GM’s Maven program will rent Teslas and Fords in 2019 https://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-program-will-rent-teslas-and-fords-in-2019/ https://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-program-will-rent-teslas-and-fords-in-2019/#respond Tue, 13 Nov 2018 09:28:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-program-will-rent-teslas-and-fords-in-2019/

Earlier this year, GM officially launched a program called Maven that gives people a way to earn extra money by renting out their cars. It’s only open to Chevrolet-, Buick-, GMC- and Cadillac-branded vehicles, though — in other words, cars from GM’s auto brands. According to TechCrunch, though, the automaker plans to expand the peer-to-peer car-sharing program’s reach and open it to vehicles from its competitors. GM Urban Mobility and Maven VP Julia Steyn has announced at the UBS Global Technology Conference that Maven will start accepting rival vehicles to the platform by mid-2019.

It’s not entirely clear if Maven will welcome cars from all automakers, but it sounds like at least some Ford and Tesla models will be. In addition, GM will open the platform up to micro-fleet entrepreneurs and will also expand it to Canada and other international markets. By doing all those, the company is hoping to make Maven much bigger than it is today, with a lot more and diverse vehicles on offer. Steyn said: “If, at some point, there’s a UFO that you want shared and you want to be on the platform and it’s going to do a job for somebody, we’ll be able to put it on the platform.”

–

Legendary car designer Harley J. Earl led a charmed life. A Stanford dropout, Earl was famously discovered by a Cadillac executive while working with his father in the family’s coachwork shop building custom vehicles for the Hollywood elite. The first president of design at General Motors, Earl accomplished many things: the Buick Y-Job, the introduction of tailfins, and shepherding the Corvette into existence, just to name a few highlights. But it’s his styling contributions to the Firebird I prototype—GM’s aircraft-inspired single-seat, gas-turbine-powered research vehicle—that will forever link his design legacy with NASCAR’s “Great American Race,” the Daytona 500.

–

He was a close associate of NASCAR founding father Bill France Sr. At some point in the mid-1950s, Earl commissioned a 24-inch-long replica of the Firebird I prototype car and presented it to NASCAR for use as a trophy. In honor of and out of respect for Earl’s contributions to the advancement of the automobile, France designated it the Harley J. Earl Perpetual Trophy and named him commissioner of NASCAR in 1960. As with the Indianapolis 500’s Borg-Warner Trophy, the intention is for the name of each year’s race winner to be affixed to its base in perpetuity.

–

–

Although the exact sequence of events is imprecise, photographic evidence confirms that the trophy predates the inaugural 1959 Daytona 500 by at least two years. It was awarded to Cotton Owens for winning the 1957 Grand National race on the Daytona Beach and Road Course; the photo above clearly shows the full-size Firebird trophy being ceremonially presented to Owens—with Earl, France, and General Motors’ Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen and Ray Nichels along for good measure. (Owens was driving for Pontiac at the time, which explains the presence of the Pontiac execs.) At that point, the trophy was mounted to a simple decorative base but still weighed reportedly in excess of 100 pounds. From there, the trophy only made cameo appearances in Daytona 500 winner’s-circle photographs, including with Junior Johnson in 1960, Tiny Lund in 1963, and Richard Petty in 1964, all images that are included in our photo gallery. After that, it seems to disappear from post-race celebrations, its presence eventually superseded by the Harley J. Earl “Award,” a more traditional—and likely easier to transport—trophy that stands approximately three feet high and has silver figurines on a wooden base.

–

As NASCAR’s popularity skyrocketed in the 1990s and the organization looked inward to mine its own legacy, the decision was made, not only to return the Harley J. Earl trophy to the winner’s circle but also to create smaller replicas that drivers could take home to add to their hardware collections. In the ensuing years, the “real” trophy has been mounted to a new base standing about four feet tall and five feet wide, crafted in the tri-oval shape of Daytona International Speedway. The massive trophy is kept on display at the Daytona 500 Experience museum near the Speedway but makes an annual appearance in victory lane with the winner of the Daytona 500.

–

To create the miniature replicas that NASCAR started awarding the race winners in 1998, the sanctioning body turned to Nebraska sculptor and NASCAR fan John Lajba. Handcrafted in bronze and sent out for plating before being returned for polishing, each miniature Firebird I replica requires at least six weeks of work to complete. The tri-oval base also mimics that of the official trophy but is made of Lucite. Although only 22 inches long overall, each replica and its base weigh in at 54 pounds. Lajba says the design has evolved a little over the years, enabled in part by sticking to his one-per-year production schedule.

For additional evidence of NASCAR’s and Daytona’s dedication to the legacy of Earl’s Firebird I, look no further than the infield grass, which was cultivated in the image of the car for the 2018 Daytona 500. The iconic Firebird I profile was selected by fans via a contest on social media over two other design contenders.

–

–

As for the original 1953 XP-21 Firebird I, the actual prototype? GM is still in possession of the fiberglass-bodied vehicle, its care entrusted to GM’s Heritage Center. For the 2018 running of the Daytona 500—the event’s 60th—General Motors shipped the original Firebird I concept to Florida, where it was on prominent display at the Chevrolet Daytona Experience near the track’s pit lane. We photographed the dazzling, decades-old jet-age concept car extensively, and General Motors even brought it out onto the track on Friday night for a photo shoot under the lights.

