Starlink’s median download speeds in the US dropped from 90.6Mbps to 62.5Mbps between the first and second quarters of 2022, according to Ookla speed tests. Starlink’s median upload speeds in the US dropped from 9.3Mbps to 7.2Mbps in the same timeframe.

Median latency also got a little worse for Starlink’s US customers, rising from 43 ms to 48 ms. The latest numbers are in Ooka’s Q2 2022 report on Starlink speeds around the world, released Tuesday. “Starlink speeds decreased in every country we surveyed over the past year as more users sign up for service,” this week’s report said. The Q1 report is available here.

The Q2 report notes significant year-over-year decreases in Starlink speeds in numerous countries, while pointing out that overall performance is still pretty good:

Donald Trump.

  • Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi said Trump is drawn to QAnon like a moth to a flame.
  • Figliuzzi said Trump is embracing the movement because he feels "increasingly cornered."
  • Figliuzzi warned that violence could ensue if the QAnon movement felt threats to its leader.

A former FBI official said former President Donald Trump is likely feeling cornered and embracing the QAnon movement out of desperation.

Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI assistant director, was weighing in on Trump's links to the QAnon movement during a Monday appearance on MSNBC's "Deadline: White House." Host Nicolle Wallace asked Figliuzzi if he thinks Trump knows just how dangerous the movement is to the US.

"Oh, not only do I think he knows it, but I think that's what attracts him to this. It's like a moth to the flame," Figliuzzi said.

"And the thing is, he knows that he's increasingly cornered," Figliuzzi added. "He's in trouble on so many legal fronts, even criminal fronts now, that this is, kind of, the almost last act of a desperate man."

Figliuzzi referenced Trump's rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where a QAnon song played during Trump's speech. During the rally, Trump's supporters were seen pointing their fingers to the sky in a strange, one-finger salute, which experts say might have been a nod to the movement's slogan, "where we go one we go all."

While the stadium in Ohio was not fully filled, and thus a sign that Trump may be losing support from his base, Figliuzzi said there's still a significant threat from Trump and the QAnon movement.

"What is extremely dangerous based on past histories of cults, is that as they come near the end, as the leader is threatened, they get more and more dangerous," Figliuzzi said. "And they do something cult experts call 'forcing the end.'"

This could happen if the movement's leader "calls for the violence" or is "taken out," Figliuzzi said.

"The members take a step up and force the ending — whatever that could be," Figliuzzi said. "That's what concerns me and we've learned from January 6, it only takes a small number of people to do that."

The Trump rally in Ohio is just one of many recent instances in which the former president appeared to embrace QAnon — a movement that claims without basis that Trump is fighting a deep-state cabal of pedophiles. In a stream of messages after the FBI's raid of Mar-a-Lago, Trump shared over a dozen posts on his Truth Social account, some of which referenced QAnon and contained baseless conspiracy theories about the FBI. Other posts by the former president on the Truth Social platform in September included a reposted image of himself sporting a "Q" lapel pin, along with the movement's "where we go one we go all" slogan.

Figliuzzi and a representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Kourtney Kardashian's runway presentation with Boohoo debuted on Sept. 13 during New York Fashion Week 2022.

  • Boohoo is one of several fast fashion brands under investigation for sustainability practices.
  • Critics claim recent efforts, like debuting more environmentally friendly collections, are acts of greenwashing.
  • 'The most sustainable thing they can do is just cease operations altogether,' one critic said.

Fast-fashion brands are attempting to appeal to an increasingly eco-friendly audience, but critics aren't so sure their methods have the purest intentions.

UK-based fashion brand Pretty Little Thing and its parent company Boohoo are among the latest retailers facing scrutiny on claims they are misleading consumers that they are environmentally friendly, despite their reputations and investigations that say otherwise.

Boohoo was the latest to draw ire, after the fast-fashion giant announced a "sustainability and style" collaboration with Kourtney Kardashian Barker earlier this month. The 46-piece collection of garments is made from "recycled fibers," according to a release from Boohoo.

