The guest list for Apple TV+’s exclusive Afterparty has been revealed, and it’s a veritable satirical dream team.

Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Dave Franco (Neighbors), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Ben Schwartz (Space Force), Sam Richardson (Veep) and Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project) have been tapped to star in the eight-episode murder mystery-themed comedy series from Last Man on Earth EPs Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Also joining the ensemble as series regulars are Zoë Chao (Strangers), John Early (Search Party) and Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag).

Each of The Afterparty‘s eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same high school reunion afterparty from a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.

Ex-Last OG star Haddish will preside over the crime scene as Detective Danner, the eccentric detective assigned to solve the high-profile case. She will work alongside an overly-eager partner (Early). The remaining seven cast members will play the former high school classmates.

Richardson’s Aniq is a loveable escape room designer who hopes to reconnect with his high school crush, Zoe; Chao’s Zoe’ is a former artist turned school administrator who is newly separated from her high school sweetheart; Barinholtz is said former sweetheart Brett, an arrogant ex-jock; Schwartz is Yasper, Aniq’s relentlessly positive best friend who dreams of a career in music; Glazer is Chelsea, the former high school valedictorian and class president; Franco is Xavier, once a dorky high school drama student, now a famous pop star and actor; and Demetriou is Walt, who was ignored throughout high school and attends the reunion with hopes to be remembered.

Miller will serve as series creator and showrunner of The Afterparty. He’s also an EP alongside Lord.

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer found fame four years ago when their web series Broad City became a full fledged original series on Comedy Central. Now that the show has raised their comedy profile to make them in-demand actress in both films and television, the two are ready to bring Broad City to an end with the show’s fifth season. But that doesn’t mean they’re done bringing the laughs to Comedy Central.

Broad City Season 5 Ending the Series

Comedy Central recently announced that Broad City season 5 will be the final outing for Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer as the two best friends trying to make it as best they can in New York City, even when everything and everyone seems to be against them. The characters are essentially exaggerated versions of the actresses themselves, inspired by their own friendship. And even though the Comedy Central series has only ran for five seasons, the web series ran for years before that, making it nearly a decade that Abbi and Ilana have been writing and playing these characters.

The two actresses made a joint statement for Comedy Central about the end of their series:

“Broad City has been our baby and first love for almost ten years, since we started as a web series. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely. Broad City’s always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit.”

Fans will have to wait a little while to see new episodes though, since the fifth season won’t arrive until 2019. But don’t worry, that’s not the last we’ll see of Abbi and Ilana at Comedy Central.

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s New Comedy Central Shows

Along with the announcement of Broad City season 5, the folks at Comedy Central announced three new shows that will be executive produced by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, who have sparked a new first look deal with Comedy Central. Here are the three new shows in the works:

 

  • Mall Town USA: An animated comedy that follows the afterschool misadventures of a 13-year-old girl navigating the complexities of life in the classic microcosm of American culture that is The Mall.Written and created by Gabe Liedman (Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and executive produced by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.
  • Platinum Status: Set in the hipster-heavy east side of Los Angeles, Platinum Status tells the story of professional back-up singer Noah (Eliot Glazer), a gay guy who’s always felt left out of the “community.” And after he’s dumped by his boyfriend of ten years, Noah rebounds in the least likely way: by hooking up with a girl. With help from his friends Kevin and Mimi and guidance from his kinda-sorta-girlfriend Alexa, Noah tries to evolve both in the bedroom and the recording studio.Eliot Glazer will write and executive produce and Ilana Glazer will also executive produce along with Principato Young’s Peter Principato and Brian Steinberg and Electric Avenue’s Will Arnett and Marc Forman.
  • Young Professionals: At age twenty-four, David Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Described as the “comic muse for the president,” Litt served as the lead writer for many of President Obama’s most memorable comedic moments, and his recent memoir, Thanks, Obama, is a New York Times best seller. Inspired by Litt’s coming-of-age in our nation’s capital, Young Professionals follows five housemates growing up – personally, politically, and professionally – in the hopelessly absurd world of Washington, D.C.Written by and executive produced by Litt, with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer also serving as executive producers.

These all sound unique and promising in their own way, and they sound significantly different from what Jacobson and Glazer already accomplished with Broad City. Each show will bring a unique voice to Comedy Central and maybe they’ll follow in the footsteps of the Broad City creators to land an even bigger comedy career.

THE SHOW|Broad City

THE EPISODE| “Witches” (Oct. 25, 2017)

THE PERFORMANCE| Let’s see, how do we phrase this delicately? Glazer delivered a rather, um, explosive performance this week, as her TV alter ego rediscovered a certain, ah, satisfaction that had thus far eluded her in our post-Trump America.

Glazer has always been an absolute comedy dynamo as the mischievous, impulse-driven Ilana — if they gave out Emmys for comedy duos, she and co-star Abbi Jacobson would have several by now — but she was uncharacteristically muted at the start of this week’s episode. Turns out Ilana was secretly seeing a sex therapist, where the normally sex-positive hipster realized to her horror that she hadn’t had an orgasm since Election Day. (Her therapist sympathized: “Orgasms have been down 140 percent since Trump was elected,” she noted gravely.)

