An investigation by Kaiser Health News into thousands of recent drug recalls reveals a frightening record of medicines in the US being tainted with dangerous bacteria, mold, glass shards, rubber bits, cancer-causing chemicals, mysterious powders, and worrying metal particles. There were also cases of medications with too much or too little ingredients—or simply the wrong ingredients entirely.

Digging deeper, the investigation discovered that a startling number of the drug makers who issued the recalls had received an all-clear from Food and Drug Administration inspectors within a year of their recalls. FDA records and lawsuits suggest that drug makers can easily game the inspection system, mislead inspectors, lie about where drugs are manufactured, or outright sabotage inspections.

For instance, FDA enforcement documents reveal that employees at one drug-making facility in Japan stood “shoulder-to-shoulder” to physically block an FDA inspector from looking around, and another drug maker in India faked a worker strike and cut the lights at its facility to foil an inspection. In a different case, whistleblowers alleged in a lawsuit that Gilead Sciences told the FDA that it used a facility in South Korea to make an ingredient for HIV drugs Truvada and Atripla, but in reality, Gilead was using an unregistered facility in China. The civil suit claimed that the Chinese ingredient contained “glass-like shards,” “black rubber-like particles,” “plastic-like particles,” “small stone or pebble-like particles” and “metal shards.”

Do You Know What Germs Are Lurking In Your Home? https://briefnews.eu/do-you-know-what-germs-are-lurking-in-your-home/ https://briefnews.eu/do-you-know-what-germs-are-lurking-in-your-home/#respond Mon, 01 Oct 2018 14:05:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/?p=228541 Article was originally published at MattressOnline.

Did you know?

  • 64% of people wait a month or more to wash their hand towels, meaning that they might as well be washing their hands in the toilet.
  • People that don’t clean their phone are twice as likely to suffer from outbreaks of spots than those who do once a week.
  • Only 17% of women wash their makeup brushes although it’s recommended to do so once a week.
  • You could be brushing your teeth with faeces.
  • Black spots on your shower curtain contain literally billions of mould spores.
  • An infestation of one female bed bug can rise to 5000 in 6 months

It’s that time of year again. Spring cleaning season is officially underway and many items around the home need more than a dust or a quick wipe.

Germs are so small they can be hiding in plain sight and while most bacteria we come across every day is relatively harmless, there are some nasty ones to watch out as they can affect our health. These include E. coli, staph and mould.

Cleaning thoroughly and often is the only way to ensure these bacteria are kept at bay.

You might be surprised at the germs that lurk in some of your most often used household items.

You could be brushing your teeth with faeces

If you flush the toilet with the lid open, particles of water, urine and faeces can travel up to six feet. So, if your toothbrush is anywhere near the toilet, you’ll probably want to find it a safer space.

Keep your toothbrush over six feet away from your toilet. You should also change your toothbrush at least every 3-4 months.

change-toothbrush

While most people do change their toothbrush with some level of regularity, a worrying 21% of people wait until they become unusable before getting a new one.

Wiping your face with a dirty towel is like flushing your head down the toilet

Your hand towel could be harbouring many germs including e. coli and those found in faeces. These germs multiply fast in the warm, damp environment and if you don’t wash or change your towel every couple of days, wiping your face or hands with it is like flushing your head down the toilet.

The only thing you can do is to wash your hand towel, regularly. In fact, you should be washing it every few uses.

Sadly, 64% of people wait a month or more to wash their hand towels.

Black spots on your shower curtain are literally billions of mould spores

Mould spores can cause upper respiratory irritation and an allergic reaction such as sneezing, a runny nose, wheezing, red eyes and a skin rash. You should be cleaning your shower and shower door or curtain at least once a week. If you’re seeing tiny bits of black here and there, that’s actually millions or billions of mould spores.

Our study found that almost 2/3 of people don’t machine wash their shower curtains at all.

Mobile phone on a table

Your mobile phone probably has 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat

It’s in your pocket, your bag and against your face. It’s probably been dropped on the floor, in your car, even perhaps down the toilet. So, it’s no wonder that scientists at the University of Arizona found that mobile phones have 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats. As our survey has shown, it can also cause bad breakouts of spots.

Using headphones to make calls rather than holding your phone next to your skin is one simple and obvious way to reduce phone to skin contact.

You should also regularly, perhaps even daily, wipe your phone with a microfiber cleaning cloth.

Getting spots? It could be your makeup brushes

Makeup brushes go straight on your face every day. They can pick up skin cells, sweat and of course, the left-over makeup from the day before. This dirt can cause spots and even infections like conjunctivitis. Makeup brushes need to be washed on a weekly basis.

