Georgia’s presidential election will go to a second round between two former foreign ministers. No single candidate won outright in the first round, the Central Election Commission (CEC) said on Monday. After all the votes from Sunday’s first round were counted, French-born former diplomat and Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili secured 38.7 percent of the vote. Grigol Vashadze, also a former foreign minister, received 37.7 percent. A runoff between Zurabishvili and Vashadze will be held before December 2. Constitutional changes have handed most authority to the office of prime minister. There were some irregularities, but no serious violations took place during the election, Reuters quoted Tamar Zhvania, the head of the CEC, as saying.

Sam Park picks at his lunch at El Torero, a Mexican restaurant in Duluth, a northeastern suburb of Atlanta. It’s a somewhat ironic choice, given that the 32-year-old politician could have picked from dozens of nearby places to emphasize his Korean heritage in a neighborhood where Eastern churches and Asian grocery stores abound.

This is home, though. And so the fact that Park knows his tacos as well as his Korean BBQ is kind of the point. Increasingly, the area will be known less as the “Seoul of the South,” than simply the modern iteration of “the South.” Gwinnett County, one of the most diverse in the nation, is noteworthy for more than its culinary fusion. The county was 90 percent white in 1990, but by 2040, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission, Gwinnett will be 37 percent Latino, 29 percent white, 20 percent Black, and 14 percent Asian and others. “It really is a diverse cross-section that seems to be moving toward some sort of equilibrium,” Park says. ”Which I think is fascinating from a nerdy point of view.”

Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless. And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.

Stacey Abrams, former Georgia House Minority Leader

Georgia’s only male Asian-American lawmaker and the first openly gay man elected to its state House could well be one of the faces of that demographic shift led by historic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — who is seeking to become the nation’s first Black woman elected governor. Georgia Democrats are betting less white means more blue. Park readily admits the change isn’t “inevitable,” and his own story is instructive on this point. He upset a three-term Republican incumbent in 2016, but it was one of few bright spots for Democrats that night as the GOP continues to dominate the state. His proposals to boost voter registration, increase patient access to medical cannabis and expand access to public services for non-English speakers ran into roadblocks in the Republican-dominated House. Park also worked on the much-hyped campaign of Democrat Jon Ossoff, who fell short in the most expensive congressional election in history.

But Park is playing the long game. As Ossoff’s deputy political director, he was in charge of converting Asian-American, Muslim and LGBT voters — many of whom remain engaged in this year’s midterm elections. His efforts drew national notice. “Koreans who may never have donated or door-knocked or registered to vote, they were seeing and hearing from him, and were probably even engaged for the first time,” says Christine Chen, executive director of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote. That momentum has translated to first-time candidates like Ethan Pham and David Kim running for Congress in a Gwinnett-based district (Pham lost in the May primary; Kim advanced to the Democratic runoff on July 24). “Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless,” says Abrams, the former state House minority leader who has led Democratic efforts to turn out minorities. “And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.”

But Democrats have been claiming Georgia will run blue for a few cycles now to no avail. While demographics might shift, “you still have to be a candidate who resonates with an overwhelming amount of voters,” Republican strategist Ryan Mahoney says. As for Park? “I think Sam is too young in this whole game. … When you don’t have majorities under the Gold Dome, you have to make a decision: You can be loud and build your name ID, or you can get something done.”

Dressed casually over lunch, Park appears even younger than his promo photos and social media image. The slick suit and side-fade suggest calm, cool, collected lawyer. In person, Park is more thirty-something still trying to find his place in this political age. His short time as a candidate hasn’t given him the polished air of practiced politicians, but it has allowed him to retain an authentic persona — and a sense of awe. “My grandparents were refugees from the Korean War,” he says. “I don’t come from a political background, and yet here I am, a state rep. That can only happen in a country like America.”

His parents raised him Christian and Republican, like many Asian-Americans who settled in the South during the ’90s. They were entrepreneurs, owning a small check-cashing store for a decade before shifting to a cell phone outlet. In 2014, Park’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Although she passed away earlier this year, she initially was able to get treatment partly because she was covered under the Affordable Care Act, and was a recent convert to the Democratic Party. Preserving the health care law was part of Park’s decision to run for office. “It’s the benefits that we receive that makes my love for my country even stronger,” he says.

The decision wasn’t easy. Abrams remembers sitting down with Park, a former intern of hers, when he was debating whether to run. “He was concerned about running as an out gay man, because his mother and community understood it but it wasn’t talked about,” she says. The two had an honest conversation about the interconnectedness of race, sexuality and religion in the Korean community. “The bravest thing he told me is that he was willing to risk these things to win this election.” He understood, in other words, that “if he didn’t say who he was, he wouldn’t be running an honest campaign for himself.”

Park is now focused on making tangible gains in the legislature on civil rights, redistricting reform and expanding Medicaid. In the long run, he hopes a progressive, pro-worker platform can expand Democrats’ appeal no matter voters’ color — or preferred cuisine.

