Jewish-only section of Germany's right-wing AfD raises eyebrows https://briefnews.eu/not-kosher-jewish-only-section-of-germanys-right-wing-afd-raises-eyebrows/ https://briefnews.eu/not-kosher-jewish-only-section-of-germanys-right-wing-afd-raises-eyebrows/#respond Thu, 27 Sep 2018 04:09:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/not-kosher-jewish-only-section-of-germanys-right-wing-afd-raises-eyebrows/ The anti-migrant Alternative for Germany is routinely accused of anti-Semitic views, but its Jewish supporters have just subverted expectation by forming a faith-based group within the party. Some Jews are not OK with that.

The group of Jews within the AfD is aiming to hold its inaugural meeting in the German city of Offenbach on October 7, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing a letter written to the paper.

The Jewish group will be an addition to the already existing Christian section of the AfD – the leader of which maintains that despite widespread claims, the party is not anti-Semitic.

“That doesn’t apply at all to what we are. The AfD is not an anti-Semitic party; we do not tolerate any anti-Semitism in the party. If that arises, if we notice it, then these people are thrown out,” Joachim Kuhs said, according to Deutsche Welle.

Still, the report seems to be a rare instance of “AfD” and “Jews” not appearing as two opposing sides in the media, which have often accused the party of having neo-Nazi links, harboring anti-Semitic views, and downplaying the horrors of the Holocaust. In June, AfD co-leader Alexander Gauland referred to the Nazi era as a “speck of bird s**t in over 1,000 years of successful German history.” Just last month, a local AfD leader came under fire after referring to man who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler as a “coward” and a “traitor.”

Dimitri Schulz, a founding member of the planned Jewish AfD section, agrees with Kuhs, telling DPA news agency that the AfD “is the only party in Germany that makes anti-Semitism by Muslims a topic without trivializing it.”

Not everyone is convinced, however – including many Jews in Germany who can’t quite wrap their heads around why anyone from their faith would associate themselves with the AfD.

Among those angered by the news are members of the Jewish Students Union of Germany, one of whom told AFP that the party is “one of the biggest threats to Jewish… life in Germany.”

“The AfD is not getting a kosher certificate from us,” said the leader of the group, Dalia Grinfeld, who said her group is urging all Jews in Germany to join a protest in Offenbach to rally against the creation of the AfD’s Jewish section.

The row comes amid a rise in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany, with police data showing that such attacks rose by 10.7 percent in the first half of 2018, compared to the same period last year.

Germany's Social Democrats vote to have formal coalition talks with Merkel's CDU https://briefnews.eu/germanys-social-democrats-vote-to-have-formal-coalition-talks-with-merkels-cdu/ https://briefnews.eu/germanys-social-democrats-vote-to-have-formal-coalition-talks-with-merkels-cdu/#respond Sun, 21 Jan 2018 22:32:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germanys-social-democrats-vote-to-have-formal-coalition-talks-with-merkels-cdu/

Germany’s Social Democrat Party (SPD) headed by Martin Schulz has voted to start formal coalition talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU). SPD delegates voted 362 to 279, with one abstention, to conduct further negotiations with a view to forming a government. Following the unprecedented performance of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) far-right political party during the country’s general election (attracting 12.6 percent of the vote), the European powerhouse has been in political limbo. If the SPD-CDU talks are successful, a new government could be formed by March, some six months after September’s Bundestag election.

15 Powerful Messages For Germany's Far-Right Party https://briefnews.eu/15-powerful-messages-for-germanys-far-right-party/ https://briefnews.eu/15-powerful-messages-for-germanys-far-right-party/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 10:40:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/15-powerful-messages-for-germanys-far-right-party/

On Sunday night, people from all over Germany gathered in protests at the polls closed and it became clear that Germany’s Alternative For Germany party had come in third place. The AfD is projected to get around 13% of the vote, the largest percentage gained by a far-right party since the Nazi’s 43.91 percent in 1933. The largest protest against the AfD was in Berlin, where close to a thousand people demonstrated late into the night in front of the building where the AfD held their election party.

We asked them to write a message to the AfD and this is what happened.

Wartburg Castle houses fascinating secrets about Germany's past https://briefnews.eu/wartburg-castle-houses-fascinating-secrets-about-germanys-past/ https://briefnews.eu/wartburg-castle-houses-fascinating-secrets-about-germanys-past/#respond Sat, 01 Jul 2017 12:04:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wartburg-castle-houses-fascinating-secrets-about-germanys-past/

Wartburg CastleGETTY

Wartburg Castle was for years hidden by the Iron Curtain

After passing over the drawbridge and walking beneath its stone-arched gateway, we arrive in a perfect black-and-white illustration – the dark timbers of 15th-century buildings stand out against white walls, decorative ironwork and solid black cannon, silhouetted against the snow as white doves with jet black eyes flutter to and fro.