Makeup brushes need to be washed on a weekly basis. You probably know this, but do you actually do it?

Only 17% of women surveyed said that they clean their makeup brushes once a week, with 44% admitting they never clean them.

Your dog could be fetching you tapeworm

Your pets bring the outdoors indoors, into your sitting room, on the furniture and if you let them sleep in your bed, on your pillows and duvet covers too. Animals are a common trigger for those with asthma and homes with pets typically carry around 50% more different types of bacteria than those without.

Making sure your pet, especially their derriere is clean will avoid some of the nastier bugs entering your home. That includes tapeworm, fleas and Cryptosporidium, which can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses.

An infestation of one female bed bug can rise to 5000 in 6 months

Bed bugs are tricky. They can live in and around your bed and in places you wouldn’t normally think to look.  In wooden headboards, cracks in the wall, piles of laundry and even smoke alarms or the head of a screw.

They can travel up to 20 feet from their hiding place to feed and are now developing thicker skins, which makes them more resistant to insecticides. There are no quick fixes in getting rid of them either, so prevention is better than cure. And although they are not known to carry disease, they do bite and it’s the bites that can become infected if they aren’t kept clean and dry until healed.

Carpet in a room

Dust mites are everywhere and you’re breathing in their poo

A dust mite produces an average of 20 faecal deposits each day. They are so light that any movement in the room can cause a stir and make them rise in the air. We then breathe them in and a protein found in their faeces is what causes allergic reactions.

Use a damp mop or cloth to remove dust, never use dry material as this can stir up mite allergens. A dehumidifier that maintains relative humidity at about 50% or below can also be a big help. On top of this, washing all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water will help deter dust mites.

Kitchen sponge on a bench

Your kitchen sponge could have more bacteria than a toilet seat

E. coli is usually found in meat, unpasteurised milk and fresh produce, so is more commonly found in the kitchen. It can cause intestinal infection including diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting.

As the dirtiest room in the house, everything in the kitchen needs to be washed after every use. The sink and surfaces should be washed with disinfectant between each meal. The cutlery drawer should be washed out once a week and cupboards should be emptied and cleaned once a fortnight.

Should your home carry a health warning? Household items that contain the most germs https://briefnews.eu/should-your-home-carry-a-health-warning-household-items-that-contain-the-most-germs/ https://briefnews.eu/should-your-home-carry-a-health-warning-household-items-that-contain-the-most-germs/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 08:42:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/should-your-home-carry-a-health-warning-household-items-that-contain-the-most-germs/

Plastic ducks may look appealing but after the bathwater has been emptied and the children are tucked up in bed they are still hard at work – incubating generations of germs.

Disturbingly, scientists have discovered that the inside of some bath toys are contaminated with up to 9.5 million bugs per square centimetre, putting children at risk of eye, ear and stomach infections when they squeeze the toys or play with them at bath-time.

This so-called “dense growth” of “slimy films” is fuelled by humidity, soap, sweat and – unsurprisingly where small children are concerned – urine in bathwater.

If you find that worrying, take a look at these other surprises!

CHOPPING BOARDS

It is unsettling to consider but the average chopping board has 200 times more faecal bacteria than a toilet seat with an average bacteria count of 24,250 per square centimetre.

This is due to the tiny grooves in the cutting surface that harbour germs from animals’ internal organs which can be transferred from raw meat.

The solution: soak plastic boards in two teaspoons of bleach and four litres of water for an hour.

For wooden boards use four tablespoons of bleach and four litres of water.

TOOTHBRUSHES

In an unbrushed mouth there can be as many germs as a dirty bathroom floor.

When you brush your teeth some of this oral bacteria – together with food debris – is transferred to the bristles of your toothbrush which become nesting grounds for bacteria colonies.

Perhaps worse is what happens to your toothbrush when you flush with the toilet seat open due to the “airborne plume” which is propelled upwards into the bathroom by the force of the flush.

The solution: put the seat down when flushing and sanitise your toothbrush by leaving the heads in mouthwash.

CARPETS

The average person sheds about 1.5 million dead skin cells every hour, many of which end up on carpets.

Here they combine with food particles, pet hair, pollen and outdoor material transferred from shoes to form a smorgasbord for the bacteria that thrive in our centrally heated homes.

About 31,000 bacteria live in each square centimetre of carpet (nearly 700 times more than on your toilet seat).

The solution: hire a company to deep clean your carpets at least once a year.

