The Anthem VIP demo didn’t exactly launch according to plan between flaky connections and neverending loads, assuming you can even log in. However, BioWare has at least heard players’ cries. In an update, the studio’s Chad Robertson said the company was addressing the chronic issues with this first wave of public previews. It’s continuing to “apply fixes” to connection problems (some of which might wait for the open demo), and believes it has addressed most issues where a “specific combination” of pre-order perks and demo access prevented people from getting in. Robertson warned that it was “difficult” to resolve the infinite loading screen issue and that it might not be fixed before the VIP weekend was over.

To compensate for the problems, BioWare is providing an extra vinyl (read: character skin) to everyone who played the VIP demo.

While this hints that the open demo the following weekend might not be as rocky, it’s still a rough start for BioWare’s first foray into Destiny-style shared-world action games. And a lot is riding on Anthem‘s success. When additional titles like the next Dragon Age are still a long way off, BioWare will heavily depend on Anthem for some time to come.

Despite the Glitches, Shoppers Can’t Quit Amazon https://briefnews.eu/despite-the-glitches-shoppers-cant-quit-amazon/ https://briefnews.eu/despite-the-glitches-shoppers-cant-quit-amazon/#respond Tue, 17 Jul 2018 18:32:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/despite-the-glitches-shoppers-cant-quit-amazon/ The promotions started more than a week ahead of time: Amazon, the world’s biggest e-commerce site, was launching its annual Prime Day on July 16, with 30 hours of deals online and in Whole Foods markets. The company issued five press releases promoting Prime Day, during which shoppers who pay $ 119 for a yearly Prime membership are offered flash sales and discounts on various products. Consumers gleefully prepared for deals, and competitors planned their own sales to lure in buyers, with Target, eBay, and Macy’s launching their own events.

And then, at noon Eastern Time on Monday, as Prime members sat down at their computers and tried to shop, the site failed. Shoppers were redirected to pictures of dogs, with captions like “Sorry. Something went wrong on our end. Please go back and try again.” The hashtags #PrimeDayFail and #DogsOfAmazon started trending on Twitter. Other retailers tried to lure away customers. Office Depot, for example, sent out an email, “Tired of looking at dogs? Our deals are still up.”

Yet customers still kept trying on Amazon. Amanda Taylor, a blogger and mother of two who lives in St. Louis, sat down when Prime Day started and tried to buy an Air Fryer. By the time she got through, the item was sold out. She estimates the site failed 50 separate times—that’s 50 pictures of dogs—as she tried to shop throughout the day. “It was such a frustrating day yesterday,” she told me. She eventually ended up buying school supplies for her kids, some discounted sandals, and Star Wars salt and pepper shakers—on sale for $ 11.99, a 70 percent sale.

Although Taylor was frustrated, she didn’t try to shop on other sites, even though there were deals, and didn’t really think about giving up, she told me. As a Prime member, Amazon is just more convenient than other sites: It guarantees free shipping on many items, whereas other sites often only offer free shipping on orders of $ 35 or more. “It’s just the free shipping and convenience, instead of fighting people up in the department store, I can go there and it comes right to my door,” she said. This despite the fact that, as an affiliate marketer, Taylor was losing money every time someone clicked a link on her blog, tried to buy a product, and then couldn’t complete the sale.

Amazon was caught flat-footed by the site’s failure on Prime Day, and it’s surprising that a company that talked up the promotion for days ahead of time was so unprepared, especially a company that is growing a large part of its business based on selling cloud computing through Amazon Web Services. But if Amazon learned anything from its Prime Day experience, it’s probably that people will keep shopping on the site, no matter how much it fails. The Prime Day failures, rather than highlighting an opening for other retailers, suggest that Amazon’s competitors are going to have a very hard time breaking the its hold on retail, where it accounts for nearly half of all e-commerce sales in the U.S.

“I would view this as negligible,” says Daniel Ives, the chief strategy office and head of technology research at GBH Insights in New York, about the glitches. GBH estimated, before Prime Day, that Amazon would generate $ 3.6 billion in sales on Prime Day, up from $ 2.4 billion last year, when the event was six hours shorter. Ives still thinks Amazon is on track to hit those numbers, despite the glitches.

Amazon also uses Prime Day to sign up new Prime members, hoping to get more people to shell out $ 119 a year for the club, up from $ 99. The company surprised analysts earlier this year by revealing it had 100 million Prime members globally. Ives said he thinks Prime membership will grow a further 25 percent in the next 18 months, helped in part by the Prime Day push. “This was another shot in the arm for Prime Day signups,” he said.

