(The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.)
In this edition, Cracked tries to figure out whether Geostorm is worse than The Snowman. Plus, see an amusing trailer mash-up of Black Panther and the comedy classic Coming to America, and find out how robotic limbs are now close to the technology seen in the Star Wars saga.
First up, a trailer mash-up imagines if Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem from Coming to America was Marvel’s Black Panther. Funny or Die put together this clever blending of footage that is rather effective in turning Eddie Murhpy into a naive, kingly superhero. We’re just glad Eddie Murphy isn’t playing all the parts this time.
The latest episode of Science and Star Wars takes a look at robotic limbs and how real-life technology today has come to echo the technology that was once science fiction in the Star Wars saga. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time, but we still need to figure out how to get real lightsabers into our hands.
Finally, the folks at Cracked try to figure out whether the climate action thriller Geostorm or the completely unsubtle and silly crime thriller The Snowman was worse. There’s compelling arguments on each side, but no matter who wins, anyone who saw either of these movies definitely lost.

On the October 25, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by Ben Pearson and Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest news, including Captain Marvel gets a Star Wars villain, Geostorm’s box office failure, Venom motion capture, a Shaun of the Dead sequel, an American Gangster prequel tv series and Mark Wahlberg asks God for forgiveness. And in The Mail Bag, we’ll answer a question about why box office numbers don’t tell us attendance figures.
You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).

Feedback:
In The Mailbag: Kendra from Maryland writes in: “Why aren’t box office indicators in the following categories: number of tickets sold, IMAX tickets sold, and gross revenue? Tickets sold, would give us a better indication (kind of like record sales) of how many people have actually seen the movie rather than the movie grossed 20M at the box office. IMAX tickets sold would give us an indication of how many people are really going to see the movie in IMAX, plus the cost is significantly different from a regular movie ticket. Gross revenue should equal box office sales; depending on geographies the pricing for movies are different plus you have to consider inflation.”

John Carter. The Lone Ranger. Tomorrowland. Ben-Hur. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. These are just a few recent high-profile films from major studios that ended up being serious box office bombs. And now a new member is set to join their ranks: Geostorm, the Gerard Butler vs. extreme weather disaster movie that’s currently in theaters, may end up losing $ 100 million when all is said and done.
Meanwhile, Jigsaw – the eighth film Saw franchise – is set to resurrect that horror series with a $ 20 million-plus opening weekend. Read the latest Jigsaw and Geostorm box office reports here.
Geostorm, which was delayed by more than a year and coughed up an extra $ 15 million for major reshoots after some reportedly disastrous test screenings, made only $ 14 million domestically and $ 66 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Considering its budget ballooned to a reported $ 120 million by the time those reshoots took place, and factoring in the costs of advertising, The Wrap says the film’s break-even point should be somewhere between $ 300-$ 350 million. With a planned release in China not expected to be able to save the movie to the extent that it needs, and Thor: Ragnarok approaching next weekend to monopolize the box office, analysts say Dean Devlin‘s directorial debut will be lucky to make $ 200 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. That means it might lose as much as $ 100 million. Ouch.
But Warner Bros. isn’t entirely left out in the cold: they co-financed the movie with Skydance Pictures and RatPac Entertainment, so the three companies will share the loss equally instead of one studio taking a huge hit.
On the other end of the spectrum, Jigsaw is tracking well: Deadline says the movie could open as high as $ 24 million. That’s not bad for a franchise that hasn’t been active for seven years. (The seventh film, Saw 3D, came out back in 2010.) Of course, it helps that it’s a horror movie being released within a few days of Halloween because there’s always something magical about seeing a horror film in a dark theater on or around that spooky holiday. While some may roll their eyes at the return of the Saw franchise, I’m fascinated with the idea of this series picking back up again – especially since (spoiler alert) the antagonist died way back in the third movie. How the hell is he still orchestrating his morality “games” all these years later? I’m genuinely interested in finding out.
Geostorm is in theaters now, and Jigsaw arrives on October 27, 2017.

