A recent phishing campaign targeting US government officials, activists, and journalists is notable for using a technique that allowed the attackers to bypass two-factor authentication protections offered by services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail, researchers said Thursday. The event underscores the risks of 2fa that relies on one-tap logins or one-time passwords, particularly if the latter are sent in SMS messages to phones.
Attackers working on behalf of the Iranian government collected detailed information on targets and used that knowledge to write spear-phishing emails that were tailored to the targets’ level of operational security, researchers with security firm Certfa Lab said in a blog post. The emails contained a hidden image that alerted the attackers in real time when targets viewed the messages. When targets entered passwords into a fake Gmail or Yahoo security page, the attackers would almost simultaneously enter the credentials into a real login page. In the event targets’ accounts were protected by 2fa, the attackers redirected targets to a new page that requested a one-time password.
“In other words, they check victims’ usernames and passwords in realtime on their own servers, and even if 2 factor authentication such as text message, authenticator app or one-tap login are enabled they can trick targets and steal that information too,” Certfa Lab researchers wrote.

Offline access to our Gmail is a feature that has come, gone and changed before, and 2018 will be no different. While Google’s announcement Wednesday that it will pull the plug on Inbox got a lot of the attention, it also revealed that the old Gmail Offline Chrome app would be pulled after December 3rd.
For an alternative, Google has prepared a native offline experience in its recent redesign of Gmail that syncs up to 90 days of emails and keeps everything listed in the same familiar interface. That means if you want offline access (useful for flights or other locations that combine dodgy WiFi with a possible need to pull up old messages) you will have to switch to the new experience — we hope you like it.

After Google axed its development of Gears (remember Google Gears?) in 2009, the Chrome app (above) arrived in 2011, bringing HTML5-powered access alongside an update to its still-brand-new Chrome OS platform. But as the years have rolled on, browser technology and security have progressed, so now Progressive Web Apps are the technology underpinning offline Gmail support in Chrome 61 or higher. Other than switching to the new experience, users will need to enable offline access in their settings, and if you have a school or work account, your G Suite admin may need to allow it as well.

Google Gmail has claimed dominance over the email industry by attracting more than a billion people worldwide.
The search engine giants recently rolled out a new update for Gmail to make managing your inbox easier and faster.
This update also stretches over to Gmail’s mobile app, where you can now disable Conversation View from your emails.
Express.co.uk explains how you can turn off Conversation View from your Gmail mobile app here.
Conversation View is Gmail’s grouping tool.
The feature allows users to set whether emails of the same subject are grouped together for easier inbox management.
This will chunk together emails into one long thread – or conversation – to make it easier to track what is being said and reduce the size of an inbox that has multiple emails in the conversation.
By default, Conversation View is always turned on in Google Mail.
Google has previously allowed users to switch Conversation View off on the web desk version but the next update also allows users to disable the feature on mobile too.
Google said: “In Gmail, replies to emails are grouped together as ‘conversations,’ to make them easier to digest and follow.
“Some users, however, prefer to see each of their emails listed individually in their inbox.”
To turn off this feature, open up your Gmail mobile app.
Tap on the Menu button in the top right and select settings.
In the General Settings tab, find Conversation View and uncheck the box.
This will disable Conversation View and relieve the clutter in your inbox.
Gmail has a new look for a number of features users already have access too, plus a raft of new ways to organise your inbox and take action on emails.
The latest update includes the following options:
On your computer or laptop, go to the main Gmail homepage.
In the top right, click Settings and then select the option called Try the new Gmail.
If you change your mind, you can click Settings and then Go back to classic Gmail.

Gmail will be getting a brand new update next month, as Google roll out a bunch of new features.
The new version of Gmail is scheduled to release next month, though no official date has been announced by Google.
The new update will include features like message snoozing, attachment previews, offline support, confidential messaging and a bunch more.
The new Gmail update will change your account from next month – here’s how.
Among a whole host of new features, Google will also be changing the Gmail layout in the upcoming update.
The layout is currently available to Early Adopter’s but all G Suite users will be able to use it next month.
Google announced a bunch of new helpful features to the layout in a blog post on their website.
From the start of July, G Suite Admins can transition all Gmail accounts to the new Gmail, letting companies bring all their staff over to the new update straight away.
Users can opt in or out for 12 weeks after that before they are automatically switched.
The confidential mode will allow users to set an expiration date for sensitive emails on their Gmail, sending recipients a link to content rather than the full email to make sure it can be safely deleted.
Email Snoozing will be available on Gmail next month, as well as nudging, which resurfaces emails that require a response or action from the user.
The new feature can be helpful to keep track of emails that are important to you and place them back to the top of your inbox for you to deal with.
You can also preview any new attachments in an email, hovering the mouse over the attachment to open a small box of the content without fully opening it.
Among other visual addition an additional, collapsable side-panel has been added to the right-hand screen of Gmail, integrating Google’ G Suite apps in one handy taskbar.
This can house Google Calendar, Google Keep and Google Tasks all in an easily-accessed bar. Alongside this, a Google Tasks mobile app has been launched on iOS and Android to help you keep track of notes and emails.
Google has also added an offline mode, letting users access, queue up and read emails offline, without access to an internet connection.
This addition is helpful to people who travel frequently and need to access and send messages for when thy next hit a connection.
The new Gmail update will roll out next month.
As promised, Google has rolled out new key features for Gmail. Native offline mail support is now available after it was promised as a follow-up to the major redesign that launched late last month. You have to be using Chrome as your Web browser to access this feature, though.
Additionally, Google has launched Smart Compose. This feature was unveiled at Google I/O last week. It’s a predictive text feature, but it goes beyond the word-completion and autocorrect features we normally see by suggesting complete sentences for your emails based on AI analysis of your emails’ text.
This is the first time Gmail has supported offline use without additional software or extensions. Google previously offered offline email through Google Gears in ages past as well as a Chrome extension. Now it’s baked right into Gmail natively, so Google is encouraging users to uninstall the old extension in favor of this feature.

