Google
Diane Greene, CEO for Google’s cloud businesses, spoke on a wide range of subjects regarding Google and the company’s rivals Wednesday night. She covered nearly everything other than the one topic that’s grabbed the most headlines of late.
At the annual “Most Powerful Women Evening” event hosted by Fortune magazine, Greene said that she “wouldn’t have minded buying” Github. When asked about Google’s competition with Amazon Web Services for cloud supremacy, she boasted that Google’s cloud possessed “better technology.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

As part of Microsoft’s $ 7.5 billion purchase of cloud source code repository GitHub, the company is installing a new CEO. Once the deal closes (which is expected to happen later this year), out will go GitHub co-founder Chris Wanstrath and in will come Nat Friedman. Friedman is the former CEO of Xamarin, the cross-platform .NET implementation that Microsoft bought in 2016.
Friedman brings solid open-source bona fides: core parts of the Xamarin stack were open source, and Friedman’s previous company, Ximian, was created to develop the open-source GNOME project. His appointment should quell many of the fears that open-source developers have about the takeover. To engage with the community further, Friedman today did a Reddit AMA to answer questions about the acquisition.
The main thrust of his replies? Microsoft doesn’t really intend to change much at GitHub. When asked if GitHub users should expect any big alterations, Friedman answered that Microsoft is “buying GitHub because [it] likes GitHub” and intends to “make GitHub better at being GitHub.” Although there will be “full integration” between GitHub and Visual Studio Team Services, there won’t be any radical changes in trajectory or service offerings.

GUEST: It’s no longer controversial: The tech universe rotates around developers. A little over a year ago, I wrote about how developers are more powerful than ever. They play a critical role in turning raw technological power into custom applications that make life easier – and create value. Over the last decade, they have ascended to become…Read More

GUEST: When the news that Microsoft is acquiring GitHub became official early Monday, reactions were mixed. Understandably, GitHub’s user base, which consists mostly of developers, is skeptical of the move. The union of a source code platform with the maker of Office 360 (and Microsoft Clippy) might seem like an odd pairing. But if you believe that…Read More

The rumors were true: Microsoft has confirmed it’s buying GitHub for a whopping $ 7.5 billion in an all-stock transaction. Reports first emerged last week that Microsoft was in advanced discussions to acquire the code-hosting repository, and these reports intensified over the weekend. Now we know for sure. According to Microsoft, GitHub will a…Read More

One of the more surprising stories of the past year was Microsoft’s announcement that it was going to use the Git version control system for Windows development. Microsoft had to modify Git to handle the demands of Windows development but said that it wanted to get these modifications accepted upstream and integrated into the standard Git client.
That plan appears to be going well. Yesterday, the company announced that GitHub was adopting its modifications and that the two would be working together to bring suitable clients to macOS and Linux.
Microsoft wanted to move to Git because of Git’s features, like its easy branching and its popularity among developers. But the transition faced three problems. Git wasn’t designed for such vast numbers of developers—more than 20,000 actively working on the codebase. Also, Git wasn’t designed for a codebase that was so large, either in terms of the number of files and version history for each file, or in terms of sheer size, coming in at more than 300GB. When using standard Git, working with the source repository was unacceptably slow. Common operations (such as checking which files have been modified) would take multiple minutes.

GitHub may have a reputation as a hub for up-and-coming young coders, but the $ 2 billion company has a secret user base driving its success: corporations.
About half of GitHub’s $ 200 million in annual revenue comes from businesses, according to chief strategy officer Julio Avalos. And that number is growing as more and more software developers who learned to code on GitHub’s site get hired by corporations and encourage their new companies to use GitHub as well.
The distinction between “enterprise versus consumer is going away,” Avalos said.
GitHub offers its core services — project spaces, code libraries, and forums — for free to anyone who wants to create open-source software. But for corporations who are willing to pay for a service it calls GitHub Enterprise, the company offers additional features, including private workspaces, 24-7 support, and more dynamic cloud hosting options.
GitHubThe company offers another paid service that allows users to keep their code private. Subscription fees from that service account for the other half of its total revenue.
GitHub first launched its enterprise service as a way to allow companies to store code on their own servers, rather than in GitHub’s data centers, Avalos told Business Insider. This spring, GitHub added on an option that allows corporate customers to store their work on the major cloud services, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Its enterprise service has proven to be popular. In its recently released user report, the company said 52% of Fortune 50 corporations are GitHub Enterprise customers, as are 45% of those in the Fortune 100. Microsoft and Facebook run the two largest projects on GitHub’s site.
The company’s enterprise push comes as it is rumored to be preparing for an IPO. With investors likely eager for a growth story, GitHub could be pressed to offer one.
Avalos sees some opportunities for the company. More than half of the Fortune 100 aren’t yet GitHub customers, so there’s room for growth there, he said. And he noted that the company has set a major goal of expanding its international reach, particularly to China.
But Avalos acknowledges the company faces some growth challenges ahead.
There are only about 21 million software developers in the world, according to market research firm IDC. GitHub already has 24 million users, although many of them likely aren’t actual coders.
Regardless, there just aren’t enough software developers globally, Avalos said, adding that GitHub needs to help produce more. He thinks it’s GitHub’s responsibility to explore ways to reach populations who might not think about computer science as a viable career path for themselves.
GitHub can help, particularly in the US, by “playing a role in education and on-ramping,” he said.

