas scrooge. I think If I heard Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ again I’d probably explode.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and now I’m going to completely ignore the remainder of the festive period.

Afternoon

13:50: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League leaders against Newcastle at Anfield.

Sounds strange to be saying ‘Premier League leaders’ and NOT be referring to Manchester City…

I suppose everyone will get used to it soon enough with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds undefeated in the league with almost half of the season gone and looking rather formidable.

Rafa Benitez said it would be a ‘miracle’ if the Toon stayed in the Premier League this season but a shock win over his former employers, with Newcastle having lost just twice on the road this season, would be a good place to start.

Y’all ready? Ok, let’s see the team news and line-ups!

Neymar’s goal for Paris Saint-Germain against Liverpool in the pair’s Champions League clash moved him to the top of the scoring charts among Brazilians in Europe’s premier club competition.

Neymar struck in the 37th minute at the Parc des Princes after tucking home a rebound from an Edinson Cavani shot following a blistering team move involving the Brazilian and French teen sensation Kylian Mbappe.

The strike from the PSG number 10 was his 31st in the Champions League proper – taking him one ahead of retired attacking midfield great Kaka and four clear of former Barcelona star Rivaldo.

It was the Brazilian’s 10th in the competition for PSG – with the others coming for former club Barcelona.

More importantly on the night, the goal added to Juan Bernat’s opener and gave PSG a two-goal cushion as they seek to overtake Liverpool in second spot in a tight Group C.

However, Liverpool’s James Milner pulled one back for the Reds just before half-time to give them hope heading into the second half in Pairs.

‘Like a dad…RIP boss’: Mahrez dedicates Wembley goal to tragic Leicester owner https://briefnews.eu/like-a-dad-rip-boss-mahrez-dedicates-wembley-goal-to-tragic-leicester-owner/ https://briefnews.eu/like-a-dad-rip-boss-mahrez-dedicates-wembley-goal-to-tragic-leicester-owner/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 11:37:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/like-a-dad-rip-boss-mahrez-dedicates-wembley-goal-to-tragic-leicester-owner/ Riyad Mahrez has dedicated his goal in the Premier League match between Man City and Tottenham Hotspur on Monday to tragic Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a helicopter crash 24 hours prior.

READ MORE: Leicester City helicopter crash: Tributes laid as fans gather at stadium

Mahrez, 27, was named 2015/16 PFA Players’ Player of the Year when ‘The Foxes’ clinched the Premier League title in an against-all-odds fairytale rise from relegation candidates to champions in just one season.

The player, now at Man City, netted six minutes into the current champions’ match with Spurs on a torn Wembley Stadium turf on Monday, pointing to the sky in celebration of the strike.

The goal came the day after Leicester owner and chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, 61, was named among the five people killed in the crash shortly after takeoff in the car park near the club’s King Power Stadium.

Mahrez, who played despite the devastating news, admitted that it had been “difficult” after the loss of someone he labelled a father figure.

“It’s been very, very difficult for me,” Mahrez told Sky Sports. “The boss was very special to me. I spent four and a half years there and I have many memories with him.

“He was such a good person, so I’m very, very sad, and it’s why, when I scored, I put my hands in the sky for him. He did a lot for me and for Leicester. It’s difficult to speak about it because it’s so sad.

“He was like a dad for us. He was very, very special, such a good person, a very big heart. It was heartbreaking and shocking for me to have this news, of course with all the other people who died with him.

“It’s a difficult situation. I’m with Leicester and the families of the victims. I always wanted to play [on Monday] because I knew he would have wanted me to play. He was very passionate about football. It was difficult; I kept thinking about him. It was difficult to sleep as well. It’s part of life, but it’s difficult.”

City manager Pep Guardiola spoke after the game of a tough time for his charge. Mahrez’s goal earned City the three points needed to put them back on top of the Premier League on goal difference.

  • Lionel Messi has fractured his arm one week before the biggest match of FC Barcelona’s season so far.
  • The injury occured after just 17 minutes of Saturday’s La Liga game against Sevilla.
  • Messi had already provided one assist and scored one goal before he suffered a horrific fall while challenging for the ball alongside Sevilla midfielder Franco Vazquez.
  • Messi was treated by the sidelines, had his arm wrapped with a bandage, and used his shirt as a sling before he was ultimately replaced by Ousmane Dembele.
  • It has been confirmed Messi will be out of action for the upcoming El Clásico match against Real Madrid on Sunday, October 28.