The partnership was met with heavy criticism on social media, Insider's Maria Noyen reported, as users slammed both Kardashian Barker and Boohoo for greenwashing — or "the act or practice of making (something) appear to be more environmentally friendly or less environmentally damaging than it really is," as defined by Merriam-Webster.

Several users pointed out that the company had previously been the subject of a 2019 investigation by the Sunday Times, which found Boohoo's UK factory workers were paid only £3.50, or $ 4.37, an hour.

The controversy comes on the heels of a separate investigation into potential greenwashing at Boohoo, among other fast-fashion retailers, conducted by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in July, The Guardian reported.

"People who want to 'buy green' should be able to do so confident that they aren't being misled," Sarah Cardell, the interim CMA chief executive, told The Guardian. "Eco-friendly and sustainable products can play a role in tackling climate change, but only if they are genuine."

Pretty Little Thing also faced greenwashing accusations of its own after announcing its "Pretty Little Thing Marketplace" feature in August. The new app allows users to buy and sell pre-owned garments from PLT and other fashion brands, according to the official website.

Much like the reaction to PLT's parent company over the Kardashian Barker collection, social media and critics users were similarly not happy with the brand's efforts to appear more sustainable, HuffPost reported.

"Their products are trend-led and ultra-fast, meaning they're specifically not designed to be resold or have any longevity whatsoever, so resale is never on the cards for those items," Sustainable fashion editor Brett Staniland told HuffPost.

He continued: "The most sustainable thing they can do is just cease operations altogether."

Boohoo and PLT aren't the only fast fashion brands getting called out for their attempts to go green. Swedish brand H&M is being sued by a New York student who alleged she overpaid for clothes from the brand's "Conscious Collection" under the guise the products were more eco-friendly than they actually were.

The first two Suidoken games are getting surprise remasters in 2023 https://briefnews.eu/the-first-two-suidoken-games-are-getting-surprise-remasters-in-2023/ https://briefnews.eu/the-first-two-suidoken-games-are-getting-surprise-remasters-in-2023/#respond Fri, 16 Sep 2022 15:45:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-first-two-suidoken-games-are-getting-surprise-remasters-in-2023/ Konami just announced Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, a package that will modernize two classic PlayStation RPGs. It will launch in 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

The first two Suikoden games were released in 1995 and 1998, respectively, for the original PlayStation. They were then made available for other platforms like the Sega Saturn and PC. Both games were also rereleased once before for the PlayStation Portable in a bundle called Genso Suikoden I & II in 2006. However, this version was never released outside of Japan.

Heroes in Suidoken stand in a canyon.

The remake has enhanced visuals with improved lighting, cloud effects, and shadow animations. The art direction has been redesigned, breathing new life into the original’s style. The character portraits have also been redrawn and updated in HD by Junko Kawano, the artist who originally designed the characters in 1995.

More environmental sound effects have been added that weren’t present in the original version, including running water, wind, insect noises, and running footsteps. There are also some new quality-of-life features such as a dialogue log, auto-battle functionality, and double-speed battle capability.

The last mainline entry for this franchise was Suikoden V in 2006 for the PlayStation 2, and the last spinoff game was Gensō Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century for the PlayStation Portable, the latter of which was released in 2012 and never left Japan. Since then, the series has been dormant. However, Kawano, along with fellow series creator Yoshitaka Murayama, teamed up in 2020 to form the studio Rabbit & Bear to develop a spiritual successor to Suikoden called Eiyuden Chronicle.

2008 Horror Hit The Strangers Is Getting A Remake https://briefnews.eu/2008-horror-hit-the-strangers-is-getting-a-remake/ https://briefnews.eu/2008-horror-hit-the-strangers-is-getting-a-remake/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 21:30:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/2008-horror-hit-the-strangers-is-getting-a-remake/

In horror news that makes you go “hmm,” apparently 2008’s terrifying home invasion movie “The Strangers” is getting a remake. Deadline is reporting (via Fangoria) that a new “Strangers” movie is not only going to happen but that it’s already in production. And while the idea of messing with such a heart-poundingly intense original film might raise a few eyebrows, plot details about the new film honestly don’t sound like a direct remake so much as a continuation of the film’s universe a la 2018’s “The Strangers: Prey at Night.”