The Internet Bug Bounty (IBB), a not-for-profit bug bounty program backed by such tech companies as Facebook and Microsoft, revealed that it has received three $ 100,000 donations from Facebook, an existing donor, and new investors GitHub and the Ford Foundation.
Founded in 2013, the IBB provides financial incentives to security researchers and “white hat hackers” to identify weaknesses in core internet infrastructure and open source software such as Ruby, PHP, Python, and OpenSSL. The organization is managed by a panel of volunteers from across the security realm, including employees from Uber, Microsoft, Facebook, Adobe, and fellow bug bounty body HackerOne.
Facebook has sponsored the IBB since its inception, so it’s perhaps no surprise to see the social networking giant participate in additional funding, but code-hosting repository GitHub and the billion-dollar Ford Foundation are notable additions to the IBB’s squadron of backers.
“Open source software underpins the backbone of the internet and society’s most critical digital infrastructure,” explained Shawn Davenport, VP of security at GitHub. “We believe deeply in the importance of this initiative, and we’re excited to sponsor the Internet Bug Bounty and support the people who work tirelessly everyday to ensure the internet is as safe and secure as it can possibly be.”
Today’s news comes a day after The Tor Project launched its first ever public bug bounty program through HackerOne. This followed the involvement of many other well-known companies, including Twitter, which paid out more than $ 300,000 in prizes between 2014 and 2016, as well as Airbnb, Uber, Yelp, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
“When we have the means to reward altruistic hackers for uncovering critical vulnerabilities in public domains, we are making the internet a safer place for everyone,” added Alex Rice, HackerOne CTO and founder, who serves on the IBB’s panel.
The IBB said that since its launch it has awarded more than $ 600,000 in bounties to hackers, covering 625 vulnerabilities.

Coraline Ada Ehmke
A month ago, well-known programmer Coraline Ada Ehmke was fired from her job at GitHub.
When it happened, she knew she was going to want to publicly speak out about her frustrating time at the company, so she did something that people rarely do: she turned down the company’s severance package. To get the money, she would have had to sign a non-disparagement non-disclosure agreement, she told Business Insider.
She found another job and a few weeks after that, after getting the OK from her current employer, she wrote a tell-all of her year at GitHub.
“I was very privileged in this case. I have a good support network, so people who care about me and support my work actually put up the money I would have gotten in severance to make sure I had enough to live on and still had the opportunity to tell my story,” Ehmke told Business Insider.
Ehmke isn’t alleging that she experienced sexual harassment, discrimination, or anything else illegal. She blames “inexperienced management” and a rough corporate culture for a frustrating year there.
GitHub/GlassdoorAs a trans woman in tech, Ehmke made a name for herself by speaking out about inclusion, writing community conduct codes to promote diversity, and other such work. She’s also been known to cause a hubbub in the open source community with her outspoken ways.
GitHub hired Ehmke in 2015 knowing she was a rabble rouser for causes of diversity and, Ehmke says, they wanted her because of that. She says her GitHub managers “constantly praised” her for her productivity but also constantly told her that she was being too abrasive. Although she was a senior engineer, Ehmke says her manager put her on weekly 1:1 meetings and reviewed “all of my written communication.”
She thought she was improving in that area and achieving other goals that put her on track for a promotion. But instead she got a bad review, was put on a “performance improvement plan,” and fired shortly after.
Of course, there are two sides to every story, and not every hire at every company works out. GitHub won’t tell its side because it has a policy against commenting on HR matters. “As a matter of company policy, we don’t comment on personnel issues. At GitHub, we have worked hard to build a diverse and inclusive culture and are committed to these values at every level of the company,” a spokesperson told Business Insider.
Still, Ehmke’s written account of her issues at the company sounds a lot like the kind of issue that Facebook COO and feminist Sheryl Sandberg has been warning about since her “Lean In” book published in 2013. Sandberg’s premise is that women who are cheered for delivering results are also often reprimanded for being too aggressive, difficult, or abrasive in ways that men are not.
Today, more women in tech are speaking out about the sexism, sexual harassment, discrimination, and even sexual assault they’ve experienced in their careers. And powerful people are losing their jobs as a result.
Flickr/by DaveFayramBut this experience at GitHub left Ehmke thinking that no real progress is being made.
GitHub’s big sexual harassment scandal was back in 2014, when a female programmer made allegations. GitHub always denied those allegations but ultimately the founder CEO resigned. It has been working hard on its reputation ever since.
“Here was a company that, from an outside perspective, seemed to be taking culture change more seriously. They’ve hired some really good people to turn things around,” Ehmke says. “I’m not seeing systematic change. Maybe it’s too early for me to be hopeful. Maybe the wounds are still too fresh.”
Still, she believes that what’s needed for real change to happen in Silicon Valley is for more people like her, in a position to shun the “hush money,” to tell their stories.
“We need more women and marginalized people to speak up if it’s safe for them to do so,” she says.
And it’s not really safe. Women who speak out are subject to everything from threats to “doxing,” where hackers publish personal identifying information about a person and make them even bigger targets.
“Speaking out is a risk and I don’t know how safe I am. That’s why I waited until I got a new job before I wrote,” she said.
“I’ve been doxed before, I’ve been threatened before. I’ve had horrible experiences. But I’m in a position that I can handle that because I’m older, I’m well established in my career, and I have a good support network. So it’s up to people like me to take that abuse and to speak out because other people can’t,” she said.