Lionel Messi needed just two minutes to create a goal when FC Barcelona played Sevilla at Camp Nou on Saturday, then scored one himself 10 minutes later.

It looked like world soccer was about to get treated to yet another Messi masterclass, but the forward suffered a horrific fall in the 17th minute, badly injured his arm, and was substituted off of the field.

Sony brings its 100 percent renewable energy goal forward a decade https://briefnews.eu/sony-brings-its-100-percent-renewable-energy-goal-forward-a-decade/ https://briefnews.eu/sony-brings-its-100-percent-renewable-energy-goal-forward-a-decade/#respond Wed, 17 Oct 2018 12:23:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sony-brings-its-100-percent-renewable-energy-goal-forward-a-decade/

Just a month after Sony announced its plans to power its worldwide operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2040, the tech company has brought forward its US goal by a decade, to 2030. Sony currently sources just 25 percent of its energy in the US from renewable sources, so the decision represents an ambitious vision for the RE100 company.

However, it’s sorely needed action. Globally, the company drew on just five percent green energy in 2017, while Greenpeace’s tech report card gave Sony a very lackluster D-rating in the same year. The announcement also follows a recent damning report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned that “limiting global warming to 1.5 °C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.”

So it seems that Sony is pulling it socks up, and its US operations are now closer to falling in line with the green achievements already seen in the likes of Facebook and Google. As Sam Kimmins, head of climate group RE100 said of Sony’s announcement, “This shows the business community what can be done, and we encourage all major companies to follow suit.”

Tesla reportedly met its ambitious quarterly Model 3 production goal https://briefnews.eu/tesla-reportedly-met-its-ambitious-quarterly-model-3-production-goal/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-reportedly-met-its-ambitious-quarterly-model-3-production-goal/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 01:30:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-reportedly-met-its-ambitious-quarterly-model-3-production-goal/

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is having a lousy week, but the company might have something to crow about. A source speaking to Electrek (historically accurate with these rumors) has reported that Tesla met its lofty target of building at least 50,000 Model 3 cars over its summer quarter, producing about 51,000 examples of the ‘entry-level’ EV by September 28th. The company had been struggling with manufacturing earlier in the period, but apparently ramped back up to 5,000 Model 3s per week by the end of the quarter.

The automaker reportedly made about 77,400 EVs in total over the time span, or 6,700 in that final week.

You likely won’t get official figures from Tesla until well after the quarter ends. It may take weeks to verify these numbers. There’s no question that Tesla has been pulling out all the stops to boost production and deliveries, such as reducing color options and hand-delivering cars.

If accurate, it’ll represent a record for both Tesla and the EV industry as a whole. For context, the deliveries of popular rivals like the Chevy Bolt (roughly 2,000 per month) and Nissan Leaf (about 7,300 per month) would seem modest by comparison. Not that Tesla has much choice. The brand has to raise production levels for the Model 3 to be profitable, and the launch of the fabled $ 35,000 variant is contingent on production increases. We’d expect the firm to keep striving for larger numbers as a matter of survival, let alone for bragging rights.

FC Zurich midfielder Benjamin Kololli got more than he bargained for with his goal celebration in his team’s Europa League clash against AEK Larnaca in Cyprus, unexpectedly disappearing into a moat-like area around the pitch.

READ MORE: Ronaldo red card relief: Cristiano ‘set to be handed 1-game ban,’ freeing him up for Man Utd return

Kololli, who netted a penalty winner against the Cypriot side, rushed off towards the visitor fans section in celebration.

The 26-year-old skillfully negotiated the advertising hoardings and continued his approach to the fans, not realizing he was about to jump into a lowered area designed to prevent supporters from invading the pitch.

The midfielder disappeared from sight, prompting his worried teammates to run over to the advertising hoardings to check whether he was alright.

Several seconds later, the Kosovo international scrambled out of the moat in one piece, much to the relief of his watching teammates.

Kololli was able to continue the Group A match, which ended 1-0 to Zurich.

  • The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers played to a 21-21 tie to open the 2018 NFL season.
  • The Steelers turned the ball over six times, including one fumble with just seconds left in overtime that put the Browns in position for a potential game-winning field goal attempt.
  • The Browns’ attempt was blocked, resulting in the first Week 1 tie since 1971.