–

As the first gas-turbine vehicle ever to have been built and tested in the United States, Firebird I’s significance, thankfully, was not lost on GM—or on the Daytona 500.

GM’s Maven Extends Its “You Don’t Need a Car” Message to Canada https://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-extends-its-you-dont-need-a-car-message-to-canada/ https://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-extends-its-you-dont-need-a-car-message-to-canada/#respond Fri, 16 Feb 2018 14:02:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gms-maven-extends-its-you-dont-need-a-car-message-to-canada/ GM-Maven-1

The way automakers earn the bulk of their revenue has remained the same for more than a century: Customers step into dealerships once every few years and buy a new car. Now that automakers are branching into offering mobility services, however, the companies realize that their business model needs to be reconfigured to chase fickle consumers who, rather than signing new purchase or lease agreements every few years, are able to choose among various transportation options every single day.

–

“All that has to happen tomorrow morning is that people wake up and don’t come,” said  Rachel Bhattacharya, chief growth officer at Maven, the car-sharing brand that’s one of General Motors’ principal players in the new mobility realm. “That’s all that has to happen, and the company is dead. When you are in the services business, it’s a completely different animal. Every day, someone has to wake up and choose you. You live and die by that.”

–

One way Maven strives to keep customers in its vehicles is by having cars available in as many markets as are profitable. To that end, the car-sharing brand launched service in Toronto early in February, opening its first location outside the United States. At the outset, Maven will have 40 vehicles available in the city, some of which start at hourly rates as low as the equivalent of U.S. $ 7.25.

–

One way that Maven differentiates itself from competitors such as Zipcar is by offering a portfolio of vehicles that range in size from the subcompact Chevrolet Spark to the Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV. Customers can tailor the vehicle they borrow to the outing they’re undertaking.

–

–

With Toronto operational, Maven has spread to 16 markets across North America. Since its inception in January 2016, the brand has served some 114,000 customers, who have driven a collective 243 million miles. Those numbers are a microscopic sliver of the miles compiled on personally owned GM vehicles, but the company’s aggressive promotion and prioritizing of Maven shows a readiness to prepare for a future that will be less reliant on ownership.

–

General Motors says that each shared car removes approximately 10 private cars from the road, and that’s consistent with findings from a 2016 study conducted by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley. Their study of the effects of Car2Go, the world’s largest car-sharing company, found that members sold between one and three personal vehicles for each one available in the company’s fleet. Further, they said, between four and nine new-vehicle acquisitions were suppressed. Overall, that meant between seven and 11 vehicles were removed from the road across the study cities for each car-sharing vehicle available.

Subverting new-car sales may have once been heresy at a company like General Motors, but in a press release announcing the Toronto expansion, GM makes a bold statement: “Thanks to Maven, car ownership in Toronto is no longer necessary.”

–

By strategically choosing to locate near other transportation options, such as bus depots and train stations, Maven says its service functions as one cog among multiple options and that, by maintaining careful oversight of its fleet, it can attract customers.

–

“We have more points of control over our business. We control fleet size, fleet composition, and where it’s parked, and that gives us a lot more ability to influence that customer experience than, I think, a pure platform company would have,” Bhattacharya said. “There are actually advantages to owning and deploying your own fleet and making those decisions on your own.”

–

GM-Maven-3

–

If Toronto helps GM further its car-sharing aims, then Maven’s arrival furthers Toronto’s efforts to cast itself as a city eager to experiment with mobility options.

–

Google’s Sidewalks Labs subsidiary has announced plans to transform a section of Toronto’s waterfront into a hub for urban innovation that includes “a mobility system that is safer and more convenient than the private car at much lower cost.” The city is also one of 20 finalists in the race to land Amazon’s second headquarters and the only one located outside the United States. In its request for proposals, Amazon noted that factors in its decision would include traffic congestion and the ability to offer a range of transportation options.

–

Even as Toronto touts visions of a better transportation future, it is grappling with some of the realities today. Start with the finite number of parking spaces for both car-sharing vehicles and privately owned ones. In January, city council members expressed concern that a Car2Go pilot project would take away too many parking spots in Toronto’s residential areas and balked at issuing the necessary permits to the company, which is a subsidiary of Daimler. In turn, Car2Go has been so incensed by the holdup that it has threatened to stop operating in Toronto, according to a CBC news report.

–

–

There’s an important difference in the ways that Maven and Car2Go function. Maven contracts for dedicated parking spots in both public and private garages and lots, whereas Car2Go relies on a “free floating” business model in which customers can park the cars anywhere on public streets within designated zones; they don’t need to be returned to a base location.

–

But the broader implications of the parking squabble in Toronto remain thorny for car-sharing operations. While government clamors about the perils of a car-centric culture, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and offer more mobility choices, in practice the city council’s reluctance here delivers a mixed message. If one thing is clear, it’s that car companies like Daimler and General Motors, through their car-sharing brands, are willing to shed the traditions and revenues associated with private car ownership and forge a new path.
