American teenager Red Gerard has won the first gold medal for the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics, edging Canadians Max Parrot and Mark McMorris for the top spot in men’s slopestyle snowboarding.
Gerard, a 17-year-old from Silverthorne, Colorado, drilled his third and final run on the chilly but sun-splashed course at Phoenix Snow Park. His score of 87.16 was just enough to edge Parrot.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

That’s what Diario Gol claim Gerard Deulofeu told Real Madrid ace Dani Ceballos after leaving Catalunya for a loan spell at Watford.
Deulofeu returned to Barcelona from Everton last summer following an impressive loan spell with Serie A giants AC Milan.
But he endured a frustrating stint back with his boyhood club, making just seven starts in all competitions under Valverde.
Deulofeu was packed off on loan to Watford on Monday and the latest reports suggest he was in contact with Ceballos in the wake of that switch.
According to Diario Gol, Deulofeu suggested Valverde’s selections are dictated by how close players are to Messi.
The Spanish outlet claim he sent a message to Ceballos on WhatsApp reading: “You play if you are Messi’s friend.”
Deulofeu’s message on Messi’s standing at Barcelona apparently reflects Ceballos’ feelings about life at Real.
The midfielder has started just twice in La Liga this term and is way down the pecking order at the Bernabeu.
Diario Gol indicate Ceballos believes Zinedine Zidane only picks players he likes, even if they’re not playing well.
Ceballos is said to have considered a return to Real Betis, the club he joined Real from, last month.
However, he ran out of time to clinch a loan deal and will have to accept a fringe role in Madrid for the rest of the season.
Gerard Butler is more often than not the biggest guy in the room. Or at least in his movies. Whether he’s going after the justice system, protecting the president, or delivering Shakespeare, he’s going bigger than everyone else…and he’s usually ripped. In Den of Thieves, playing a bull of an LAPD cop, Big Nick, he looks like a mammoth compared to some of those past roles.
The character’s size isn’t the only reason Butler disappears as Big Nick – it’s also his attitude. Christian Gudegat‘s directorial debut has one of Butler’s meatiest roles to date: a deeply flawed, isolated and dedicated cop. We spoke with the actor about how he wanted to play Big Nick, the transformation he made with the role, and some of his favorite actors.
Below, read our Gerard Butler interview.
You did quite a bit of research for this film. From the discussions you had and what you learned about Big Nick’s job, what about that lifestyle did you want to communicate or portray?
For me, I think trying to communicate that modern-day warrior. This guy who’s a silver-backed gorilla. What that means as a policeman, what that means and how he reacts with people. How he chews up every space. How he dominates people. He dominates the mood in a room physically, emotionally. And the impact that can have around him, that can have against his enemies and it can have with his family, both the negative impact, the positive impact. But just what it takes to be a person that lives in that space, that operates to that level of danger and brilliance and professionalism.
Then also examine a side of him being so impulsive. Being damned of consequences and he acts, and to hell with it. I love that because it allowed me to surprise myself and feel completely unpredictable and also know that you’re surprising the hell out of an audience as well. Where am I going to take this? Loving the fact that you don’t know. He thinks outside of the box. Anybody else would play on a chessboard but I’ll take a gun and shoot you in the brain, you take my pawn, I’m going to shoot you in the head. It’s like you never know what he’s going to do, and I just felt like an interesting psychology to climb into.
The character tells his wife it’s all street theater, but it makes you wonder how much of it is street theater and how much of it is really him. He seems at odds with himself.
I think that’s bang on. There comes a time where you can’t really justify the actions he’s taking anymore, and I feel like his journey through this movie is, all right, I’ve gone too far. Because people have put up with it until now, but then you don’t realize until it’s too late, and he’s lost his wife and he’s lost his kids, and he can’t see anymore that it is street theater because there is a certain amount of addiction and enjoyment in the way he lives that life. Yeah, it’s bruised him, it’s beaten him up, but at the same time, he’s also eating up that adrenaline. That’s hard when you leave that to go home, and how do you be the sweet dad who’s in a good mood all the time, and how do you be consistent for your wife? And how do you be a loyal, dear husband? It’s hard. He’s feeling the brunt of that now.
I was surprised by how much the movie takes its time, especially with his loneliness. Even the scene with Big Nick at the beach isn’t quite what you expect.
That’s what I loved about this script, and in fact, that beach thing, we did some additional photography and we shot that then, was to really try and show the moment before the big showdown of the effect that that was having on the character. They had a chance to examine where they’re at, and then appreciation for what is about to go down. That’s always great when you can see a character sit with themselves and go, what have I done? That had to be a big thing with Nick.
It’s one of the things that I found interesting and surprising about this movie is, yeah, it’s action-packed and it’s fun and it’s full of surprises, but it’s also very emotional and it lets you breathe with the characters and take a journey with them, and see the more intimate, subtle challenges that they go through as well, as they go head to head on the battlefield.