It feels strange to call a masturbation scene both hilarious and inspiring, but Glazer somehow managed just that during Ilana’s carnal breakthrough, as she fought off distracting visions of Trump like a woman possessed and valiantly reclaimed her sexual power. (And then some.) It was a highly profane, but very relatable, snapshot of the political overload we’re all feeling these days, and Glazer’s boisterously brave, fully committed performance reminded us that in these trying times, we all need to find release somewhere.

HONORABLE MENTION |Once Upon a Time‘s latest spin on that tale as old as time made our hearts swell and our eyes well, as Emilie de Ravin turned in a beauty of an encore. In scenes spanning decades, the series vet for the first time got to play an unfettered princess in love, with Rumbelle’s rocky days now behind them and a lifetime together before them. With withering Belle’s final monologue, though, de Ravin invited us to feel every bit of true, abundant love that in seasons past needed to be buffered by drama. Adding some creak to her timbre and working through age makeup — and opposite Robert Carlyle’s own all-out performance — de Ravin’s detailing of Belle’s selfless agenda, followed by a recap of the couple’s oft-trying but undeniably storybook romance, added up to a scene as heartwarming as it was heartbreaking, and one of the series’ very best.

HONORABLE MENTION| As Riverdale‘s Kevin Keller, Casey Cott is usually confined to making snarky quips and helping Betty with her romantic problems. But Cott got to explore what it’s really like to be a gay teen in a small town this week, as Kevin revealed he’s been “night jogging” — i.e. cruising the woods after dark for clandestine hookups with men. Betty was worried about Kevin’s safety, but Cott made Kevin’s pent-up frustration palpable as he snapped at her: “You live in this pale, pink world of milkshakes and first kisses,” while he has to settle for fumbling in the woods. Cott was poignantly vulnerable as Kevin visited his secret hookup Moose in the hospital, and reached a new understanding with his gruff sheriff dad. It’s a side of gay adolescence we haven’t seen portrayed very often on TV, and Cott more than rose to the challenge.

HONORABLE MENTION| It hadn’t actually been 20 years since Sam Heughan and Outlander co-star Caitriona Balfe last shared a scene, but after the intricate performance Heughan turned in this week, you could’ve fooled us. As Jamie saw his long-lost wife for the first time in decades, Heughan communicated the complicated mix of emotions that such an encounter would spark. He’s excellent throughout the episode — note how often Jamie looks at Claire as though he can’t quite believe she’s really there — but especially when the Frasers tentatively approached each other in the print shop. The joy and relief that ebbed from Heughan’s whole body as Jamie quietly came undone spoke volumes. You could also tell that Jamie was thinking things (suspicions? hopes?) that he dared not voice just yet, meaning we can anticipate more amazing work from Heughan in the weeks to come.

One of the best comedy series on TV right now is undoubtedly Broad City. What first felt like the female answer to Workaholics has become the shining beacon in Comedy Central’s current line-up of shows as Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have taken New York City by storm across three seasons. Now the fourth season is coming later this year, and the first trailer gives us a taste of what’s in store, including plenty of risque shenanigans, some fantastic new guest stars, and at least one episode where they leave New York City for a warmer climate.

Even though this trailer is just a collection of wackiness, we still get a good sense of the kind of insanity that will be coming from this season. Plus, Abbi and Ilana are likely in for a rude awakening since they were so gung ho about Hillary Clinton winning the presidency, only to now have to deal with Donald Trump in the White House. In fact, Jacobson and Glazer wrote the fourth season thinking that Clinton was going to win, so they had to make some changes before shooting this past February.

One of those changes includes setting this season during winter in New York City, unlike the rest of the previous seasons. Glazer previously told The Daily Beast that this season would be “dark as fuck” and the winter setting will certainly help that, which explains why the girls end up in a warmer climate, going to Florida at some point during the season. Plus, the girls get animated, presumably for an episode involving some hallucinogenic drugs.

Beyond that, it’s business as usual as Ilana and Abbi taunt some abortion protesters, experiment sexually, get botox, and defy Donald Trump with masturbating. There also looks to be some kind of flashback episode, if I’m not mistaken. That seems to be what that scene involving Abbi meeting her annoying roommate Bevers (John Gemberling) is all about, and I think that might be what’s happening in the scenes where Ilana is wearing an orange wig and appears to meet Lincoln (Hannibal Buress) for the first time.

Guest stars this season include Ru Paul, Steve Buscemi, Wanda Sykes and Jane Curtin. Shania Twain also appears as a new member at Abbi’s gym. Hopefully there are plenty more surprises in store when the fourth season hits Comedy Central starting on August 23.

But given that it’s written by Broad City scribes Lucia Aniello (who directs) and Paul W. Downs (City‘s overzealous gym coach, Trey Pucker), it’s clearly worth continuing.

Other enticing factors: the film, formerly very literally titled Rock That Body (honestly, I wish it still were) is about the five women — former college best friends — reuniting, reminiscing, then doing a lot of cocaine and trying to deal with the accidental-murder-by-too-much-enthusiastic-mounting of a male stripper at a bachelorette party. It looks like The Hangover meets Bridesmaids meets Weekend at Bernie’s. Exhibit a.:
