THE SHOW | Fosse/Verdon
THE EPISODE | “Where Am I Going?” (May 7, 2019)
THE PERFORMANCE | Fosse/Verdon‘s Gwen Verdon is as great an actress off-stage as she is on it, putting on a brave face and an unshakeable smile no matter what life throws at her. This week, though, she finally reached her breaking point, and Williams — who’s been stellar all season long — topped herself with a heartbreaking, emotionally raw performance.
Gwen had a lot on her mind as she joined her ex Bob for a weekend in the Hamptons: Her best friend Joan had just died, Bob was showing off a new (and much younger) girlfriend, and Gwen was still clinging to the dream of doing Chicago with Bob in their favorite old theater. At first, Gwen was all smiles, but Williams let us see the pain and desperation peeking out around the edges. Once Gwen got a few drinks in her, she pitched her vision for Chicago a little too loudly, and it was almost hard to watch how nakedly needy she was to get Bob to say yes. When Bob finally said no, the claws came out, and Williams was absolutely vicious as Gwen detailed to Bob’s new girlfriend exactly what kind of disappointment she can expect from her new man.
When a devastated Gwen later sang a sad ballad, Williams’ voice was strong, but also laced with vulnerability. And she even found time for a chilling coda, with Gwen admitting a harsh truth: that she values the acting roles Bob gave her just as much as the daughter he gave her. Gwen Verdon is too complex a character to pin down as just one thing, you see — and Williams has masterfully shown us every last shade.
THE PERFORMER | Lauren German
THE SHOW | Lucifer
THE EPISODE | “Somebody’s Been Reading Dante’s Inferno” (May 8, 2019)
THE PERFORMANCE | Although the big question going into Season 4 was about Chloe’s reaction to Lucifer’s true face, little did we suspect that the more powerful material would be born of the finer details — namely, the realization that she is and has been the mighty Devil’s kryptonite.
Yes, Episode 2 gave German a chance to play Chloe’s general curiosity — peppering Lucifer with Qs such as, “Do you keep track [of your kills]? What’s it like in Hell? All those people you tortured, did you enjoy it?” But when he accidentally pricked his finger shortly after surviving an inferno, something raised the detective’s hackles.
“How is it that you walk away from a giant, fiery explosion without a scratch, and right now you are bleeding?!” she asked, German’s face registering both confusion and almost a fear of hearing the answer. Chloe then recalled the times Lucifer had been shot, once by her, yet sustained damage. “Is anything even real with you? Were you trying to make me feel bad? Is this all to make me care about you more?” Then, “How is it that sometimes you get hurt and other times you don’t? What is the difference?”
When Lucifer revealed, “I’m only vulnerable when close to you,” the expression on German’s face conveyed the weight of that connection clicking with Chloe.
Capping German’s performance was an equally intense sequence where a bad guy’s hatchet just barely missed her partner. “If I pushed this, into your chest, it would kill you? Because I’m close to you?” she observed while grazing Luci with the blade. “But you jumped in front of it anyway?” Lucifer avowed he would do so, again and again, while Chloe apologized for so much as nicking him. “I’m sorry,” she whispered — for the drawn blood but also her post-finale behaviors to date.
HONORABLE MENTION | Game of Thrones‘ Jaime Lannister hit a pothole on his road to redemption this week — but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played the scene so wonderfully, we almost forgave his character for abandoning Brienne in the middle of the night. (Almost.) Upon learning that Daenerys & Co. planned to battle Cersei, Jaime chose to flee Winterfell and return to his sister in King’s Landing. “You think I’m a good man?” Jaime bitterly asked a tearful Brienne, before reminding her of the heinous acts he’s committed on Cersei’s behalf. With every syllable that left Coster-Waldau’s mouth, he communicated Jaime’s regret, determination, self-loathing and sadness; there was so much conflict in his voice that even Jaime seemed unsure if he was making the right decision. And though it pained us to see Jaime ride off into the night, Coster-Waldau succeeded in bringing even more complexity to a fascinating character.
HONORABLE MENTION | For nearly 12 seasons on The Big Bang Theory, we’ve watched Leonard’s ice queen of a mother Beverly Hofstadter (the inimitable Christine Baranski) turn a cold shoulder to her son. And for nearly 12 seasons, we’ve watched as Leonard mostly tolerated her maternal indifference. But in this week’s episode — not coincidentally the third-to-last Big Bang ever — all of that pent up pain boiled over, and portrayer Johnny Galecki simply crushed every comedic and dramatic beat of Leonard’s emotional catharsis. When in the episode’s closing minutes Bev extended an olive branch to her son in the form of a genuine hug, Galecki literally rose to the occasion as Leonard sprang to his feet and wrapped his arms around his mother for what felt like the first time. It was the closure he — and more importantly we — needed.
HONORABLE MENTION | Thursday’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger practically served as a second origin story for Tandy Bowen, who began the hour as a powerless prisoner and finished it a fully-empowered beacon of hope — no matter how many walls she had to literally knock down to get there. From Tandy’s heartbreaking interactions with her fellow captives to her desperate attempts to claw her way out from the darkness, Olivia Holt‘s powerful performance further solidified her as one of the MCU’s shining stars. In the end, there was something so satisfying about watching Holt unleash her rage on the motel, taking down any man foolish enough to stand in her way. Come on, a trained ballerina who weaponizes the power of hope to cut down her patriarchal oppressors? It doesn’t get much more badass than that.
Which performance(s) knocked your socks off this week? Tell us in Comments!