In The Mailbag: Jim from Chicago writes in “I am really enjoying your discussion on trailers, spoilers, and how the movie-going community see movies, and I wanted to ask your guys’ opinion on deceptive trailers, or bait-and-switch trailers. When I was younger and the film Lord of War, with Nicolas Cage and Jared Leto, was coming out, the trailers made it seem as though the movie was an action comedy. And while there were moments of levity in film, due to the absurdity and extreme nature of being gun runners, the actual opening of the film was a sequence that followed the creation of a bullet all the way to the point where it was used to kill someone, and was very effective at setting the tone for the rest of the movie. I did end up enjoying the movie quite a bit, but it will always stand out as a movie I was basically tricked into seeing. Have any of you guys experienced this as well with other films? Can’t wait to hear your stories. Keep up the great work”

Geostorm has had a rough road to the big screen. The Dean Devlin-directed disaster movie was shot back in 2014 but after some reportedly awful test screenings, the film underwent massive and expensive reshoots and was delayed all the way until today, when it finally stumbled into theaters without press screenings or even Thursday night showings in most markets.
Sounds bad, right? Well, the reviews have arrived, and while the movie’s 18% Rotten Tomatoes score might seem dire, some of the reviews are having the opposite effect intended: they’re painting the film as being so bad that it might actually be worth seeing if you’re amped for a “so bad it’s good” experience. Take a look at some Geostorm review quotes below, and decide for yourselves whether you’re ready to face down the storm(s).
Geostorm isn’t the type of film we’d normally do a review round-up for, but some of these quotes were too good not to share. And if you’re worried about spoilers for this film, maybe you should turn back now. Still with me? On with the show.
The best of the reactions come from ScreenCrush’s Matt Singer, who notably recommends that you do not watch this movie:
Geostorm is so punishingly bad it makes Independence Day: Resurgence look like Last Year at Marienbad. …
It’s not all bad, though. Or at least there are some parts that are so bad they’re kind of good. I love that Devlin has the audacity (or total indifference) to create three separate sequences where people run from weather, including one where a woman in a bikini stumbles down a blind alley go get away from a wall of cold. Will she run out of room before it gets kind of cold? (SPOILER ALERT: Devlin cuts away before we find out. Also, a plane almost falls on her.)
There’s also a scene where Ed Harris randomly pulls a rocket launcher from the truck of a limousine. (It doesn’t make much more sense in context.) At one point, a bolt of lightning strikes a large civic convention center and the entire building instantly explodes. I’m not a physicist, but I’m not completely sure that’s how lightning or explosions work. (Someone ask Neil deGrasse Tyson, he’ll know.) Also, this network of satellites designed to control weather includes a gigantic Bond-villain-style death ray; literally a huge laser that obliterates things from space. I get trying to seed clouds or dissipate tornados, but exactly what practical purpose did the death ray serve? It just seems like a bad idea to have that hanging around.
Chris Bumbray from JoBlo says the film is a “disasterpiece”:
It’s such a mess that you wonder how such a huge gamble could go so wrong. Yet, for all its faults Geostorm is quite wonderful in its awfulness. Were this an actual spoof, it would be nowhere near as funny as it is. Everyone is so sincere, from Butler as the world’s least likely scientist, to Sturgess as his politician brother and Abbie Cornish as his badass Secret servicewoman lover, that in its hopefully awry way Geostorm is perfect.
DenOfGeek‘s Simon Brew points out some of the movie’s ridiculous dialogue, always a staple of the “so bad it’s good” genre:
There are some pearlers in here on the dialogue front, too. Butler at one stage declares “I’d rather not catch fish with my family than catch 20 fish alone”, which is surely destined to be one of those motivational signs that offices tend to stick on the walls. You also get, for your money, the most bizarrely cryptic hiding of a message in a transmission I think I’ve ever seen in a movie. Yet Butler and Sturgess are so straight-faced, they somehow pull it off.
Matt Goldberg at Collider calls the film “the big summer blockbuster of 1998,” describing it as “achingly familiar”:
You know the scene in The Day After Tomorrow where Jake Gyllenhaal outruns weather? Devlin must have watched that scene and thought to himself, “What if that, but as an entire movie?” Every set piece in Geostorm is just people outrunning weather. In Hong Kong, geothermal temperatures spike, plumes of fire start coming out of the ground, and a scientist has to outrun it. People have to outrun tornados, hailstorms, and air that freezes you instantly.
Luke Buckmaster at Australia’s DailyReview says the movie has a “satisfying amount of madness” in it, and compared it to the disaster films of the 1990s:
Geostorm brings tin-eared dialogue and squirrely, logic-deprived plotlines a-plenty. Miraculously, however, I had quite a bit of fun with it. To appreciate this film, which I suppose can be rationalised in the context of a guilty pleasure, one needs to be on the same page as it – which is to say, somewhere semi-illiterate. A key piece of imagery depicts shimmering white clouds broken up by gushes of divine light, as a voice-over lectures us about “one planet, one future.”
Empire’s Chris Hewitt says the movie is “not a stinker for the ages,” but then goes on to say the following – which certainly sounds ludicrous enough to me:
Of course, none of it makes a lick of sense, but that might have been inevitable anyway, given the grade-A gobbledegook being thrown around to justify a plot so ludicrous the entire cast deserve honorary Oscars for being able to resist the urge to look at the camera and mouth, “Help me.” Yet it all hangs together. Ish. And it even kicks up a gear after about an hour of geotedium, signalled by the year’s most unintentionally hilarious scene, where Butler and Jim Sturgess, as his estranged brother who’s working in the White House (yes, it’s that sort of movie), communicate in code.
I haven’t seen the movie yet myself, but I know it’s being offered in the immersive 4DX format in select locations. And really, if you’re planning on seeing Geostorm in theaters, shouldn’t you just go all-out and see it in 4DX? Sounds like the best way to embrace the full-blown idiocy of a movie like this. Be sure to let us know what you think if you end up seeing the film this weekend.

