Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus builds some pretty fantastic machines. The race team turned road car producer is most famous for owner James Glickenhaus’ Ferrari Enzo-based Pininfarina-designed P4/5 and the more recent SCG 003. Last fall, SCG announced the 004S, a three-seat sports car with a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8. More recently, the company revealed plans to build a modern road-legal version of the Boot, a simple and rugged Baja-blasting off-roader that was raced by Steve McQueen back in ’60s.
Glickenhaus purchased McQueen’s Boot a few years back, adding a bit of variety to his Ferrari-heavy collection. The Boot was built in the ’60s and was an amalgamation of GM parts and Hurst (shifters) fabrication. Info on the SCG Boot is scarce, with just a few renderings and some info sprinkled onto the company’s social media site. The car isn’t necessarily a looker, but there’s something charming about the function over form design.
While much of it’s still up in the air, SCG says the boot will be powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, selectable four-wheel drive, 20 inches of suspension travel and even heating and air conditioning. Based on the renderings, there will be a four-door variant sometime down the line. A special volcano edition is meant to tackle the world altitude record. The current record is just shy of 22,000 feet at the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile.
Like the SCG 004S, the Boot will be road legal under NHTSA’s low-volume manufacturer provisions. This grants small automakers some leniency when it comes to regulations. SCG describes it as a mix of Baja and Dakar racers. SCG wants to have a vehicle on the road in either 2019 or 2020 at a price of around $ 100,000.

Although James Glickenhaus is known for having one of the most incredible Ferrari collections out there, he has several other extremely rare and storied vehicles in his stable as well. One of the most interesting of the bunch is known as the Baja Boot, a legendary off-road buggy developed by Vic Hickey and raced by Steve McQueen. Not content with simply owning the Boot, Glickenhaus and his team at Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG)—the carmaker he founded—have plans to reboot the Boot and build a limited run of the dirt-hungry machines.
–
–
SCG hopes to launch the Boot with a run of 25 Founder’s Edition models that are modern versions of McQueen’s open-air ride. They would utilize modern engineering but retain a simple, old-school feel. SCG has also mentioned on its Facebook page, where the company has answered numerous questions about the project, that an even more modern four-door model could happen further down the pipeline. Regarding pricing, SCG first said in a post, “Likely less than Ferrari’s and Bentley’s SUV,” and then added later that it hopes to keep the base price near $ 100,000.

–
But the most ambitious idea is to build an Expedition variant that would have four doors and be fitted to handle the most challenging conditions. In addition to aiming to set a world record for altitude reached by car, SCG has floated the idea of driving from New York to Paris through the Bering Strait. As to the former, SCG has its sights set at going nearly 7000 meters, or almost 23,000 feet, up a volcano in South America, shooting for an attempt in the spring of 2019. The current Guinness world record was set in 2007 by Gonzalo Bravo and Eduardo Canales, who drove 6688 meters (21,942 feet) up the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile, in a modified 1986 Suzuki Samurai.

Specifications are at a premium as of this writing, but the new-age Boot is said to pack a naturally aspirated V-8, which could mean a road-legal GM powerplant. For the Expedition variant, SCG said it will likely add a two-stage turbocharging system. The Boot will also have 20 inches of suspension travel, heating and air conditioning, and two- and four-wheel drive. There is also mention of military-grade systems, seals, and sensors to deal with extreme hot and cold weather.
–
Topping these literally sky-high ambitions, SCG hopes to make first deliveries in 2019 to 2020. This may all depend on parts and powertrain sourcing as well as U.S. government approval of the vehicles as road legal, which is far from assured at this point.

Two years ago, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus raised eyebrows and heartbeats with the SCG 003 race car that doubled as a road car. The all-carbon beast with the ferocious nose demanded two million euros to purchase, and had to be imported to the US in pieces as a kit car. With the introduction of the three-seater, 650-horsepower SCG 004S sports car this week, the tyro Scuderia affirms its evolution toward small-volume carmaker. SCG’s certification as a Low Volume Manufacturer means the 004S will be built in the US and stamped with a VIN.
Yes, we wrote “three-seater.” The SCG 004S places the driver in the center of the cockpit, between two staggered outboard seats, swiping a page from the McLaren F1‘s long list of killer apps. A running prototype isn’t due until mid 2018, so specs are approximate for the moment: a mid-mounted 5.0-liter, twin-turbo engine gets around 650 hp and 531 pound-feet of torque, hitting its redline at about 8,200 rpm. That should provide expeditious acceleration, the carbon chassis and body in the 004S keeping weight down to around 2,600 pounds. A six-speed, three-pedal, gated manual comes standard, a paddle-shift can be specced. The benchmark SCG 003 S road car uses a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 800 hp and 627 lb-ft working through a seven-speed sequential gearbox.
The 004S exterior design combines a front aspect reminiscent of the bespoke SCG P4/5 Competizione with a rear end directly descended from the SCG 003. The middle features a bubble glasshouse anchored by flying buttresses winging down into rear fenders. The buttresses will remind some of the new Ford GT (or BMW i8 or Acura NSX), but in recent design history Jason Castriota’s Ferrari 599 design put functional buttresses back on the map, and Castriota’s Stile Bertone Mantide gave those winged elements top billing.
Inside, a lengthy row of analog dials, toggle switches, and knobs dominates the SCG 004S instrument panel. The only digital concessions appear to be a rearview camera, and race information panel to the right of the driver’s seat, just above an iPhone dock. In contrast to the new-school carbon exterior, the streak of white gauges – fronted by a steering wheel that Steve McQueen might have handed over between driving stints – channels a hardy old-school racer ready for hard old-school driving.
SCG will be pleased to engrave your name in the pre-order books right now, taking a $ 40,000 deposit against the 004S base price around $ 400,000. Sometime in 2019 should see the delivery of 25 Founders Edition coupes, and a European racing program that includes the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. The company plans scale production of 250 cars per year by 2021.