Personal data and documents from hundreds of German politicians and public figures including Chancellor Angela Merkel have been published online.Read More

A number of German politicians have been the target of a massive data leak, one that contains extensive amounts of information. The data in question includes email addresses, private correspondence, passwords, phone numbers, work emails and photos, among other information, and those affected reportedly include journalists and celebrities as well as politicians. According to multiple reports, the data was leaked from the Twitter account @_0rbit — which has since been suspended — and the account began sharing the stolen information in December.
The scale of the attack is unprecedented
Mobile phone numbers, addresses, private family conversations, vacation pictures, bills, communications between politicians, work emails etc. were leaked
In most cases, Outlook was hacked, in some cases also Facebook, Twitter etc.#BTleaks— Julian Röpcke (@JulianRoepcke) January 4, 2019
While some communications belonging to German President Angela Merkel were found among the documents, a government spokesperson told The Guardian that no sensitive information linked to Merkel had been leaked. So far, it’s unclear who was behind the incident. Victims appear to include politicians belonging to every major German party except for the far-right Alternative for Germany party.
Security researchers have noted that the information included in the leak was not only large-scale and detailed, but also extensively spread out across a number of sites and mirror links. “Way too much effort went into ensuring that this data would be really hard to take down,” tweeted one researcher.
This data leak has so much data squirrelled away to avoid take downs. It must have required many man hours of uploading.
– 70 mirrors of the download links
– 40 d/l links, each with 3-5 mirrors
– 161 mirrors of data files
Plus the tweets, blog posts, mirrors of mirror links.
— the grugq (@thegrugq) January 4, 2019
It’s also unknown just how those behind the leak obtained the information, but Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security released a statement saying there’s no evidence yet of a successful cyberattack on government networks. “After an initial analysis much evidence points towards the data being obtained through the improper use of login details to cloud services, email accounts or social networks,” the interior minister, Horst Seehofer, said in a statement, according to The Guardian. “Currently nothing points towards the system of the parliament or government having been compromised.”
A Twitter spokesperson told Gizmodo that the company took action against the @_0rbit account after it was brought to Twitter’s attention. “Posting a person’s private information without their express permission is a direct violation of the Twitter rules,” they said. “We also recently updated our rules to prohibit the distribution of any hacked material that contains private information, trade secrets or could put people in harm’s way.”

At least four people, including Syrian and Afghan nationals, have been injured after a man chased people in his car on New Year’s Eve in Germany and attempted to ram the vehicle into them, police said in a statement.
The 50-year-old suspect first started going after pedestrians in the city of Bottrop in west-central Germany, law enforcement announced on Tuesday. He then headed towards the city of Essen, 9km to the south of Bottrop, where he was finally detained.