The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers played to a 21-21 tie on the first Sunday of the NFL season.

After mounting a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime, the Browns had the chance to win their first game since 2016. Both sides would trade possession in the extra period, but the Browns seemed to have caught a break after forcing a fumble from Ben Roethlisberger in Steelers territory with just seconds left.

SMART goal setting is the inverse of random or carefree goal setting without strategy.Perhaps, you’ve always wished to get back in shape but failed to act; or wished to get an annuity in place but failed to act; or wished to have control over your finances but failed to act. When you approach your goals with a carefree and nonchalant attitude you’re less likely to achieve them. You should have a strategic goal setting method in place. It ought to be a time-tested and proven one. It ought to be purposeful. Without any of these considerations in view a person is likely to continue in a vicious cycle of failed goal realization. To achieve your goals consistently and join the pack of high achievers out there who have consistently achieved much of their goals you must be prepared to do what these set of persons have been doing, and be ready to do the right thing: SMART goal setting.

What is SMART goal setting?

SMART goal setting is a goal setting method that considers certain factors about a goal relative to the person setting it. These factors are simply the five different letters in the SMART acronym. It is relative to the person setting the goal because what is true for A may not be true for B; or what is possible for A or within A’s ability to achieve may not be possible for B or within B’s ability to achieve. The acronym SMART can be broken down thus:

  • S—Specific
  • M—Measurable
  • A—Achievable
  • R—Realistic
  • T—Time bound

Is it possible that this acronym can make a long lasting impact in your life?Is it possible that a mere goal setting metric like SMART can help you achieve so many of your unfulfilled goals? Is it possible that if you practice SMART goal setting you would be able to have faster results, understand your goals better, overcome the habit of procrastination, and achieve a lot?The power to achieve your goals is in your hands. It is important to extend the enquiry by asking:

  • How many times have you said you’ll read two books every week but failed to do so?
  • How many times have you said you’ll cut down on your expenses so you can save enough money to make a down payment for that apartment building you said you’ll buy five years ago but failed to do so?
  • How many times have you failed to keep to your diet routine even after all the tears you shed realising you keep adding pound upon pound every day?

We all have goals and we all have twenty four hours at our disposal and no one has more or less of it. While some people find it easy to achieve their goals without procrastinating. some find it difficult doing so.For some people who have succeeded again and again in achieving their goals they have simply found out an easy way of doing this. Is there something they know that you don’t?

How SMART goals make a lasting impact in your life

Through SMART goal setting, Stephen Cooley was able to grow his real estate business to the point of closing at $ 110 million in sales when the average price point of homes was between $ 100, 000 – $ 200, 000 in South Carolina.((BoomTown: Don’t Believe in Goal Setting? Then Listen to Stephen Cooley’s Team))Through SMART goal setting Steve Jobs was able to improve the fortunes of Apple and prevent the company from going bankrupt even when it had barely 90 days left before being declared bankrupt.SMART goals setting can make a lasting impact in your life:

1. Make your goal clearer

When you use SMART goal setting it is easier for you to understand the various phases of your goal.By using SMART you’re able to ask yourself relevant questions pertaining to your goal.

2. Motivate you into acting on your goals

When you use SMART goal setting and break down the goal into smaller goals or milestones, the bigger goal no longer looks intimidating or impossible.Jack Canfield, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul wrote in his book How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be about how they applied the rule of five in marketing their book, Chicken Soup and were able to make the book a best seller after some months. The rule of five simply means doing five specific things every day that will move you closer to achieving your goal.In order not to be overwhelmed too, you would have to measure your performance using the right metrics. Here we are considering the Measurable and Achievable aspects of the SMART acronym. It is critical that you measure yourself in terms of lead measures. What are lead measures? They are the things you do that leads you closer to your goals. On the other hand you would have to avoid “lag measures.”While lag measures mean a successful outcome that you wished for and got, they can be emotionally draining and deceitful because whenever they don’t happen, you can become discouraged and so leg measures do not necessarily mean that you are getting closer to your bigger goal.So it is better to stick to lead measures.