Correction: Sam Park was mistakenly listed as Georgia’s only Asian-American lawmaker. He is actually one of two, the other being Rep. Bee Nguyen of Atlanta, who was elected in 2017. We regret the error.

'Don't leave us. We'll die': Nurse recalls rescuing 19 special needs patients from Georgian shelling https://briefnews.eu/dont-leave-us-well-die-nurse-recalls-rescuing-19-special-needs-patients-from-georgian-shelling/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-leave-us-well-die-nurse-recalls-rescuing-19-special-needs-patients-from-georgian-shelling/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 06:51:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-leave-us-well-die-nurse-recalls-rescuing-19-special-needs-patients-from-georgian-shelling/ A nurse from South Ossetia, who rescued 19 people from a burning psychiatric ward in Tskhinval during the Georgian raid and spent days in a cellar with terrified mental patients, has recalled the tragic events of August 2008.

Irina Bibilova was on a night shift on August 8 when the Georgian forces launched a sudden, large-scale attack on the breakaway Republic of South Ossetia. Its capital Tskhinval immediately came under indiscriminate shelling, with a local psychiatric ward becoming one of the targets.

As the first explosions were heard, Irina and other medics decided to gather the patients on the first floor of the hospital. But they quickly realized that it wasn’t safe there either and began evacuating the facility.

“Under the garage building [not far from the hospital] there was a trench to repair the cars. And they let us in and we stayed in that hole for 24 hours,” Irina told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

At some point, the nurses realized that one of their female patients had been left behind and they made a heroic decision to abandon their shelter to retrieve her. When they found the woman, the hospital was already burning after being hit by artillery and it was no easy task to persuade the mentally ill person to go with them.

Irina recalled that she and other nurses even tried to extinguish the flames, saying: “Despite the shelling, we managed to get three buckets of water there, but, of course, we couldn’t save our hospital.”

“But, thank God, we managed to save the patients,” Irina recalled, barely able to hold back her tears.

She gave her interview at the ruins of the hospital, which was never rebuilt after the short but deadly conflict that, according to various estimates, claimed between 400 and 1,600 lives, including several Russian peacekeepers. The aggression was only curbed by the intervention of the Russian military, after Moscow swiftly launched a ‘peace enforcing’ operation, within days shunting the Georgian forces deep back into their territory.

While all hell was breaking loose outside, inside their temporary shelter there was also “no food, water or medicine for the patients. They were very hungry,” Irina said. But fear was even greater as “they kept asking me every second: ‘Irina, you aren’t going to leave us, right? Don’t leave us. We will die.’ I told them: ‘I won’t leave you. We’ll be together. We’ll find rescue and we’ll live on.'”

“But they also understood that war is terrible. This is obvious even to the mentally affected people,” the nurse explained.

After some time, some of the patients, who were left without their usual medication started “acting erratically,” Irina said. “At times, we were forced to restrain them with our own hands, using force. There was no other way to calm the mentally affected.”

On August 9, the nurses decided to relocate to a safer and larger shelter, which turned out a very dangerous affair. “There was a gunfight. We were leaning to walls as we were getting out. I told them to follow me and by making small steps we went on. We were constantly on the lookout so that the patients wouldn’t get lost.”

They wanted to get to a nearby home in which, they knew, there was a big cellar. But it was already packed with all the people living in the area. So they had to quickly come up with a new sanctuary. “We took those 19 patients and ran. Walking was no option as shells flew above our heads. There was a constant sound of explosions.”

They were lucky to find a bunker where they’d spend another four days. During this time, Irina repeatedly “went outside and gathered plums in the nearby gardens. And I can’t imagine how she managed to find bread. She brought like 15 or 20 loaves,” another nurse, Svetlana, recalled. “She fed all of us.”

The medical staff and the patients were eventually evacuated from the war zone. The patients of the destroyed hospital are currently undergoing treatment in the Russian city of Vladikavkaz. Irina has, meanwhile, taken a new job and now works with kids in the main children’s hospital in Tskhinval.

M1 Abrams tanks, heavy armor arrive in Georgian port for Agile Spirit drills (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/m1-abrams-tanks-heavy-armor-arrive-in-georgian-port-for-agile-spirit-drills-video/ https://briefnews.eu/m1-abrams-tanks-heavy-armor-arrive-in-georgian-port-for-agile-spirit-drills-video/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 20:22:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/m1-abrams-tanks-heavy-armor-arrive-in-georgian-port-for-agile-spirit-drills-video/

The US military has sent a number of M1 Abrams tanks as well as heavy armored vehicles for a massive multinational exercise, Agile Spirit 2017, which is kicking off in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Some 500 US troops along with M1 Abrams main battle tanks and LAV armored fighting vehicles have arrived in the former Soviet republic of Georgia for the Agile Spirit 2017 exercise.

Georgia’s Defense Ministry has released a video that showed the unloading of the tanks – painted in desert camouflage – at the port of Poti.

US heavy armor will then be transported by train to Vaziani, where the main stage of the war games will begin.