Google has given Drive a surprise makeover with elements that make it look more like the new Gmail. The redesign doesn’t come with new features, but when you get it, you’ll notice that The Big G has changed the Drive interface background from gray to white for a cleaner look. Its boxes and icons now also have much rounded corners and look a bit taller than before, and Drive’s logo now has a more prominent place on the top left corner of the interface. You’ll also find that Google has shuffled Drive’s icons around, with the Settings and Help Center icons now in the same line as the search bar.

If you don’t see the new elements yet, you’ll likely have to wait a bit before they reach your account. Google has already started rolling out the new design, but it’ll take up to three day before everyone gets it.

Gmail on your iPhone can now help you settle a tab with a friend. A quiet update to the iOS app has introduced the ability to send and receive money using Google Pay. As on Android devices, Gmail sends the payment as an attachment — the recipient only needs an email address to receive their money. The feature might not be as simple on iOS given that you need to download an app to use it, but it’s easier than some third-party apps and more widely available than Apple Pay Cash.
The upgraded client adds another handy existing feature: the ability to snooze emails. If there’s a message you’d rather deal with in the future, you just have to hit a snooze button to take a break. It remains dangerous (it’s all too tempting to punt important messages until it’s too late), but it could be crucial if you’re nowhere near inbox zero and have more pressing emails vying for your attention.

After weeks of rumours and much speculation, Google has finally released its Gmail update.
This huge upgrade not only brings a less cluttered look to the popular email service but also a swathe of new and very useful features.
Google is trying hard to help its users cope with the barrage of daily emails and there’s plenty of neat tricks to make sure an important message never gets forgotten again.
With over one billion Gmail users across the world this new rollout is going to staggered over the coming weeks so you won’t automatically see the changes.
In fact, Google says it may take a few months before everyone is switched over to its all-new Gmail service.
However, there is a neat little trick which allows you to get the update right now.
To test out the new all-new Gmail simply open your current inbox in a web browser and go to Settings in the top right and select “Try the new Gmail”.
This will switch you from the old version to this new upgrade.
Once that’s done you’ll be good to go with Google’s new email and here’s the best five features you need to try.
1. CONFIDENTIAL MODE KEEPS THINGS SAFE
There’s a new way to keep emails safe in Gmail with the launch of Confidential Mode.
This new feature allows the sender to have total control over what happens to a message once it lands in a recipient’s inbox.
Confidential Mode can block an email from being forwarded to anyone else and will stop anyone printing or downloading its content.
Another nice extra is setting authentications.
This means an email can’t be opened without a unique text message being received and opened as well.
2. GET A NUDGE
We’ve all had emails getting lost amongst the daily spam from pizza restaurants and insurance companies.
But the new Gmail will try and help users manage their inbox better with something Google calls Nudge.
Using some clever AI, Gmail can now work out if an important message may have been missed.
It will then give users a little nudge to respond and will even move the email to a more prominent position as a reminder that it needs some attention.
3. DON’T CLICK ON THAT SPAM
Spam and phishing emails are the curse of owning an inbox but things are changing in the new Gmail.
Google can now instantly warn users if it suspects an email is from a fraudulent source.
Not only are these big red alerts much more prominent but they will also give clear instructions to the user about what might be hidden inside.
This should keep people far safer online and help avoid downloading or viewing dangerous content.
4. SPAM..SPAM..SPAM
Speaking of spam there’s another reason why Gmail is improving the overall experience.
No matter how careful you’ve been avoided ticking that “I don’t want marketing emails” box, many still seem to slip through the net.
Clever companies then make it hard to unsubscribe to this spam by hiding the option in tiny text at the bottom of message.
Thankfully, there’s now a much faster way to rid your inbox of these irritating messages.
Using artificial intelligence, unsubscribe suggestions appear based on cues like how many emails you get from a sender and how many of them you actually read.
One tap and you’ll never get an email from that company again.
5. NEVER MISS A VITAL EMAIL AGAIN
Gmail will end the nightmare of missing a vital message with the launch of High-priority notifications.
This new setting means you only get notified when something important drops into your inbox, cutting down on alerts and keeping interruptions to a minimum.