Even though this is Christian Gudegast’s first movie, you said he was one of the most prepared directors you’ve worked with. What created the trust between you two?
Christian has been a very good friend of mine for many years now, and we worked on a few different projects, some that he’d written, some that I’d developed and produced, and actually, I had him write a draft of London Has Fallen. The whole time, we were trying to pull this together, but without a doubt, there’s a risk that you take with a director who’s first-time, no matter how close you are with them because you never know. They can speak a great game but they might not end up doing a great job.
Knowing Christian, and when we would sit and discuss the movie, I’d never worked with any director who had explained so proficiently, so accurately, so beautifully, a character, a world, a story, a moment. There’s a story about me eating raw chicken … I don’t know if you know that story, eating raw chicken at a restaurant, because I would get so wrapped up in his words, and he was actually talking about Big Nick, and I’m sitting at a Korean barbecue, eating what I thought was sushi, and I ate a plate and a half of raw chicken, talking to him, because he’s talking about Big Nick, and that lion inside him. And the thing I’m talking about, consuming … And literally … And you just get lost in that. And then I know enough, in my experience, to go, if we get anything like that in this movie, then we’re going to have a pretty incredible movie. I really abandon myself a lot to trusting this guy, who is like, in a lot of ways, the ultimate man.
You work with a lot of directors who are not particularly masculine, and then you work with the likes of Antoine Fuqua or Zack Snyder or Christian, who really know what it means to be a man and who are tough, and who speak up. They speak big, but they actually are able to back it up. I like to go to bat for my director when I know they’ve lived it, and Christian has really lived it. He’s created this world, and these are his friends, he’s friends with these guys. He’s friends with these cops, these undercover cops, and he’s friends with these UFC fighters and military. So you know he knows what he’s talking about.
‘Cause he was a first-timer, and he trusts me so much, I could help him a lot in his journey, and he really listened to me, so that was a cool thing, too. There’d be times where I’d go, “Christian, we don’t need to do this” or “Let’s not examine this area. We actually it a lot better in the script.” ‘Cause he loves experimenting, which I appreciated, but there were sometimes, you didn’t have time, or I thought we were going in the wrong direction, ad he really listened to me a lot, and that was beautiful. I think that was the start of a long-term collaboration that we’ll have together because it never says … It only brought us closer and closer as we worked together. I always trusted that really, he is Big Nick.
Like the fight with my wife, he knew how to be a father and a man, and how to express extreme anger in the most subtle of ways. A man who doesn’t want his kids to experience any of what’s going on, and that kind of desperation, and there are moments where you go, “Okay, so what’s that, then?” And see how he would express himself. And then, the other moments where I go, “I know who Big Nick is, I can take it there.” But just the moment to trust that incredible power that he has as a man and a father was pretty cool.
Even on set, it was clear you were making a big transformation as Big Nick. When it came to finding the way he moves, talks, and carries himself, where did you start?
I worked with this great coach, Larry Moss, who worked with Hilary Swank and works with Leo, and he really makes you think about those things, like how do I explain every second of my day? How do I drive a car? How do I get out of a car? How do I look? What am I thinking about when I walk into a room? How do you drink out of your class? Actually, it was something I would talk a lot about with Christian as well. In fact, that time when I was eating the raw chicken, he’s like, “Look, see how you’re holding your glass? That’s Big Nick. See the way you’re looking at me right now? That’s Big Nick right there.”
So you spend more and more time examining the physicality. How do you step out, how do you pull your chair back, how do you bring your jacket on, and you start having fun with it. You go, oh that works, that feels good, and that feels like that silverback that I want to get. Or whether it’s a vulnerable moment or the humorous side that he has, he’s able to use that physical weight that he has, sometimes to intimidate, sometimes to be humorous. Sometimes just understand the power that you have. So you start playing with that, and yeah, I really liked how that panned out in the movie.
There was something I didn’t get a chance to ask you on set, but you talked about your love for Gene Hackman, and just how much personality and intensity he could bring to a role. I’m just curious, what other actors do you enjoy watching?
To me, funnily enough, on the way here, on the plane from Miami, I just watched Cool Hand Luke again. You look at somebody like Paul Newman, who could just bring such intelligence and such coolness and such humor to a role. These are maybe the cliches, but him and Steve McQueen, I love to watch. God, who else? I’m trying to think of people more from that age. By the way, when I say that about Gene Hackman … Gene Hackman in every movie, he always brought that huge amount of personality. When I was younger and didn’t understand it, I just used to go, “Why is this guy so watchable? Why are these movies so brilliant?” But now, you get it. Now, as an actor, when you realize that to be like that, a lot of the time, you have to study those moments. I can respect his performances even more as a grown up.