Sometimes only the finest of lines divides genius from madness. It’s near that boundary that James Glickenhaus seems to have lived most of his life. His latest idea—as explained to Car and Driver on the company’s stand at the Geneva auto show—is a classic example. He wants to run a no-holds-barred competition at the Nürburgring to finally establish just which street-legal car is fastest around the ever-hyped Nordschleife circuit.
–
There is an ulterior motive. Glickenhaus is convinced this will prove that his own car, the roadgoing SCG 003S, will prove to be the quickest, on the not unreasonable grounds that it is closely based on the SCG 003C race car that has already proved itself in multiple endurance races at the ’Ring. (Glickenhaus is the enthusiast who took the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and evolved it into a racer, and he has since diversified into what is basically his own car company: Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus.) His proposition is compellingly simple—and compellingly mad at the same time:
–
“What I am proposing to do is to endow the Glickenhaus Road Cup, which will be run at the Nürburgring 24 hours [event] after the race cars qualify. Here are the rules: an individual has to own the car, so there’s no bullshit, and it has to be road registered and legal. You start at Cologne and then drive to Nürburg on the same set of tires you will set a time on—they have to be real road tires, not those special tires that get dropped off in a safe. They have to be tires you can buy from [a place like] Tire Rack. Then everybody drives and sets a time, and whoever is fastest is the winner. That’s it.”
–

–
–
Glickenhaus has already established a trophy for race cars, awarded to the Nürburgring 24 Hours contender that sets the fastest time in official qualifying. But he admits that this idea, which he hopes to run for the first time in 2018, doesn’t have the official sanction of the Nürburgring authorities yet.
–
“They don’t even know about it yet,” he said. “They’re reading about it in the press and they’re going to be [saying], ‘F—king Jim, what the hell is he doing?’ But I’m serious. I’m going to make this happen. I can’t get it together for this year. My idea is to have them yell and scream, ‘How can you say you’re going to do that? You’re an idiot and an asshole, and we hate you.’ Then they’ll get over that, and we’ll come back and race at the Nürburgring for next year. We’re going to do it.”
–
Glickenhaus’s inspiration comes from his anger, sometimes volcanically expressed, about rival automakers’ claimed Nordschleife times and the lack of independent verification, calling out Lamborghini’s recent record-setting lap of 6:52:01 in the Huracán Performante for particular criticism. (Lamborghini has released its telemetry from the lap to defend its claim; you can read more about the controversy and the data at Road & Track.)
–
“Let’s talk about that,” he said. “The standard Huracán was how much slower than the [Performante]? Thirty-five seconds. As a physicist and a skeptical person, let’s say I’m [certainly] skeptical. Listen to the video, and you hear no tires squealing. Road tires squeal. End of discussion.”
–

–
–
He continued: “The next day, Pirelli said that these were specially developed road tires. Then they published that video, and the experts got onto it to say this didn’t happen, we measured the velocities and the distances and the frame rates, [and] we don’t believe it.” (The experts cited by Glickenhaus are race driver Dale Lomas and YouTube personality Misha Charoudin, both intimately familiar with the German track; they’ve published their takes on the Lambo lap at Lomas’s Bridge to Gantry website and on Charoudin’s YouTube channel.)
–
Glickenhaus is in no doubt that his car is substantially quicker, and he is itching to have a chance to prove it. “We know its [race] sister can do a 6:20 lap,” he said. “It did that with 580 horsepower, 220 pounds more downforce, and half a g more lateral cornering ability. But this car weighs the same and has 300 more horsepower and 250 lb-ft more torque. On race tires, it would be faster than the race car. It would go under 6:20. On road tires, it will be about 30 seconds a lap slower. So the fastest a road-legal car [would] go on real tires is about a 6:40.”
–
When asked about his rivals, Glickenhaus did a nice line in trash talk. “I think they’ll shit. I think they’ll hate me like they already do,” he said, before passing comment on Koenigsegg’s failed attempt to break the record, foiled by both the Nürburgring authorities and a heavy crash in testing: “I love Christian [von Koenigsegg], he’s a hell of a guy, but Koenigsegg’s not me. He’s not got an award from the Nürburgring for extraordinary passion or engineering.” On Aston Martin’s forthcoming Valkyrie: “They’ve said it’s going to corner at four and a half g’s. There’s no car on road-legal tires that is cornering at above two g’s, no matter what bullshit they tell you. It’s the laws of physics.”
–

–
–
The forthcoming Mercedes-AMG Project One gets an easier ride, possibly because Glickenhaus is thinking of buying one. “They will make an incredible car, absolutely. Will it have an actual Formula 1 engine in some streetable configuration? I believe it will. Will it be road legal? They say yes. But do I think it will be as fast around the Nürburgring as my car? It may be as fast, but it won’t be faster.”
–
There’s something of the fight impresario about Glickenhaus, stirring up controversy he hopes to profit from, although in terms of glory rather than money. Although a very wealthy man, he has already put plenty of his fortune where his mouth is, admitting to having spent more than $ 20 million on his 003C race and 003S road-car projects so far.
–
–
–
–
–
“Why? Because it’s awesome fun,” he said. “Because, when your time goes, it doesn’t matter how much money you’re left with, what’s left is the memories you have. How many people get to do all this in a car with their name on it?”
–
Presuming this crazy idea gets off the ground, we definitely plan to be in attendance for the first running of the Glickenhaus Road Cup.
