Comcast’s gigabit cable service is now available to nearly all of the 58 million homes and businesses in the company’s US territory, Comcast announced yesterday.

Comcast, the nation’s largest ISP with more than 26 million subscribers, began rolling out gigabit cable in early 2016. It’s now available almost universally through Comcast’s territory that includes 39 states and the District of Columbia.

Comcast’s gigabit cable relies on DOCSIS 3.1 technology to deliver download speeds of up to 1,000Mbps, though Comcast notes that speeds will vary based on network traffic and “actual download speeds might be limited to 940Mbps due to Ethernet technical limitations.” Upload speeds are still limited to a comparatively paltry 35Mbps.

Hyundai Plans Gigabit Ethernet for Some In-Car Networks, but What Does That Mean? https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 18:18:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/ Hyundai-Cisco-Ethernet-logo

As automated and connected cars roll into dealerships over the next decade, they’ll need high-bandwidth networks to support these critical, data-hungry functions. Korean automaker Hyundai says it is committing to faster ethernet connectivity to power the core of its next-gen vehicles.

–

The Korean automaker has announced that it will “accelerate innovation, provide ‘over the air updates,’ and shorten the life cycle in bringing new capabilities to market” by using ethernet at up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). A collaboration with Cisco will see primarily ethernet-driven Hyundais hit the market starting in 2019.

–

Electronics in modern cars have become incredibly complex, but they’re slower—like, 10,000 times slower in data throughput—than a USB 3.1 port. Most cars connect their electronic control units (ECUs) via a controller area network, or CAN. Bosch introduced this standard in 1986 to reduce the weight and cost of heavy wiring harnesses, and it has proven to be a robust, reliable, and inexpensive network for in-car use. While initially meant for automobiles, CAN has moved into the marine, aerospace, and medical industries, where some hospital operating rooms rely on it. But CAN can’t manage adaptive suspensions and other drive-by-wire systems with precision. It also can’t process sensor data from radar, lidar, and visual cameras fast enough. For fully autonomous cars—or even for one pedestrian-detection alert—CAN just isn’t the answer.

–

As a serial interface, a CAN bus can only transmit or receive one bit of data at a time; compare this to the multiple packets of bits sent and received by your mobile phone. Speeds can top 1 megabit per second, which is essentially the gap between a 3G and 4G cellular network. CAN simply can’t keep up with sensors spewing out data greater than 100 times a second. Ethernet, by contrast, has a maximum data output that’s 1000 times faster than the fastest CAN interface.

–

But gigabit ethernet, despite how cheaply it can be embedded on computer motherboards, is expensive in a car. So far, it has been limited to infotainment systems like Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro and other similar uses; other leading in-car networks, such as FlexRay, have speeds of 10 megabits per second and can handle functions such as adaptive cruise control. Yet the fact remains that it’s neither simple nor cheap to make cars run as fast as our USB ports. Network security, electrical interference, cable length, and syncing dozens upon dozens of ECUs are things that keep automakers’ software developers and electrical engineers up all night.

–

–

Hyundai isn’t looking to replace CAN, nor is it suggesting the industry should. Many simple controls, such as for brake lights or window switches, will still be wired with CAN for many years to come. Until the R&D costs of ethernet (or another faster technology) come down, most cars will use a combination of CAN, FlexRay, and ethernet.

Just shy of a year after announcing that Windows was once again going to be available on ARM systems, the first two systems were announced today: the Asus NovaGo 2-in-1 laptop, and the HP Envy x2 tablet.

Branded as Always Connected PCs, the new Windows on ARM systems are positioned as bringing together the best of PCs and smartphones. They have PC form factors, with the productivity enabled by a real keyboard, touchpad, and general purpose operating system capable of running regular Windows software, but they bring with them the seamless switching between LTE and Wi-Fi, instant on, multiple working day battery life, and slimline, lightweight packaging that we’re accustomed to on our phones.

The Asus laptop boasts 22 hours of battery life or 30 days of standby, along with LTE that can run at gigabit speeds. HP’s tablet offers a 12.3 inch, 1920×1280 screen, 20 hours of battery life or 29 days of standby, and a removable keyboard-cover and stylus. Both systems use the Snapdragon 835 processor and X16 LTE modem, with HP offering up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage to go with it.

Google Fiber’s gigabit Internet service has consistently been priced at $ 70 a month since it launched in 2012, but it’s now available for just $ 55 in the ISP’s latest city.

Google Fiber in San Antonio, Texas comes in just one speed tier, offering 1Gbps download and upload speeds at the rate of $ 55 a month. Google Fiber charges $ 70 a month for standalone gigabit service in all other cities where it offers wired Internet service.

“[I]n San Antonio, we’ve priced our Fiber 1000 (1,000Mbps) service at $ 55 per month,” Google Fiber said in an announcement yesterday. “There’s no installation fee, no hidden fees, no contracts, and no data caps.”