The war games are expected to take place at the Georgian military’s Vaziani training center, involving US soldiers as well as approximately 1,000 troops from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania and Ukraine.

“This is the seventh [edition] of the annually scheduled multilateral exercise designed to enhance US, Georgian and regional partner interoperability and strengthen understanding of each nation’s tactics, techniques and procedures,” the Pentagon said in a press release.

Georgia, an active contributor to NATO deployments, has long planned to join the bloc, while Russia has long criticized the alliance for coming closer to its borders.

In a June interview with film director Oliver Stone, Russian President Vladimir Putin described NATO as an instrument of American foreign policy, and said the alliance’s members inevitably become US “vassals.”

“Once a country becomes a NATO member, it is hard to resist the pressures of the US. And all of a sudden, any weapons system can be placed in this country. An anti-ballistic missile system, new military bases and if need be, new offensive systems,” Putin said, adding that Russia was forced to take countermeasures over the ever-increasing NATO threat and armed military build-up on Russia’s borders.

Bath is a great city for taking a stroll and taking in the sights

See

It is a great city for taking a stroll and taking in the sights.

Sweeping crescents and elegant Georgian streets sit alongside cobbled alleyways and a beautiful riverside, all of which can be covered on an afternoon ramble.

But the history is interwoven with the modern in Bath which definitely has its youthful, vibrant side.

Centuries-old shops stand next to trendy boutiques, old honey-coloured stone houses and some of the latest luxury hotels and restaurants.

First stop, though, must be the Roman Baths (romanbaths.co.uk) where the practice of wallowing in the area’s natural thermal waters began.

Descend below street level and you will see a network of spa pools in a fantastic state of preservation.

However, even in this paragon of the ancient world, technology gives history a helping hand.

Newly opened in the East Baths – which were women-only – are computer-generated displays showing in lifelike detail just how the Romans went about the serious business of bathing.

Do

Take a plunge into the Thermae Bath Spa (01225 331 234/thermaebathspa.com) next door where you can soak in the restorative waters as the Romans did – slave not included.

Gaze across the skyline while being gently pummelled by the bubbles in the magical setting of the rooftop pool.

The spa is supplied by the mineral-packed waters which have bubbled underground for thousands of years.

There is a more modern feel in its brand-new Wellness Suite, with its scented steam rooms, ice chamber and state-of-the-art infrared sauna.

A special Ancient & Modern package includes a ticket to the Roman Baths, a two-hour session at Thermae Bath Spa and lunch or afternoon tea at the nearby Pump Room.

The city’s historic Pulteney Bridge reaches across the River Avon

Stay

No.15 Great Pulteney (01225 807767/no15greatpulteney.co.uk) is another eclectic mix of old and new.

The splendid Regency townhouse is situated on one of Bath’s finest streets.

Inside, it is a treasure trove of original modern art, shabby-chic furniture and contemporary lamps highlighting bare plaster walls.

Elaborate chandeliers adorn many of the rooms with the feature piece a Lost Earring Chandelier made from, you guessed it, single lost earrings – dozens of them.

Everywhere you look there are tables made from glass cases filled with vintage costume jewellery and hand mirrors.

And make sure you check out the reception, hidden behind the façade of a doll’s house.

The quirky theme continues in the bedrooms where you can find a Nespresso coffee machine tucked away in another doll’s house complete with dainty china cups.

Bathrooms are ultra-modern but dressed up with a colourful ceramic basin.

Doubles from £110 (two sharing), B&B.

Eat

The hotel’s restaurant, Cafe 15, is a good place to start – a characterful setting decorated with old apothecary products along the walls.

A breakfast of scrambled egg and smashed avocado is a real tonic, as is the new evening menu, which includes sea bream with leeks and chicken with onion and lemon thyme.

You will find other interesting places to eat in the Little SouthGate area, which is fast becoming a restaurant quarter with the launch of small chains such as Absurd Bird, Comptoir Libanais and Thaikhun.

If you wish to reconnect with the past then stroll a little way off the beaten tourist track where you will find The Star Inn, a peaceful 16th-century haven away from the hordes.

It is a little-changed pub with a warren of oak-panelled rooms and a roaring fire.

There are no gastropub meals here but I can vouch for the cask ales and ham rolls.

Shop

Grab another slice of history at Paxton & Whitfield (paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk), cheesemongers for more than 200 years.

This particular branch is a newcomer – it opened after the Second World War – and offers a feast of the finest locally made cheese. Help yourself to a piece of creamy Westcombe Cheddar at £6 for 250g.

For a more modern consumer experience try the new branch of Graham And Green (grahamandgreen.co.uk) for super-stylish furniture and homewares, including plenty of seductive bohemian-type stuff.

The new Verve interiors shop up the road is in the same vein.

Insider tip

The recently launched Skyline Walk (nationaltrust.org.uk) offers amazing vistas over Bath.

Walk through woodlands, past 18th-century follies and through hidden valleys.

At six miles long it can take three hours, so you can catch the No.13 bus to Alexandra Park instead and a short walk will give you a fine vantage point.