The Irish actor has locked lips with many women in his career as a big screen heartthrob.
During a cheeky interview this week, he was put on the spot and asked to compare kissing two of his most famous leading ladies.
Butler was appearing on Watch What Happens Live when host Andy Cohen made him squirm with embarrassment at his outrageous question.
The answer is so charged because Aniston and Jolie were famously portrayed a love rivals for over a decade after Brad Pitt divorced the and suspiciously quickly announced his relationship with the latter in 2005.
So who is the better kisser?
The section of the show is called Pleasd the fifth, referrring to the US constitutional ammendment which allows somebody to avoid answer in a question in court.
Butler kissed Aniston in teh comedy The Bounty Hunter and Jolie in her first outing as Lara Croft and from the video clips below is looks certain that the raunchy scene with Jolie will win the day.
Cohen would not let Butler dodge the high profile bullet and forced an answer.
Butler responded: “Oh no, no….” But then he caved in and admitted: “Jennifer Aniston. I’m just taking you by surprise.”
WATCH GERARD BUTLER KISS ANGELINA AND JENNIFER NEXT:
Fans have always taken sides over the Jolie/Aniston rivalry and Jen’s followers celebrated her victory.
One posted: “Omg yes Gerard! Jennifer Aniston IS a better kisser than Angelina Jolie!”
Another added: “I knew it! Jennifer Aniston is the better kisser than Angelina Jolie. Gerard Butler says so and he’s an excellent judge.”
Brangelina finally married nine years after annoucing their relationship but split just two years later.
Butler was on the the show on Wednesday night to promote his new movie Den of Thieves.
Heading into the Den of Thieves set visit, I was mostly thinking about Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. While leaving the Den of Thieves set visit, I was still mostly thinking about Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The artist, entrepreneur, Vitaminwater moneymaker, and actor was a lot more entertaining and honest than (understandably) some actors tend to be speaking with bloggers on sets. Like most of the cast, he was enjoying himself in Atlanta, Georgia, during a day of filming of the upcoming crime thriller, which stars Gerard Butler as a hulking L.A.P.D cop chasing down a crew of robbers.
Jackson plays Levi Enson, one of the criminals planning to rob the Federal Reserve in Downtown Los Angeles, and as his fine associate Merrimen (American God‘s Pablo Schreiber) points out in the trailer, the Federal Reserve Bank contains anywhere between $ 500 to $ 800 billion dollars at a time. One of the many obstacles facing the team, which also includes O’Shea Jackson Jr. (who was fantastic in Ingrid Goes West) and Evan Jones (8 Miles), is Nick “Big Nick” Flanagan (Butler), “a good guy fucked up in a lot of dark ways,” according to Butler, who has a refreshing and extremely rare sense of humor about some of his movies.
The French Connection, Heat, and The Town (a title dropped more than once on the set) are definitely in the sandbox of writer and first-time director Christian Gudegast (London Has Fallen). Gudegest grew up in Los Angeles around cops, Navy Seals, and LAPD officers, but some of his other friends went down a different path. “What’s always interested me with the classic movies with good guys and bad guys, the reality is that’s not what it is,” Gudegast told us. “It’s far more fascinating to me that they’re basically the same kind of dude, and the way life worked for them – maybe one grew up without a dad or got in trouble in High School – they just barely go to the other side. The differences that separate them are virtually nothing.”

While this is not based on a true story, the filmmaker, who also wrote the ridiculously enjoyable London Has Fallen, did base his story on a real plan that was hatched but never completed. “We had to fill in the blanks,” Gudegast explained. “We worked with people at the Federal Reserve and said, ‘How do you make the impossible kind of possible?’ We made it as real as we possibly could. Could you really do it? Probably not. In the world of movies? Yeah, you can.” To make the heist more plausible on-screen, staying close to the truth and the world being depicted was a driving force on the project. Consultants from the military and the LAPD and the former head of the Hell’s Angels – and an ATF cop who took on the Hell’s Angels – worked on the film to help the director and his stars create a sense of authenticity.
While Gudegast was inspired by To Live and Die in LA, Heat, Jackie Brown, and Un prophète, he was more interested in the reality than how the genre paints it. From the tattoos the cops have to the cars they drive to the clothes and even shoes they wear, he wanted to get everything right. “I love Heat, it’s an incredible film, but the world of Heat doesn’t exist,” he claimed. “It’s very stylized. This is the real world. The Chicano experience was covered with End of Watch, Training Day, and the black experience was covered with Boyz n the Hood, Menace II Society, and Straight Outta Compton. But that part of the world – the mix of everything – has not really been covered accurately. That’s what we’re going to do here.” For Gudegast, the shoot was about “authenticity all day long,” because the “truth is not only stranger than fiction, it’s much more fascinating than fiction.”