Talk about an ill-timed movie. On the tail of some of the most devastating hurricanes the United States has seen in decades, Geostorm is coming in to…regale you with an inspiring story of Gerard Butler fighting the weather? Unfortunately, it looks like he’s on the losing side in the new Geostorm trailer, which features all manner of CGI earthquakes, hail storms, tsunamis, and hurricanes. Because that’s what people to go the movies for, to see big budget recreations of disasters that are all too real.
It only takes a minute into the trailer for a character to say the title of the movie — “It’s a…Geostorm,” Daniel Wu dramatically declares — which is a word no human would say of their own volition. What follows is by-the-books exposition of how a manmade climate-controlling machine goes haywire, causing massive disasters across the globe that threaten millions of lives. And only Gerard Butler can stop it. I think.
If Geostorm is a movie that feels like it’s five years too late, that’s because it is. If this big budget disaster movie, helmed by Independence Day producer Dean Devlin in his directorial debut, were made directly after, say, The Day After Tomorrow or 2012, no one would have blinked an eye. The early 2000s were the heyday of cautionary tentpole tales about climate change, spurred on partly by the growing concerns about global warming and partly by the need to just see the Statue of Liberty get wrecked.
Geostorm would have been one of those, going into production back in 2014 before the film was delayed by expensive reshoots, script changes, and a long, pricey post-production process. The price tag ended up coming close to $ 15 million worth in reshoots — which is a disaster in and of itself. Now the movie is only met with more bad luck as it nears its October release date, mere months after Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were ravaged by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, in quick succession. It’s horrible timing for what looks to be an already-doomed disaster movie — less an escapist fantasy now than a grim reality. (Psst, climate change is real, folks. Also this article provides helpful links to donate to Hurricane Harvey and Irma victims.)
Here’s the official synopsis for Geostorm:
After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong: the system built to protect Earth is attacking it, and it becomes a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone along with it.
Geostorm is set to hit theaters on October 20, 2017.

I caught some of Independence Day on cable during the Fourth of July, and was struck by how Hollywood doesn’t make many movies like that anymore. Sure, massive blockbusters with ensemble casts are a dime a dozen, but the disaster movie genre isn’t what it used to be.
Enter Dean Devlin, the man who wrote and produced Independence Day. His directorial debut, Geostorm, looks to singlehandedly resurrect that cheesy, ludicrously-plotted type of movie to theaters. If you’re looking for a film that features ridiculous concepts like Gerard Butler (300) trying to outsmart malfunctioning satellites that control the weather while Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe, 21) and Abbie Cornish (Limitless) kidnap the President (Andy Garcia), you’re going to love this.
As Jacob indicated in his write-up of the film’s first trailer, you’re either going to be all-in for this type of insanity or you’ve already clicked away because you want to get the stink of that trailer off your screen as quickly as possible. If this were five or 10 years ago, I would have embraced the silliness and seen this on opening weekend, but now I’m of the mindset that life is too short to wade around in bad movies – especially when there are so many classic films I haven’t seen yet.
Geostorm is the first co-production between David Ellison‘s Skydance Productions (the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises) and Warner Bros. Pictures, and all signs point to an ignominious start to that partnership. This movie completed principal photography way back in 2014, but the studio apparently didn’t like what they saw. Last year, they ordered weeks worth of reshoots to the tune of $ 15 million that involved recasting a character, adding a new female scientist, hiring Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis to contribute to the script, and adding more visual effects and music to the final product. Oh yeah, and Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon came in to direct the reshoots while Jerry freakin’ Bruckheimer was called on to oversee the whole thing. (The official explanation for why Devlin didn’t direct the reshoots was that he was busy with another project.)
Geostorm also stars Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush), Daniel Wu (The Man with the Iron Fists, Warcraft: The Beginning), and Ed Harris (Apollo 13, The Abyss), and the film (finally) arrives in theaters on October 20, 2017.

But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.