3. Help you save you time

You can achieve more when you’re strategic with your goal setting task.To be strategic, your goal would have to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time framed. If you can’t identify any of these points in your goal, you probably will be wasting your time on a wild goose chase. When your goals are written down, it’s easier for you to go into action mode.

4. Improve your self-discipline

Self improvement is an important thing for everyone to do periodically. When you set SMART goals, it makes you realize that you have to sit up and work on achieving them.

How to set a SMART goal

To make your SMART goal works, follow the following tips:

Specific

Every goal ought to be specific. It is important to guard against making vague goals because even when they are achieved you may not know. This is because you weren’t specific enough. For instance “I will start planning toward retirement” is vague. Rather than write that you could say, “I will start planning toward retirement by starting an annuity plan.” This is more specific. So when you are specific on your goal it’s easier for you to identify all its components and work accordingly toward achieving it.

Measurable

Your goals must be measurable. When they are measurable, it’s easier for you to follow through.A goal like this is not measurable, “I want to make millions of Dollars.” You can make it more measurable by saying, “I want to make one million Dollars selling one hundred thousand copies of my book at ten Dollars each.”Also, using our example while explaining the Specific acronym, you can make the goal more measurable by saying, “I will start planning toward retirement by starting an annuity plan and saving $ 500 every month.”

Achievable

How realistic or actionable is your goal? Is it practical enough to fit into a given time frame? Is it something you are able to achieve in your capacity?A man would only be setting himself up for failure if he sets goals that are not reasonable.A goal like this is highly unrealistic and therefore not achievable: “I want to be the Governor of Texas in six months” meanwhile the elections will be coming up in the next three years.Goals must be written down relative to the experiences of the one setting them. They must resonate with you. It is important that you have at least some of the resources needed to actualise this goal.It is also important that you consider your time frame. When the time frame to achieve a complex goal is too short it is rare that such goal will be actualised. Thus, using our previous example if you write “I want to make one million Dollars in ten days selling one hundred thousand copies of my book at ten Dollars each,” you would only be setting up yourself for failure. This is especially true if you’re not a popular author or if you’ve never sold even up to one thousand copies of any of your previous books whether e-copy or in print.

Realistic

Before you proceed to making the commitment toward that goal you need think about how realistic it is.Being realistic means you should be willing to make all the commitments required for that goal to be achieved.

Time framed

Every goal must have a commencement date and an end date written down. It is also important that you break down your goals into phases, chunks, bits, or milestones. The act of having deadlines set to your goals is ample motivation that drives you into action. Without a deadline, it is not possible for you to know if you’re making headway with your goals.“I will start planning toward retirement by starting an annuity plan and saving $ 500 every month for the next twenty five years” is a time framed goal.Remember that some goals are short term while some are long term. It is important to always bear this in mind because this will help you in making a clearer and realistic strategy for your SMART goal setting.Without SMART goal setting in view, much of our goals may likely end in our minds or on paper or just midway into implementation. SMART goal setting reveals to us all the action points of our goals and helps us to have an awareness of every aspect of our goals.

Over to you: Time for you to act now

I could go on and on. What matters at the end of the day is what you do with the contents of this article because the power to achieve your goals is in your hands. It is not enough having a goal. It is not enough putting it down in writing. It is important having a strategy in mind while putting it down. This strategy is a guideline or set of rules that guide you. It is SMART goal setting in the given circumstance. After writing down your goals you would have to be ready to take action. There should be a clear action point. Write down what you need to do on daily, weekly, or monthly basis. As a matter of practice, it is important that you begin by putting down a single statement that captures best your goal. For instance, “I want to own a $ 200, 000 worth duplex by 1st of August, 2019.”Now, you can break this goal into smaller goals by saving $ 17, 000 per month for the next twelve months. You would have to ask yourself if this $ 17, 000 is within your reach on a monthly basis. If you make up to $ 25, 000 per month and you spend $ 5000 for monthly upkeep then it is possible setting aside $ 17, 000 every month for this purchase. When your goals are realistic, they make them worth the chase. One of the things to bear in mind is that in order not to be overwhelmed by the daunting nature of your goals remember to always break them into milestones, chunks, or bits. In fact, take one day at a time.Do not bother yourself with the one year, three year, five year or ten year plan as this may likely overwhelm you with fear and doubt. Let your focus be on each day. What will I be doing today? Consider this and go for it.