Amazon said in a release that Prime Day sales were higher than ever. Though it did not provide numbers, estimates by Feedvisor, an intelligence platform for online retailers, suggested that orders on Amazon Marketplace were up 69 percent from a year ago. Rather than providing specific numbers about sales, or explaining why the site had crashed, Amazon downplayed the problems with dog puns: “It wasn’t all a walk in the (dog) park, we had a ruff start—we know some customers were temporarily unable to make purchases. We still have hundreds of thousands of new deals today.”

Amazon’s website wasn’t the only part of the company experiencing difficulties on Monday. Some drivers for Amazon Flex, the delivery service that lets workers deliver packages from their cars, weren’t able to access the app. Businesses whose sites rely on on Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing platform that hosts Amazon’s website and thousands of others, reported problems. And some consumers said they had issues with Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant. Some Amazon employees also used Prime Day to protest Amazon’s low wages and what the employees believe to be a harsh workplace culture; workers went on strike in Spain as Bernie Sanders held a town hall featuring Amazon and other workers and the hashtag #CEOsVSWorkers.

The glitches were likely caused by Amazon Web Services, which has provided a growing portion of the company’s revenues by signing up new customers; cloud revenue jumped 45 percent in the fourth quarter of last year. Companies use AWS to develop artificial-intelligence and machine-learning applications, which heavily tax the system. Josh Olson, an analyst at Edward Jones Research, speculated that AWS was not prepared to handle that increased capacity alongside millions of shoppers logging on to Amazon. “If you’re getting to where you already have the most compute power in the world, and it’s still not enough to handle the demand, that’s surprising,” he said. Yet he, like Ives, sees this as a mere hiccup for Amazon, and a lesson for Amazon that it needs to build out its computing power.

The glitch came a day after Goldman Sachs reported that Microsoft’s Azure, a cloud provider that competes with AWS, is gaining on Amazon. It’s possible that the Prime Day glitches may send more companies to Azure over AWS, which could be a bigger blow to Amazon than some frustrated shoppers. Yet Ives, the analyst, suggested that it would take more than a few glitches to get companies to change their cloud strategy.

Juozas Kaziukenas, the founder of Marketplace Pulse, which researches selling trends, told me that despite the Prime Day glitches, sales were up 50 percent over the average day for some Amazon sellers. Amazon sells about $ 1.5 million a minute on Prime Day, he said. “Despite the website suffering outages, customers were willing to try again and again,” he said.

Colin Ganley, the owner of Twin Engine Coffee, which exports coffee from Nicaragua and sells on Prime, said that Monday was about triple a normal day for his sales on Amazon. He also bought ads on Amazon to direct people to his product, and impressions were up about 30 percent. This is Twin Engine’s first year on Prime, but, he said, it’s been worth it so far, because Prime customers only seem to shop on Amazon. “The Prime customer is this super loyal Amazon buyer, and if we’re not there, they’re not going to buy it,” he said.

People are using glitches in Super Mario Odyssey’s Balloon World https://briefnews.eu/people-are-using-glitches-in-super-mario-odysseys-balloon-world/ https://briefnews.eu/people-are-using-glitches-in-super-mario-odysseys-balloon-world/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 23:24:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/people-are-using-glitches-in-super-mario-odysseys-balloon-world/

Nintendo updated Super Mario Odyssey with new, free content yesterday. This introduced the Balloon World online mode that enables players to have fun with an asynchronous hide-and-seek mode. Players can either hide a balloon and earn coins as other players take turns failing to retrieve it, or they can try to find other players’ balloons before the timer runs out.

This is a fun end-game mode that enables players to use their knowledge of the level maps and how to control Mario to earn a lot of extra coins. You can then use that in-game currency to unlock new costumes or moons. But this mode has also exposed some of Super Mario Odyssey’s seams because players are using glitches to hide balloons out-of-bounds.

For example, here is one in the Mushroom Kingdom level:

Other players have noticed balloons hidden in this wall, and they are talking about it on Super Mario Odyssey forums.

To get this balloon, you’d have to empty out the pond by pulling the four stoppers, and then you’d have to perform some precise movements with Mario to get him to slide through the geometry. For this wall, you’d need to ground pound into a roll toward the wall. As Mario first touches the wall, you need to press Y and B at the same time to throw your hat and to exit the roll simultaneously. This should put Mario inside of the wall.