SMARTPHONES

In a 2013 study British researchers swabbed 30 tablets, 30 phones and an office toilet seat.

The tablets had up to 600 units per swab of staphylococcus and phones up to 140, compared with fewer than 20 units for the loo seat.

It is estimated three in four of us use smartphones while in the toilet at work, increasing the risk of contamination.

Given this, perhaps it’s not surprising that used office teabags can harbour 17 times more germs than a toilet seat.

The solution: wash your hands and clean your phone.

WASHING MACHINES

An underwear load can transfer at least 100 million diarrhoea-causing E.coli to washing machines, where they thrive in the warm and moist conditions and can contaminate freshly washed laundry.

The solution: At least once a month pour two cups of bleach into the detergent compartment and run empty on the hottest cycle before wiping dry.

Train travel: This weird trick could stop you catching germs on a train https://briefnews.eu/train-travel-this-weird-trick-could-stop-you-catching-germs-on-a-train/ https://briefnews.eu/train-travel-this-weird-trick-could-stop-you-catching-germs-on-a-train/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 05:12:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/train-travel-this-weird-trick-could-stop-you-catching-germs-on-a-train/

Train travel can be inevitable during the busy Christmas period, when rushing off to see friends and family elsewhere in the country.

However, it also poses a much greater risk of getting sick with a cold or flu when around ill passengers, says an expert.

“This is a key time for the onward transmission of colds, as people are closer together for longer periods of time,” says Dr Gary McLean, who is an honorary research fellow in the Airway Disease Infection Section of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London.

However, there is a insider trick on how to avoid catching the viruses which cause these colds, and it’s as simple as where you stand.

If you stand to the side of a passenger you suspect to be sick, you are much less likely to catch their germs, says Dr McClean.

This is because, if that passenger sneezes, standing sideways rather than in the direct path of the sneeze means the virus is less likely to travel towards you.

“Sneezes and coughs can travel a large distance very quickly, so I would say that being sideways from an infected person is safer rather than directly opposite,” he adds.

However, you may want to take more extreme measures, as one study found a single sneeze can infect up to 150 commuters in five minutes.

“If they sneeze or cough try to minimise inhalation for a few seconds,” he recommends, with regards to that nearby ill person on the train.

“Try to avoid contacting anything that they have and then touching your nose or eyes.”

After travelling on public transport, you should wash your hands with soap and warm water.

You could also consider travelling with a bottle of antibacterial hand gel, according to the expert’s advice.

Train travel services will be disrupted during the festive period of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2017.

No train lines are currently running on Christmas Day 2017 itself, as confirmed by a number of companies including Virgin Trains, Thameslink and London Underground.

However, some services will be running on Christmas Eve so people can travel to visit their family and friends on these days.

An up to date list of trains travelling on Christmas Eve can be found here for those who need advice.

You will NEVER guess the WORST place for germs in your house (it's not the toilet!) https://briefnews.eu/you-will-never-guess-the-worst-place-for-germs-in-your-house-its-not-the-toilet/ https://briefnews.eu/you-will-never-guess-the-worst-place-for-germs-in-your-house-its-not-the-toilet/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2017 11:32:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-will-never-guess-the-worst-place-for-germs-in-your-house-its-not-the-toilet/

All are among a list naming the eight ‘germiest’ hotspots in a typical household alongside towels, sponges and other everyday items.

Toilets, kitchen worktops and other notorious bacteria breeding grounds regularly get blitzed during household chores but it is the less obvious places that require more attention, revealed the report.

The list was compiled by the domestic gurus of the Good Housekeeping Institute, along with the best methods of cleaning the offenders.

Its report said: “Few of us have time to clean everything we should every week but ignore these everyday items at your peril.”

Worryingly, the hygiene hotspots include toothbrush bristles which allow bacteria to accumulate both from the owner’s mouth along with airborne germs from the nearby loo.

The key to keeping them clean includes simple habits such as closing the toilet seat when flushing or sanitising the bristles by leaving the heads in mouthwash for no longer than 15 minutes.

Remote controls, as well as other electronics such as keyboards and laptop screens can be a magnet for bacteria transferring from grubby hands and so too are towels, dishclothes and sponges.

Perhaps most surprisingly, handbags join pet beds, carpets and the kitchen sink in the list.

GHI’s report added: “Just think of all the places you put your handbag down; restaurants, toilet cubicles, train floors!”