The castle, overlooking the town of Eisenach and for so many years hidden behind the Iron Curtain, can be read like a picture book.

From the story of its saintly 13th-century “people’s princess” to the launch of a religious revolution, it has much to tell.

We start in the oldest remaining part of this Unesco World Heritage site – the 12th-century sandstone palace.

It was a major statement on the part of the Count as 40,000 tons of rock, made desirable by Southern European palace-builders, were dragged up the hill by ox cart.

In the Ladies’ Chamber, the vaulted stone architecture has been covered in a sparkling 1900s glass mosaic telling the tale of the most famous female inhabitant of Wartburg.

A shiny, bright image shows two youngsters in a richly ornamented bed surrounded by courtly figures.

Princess Elizabeth of Hungary was betrothed to the heir to the throne of Thuringia, Louis IV, at the age of four and travelled to Wartburg to be raised by her intended’s family.

They married when she was 14 and he was 20. Elizabeth was very much in love with her husband and he was with her.

She used the family wealth (mostly with his approval) to help the poor and built a hospital beside the castle which she visited daily.

Unfortunately, Louis joined the Sixth Crusade and subsequently died of a fever, leaving behind the 20-year-old mother of three.

St Louis and St ElizabethALAMY

Louis and Elizabeth married when he was 20 and she was 14

His relatives apparently took exception to Elizabeth’s dispersal of court property to the poor and banished her from Wartburg.

She died aged 24 but was quickly canonised and is still famous across the Catholic world as Saint Elizabeth.

Elizabeth reappears in colourful painted murals that were part of a 19th-century restoration championed by Germany’s national poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The centrepiece is the Singers Hall, where every inch is covered in neo-Gothic patterns and mock-medieval figures, including those depicting a minstrels’ competition.

Wagner was inspired to write an opera about the Wartburg song contest and the hall still hosts summer concerts. In the Castle Museum we meet Wartburg’s other famous resident, Martin Luther.

Here hangs his wedding portrait painted by Cranach, the leading artist of the day, to try to persuade the world it was okay for this ex-monk to marry an ex-nun (not everyone was convinced).

My favourite object in the museum is Luther’s gilded silver travelling spoon. Travelling spoons of the time were meant to contain a piece of unicorn horn to protect against food poisoning.

Unable to get hold of unicorn, Luther had a piece of elk bone. Passing through the Donkey Room (donkeys brought up all supplies and even today carry children to the castle in summer) we arrive in Luther’s study.

In this rough-wood panelled room, in the winter of 1551-2, Luther sat with his feet propped up on the whale vertebra that still sits on the stone floor and translated the bible into German.

He wanted people to be able to read it for themselves without the intervention of the Church. Luther had to merge 18 German dialects to create one German language for his book. From this little room he launched a religious revolution and the modern German language.

After heading back into the black-and-white courtyard, moments later you are seated in the elegant large-windowed restaurant of the five-star Romantik Hotel Auf Wartburg, tucked into the hillside beneath the castle walls.

We look up to Luther’s study on one side and over a panorama of thick Thuringian forest on the other. This was the summer playground of East Germany, rich in wildlife and full of walking trails, where the politburo had their summer houses.

As it’s winter, we are happy to enjoy the scenery from indoors while sipping glühwein. The hotel’s Festival Hall echoes the castle in its fairy tale décor, not least St George slaying the dragon – the patron saint of England and apparently patron saint of Wartburg’s nearest town, Eisenach too.

40,000 tons of rock were used to build Wartburg Castle

At the bottom of the hill is a pretty, historic centre of traditional half-timbered and pastel-coloured houses. In one of the oldest – a glowing orange 15th-century wattle and daub home – is the Bachhaus Museum.

Musician Bach was born in Eisenach – possibly in this house. Certainly, members of his family lived here. Inside we are treated to a short concert on period keyboards, including a little golden chamber organ on which Bach himself is said to have played.

We see records from his schooldays and discover that all town musicians became known as “Bachs” as so many of that family were musical.

There is plenty more to explore just down the road in Weimar, home of the early Bauhaus, the Weimar Republic, Goethe, an adult Bach and Buchenwald Concentration Camp, while Erfurt boasts one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centres.

But it is Wartburg Castle, looking down like a genial grandfather from its lofty seat, that has the most magical tales to tell.

Germany's booming economy shifts into overdrive https://briefnews.eu/germanys-booming-economy-shifts-into-overdrive/ https://briefnews.eu/germanys-booming-economy-shifts-into-overdrive/#respond Tue, 02 May 2017 15:11:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germanys-booming-economy-shifts-into-overdrive/

Europe’s largest economy, Germany, is seeing trade surge with a sharp increase in demand for goods ‘Made in Germany’ around the world. The rise comes despite protectionist rhetoric from Washington.