During the hunt in the latter, he managed to injure at least four people, some of them seriously. Among the victims are Syrian and Afghan nationals.
Police have not ruled out that the perpetrator may have acted on “xenophobic” grounds. There are also reports that he may have mental health issues.
DETAILS TO FOLLOW
]]>
The incident took place on the night of October 14 but the police only issued a detailed report on the matter after all major suspects were detained. The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, attended a disco party at one of the local clubs, where she became acquainted with a Syrian asylum seeker, the police said in a statement.
He bought her a drink and the pair then left the club together, the statement adds. The man is alleged to have then dragged the woman into nearby bushes and raped her. The perpetrator then left his victim in the bushes and returned to the club to “call his friends,” the German Bild daily reports.
The woman was subsequently raped by at least seven other men. According to police, the victim could not resist the assaults and was left “completely defenseless” as she was allegedly “intoxicated” by an unknown substance. German media reported that the drink the Syrian bought her might have contained “knockout drops” or some drugs.
The woman survived the encounter and filed a complaint to the police the next day. In the two weeks following the assault, officers detained seven Syrian nationals, who “were mostly living in the refugee shelters” in and around Freiburg, as well as a German citizen. The investigators also said that they “cannot rule out that other persons were involved” in the incident.
The Syrian suspects are between 19- and 29-years old, while the German is 25, the police said, providing no further details of the suspects’ identities. “Almost all the… suspects have been previously known to police,” the statement said, without revealing the exact nature of their previous misdemeanors.
The incident has once again fueled anti-immigrant sentiment in Germany, which has accepted more than a million refugees and asylum seekers since the 2015 refugee crisis, sparking resentment among some parts of the population.
“It is apparently a sheer coincidence that the particularly multicultural Freiburg hits the headlines again and again because of the particularly brutal sex crimes,” one person sarcastically wrote on Twitter. It is indeed not the first such incident in the western German city. Back in 2016, Freiburg was shocked by the death of Maria Ladenburger, a 19-year-old medical student, who was raped and drowned by an Afghan asylum seeker.
Other people were seemingly shocked by the brazenness of the crime. “A [rapist] would ‘usually’ quickly sneak away [being] ashamed of the rape. But this Syrian had also called his buddies. Who could even understand that?” another person wrote in a tweet.
"Normalerweise" müsste sich ein Mann nach einer Vergewaltigung doch schnell und beschämt davonschleichen. Aber dieser #Syrer hat noch seine Kumpels dazugeholt. Wer kann das fassen??👹👹👹 #freiburg
— Russells Teekanne (@RussellsTeekann) October 26, 2018
Some also blamed the German authorities for the incident. “All detainees were known to police because of earlier crimes. Why are they still in our country?” a person asked rhetorically. “This rape could have been prevented. The accomplices sit in the Bundestag!” another man wrote in an apparent attack on Germany’s asylum and immigration policies.
The German media also received its share of criticism over what some described as inadequate coverage of the incident. “No, Tagesschau, that is not how it works today. [You] dedicated only a small note to the rape in Freiburg but issued a minutes-long video report about some ‘trumpets in rental apartments.’ Intention? Importance? In such a way, the media like you unfortunately provide a distorted picture,” a person wrote on Twitter, referring to a news show aired by the German public broadcaster, ARD.
— Oiram Izram (@Marzi_Mario) October 26, 2018
The German anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party also rushed to condemn the incident and promote some of its ideas. “What else should actually happen in our country before it will be acknowledged that multiculturalism is not something that is right? All the perpetrators were known to police… but roam free and gang-rape a defenseless woman,” the Bavarian branch of the right-wing party tweeted.

A German defense ministry official became the target of an angry Twitter mob after paying tribute to Erwin Rommel, igniting furious debate about whether the German general was a hero or a Nazi war criminal.
Peter Tauber, a senior defense ministry official who previously served as the Secretary General of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), took to Twitter on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of Rommel’s death.
“Erwin Rommel, who was forced to commit suicide by the Nazis, died 74 years ago today,” Tauber wrote.
Heute vor 74 Jahren starb Erwin Rommel, von den Nazis zum Selbstmord gezwungen.
— Peter Tauber (@petertauber) October 14, 2018
The tweet was poorly received, with many pointing to Rommel’s alleged crimes as a field marshal serving Hitler’s Nazi Germany.
“Sorry, was your account hacked?” Petra Pau of the Left Party replied. “Rommel participated in war crimes (to put it mildly), like so many others.”
“That war crimes were committed under his command in Italy should not be forgotten here,” Green MP Omid Nouripour said.
As per tradition, the tweet was also bombarded with a hailstorm of sarcastic memes.
However, others came to Tauber’s defense, with one Twitter user noting that “the barracks where I am stationed is still called Rommel Barracks.”
In a follow-up tweet, Tauber dismissed“leftist” anger over his comment as mere hyperventilation. He also defended his tweet in an interview with Bild, in which he claimed that Rommel had “repeatedly disregarded criminal orders” and had heroically plotted against Hitler.
Known as the “Desert Fox” for his crafty tactical displays in North Africa, Rommel was forced to commit suicide on Hitler’s orders, after being implicated in a plot to kill the Nazi leader.