THE EIGHT ‘GERMIEST’ PLACES IN THE HOME – AND HOW TO CLEAN THEM – ARE:

1. Handbags. Wipe down once a week with a damp cloth using water and a small amount of liquid soap. For deep cleans, get a specialist product.

2. Electronics and accessories: Use a finely woven microfibre cloth sprayed very lightly with antibacterial surface cleaner or dry depending on manufacturer’s instructions. Work gently round button.

3. Toothbrushes. Close toilet seat when flushing, airdry as far away from the loo as possible. Soak toothbrush heads in mouthwash for a maximum of 15 minutes.

4. Carpets. Vacuuming won’t keep it germ free so spot clean using a domestic carpet shampoo machine – they can be rented – and a shampoo than include a protector such as Scotchguard.

5. Bathroom towels. Dry thoroughly and quickly after use to stop bacteria breeding by spreading them out on a stand, rack or free standing airer.

6. Pet bed. Run through the washing machine on a high temperature but make sure you clean the machine afterwards by adding a cup of bleach to the detergent drawer and running on 60 degrees on an empty wash.

7. Kitchen sink. Don’t just swirl with hot water. At least twice a week, and after preparing raw food which is laden with pathogens, spray the basin and taps with an antibacterial cleaner, leave for ten minutes, then rinse.

8. Kitchen sponges and dishcloths. Clean in hot soapy water then soak them in a disinfectant for ten minutes. Some clothes and sponge scourers can be machine washed.

IllumiBowl’s latest toilet light also kills germs https://briefnews.eu/illumibowls-latest-toilet-light-also-kills-germs/ https://briefnews.eu/illumibowls-latest-toilet-light-also-kills-germs/#respond Mon, 24 Apr 2017 01:08:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/illumibowls-latest-toilet-light-also-kills-germs/

IllumiBowl’s motion-activated, multi-color toilet night light may have seemed like a silly idea when it first launched, but don’t laugh — it’s a practical solution if you’d rather not flick on the regular bathroom light (and momentarily blind yourself) just to do your business. And it appears that enough people bought into the concept to warrant a sequel. The company is crowdfunding a second-generation IllumiBowl light that adds anti-germ cleaning to the mix. The new gadget includes a diode whose “highly focused” non-ultraviolet light kills bacteria without hurting humans. This doesn’t mean that your toilet will suddenly be sterile, but it may set your mind at ease in between bowl scrubbing sessions.

The new design also touts twice the battery life by moving from AAA to AA batteries, and it sports a slightly slicker design that looks more at home next to your porcelain throne. As it stands, the $ 10 backing price (half off the retail cost) is low enough that it might be worth a look. The project is already fully funded as of this writing, so you should get your “aim here” lighting as soon as July.

Kill germs and the darkness with the updated IllumiBowl toilet light https://briefnews.eu/kill-germs-and-the-darkness-with-the-updated-illumibowl-toilet-light/ https://briefnews.eu/kill-germs-and-the-darkness-with-the-updated-illumibowl-toilet-light/#respond Fri, 21 Apr 2017 02:17:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kill-germs-and-the-darkness-with-the-updated-illumibowl-toilet-light/ After the lights go out and it’s time for bed, there is nothing worse than having to use the bathroom lights again. Rather than blindly looking for the toilet, IllumiBowl created the very first toilet bowl night light back in 2014. Now, three years later, the company has improved on its design to create the IllumiBowl Anti-Germ.

The biggest addition to the device is an anti-germ diode. By using light waves that are 470 nanometers, the IllumiBowl Anti-Germ targets the most common germs while remaining completely safe for humans. It’s a medical-grade technology typically found in hospitals.

Every two minutes, the diode lights up for 15 seconds to kill off any new bacteria. Once a day, the light shines for 8 straight minutes to kill off whatever remains. After six minutes of exposure, the energy causes significant damage to the photoreceptors in bacteria. It’s all done without any harmful UV-C rays.

Other aspects of the design have been updated and refined since IllumiBowl’s original launch. Instead of AAA batteries, the Anti-Germ model will feature AA batteries for three times the power. The added juice should also keep IllumiBowl lasting nearly twice as long. While the body of the device has increased slightly to accommodate the extra power, it still retains a sleek design that allows it to go largely unnoticed in the bathroom.

IllumiBowl fits any toilet thrown at it with three brightness levels and eight colors patterns to choose from. A motion and light sensor ensures batteries are only used when needed.

The IllumiBowl Anti-Germ is currently available for pre-order through Kickstarter. For every $ 10 pledge, supporters will be supplied with one device for use within their own home. Shipments are scheduled to start in July.