That’s not impossible to do, but this favors the hider. If you are seeking, you have to wager your coins. So you could easily run out of money before you succeed at this challenge. The hider doesn’t have to risk anything, and they can try as many times as they want without losing any coins. And the more people who fail at your balloon, the more coins you get — so the game encourages this kind of cheating.

Finally, when you go to seek balloons, the highest-risk/highest-reward missions are these kinds of nearly impossible balloons. But you can’t see if they are using a glitch or not until after you pay. And even then, you may have to pay a couple of times to understand that a particular balloon is impossible unless you understand how the glitches work.

Thankfully, this is just a distraction, but I hope Nintendo addresses this mode — because it’s one that I want to use to earn the coins I need to get to 999 moons and 100-percent the game.

$12bn Berlin-Munich high-speed train plagued by glitches, cancellations in 1st week https://briefnews.eu/12bn-berlin-munich-high-speed-train-plagued-by-glitches-cancellations-in-1st-week/ https://briefnews.eu/12bn-berlin-munich-high-speed-train-plagued-by-glitches-cancellations-in-1st-week/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2017 01:21:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/12bn-berlin-munich-high-speed-train-plagued-by-glitches-cancellations-in-1st-week/

Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed rail line between Berlin and Munich has been plagued with delays, breakdowns and cancellations since it went into operation Sunday, amid allegations that the German rail operator was ill-prepared for the launch.

The express line, designed to cut travel time between Germany’s two most important cities from six to four hours, was launched Sunday. ICE Sprinter trains, expected to be racing at speeds of up to 300 km/h (185 mph) on the new line, cost nearly €10 billion ($ 12 billion) to build. Deutsche Bahn expects 3.6 million passengers annually on the new service.

The highly-awaited opening of the high-speed line was marred by several technical problems. One train traveling from Munich to Berlin was delayed in Nuremberg for 20 minutes on Sunday, and then needed to be diverted to a slower track, in order not to delay the high-speed train on the new track behind it. The train eventually arrived in Berlin two hours late.

On Monday morning, a train scheduled to set off from Berlin to Munich at 7:38 am was canceled due to “technical problems.” On Tuesday morning, a high-speed train traveling between Berlin and Munich was also canceled, reportedly due to technical problems.

“We are still waiting for clarification of the exact reasons for the breakdowns,” the head of the trade union GDL (Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivfuhrer) told Zeit.

GDL, which represents train drivers, said state-owned Deutsche Bahn (DB) was inadequately prepared for the launch of the new high-speed route. “Our train drivers are doing their best… but they haven’t had a trial run,” GDL chairman Claus Weselsky said Wednesday, as cited by Abendblatt.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has dismissed Weselsky’s claims. “Our locomotive drivers have been well trained,” a DB spokesman said. “The technical issues have been thoroughly analyzed, and largely eliminated during hundreds of trial runs before the line went into operation.”

However, industry watchers have been surprised that no credible explanation for the series of breakdowns and mishaps has been provided.

“I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a reasonable explanation [for the Deutsche Bahn breakdowns],” Christian Bottger, professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, told Tagesspiegel on Tuesday. “Long-distance rail routes have not been well managed for years,” he added.

Bottger said there could be a variety of reasons to blame, including thin resources, unclear responsibilities within DB’s management, as well as the company’s penchant to hire too many consultants.

Travelers should expect possible “cancellations or delays” along the high-speed route in the next few days, Suddeutsche Zeitung reported.

Android Wear updates leave glitches with Assistant and reminders https://briefnews.eu/android-wear-updates-leave-glitches-with-assistant-and-reminders/ https://briefnews.eu/android-wear-updates-leave-glitches-with-assistant-and-reminders/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 21:13:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/android-wear-updates-leave-glitches-with-assistant-and-reminders/

It’s… not the best time to have an Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch on your wrist. Owners are reporting bugs with the wearable software that have either persisted through or appear to be caused by recent updates. Most notably, Google Assistant is outright broken for some users — it won’t do more than basic internet searches. If you want to control your smart lights or set a timer, you might be out of luck.

The other flaw has been hanging around for a while. Android Wear users have had problems with Android Wear falsely markign recurring reminders as completed, and this was supposed to have been fixed in a patch. However, users report that they’re still missing reminders — in at least some cases, the patch did nothing. That’s not exactly heartening if you want reminders to take medicine or pay your bills.

In both cases, Google says it’s aware of the issues and is working on fixes. If you’re affected, you shouldn’t have to wait long. As Android Police points out, though, the rash of serious glitches (which includes older issues like an account copying bug) is becoming a lot to bear. The smartwatch market isn’t particularly healthy right now, and that won’t be helped if Android Wear users can’t count on key features working as promised.