The 22-year-old world No. 6 will jet off to France immediately after the fight to support his mentor Mark Flanagan as the power-punching cruiserweight faces Arsen Goulamirian in Marseille for the interim World Boxing Association cruiserweight title on Saturday week.
Paro expects to board his flight with plenty of war wounds after fighting Tlatlik, who boasts 22 wins in 23 fights and has never been stopped.
“Tlatlik is a very strong European-style pressure fighter,’’ Paro said.
“But I’ve prepared really well with some great sparring and I’m confident my boxing skills will give me another win.
“I’m still expecting a hard fight, though, from a very highly regarded boxer.’’
Paro is the No.6 contender for the World Boxing Organisation junior-welterweight title held by the American Maurice Hooker, who became champion after Jeff Horn’s nemesis Terence Crawford moved from the 63.5kg division to welterweight (66.7kg) so he could fight for Horn’s crown in Las Vegas.
Paro will be in Marseille to support Flanagan, who encouraged Paro’s boxing career when he was a novice amateur in Mackay, convincing him to move first to Townsville to train with the great Dennis Clancy before relocating to Brisbane to work with coach Alfie Di Carlo.
From Marseille, Paro will head to the World Boxing Organisation convention in Panama in a bid to boost his world ranking to qualify for a shot at Hooker next year.
Paro goes into Saturday night’s fight unbeaten in 14 pro fights.
Horn credits him for helping his preparation “enormously’’ with solid sparring sessions before Horn’s monumental victory over Manny Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium last year.
German tennis star Alexander Zverev gave a ballboy the fright of his life when he let out a massive roar while celebrating a point winner during his second-round match at the Shanghai Masters in China.

The world number five faced tough resistance from Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in the match opener, but managed to seize the initiative to claim a two-set victory 7-5 6-4.
After smashing a backhand winner in the first set, Zverev raised his fist and roared – terrifying the nearby ballkid, who was jolted backwards and popped out his eyes while the German approached.
Zverev will next face Alex De Minaur of Australia, who defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-3 6-3.

Klaus-Peter Kruemmling, a reporter working with Naumburger Tageblatt, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, his newspaper reported on Tuesday. The 59-year old has just finished shopping at his local Rewe supermarket on Friday evening when the brawl started.
While heading for his car, the reporter came across three youngsters – and one of them allegedly spat at him and gestured with his middle finger. Insulted by the obscene gesture, Kruemmling confronted the trio about their behavior near the pedestrian crossing – and this is where the brazen attack happened.
One of the teenagers stabbed the journalist in the stomach, while another performed the Nazi salute, local media reported, citing police. It took some time before Kruemmling realized that he had been stabbed with a knife. “Only later in the car did I notice that my stomach was wet and everything turned red,” he told the Naumburger by phone.
The reporter returned home and called the police before he was taken to hospital. Kruemmling narrowly escaped death, it seems – the paper reported that he sustained a 6cm-deep wound but, fortunately, it did not prove to be life-threatening.
Naumburg, home to some 30,000 people, is located in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. Germany’s east has recently seen a wave of far-right demonstrations triggered by the killing of a 35-year-old German man who was fatally stabbed in the town of Chemnitz.
Germany has seen a sharp rise in the number of violent attacks on journalists throughout the 2018, according to a latest survey by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF).
It said that a total of 28 journalists have suffered 22 verified physical assaults during 2018, while they were photographing, filming, or holding cameras during demonstrations or events.