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon ARM-based systems-on-chips are mainstays of the smartphone world, but the company is now positioning them as more than just smartphone processors: in conjunction with Microsoft and the new Windows 10 for ARM processors, Qualcomm is now pitching the chips as components of a new PC platform that brings together the best of the PC and the smartphone.

The Snapdragon 835 chip, incorporating Qualcomm’s latest X16 LTE modem, forms the basis of the Snapdragon Mobile PC Platform. Qualcomm claims that using the Snapdragon platform will offer a combination of the PC form factor and breadth of software, with features that are standard in smartphones: on-the-go connectivity, light weight, silent operation, long battery life, and no fan.

Qualcomm says that PCs built using the new chips will offer up to 50 percent more battery life than x86 systems, with four- to five-times longer standby times. They’ll take the Connected Standby capability already found in some Windows PCs—this allows the system to do things like sync mail and receive notifications even when “sleeping”—and make it better, thanks to their LTE connectivity.

Verizon’s gigabit upgrade pricing still makes almost no sense https://briefnews.eu/verizons-gigabit-upgrade-pricing-still-makes-almost-no-sense/ https://briefnews.eu/verizons-gigabit-upgrade-pricing-still-makes-almost-no-sense/#respond Sun, 07 May 2017 14:24:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/verizons-gigabit-upgrade-pricing-still-makes-almost-no-sense/

When Verizon FiOS unveiled a $ 70-per-month gigabit Internet plan two weeks ago, the company’s existing customers quickly discovered that the deal was too good to be true. It turned out that only new customers were eligible for the $ 70 price, even though Verizon’s announcement didn’t mention that caveat. Worse, existing subscribers who tried to upgrade were told that the standard price could be as high as $ 200 a month.

When we last wrote about this on April 25, the poorly implemented rollout was still causing confusion for both customers and Verizon customer service reps. Verizon promised to get the gigabit upgrade system working by April 30, saying that existing customers who upgraded to gigabit speeds would end up with monthly bills of around $ 95 a month, more or less.

But there’s still a lot of variation in prices and no good explanation for why some customers pay significantly more than others. The billing problems are supposed to be fixed by now, but Verizon customers we’ve talked to are getting upgrade prices ranging from about $ 67 to about twice as much for the same exact service.

Verizon is now selling what it calls “FiOS Gigabit Connection” for $ 69.99 a month in a change that boosts top broadband speeds and makes lower prices available to many Internet subscribers.

Actual bandwidth will be a bit lower than a gigabit per second, with “downloads as fast as 940Mbps and uploads as fast as 880Mbps,” Verizon’s announcement today said. The gigabit service is available in most of Verizon’s FiOS territory, specifically to “over 8 million homes in parts of the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, Va., Hampton Roads, Va., Boston, Providence and Washington, D.C. areas,” Verizon said.

Verizon’s FiOS territory includes more than 14 million homes, of which about 5.7 million subscribe to Verizon’s fiber Internet service. Verizon provided this link for checking gigabit availability.

ZTE’s Gigabit Phone wants to help usher the ‘5G era,’ will be unveiled at MWC https://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/ https://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/#respond Thu, 16 Feb 2017 08:37:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/ ZTE has quite a portfolio of smartphones lined up for Mobile World Congress this year — so much so that the company has announced what may be its next flagship device a little early: the ZTE Gigabit Phone.

The Chinese company says it’s a “forward-looking smartphone” for the 5G era, though the successor to 4G LTE is not expected to come until at least 2020. Naturally, the Gigabit Phone will allow for 1 gigabit per second download speeds, which ZTE believes would advance 360 degree panoramic virtual reality videos, allow for “instant cloud storage,” high-quality music- and movie-streaming, and more.

Unfortunately the company’s announcement today is largely a teaser — we don’t have any other information regarding specifications or even what the Gigabit Phone will look like. You’ll have to wait until the official unveiling in Barcelona at the end of February.

ZTE said at the show it will also highlight how the Axon 7, its current flagship, received the Android 7.0 Nougat update — meaning it is now the third smartphone to be compatible with Google’s Daydream View headset for Daydream, the search giant’s mobile virtual reality platform. The Axon 7 received the Nougat update a few weeks ago.

The Gigabit Phone won’t be the only new smartphone unveiled by ZTE, though, as the company said there will be more additions to its Blade series.

We will likely learn more about ZTE’s Hawkeye project as well, which looked to crowd-source ideas for a smartphone and fund it via Kickstarter. The project has hit a few roadblocks and may need to be pulled until the company comes back from the drawing board with some tweaks.

There are also rumors that the company is building an Android Wear smartwatch with LTE connectivity — the ZTE Quartz. It’s rumored to arrive later this year, but we could see the announcement at MWC.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about the Gigabit Phone and other upcoming announcements from ZTE.