There are glitches happening in the market matrix https://briefnews.eu/there-are-glitches-happening-in-the-market-matrix/ https://briefnews.eu/there-are-glitches-happening-in-the-market-matrix/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2017 04:02:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/there-are-glitches-happening-in-the-market-matrix/ matrix neo warner brosWarner Bros. Entertainment

For the past two weeks, investors have enjoyed perfection: All four major averages have snagged consecutive new record highs and the S&P 500 has climbed for 12 of the last 14 sessions. Interest rates remain low.

Volatility has been quelled, with nearly 90 days elapsed since the last 1 percent decline, as global economic data improves. Earnings growth has rebounded. President Trump is ready to lower taxes.

All of this caps one of the quietest four-year periods in market history and the quietest January of all time. And it comes despite the turmoil in Washington, D.C. as the Trump administration, depending on your political outlook, gets to work in rolling out its agenda amid “fake news” criticism or is demonstrating a frightening incompetency.

But the market isn’t quite as placid as it seems. There are glitches in the Matrix — bizarre behavior and unexplainable events taking place just beneath the surface — if you know where to look.

Consider, for instance, market breadth — the percentage of stocks rising within the market. It’s been narrowing consistently as traders focus on a shrinking list of upward-bounds stocks, ignoring the growing list of laggards.

Jason Goepfert of SentimenTrader notes that the S&P 500’s march to new highs has been driven by fewer than 80 companies, less than 16 percent of the index. While that didn’t matter when it happened in 1995, the other times it happened (in 1997, 2005, 2010 and July 2016), fresh gains were subsequently wiped out.

The focus on rising issues — mainly in the technology and financial sectors — is creating some rare milestones. Consider that technology stocks in the S&P 500 nabbed their 14th straight gain on Tuesday, the longest streak since 1926. Yep, not since the Coolidge administration have “tech” stocks been this hot.

More oddities?

How about that fact the market hasn’t suffered a “bad close” so far this year — one in which it ended trading in the bottom 20 percent of its daily range (one of the longest such streaks in history). The breakout of the last few weeks is coming in what is historically supposed to be an underperforming month (especially in the first year of a new president’s term).

The recent gains have separated stocks from earnings growth expectations as valuations become stretched (see chart below). All the while, bulls are ignoring not just the political uncertainty —including that surrounding Trump’s tax plan — but also a broad rise in inflation that will up the pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise rates more aggressively. And hedge funds, which are supposed to lean against frothy conditions like this, are now carrying their third-highest market exposure going back to 2003, according to data compiled by Goepfert.

Want more?

Well the narrow buying dynamic isn’t limited to just the United States. According to Societe Generale quantitative analyst Andrew Lapthorne, out of the 1,650 stocks in the MSCI World index, only 246 have hit new all-time highs this year. The average stock is still down 26 percent from its high.

Outside of stocks, trading in other assets suggest something is amiss as well. Yields on 10-year Treasuries haven’t broken through the 2.5 percent level as one would expect given hawkish testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen and higher-than-expected inflation data. The US dollar has drifted lower despite strong market gains and solid economic data. And crude oil futures remain moribund and rangebound.

Plus, take a look at what’s happening to the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX). Known as Wall Street’s “Fear Gauge” because of the way it captures the premium on options that protect against market selloffs, the VIX posted an inexplicable 11.5 percent rally, closing over its 50-day moving average last Wednesday for the first time since December and then recapturing that level on Tuesday.

This effectively breaks one of the strong cross-asset relationships in the stock market — akin to suddenly seeing snow on a clear summer’s day. One possible explanation is that the unusual and very extended market rally is encouraging hedge fund types to prepare for a selloff.

This episode, while not enough of a catalyst to destabilize the market, reveals just how thin and fragile trading really is right now. Things that shouldn’t be happening are. And assets that are supposed to trade a certain way suddenly aren’t.

Taken together, it all suggests investors — especially those maintaining their own retirement accounts — should be skeptical and cautious.

Not only is Yakuza a good time, but it’s glitches and bugs can be, too. And here are the best ones of all.

Like any big game these days, Yakuza 6 has some glitchy parts.

Such as this.

Or this buggy bit when the main character went M.I.A., turning Yakuza 6 into a first-person game. These are okay! But not the best.

This double chair glitch, though, is certainly one of the most enjoyable ones.

The best one of all, however, is the toddler glitch. In one mission, you are supposed to carry around a small child, like so:

But…