In the first two months of 2017, overall German exports rose seven percent on the year to €201.2 billion ($ 219.57 billion). The rise was driven by a broad-based uptick in demand for top quality German products such as cars and machinery.

Trade was also supported by a robust domestic labor market, a growing population and record-low borrowing costs, enabled by the European Central Bank’s loose monetary policy.

Data compiled from the Federal Statistics Office showed that exports to the US, Germany’s most important single export destination after the EU, jumped nine percent in January-February to €17.9 billion. Exports to China stood at €12.6 billion.

The increase in US exports came amid a period of ‘America First’ campaigning, which included threats of broad-based introduction of punitive tariffs on imports through a border adjustment tax.

“We’re very relaxed about this whole debate about Trump and protectionism,” the port manager in Hamburg, Axel Mattern, told Reuters. “If [US President] Mr. Trump doesn’t want to buy German goods anymore because he thinks he can produce everything at home, we’ll just find other buyers.”

Some German companies such as automotive supplier Schlemmer Group are even considering expansion into the United States.

“We plan to open at least one, probably two new production sites in the US,” said the company’s CEO Josef Minster.

Roller-coaster manufacturer Mack Rides says rising protectionism and import tariffs surely would be bad for business as the family-run firm has an export rate of 95 percent. The company is experiencing a sharp upturn in demand from Asia and the Emirates, as well as Europe and the US.

“Even if the US should increase import tariffs, which hopefully will never happen, we’ll be able to easily offset this decline in sales through the fast growing economies in Asia,” said CEO Christian von Elverfeldt.

While high uncertainty is limiting overall private sector investment, some companies are still pushing ahead with investment. A survey by the Ifo institute showed German industrial companies plan to increase investment by 5 percent this year, up from 3 percent in 2016.

Germany's 'Die Astronautin' Competition Is as Badass as it Sounds https://briefnews.eu/germanys-die-astronautin-competition-is-as-badass-as-it-sounds/ https://briefnews.eu/germanys-die-astronautin-competition-is-as-badass-as-it-sounds/#respond Thu, 02 Mar 2017 21:46:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germanys-die-astronautin-competition-is-as-badass-as-it-sounds/

Although it sounds like The Hunger Games in space, Germany’s “Die Astronautin” competition—which means “the astronaut”—seeks to put the first German woman into space. In March 2016, 400 women entered the competition, and yesterday, aerospace recruitment agency HE Space announced it had selected its final six candidates. If the private mission succeeds in securing funding, one of these badass ladies will head up to the International Space Station (ISS) for 10 days in 2020.

By fostering such a large competition, HE hopes Die Astronautin will inspire more girls and women to become interested in spaceflight. “We have shown that Germany’s women have the skills to fly into space,” said Claudia Kessler, CEO of HE Space, in a press statement. “Now we have to prove that the people of Germany believe in the candidates.”

To qualify for Die Astronautin, women had to be German nationals with a degree in engineering or science, between ages 27-37, and in excellent physical condition. Each of the 400 initial candidates were subjected to physical and mental health screenings, narrowing the pool down to just 60 candidates. From there, the pool was reduced to just six.

Among the finalists is Insa Thiele-Eich, daughter of German astronaut Gerhard Thiele, who spent 11 days in space in 2000 on a NASA Space Shuttle Endeavor mission. In an interview with CollectSPACE, the 33-year-old meteorologist said she wasn’t trying to follow in her dad’s footsteps—in fact, when she asked for advice on the competition, he just told her to “stay calm and have fun.”

Like Thiele-Eich, four of the other finalists—Nicola Baumann, Suzanna Randall, Magdalena Pree, and Susanne Peters—have professional experience with aerospace technology. Only one finalist, Lisa Marie Haas, does not, although she is a development engineer on electronic devices. If selected, the mom of two plans to create a program to get kids excited about spaceflight.

In the next phase of competition, two women will ultimately be selected to train for a mission to the ISS in 2020. However, only one will travel to the ISS, and only if the venture raises the $ 30 million it needs to move forward. To that end, HE Space is launching a crowdfunding campaign and seeking corporate sponsorships.

Regardless of who gets picked, the significance of this competition cannot be overstated: Obviously, it will be historic that Germany will finally put a woman into space, since all 11 of its astronauts have been men. But this will also provide scientists an opportunity for scientists to gather information on the physical impacts of spaceflight on women’s bodies, a subject we still know very little about.

In 2014, NASA released its most comprehensive report on how men and women are affected by space—but while 477 male astronauts were studied, just 57 women were analyzed. Since this sample size was so small, the report’s official recommendation was to “select more female astronauts for spaceflight missions.” Yeah, no shit.

In the 10 days Germany’s woman astronaut spends in space, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will examine how microgravity affects her body, specifically her hormonal balance. According to Wired Germany, this information could be useful for eventual missions to Mars.

No matter which two candidates “win” Die Astronautin, this is definitely one giant leap for womankind. Space needs more girl power, anyway.