The new version of “The Strangers” will apparently feature “Riverdale” star Madelaine Petsch, AKA Cheryl Blossom, which is an inspired bit of casting if you ask me. Petsch will star alongside “Teen Wolf” actor Froy Gutierrez and “The Kings of Summer” actor Gabriel Basso. The film has already set a director, too: Renny Harlin, who’s helmed films as varying as “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,” “Deep Blue Sea,” and “Devil’s Pass.” Harlin didn’t direct the first two “Strangers” films, but apparently, there could be more on the horizon: Deadline is reporting that this will be the start of a trilogy, something producer Roy Lee hinted at last month.

A Whole Strangers Trilogy?

The new film will reportedly follow a woman and her boyfriend as they drive cross-country to the Pacific Northwest to start a new life. When their car breaks down in Oregon, they stop at an Airbnb and end up tormented by three anonymous masked figures. In the first “Strangers” film, which starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, the trio of near-silent killers targeted a couple whose relationship was unraveling after a failed proposal. That film took place at a rural summer home, while “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” a bloody and delightful sequel that shared little DNA with the original, saw the killers hunting down a family at a mobile home park.

“The Strangers” polarized audiences upon release thanks to its slow burn approach and frightening moments that felt less like jump scares and more like a deranged game of I Spy, but many consider the “true story”-inspired flick to be one of the most unnerving horror movies out there. For what it’s worth, it’s the only movie I know of that’s made multiple friends of mine scared to leave their homes. While I don’t think the original film is due for a straight remake, it sounds like this won’t be the same story, so I’m eager to see what Harlin, Petsch, and the rest of the team make of it.

My one fervent hope is that no matter how many “Strangers” movies we get, we aren’t given a backstory for the mask-wearing sadists who drive the films’ actions. After all, very few moments in horror are more frightening than their answer to Tyler’s fateful question, “Why are you doing this?” in the first film. “Because you were home,” they answer simply.

The remake of “The Strangers” does not yet have a release date.

The Morning After: Marvel is getting the ‘Pokémon Go’ treatment https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-marvel-is-getting-the-pokemon-go-treatment/ https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-marvel-is-getting-the-pokemon-go-treatment/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 11:39:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-marvel-is-getting-the-pokemon-go-treatment/ I wasn’t sure Marvel could shoehorn its characters and stories anywhere else, beyond all the movies, TV shows, games and toys, but now it wants you thinking about those heroes wherever you go. It’s teamed up with Pokémon Go developer Niantic to create an augmented reality mobile game launching next year. In Marvel World of Heroes, you can create your own superhero in a Marvel game for the first time, according to Niantic.

You patrol your neighborhood to thwart crimes, take on missions and fend off interdimensional threats and supervillains. You’ll be able to team up with friends, as well as the likes of Spider-Man, Captain America and Wolverine. It seems you can also visit multiple alternate realities — in a virtual sense, anyway.

Niantic hopes to replicate the magic of Pokemon Go, something it’s struggled with so far, across properties like Harry Potter and Pikmin. You can register your interest on the game’s site now.

NASA has completed a critical repair of its next-generation Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. On Friday, engineers replaced the leaky seal that forced the agency to scrub its most recent attempt to launch Artemis 1. With the new gaskets in place, NASA plans to conduct a fueling test to verify they’re working as intended. In the dry run, engineers will attempt to load the SLS with all 736,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and oxygen it would need during a regular flight. NASA now hopes to complete the test as early as September 17th.

Used cars are getting cheaper. Here’s a breakdown of how prices have moved from Scions to Jeeps. https://briefnews.eu/used-cars-are-getting-cheaper-heres-a-breakdown-of-how-prices-have-moved-from-scions-to-jeeps/ https://briefnews.eu/used-cars-are-getting-cheaper-heres-a-breakdown-of-how-prices-have-moved-from-scions-to-jeeps/#respond Sun, 11 Sep 2022 13:30:15 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/used-cars-are-getting-cheaper-heres-a-breakdown-of-how-prices-have-moved-from-scions-to-jeeps/ Used car lot
A used car lot is shown Friday, June 10, 2022, in Salt Lake City.