One of the highlights of the visit was speaking with a retired undercover operative, Jay Dobyns, whose crew was an inspiration for Big Nick and his team. “From my experience, the reality of it is not sexy, not glamorous,” he told us. “It’s a nasty, dirty, grimy, bloody, vomit-covered scab of a life. When I went into it, I thought it was Miami Vice, but I realized quickly it was nothing like that.” During his 27 years on the job, he knew “very, very few people who did that job with a Rolex and drove a fancy car,” but knew characters like Big Nick’s crew “on the hustle” and “pushing the limits of everything they do.”
Dobyns helped run the show for two separate boot camps, one for the criminals and one for the cops. As Gudegast said, sometimes the two opposite sides of the law share something in common, but according to the consultant, that’s a part of what makes some cops stay ahead. “I think the best plainclothes cops and undercover cops were walking a fence at one point in their lives and could’ve fallen on the bad guy side of the fence but fell on the good guy side of the fence,” he said. “Those guys are so good, because they understand the mentality of the adversary, think like bad guys, and anticipate like bad guys. You see that with these guys, with our characters.” With these characters, he wants them to be instantly recognizable to those who’ve lived this life, so they can see the movie and go, “‘That’s how we look, that’s how we talked, that’s how we acted.’” If that’s how members of law enforcement respond to the movie, then Dobyns will know he did his job.
The consultant – who’s worked everything from hand-to-hand street narcotic transactions to infiltrating crime syndicates and more – knows the frustration of watching phony depictions of the force. “We look at films and go, ‘They didn’t get that right,’” he said. “We’re trying to eliminate that as much as possible. It’s still a movie, and we still need to make it entertaining….I told these actors, ‘You guys make more money working on a film in two months than I make in 20 years, doing the job for real. Here’s the difference: I don’t get to repeat a line. When I’m working undercover, I have to get it right the first time. I don’t get a second take. If I fuck up my line, I’m going to get a baseball bat on the back of my head. And the people I’m dealing with, they’re holding real guns with real bullets…You don’t get to get shot 20 times. I’ve been shot on the job. You get shot one time, that’s all you need to know, that’s all you need to go through to realize this sucks, this is bullshit, and I don’t like this.” As for the other side of the law, he also wanted the same level of accuracy with characters who have their “PhDs in violence, intimidation, and crime.”

Talk about an ill-timed movie. On the tail of some of the most devastating hurricanes the United States has seen in decades, Geostorm is coming in to…regale you with an inspiring story of Gerard Butler fighting the weather? Unfortunately, it looks like he’s on the losing side in the new Geostorm trailer, which features all manner of CGI earthquakes, hail storms, tsunamis, and hurricanes. Because that’s what people to go the movies for, to see big budget recreations of disasters that are all too real.
It only takes a minute into the trailer for a character to say the title of the movie — “It’s a…Geostorm,” Daniel Wu dramatically declares — which is a word no human would say of their own volition. What follows is by-the-books exposition of how a manmade climate-controlling machine goes haywire, causing massive disasters across the globe that threaten millions of lives. And only Gerard Butler can stop it. I think.
If Geostorm is a movie that feels like it’s five years too late, that’s because it is. If this big budget disaster movie, helmed by Independence Day producer Dean Devlin in his directorial debut, were made directly after, say, The Day After Tomorrow or 2012, no one would have blinked an eye. The early 2000s were the heyday of cautionary tentpole tales about climate change, spurred on partly by the growing concerns about global warming and partly by the need to just see the Statue of Liberty get wrecked.
Geostorm would have been one of those, going into production back in 2014 before the film was delayed by expensive reshoots, script changes, and a long, pricey post-production process. The price tag ended up coming close to $ 15 million worth in reshoots — which is a disaster in and of itself. Now the movie is only met with more bad luck as it nears its October release date, mere months after Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were ravaged by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, in quick succession. It’s horrible timing for what looks to be an already-doomed disaster movie — less an escapist fantasy now than a grim reality. (Psst, climate change is real, folks. Also this article provides helpful links to donate to Hurricane Harvey and Irma victims.)
Here’s the official synopsis for Geostorm:
After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong: the system built to protect Earth is attacking it, and it becomes a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone along with it.
Geostorm is set to hit theaters on October 20, 2017.