  • Pre-owned car prices sank 4% in August to the lowest since last September, according to Manheim data.
  • Waning demand will make for "an absolute vortex of deflation" at used car lots, one expert tweeted.
  • But while prices are broadly falling, some manufacturers' cars are still proving to be solid investments.

Nick Huber has been eyeing a used SUV to trade in for his 2017 minivan. This week, he tweeted that the SUV's price has fallen to $ 40,000 from $ 75,000 in just six months.

For Huber and anyone else who's been putting off buying a used car, the market is looking sunnier.

Pre-owned vehicles were among the biggest sources of pandemic-era inflation as semiconductor shortages halted the production of new vehicles and pushing used car prices in line with — or even above — the cost of a brand-new vehicle.

That phenomenon is now going the way of Zoom happy hours, near-empty flights, and wiping down groceries. Used vehicle prices tumbled 4% in August alone, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index. The print shows prices at the lowest level since September and places the index roughly 11% below its January peak.

The measure tracks a bucket of used vehicles on a mileage, mix, and seasonally adjusted basis, giving a holistic look at the used-car market.

The broad index only captures a birds-eye view of the market. Used-car prices vary dramatically, and as the market cools off, certain models are outperforming while others' values are in freefall.

The winners and losers of the highly irregular used-car market

Used Wagoneer models — Jeep's luxury sub-brand — are tumbling the fastest, with values down roughly 2% in just the last month, according to CarGurus. The models' relative youth likely contributed to the drop, as Wagoneer SUVs have only been in production since 2021. Yet the swift decline signals the flipping culture that dominated the used-car market in 2021 is no longer viable.

Scion, meanwhile, can't blame its plummeting values on its new entry to the market. The Toyota sub-brand was discontinued in 2016, and its used cars are faring about as well in the current market. Used Scions' values slid 1.9% over the past month, second only to Wagoneer and tripling the average decline across the entire market.

Despite the drop in the Scion sub-brand, Toyotas overall are doing a much better job at holding their value. Prices for pre-owned models are only down 0.04% from the month-ago period, handily outperforming the rest of the market.

That strength may not last. Reddit user u/PreMixYZ shared his shopping story in the UsedCars subreddit earlier in September and noted that even used Toyota RAV4s, one of the most popular cars on sale today, are suffering in the weakening market. Three days after being told the price of a used RAV4 was "non-negotiable," PreMixYZ received a call from the dealership offering $ 1,500 off the seemingly unwavering price.

"I really wanted to say, "So you are saying that your guy was lying to me?" they added.

Cars holding their value best generally fall in two camps: ultra-luxurious sedans and affordable manufacturers. Used Bentley and Rolls-Royce prices are up 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively, likely bolstered by their scarcity and wealthy households' strong investment returns through the pandemic.

And on the other end of the market, pre-owned Hyundais, Hondas, and Mazdas are holding on to their value. Prices for the three manufacturers' used cars are up between 0.3% to 0.9% over the last month, defying the industry-wide slump as Americans seek out affordable and economical vehicles.

Even those dealers are adapting to the shifting market, however.

"When I was shopping for a new car a few months ago, I called EVERY Honda, Mazda, and Subaru dealer in California and found some dealers from each brand with no markup," Reddit user u/EG-111 said in an August 25 comment. "Hang in there, I think things will eventually go back to normal."

The car-market correction has a long way to go

Anecdotes from other car shoppers suggest there are some large discounts to be had in the months ahead.

For those on the brink of shopping for a pre-owned car, patience will be rewarded. Prices could continue to fall 1% to 2% every week, and the end of the year could yield the best deals before a potential rebound, an industry expert and newsletter writer who solely goes by CarDealershipGuy said in a Wednesday tweet.

Used-car lots are on the losing end of the price cuts, and they're already bracing for a steeper decline, Ophir Gottlieb, CEO of Capital Market Laboratories, tweeted Friday.

"Speak to any (very) large used car dealer and you will hear the same," he said. "An absolute vortex of deflation is coming to used car prices."