Hot on the heels of releasing its Castlevania animated series last Friday, Netflix announced a new adaptation from a different nerd corner. The streaming content titan will make a 10-episode live action show out of Dark Horse Comics’ dysfunctional superhero property The Umbrella Academy, which was created by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and award-winning illustrator Gabriel Bá.
It’s official. You have our permission to freak out. #UmbrellaAcademy https://t.co/HB6IpP9uqx

Way’s transition from emo band frontman to comic scribe was unexpected, but aided by lavish art from Bá, The Umbrella Academy‘s twisted take on the superhero genre garnered it critical praise and an Eisner (comics’ Oscar-equivalent award). While networks have been seriously considering adapting the work since 2015, Netflix snapped up the limited run and attached Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) as executive producer. The show will be adapted and written by Jeremy Slater, who wrote a draft of Netflix’s film take on Death Note.

I caught some of Independence Day on cable during the Fourth of July, and was struck by how Hollywood doesn’t make many movies like that anymore. Sure, massive blockbusters with ensemble casts are a dime a dozen, but the disaster movie genre isn’t what it used to be.
Enter Dean Devlin, the man who wrote and produced Independence Day. His directorial debut, Geostorm, looks to singlehandedly resurrect that cheesy, ludicrously-plotted type of movie to theaters. If you’re looking for a film that features ridiculous concepts like Gerard Butler (300) trying to outsmart malfunctioning satellites that control the weather while Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe, 21) and Abbie Cornish (Limitless) kidnap the President (Andy Garcia), you’re going to love this.
As Jacob indicated in his write-up of the film’s first trailer, you’re either going to be all-in for this type of insanity or you’ve already clicked away because you want to get the stink of that trailer off your screen as quickly as possible. If this were five or 10 years ago, I would have embraced the silliness and seen this on opening weekend, but now I’m of the mindset that life is too short to wade around in bad movies – especially when there are so many classic films I haven’t seen yet.
Geostorm is the first co-production between David Ellison‘s Skydance Productions (the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises) and Warner Bros. Pictures, and all signs point to an ignominious start to that partnership. This movie completed principal photography way back in 2014, but the studio apparently didn’t like what they saw. Last year, they ordered weeks worth of reshoots to the tune of $ 15 million that involved recasting a character, adding a new female scientist, hiring Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis to contribute to the script, and adding more visual effects and music to the final product. Oh yeah, and Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon came in to direct the reshoots while Jerry freakin’ Bruckheimer was called on to oversee the whole thing. (The official explanation for why Devlin didn’t direct the reshoots was that he was busy with another project.)
Geostorm also stars Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush), Daniel Wu (The Man with the Iron Fists, Warcraft: The Beginning), and Ed Harris (Apollo 13, The Abyss), and the film (finally) arrives in theaters on October 20, 2017.

Houllier was instrumental to France’s World Cup and European Championship successes having been the brains behind their state-of-the-art training base at Clairefontaine in the 1990s.
Now, five years into the life of St George’s Park, he feels England are finally getting ready to build on the success of lifting the Under 20 World Cup and win major honours again.
Provided, that is, a star name emerges to lift them above their rivals. Alli, he believes, could be that player.
“To me, St George’s Park is a great achievement and you will see the benefit of that in five or ten years’ time,” said Frenchman Houllier. “We opened Clairefontaine in 1988 – we won the World Cup in 1998.
“But to win something you need to have a good team with an outstanding player. France had Zidane when he was playing. We haven’t won since he stopped.
“Portugal, who with all due respect, are a good-to-average side that work hard, is well-organised and has a good coach… and have Cristiano Ronaldo. That makes a difference.
“For France, Dimitri Payet was not exceptional enough last summer. Maybe in future we will have Antoine Griezmann.
“Look at the teams that win. Argentina with Diego Maradona. Portugal with Ronaldo. France with Zidane… you need a player like that.
“Even the Champions League final, Juventus and Real Madrid. Who won? The team that had Ronaldo. It is a collective sport where the individual makes the difference.
“You need to have a top, top outstanding player and Alli can be that for England. He is still young, but he is something special.
“England are on the right track. They are developing proper coaches and proper players at some point it will pay off.
“But it will only pay off if they find that bright spark who makes it all happen.”
